Chapter Ten
Alicia didn't even know where she was running to. She just had to get away.
Fat, salty tears ran down her face and landed onto the wet road below her. It had started to rain and she had no hood or umbrella with her, but she didn't care. She just allowed her mascara to run and her hair to get knotted with the raindrops that were escaping from the sky. She probably looked a complete mess to anyone who passed her, but again, she didn't care.
She felt as if someone was following her, and it scared her and made her run even faster. She tripped over a pothole in the middle of the road, letting out a pained gasp as she crashed onto her knees.
It hurt and she was sure that she felt blood, but she just pulled herself up and continued to run. For some unknown reason, she found herself outside Connie's house. She stopped running and just stared up at the beautiful, welcoming home. She stayed, rooted to the spot for a good five minutes, before making the decision to knock.
She soon regret the decision though.
Sure, Connie had been discharged and was loads better, but she was supposed to be resting. Did she really want visitors? Before she could change her mind and walk away, Connie answered.
"Alicia." It felt weird to hear Connie use her first name, instead of her professional name. "What are you doing here? You're soaking."
"I'm sorry," she whispered, arms folded across her wet scrubs. "But can I come in?"
"Of course," Connie said. "Come in Alicia, come on."
Alicia stepped inside and wiped her muddy shoes on Connie's mat. She looked around the spotless place, as Connie grabbed a towel from the downstairs bathroom to drape across Alicia's shoulders.
Alicia thanked her and got back to examining Connie's house.
"Can I get you a drink?" She asked.
"Um...Do you have Orange Juice?" Alicia asked, and Connie nodded. "Thank you."
She'd never been in Connie's house before, but it was the nicest that she'd ever been in. She'd often hoped of having somewhere like that some day, somewhere to call her own, somewhere to be proud of.
"Just make yourself comfortable," Connie said, as she went to get Alicia a drink from the kitchen. "Then we can talk."
Alicia suddenly felt sick. What was she meant to say to Connie? Connie could clearly tell that there was something wrong. She did randomly turn up on the doorstep, soaking wet and in tears, whilst she was supposed to be working.
"One Orange Juice coming up," Connie said, setting the glass down onto the coffee table in front of the sofa that Alicia was sat on. "So, are you going to tell me what's wrong?" Connie asked and sat next to her.
Alicia shrugged her shoulders and had a small sip of her drink.
"Well, you must have come here for a reason," Connie said.
"I didn't mean to," Alicia whispered, small tears continuing to roll down her cheeks. "It just happened."
"You're bleeding," Connie said, her eyes suddenly on Alicia's knee. "Let me clean that for you."
"No." Alicia just flinched as Connie tried to get close to her.
"Alicia, do you not realise how many people are worried about you at the moment?" Connie asked. "Not just you, but Lily as well."
"Why?" Alicia asked. "I can't speak for Lily, but I'm fine."
"Are you though?" Connie narrowed her eyebrows at her. "Lily practically had a panic attack in the ED the other day and you've not exactly been yourself either. I've had Charlie and Elle paying regular visits to me, updating me on every single person in that ED, and you and Lily have come up an awful lot."
"We have?" Alicia whispered, curling her fingers around the glass. "I'm fine, Mrs Beauchamp."
Alicia tried to tell her, she really did, but she was scared. Connie had way too much on her plate at the moment, and she didn't want to throw anymore worries onto her. It wouldn't be right.
"Do you expect me to believe that though?" Connie asked, and Alicia turned her head away. "You obviously came here for a reason, but if you don't want to talk to me, then I respect that. I need to phone the ED though and let them know that you're safe. Are you going to be okay by yourself for a bit?"
"Sure," she sobbed out and gave her a nod. "I'll be fine."
Connie gave the ridge of her back a comforting rub, and left the room to go and make the phone-call.
"Lily!" Ethan hurried after his best friend and grabbed her arm, pulling her into the nearest supply closet. Lily let out a shocked squeal, as Ethan shut and locked the door behind them both. "Right! I need answers and we are going to stay in here until I get them."
"I don't know what you're talking about, Ethan," Lily said.
"Really?" Ethan scoffed. "You don't know what I'm talking about?"
Lily didn't say anything, and just hung her head.
"I thought so," Ethan said. "I think you're forgetting that you're my best friend here, Lily."
"Really?" Lily asked. "Since when? You called me a cow at Cal's funeral, you didn't say goodbye to me when I left, and you've hardly breathed a single word to me since I've been back. We used to be best friends Ethan, but you've changed. You're not just different with me, but with everyone, especially Alicia."
