Chapter 3
A/N: Just to warn y'all, I only read Return to the Isle of the Lost once and don't remember everything exactly. Sorry if I get out of character with canon characters! Onto the story!
Not far past the roar of the arcade, a little goblin café sat in a rundown brick wall. The same one that Mal frequented before leaving for Auradon. In the window, three teens sat around a table. Moldy pudding being between them. Only two were talking, Mal and an old ally that rubbed Evie off the wrong way. Mad Maddy. Granddaughter of Madam Mim of Camelot. The younger daughter of Hades and Maleficent walked on into the shop, dropping her dark glasses over her eyes. "Evie, can we talk?" she asks as she stands behind her fellow blue-haired VK. Arms crossed as Evie quickly stands up.
"I'll be right back… as if you'll notice that I'm gone," Evie says with a frown before following Hadley on out. Back on into the brightness of the fair. With a nod to Celia, Hadley leads the princess past a set of red curtains into the employee only area. "You're allowed back here?" Evie asks as they sit down on a ratty magenta couch.
"Celia and I go way back. We were partners," Hadley says as she proper her feet up on a coffee table after moving a pack of tarot cards out of the way. "Very few people know about me before Elyse. Celia and Facilier used to cover for me," she adds as she takes off her sunglasses. "Anyways… Mad Maddy is up to something. Mal is in trouble and we both know that she won't admit it."
"How well do you know Mad Maddy?" Evie asks as she turns to face the younger VK. She also thought Mal's old friend was up to something, but she didn't know what she was up to.
"I know her by reputation. Had a short fling with one of her cousins. Mal didn't like being mistaken for Maddy's twin, so she used a potion to change Maddy's hair color. The witch wanted revenge ever since," Hadley explains as she twirls her aviators in her hand. She never even met the witch until she went and got Evie. "We need to get Mal out. The Anti-Hero Club meets in an hour in your basement. Hadie is a member."
Evie nods before getting up. "Hopefully your brother isn't in over his head. He's just a kid," she says as she offers her hand to Hadley to pull her up. As Hadley gets to her feet, the princess pulls her out of the curtained area and back to the Slop Shop. "Mal! We need to meet up with the boys, remember?"
Mal looks up as she hears her best friend. At the reminder of needing to meet the boys, she stands up. "Right! Let's get going," the half-fey states before leading the way out and to Jafar's shop. "Any leads?"
"Time and location. I'll tell you once we get Carlos," Hadley says before poking her head into the shop of stolen goods. Seeing Jay behind the register selling items. "Oi! Snake butt! Time to bounce!"
Jay laughs at the nickname the youngest member of the gang gave him. "I'm coming, tiny flame," he jokes as he runs on over to the girls and pulls Hadley into a headlock. Only releasing her after giving a noogie. Laughing as the younger teen squirms.
"As amusing as that is, we need to get going. Carlos is still waiting," Mal reminds them as Jay drops Hadley. The two just give Mal an innocent little grin as the follow their leader to the other side of the Isle.
In the basement of the Evil Queen's castle, they were plunged into the dark. Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos had to go by the lights of their phones while Hadley's eyes jut glowed green, allowing her to see. They walk on into a room, which suddenly lit up exposing the small group of VKs and Yen Sid. Cake on a table as the celebrate the homecoming of the first of hopefully many groups to cross the water. "Welcome to the Anti-Hero Club! The Anti is so our parents don't find out," Hadie grins as he runs over and tackle hugs Hadley. Only coming up to her shoulder.
"You guys are trying to be good?" Evie asks as she smiles at Hadley and Hadie excitedly chatting. "That's great!"
"So do you know what happened to our parents?" Mal asks as she glances over at her half-brother and Hadley. Not having ever met her little brother. She only knew of Hadley thanks to Maleficent ranting about how weak the younger girl is.
"Yes, we will discuss that after cake," Yen Sid says as his students cut up and serve the cake. Waiting for the Core Four and Hadley to get their slices.
As they were all getting their cake, Mal noticed Mad Maddy sneaking around at the entrance. The leader goes off after the witch, not noticing Evie watching her. The princess goes and shakes the shoulders of the younger children of Hades. "Hadley, you were right. The two of you need to come with me. Mal will likely need backup," she whispers into their ears once she has the attention of the blue haired siblings.
The two kids of Hades quickly look at each other before following Evie out of the basement. "If things go south, I'll grab Jay and Carlos. I would say Uma… but no matter how tight she and Hadley were, Uma and Mal hate each other," Hadie says as the trio sneak behind Mal and Maddy. Evie and Hadley ready to fight at a moment's notice.
They follow the duo towards the docks. The Gaston twins and Ginny Gothel sneaking up on the unsuspecting Mal. "Hadie, go get Jay and Carlos," Hadley whispers to her brother. Hadie instantly nods before running back to the rest of the club.
Hadie ran back as fast as he could. Making it inside right as Yen Sid finished explaining the trials and the emblems of power. "Mad Maddy got a team together to hurt Mal! Hadley and Evie are already there!" he calls out as soon as he enters. Jay and Carlos instantly follow the 13-year-old to the docks just to see Mal get tossed into the water while Hadley pulled Ginny into a headlock. Evie was trying to get to Maddy as the boys run over.
"Carlos! Get Mal! I'll deal with the twins!" Jay calls out as he barrels over to Gaston Jr and Gaston the Third. Hadie following behind.
Carlos jumped into the river after Mal. Slowly dog paddling to the drowning leader. After Ginny took off, Hadley ran to the side of the bridge and calls out "Hey scale faces! Tick tock tick tock!" to the descendants of Tick Tock Croc. Catching their attention. The crocs slowly swim over to the daughter of Hades, giving Carlos enough time to get Mal to shore for Evie to pull her up. "Got her?"
"Yeah!" Evie calls back to Hadley. "Get back over here!" she adds as one of the crocs tries to take a bite out of Hadley.
The teen quickly runs back to the group and sit down next to Mal. "You okay?" she asks her older sister. Not bothering to hide her worry.
"I'm fine. How did you find me?" Mal asks as she sits up. Taking Hadie's hoodie when it's offered to her. Her purple hair was sticking to her face. Her wet clothes clinging to her petite frame.
"The fire squad and I followed you," Evie explains, using the nickname for when Hadley and Hadie are together. "We thought you may be getting in over your head."
"Thanks, now lets get back to Yen Sid so we can find our parents," Mal says as she takes Hadley's hand and pulls herself to her feet. She pulls on the faded black hoodie and rubs her arms in an attempt to warm up.
"Need a ride back? I could give you a piggy back ride," Hadley offers after taking off the white hoodie she had on under her blue leather jacket and throws it at the soaked Carlos. "Try not to rip it. Elyse doesn't know that I took it," she tells the son of Cruella DeVil as he puts the hoodie on under his jacket.
"You got it!" Carlos says as they walk back to the castle. Mal leading the way.
When they all returned, only Yen Sid and Diego were there. "So you are all here now! Harry and Jasper found the tunnel. I will explain everything on the way," Yen Sid says before Diego leads them out to the beach where Harry and Jasper waited. "Your parents have gone after their symbols of power. You will each face trials to retrieve them."
"What kind of trials?" Carlos asks as Hadley puts her foot in the hole, her foot sinking into the sad suddenly and knocking her off balance.
"One designed to be impossible for your parents to complete," Yen Sid explains before motioning to the hole. "There is the path. We wish you the best of luck!"
The 5 VKs look at each other before walking into the dark tunnel. Prepped for this adventure.