"So, you know that this is about Alicia then?" Ethan sighed.
"What?" Lily frowned at him and quickly shook her head. "N...No, I...I didn't say that, I..."
"Have you been drinking?" Ethan asked suddenly, scanning her up and down.
"Look who's talking," Lily scoffed. "The man who got drunk at his brother's funeral."
Ethan didn't say anything, but Lily was sure that she saw a small tear roll down the left hand side of his face.
"Sorry," she whispered and gave him a comforting smile. "I shouldn't have said that. What did you want to talk about?"
"Alicia," he whispered and it was now his time to hang his head. "Do you know what's going on with her? I need to know, Lily. Please. Elle said that she'd ran off and...Truth is, I'm seriously worried about her."
Lily couldn't tell him. She needed to talk to Alicia first and make sure that she was okay. Things had gone too far now, and she needed to try and get her to tell someone. She couldn't tell anyone, but Alicia needed to.
"I'm sorry, Ethan," Lily said. "There are some things that I know, but I can't talk to you about them."
"Why not?" Ethan asked. "Lily, if Alicia is in danger then..."
"I just can't," Lily interrupted him. "Alicia's my friend and I made a promise to her. She needs to tell you herself and I can make sure that she does, but that's all I can do."
"Why was she even drinking?" Iain asked, as he and Robyn sat side by side in the staffroom. "I know that she told me some quite deep stuff, but I never put her down for drinking her problems away."
"Really?" Robyn gulped anxiously, as she picked at her fingernails. "What kind of stuff did she tell you exactly?"
Iain glanced towards the red-head and chewed on his lip. He rubbed his hands together and let out a heavy sigh, as he thought back to what Lily had told him. God, the memory made him feel sick. He hated the thought of someone hurting her.
"I don't know if I should tell you," Iain whispered.
"Why not?" Robyn asked. "I might already know."
"I don't know if you do know," Iain said. "I'm pretty certain that I'm the only one Lily has told."
"But what if you do know the same thing that I know?" Robyn asked. "Then we can help each other and decide what direction to go in."
"But what if you don't know the same thing that I know?" Iain asked. "I would have basically broken Lily's trust."
"Well, Lily will probably hate me but how about I tell you what I know?" Robyn asked and moved closer to Iain's side. "Not because I'm a bitch or a gossiper or anything, although people do tend to label me as the ED gossiper, but because you and Lily are a couple and I feel that you should know now before things get worse or out of control."
Iain felt extremely confused now. Did Robyn seriously know that Lily had been raped as a teenager?
"Lily was in the bathroom the other day and she shouted at me to get out," Robyn said, sounding extremely nervous. "I was concerned and when she left, I...I found a pregnancy test in the bin."
"What?" Iain's eyes widened.
That certainly wasn't what he'd been expecting Robyn to say.
"It was negative," Robyn added. "So you don't need to worry, but I thought that you had a right to know. I think Lily was just in shock and probably a bit upset that it was negative, so maybe that was what brought the drink on."
Iain nodded in slow-motion, unsure of what to say. The words were stuck. His palms became sweaty and small tears formed in his eyes. He couldn't believe that Lily had had the nerve to hide something like that from him. Even if the test had been negative, he still had a right to know that she'd had a scare. Should he ask her about it? Surely Robyn wasn't expecting him to stay silent about the matter.
He didn't know what to do.
"I'm sorry," Robyn said.
"It's fine, Robyn," he choked out a small sob. "It isn't your fault, is it? Um...I...I need to go, alright?"
"Where are you going?" Robyn asked, as Iain stood up from the sofa.
He kept his head down, his dark hair hanging in front of his brown eyes. He didn't answer her for a good couple of minutes.
"I don't know." He took a couple of steps forwards and stopped at the door. "I really don't know. I need some air and then I...I guess I need to have a word with Lily. If you see her, could you let her know that I'm looking for her?"
"Yeah," Robyn whispered and gave him a comforting smile. "Of course I will. Iain?"
"What?" He sniffed, his hand on the doorframe, as he lifted his head to make eye contact with Robyn.
"I really am sorry," she said.
"Yeah," he sobbed and wiped away his tears as he left. "Me too."
So things have reached a bit of a low for everyone unfortunately. This chapter was a bit of a filler, just showing various conversations between the different characters, but I hope you still enjoyed it.
Thank you for all of your lovely feedback so far. Let me know what you think x
