Time slows down when your in panic, 15 minutes can feel like hours have passed. Thats how they felt being wheeled down into the hospital. Everything felt like a blur rushing over. Tessa even imagine she had saw Caitlin.
Now here she was on this cold bed, undressed from the bottom down, having a new doctor ask for permission to probe her with a machine she had never seen before. She was shaking, Joey had gripped both hands trying to keep her study but it was really to keep him calm. Tears were forming in her eyes. She plaid the worst-case scenario in her head.
Joey watched the screen trying to keep his mind off everything going on. He didn't want to show his worry to Tessa, he can see the tears in her eyes and didn't want them to flow down her face.
The video lit up with their growing baby. It was almost non-existent but he heard it.
"Tessa did you hear that?"
The another one, and another. The tears turned joyous and started to run down her face. Another, Joey loosened his tight grip on her hands. And another, both let out sighs of relief.
"Your kid might end up being a great athlete with that heart beat." Dr. Schroeder, their new doctor reassured them.
"What happened?"
"Nothing, Baby Campanelli just has a low heart rate. Nothing to worry about now. Just check in with me every 2 weeks for an ultrasound. Hopefully if the heart rate improves I can send you back to Dr. Shelia."
"And if it doesn't?" Tessa asked through her tears. She needed to know.
"We might have to induce you early and perform a cesarean delivery where we deliver the baby through incisions in the abdomen and uterus"
She didn't like the sound of that. She never really thought of birth. Joey felt her tighten underneath his grip, he rubbed his thumbs in little circles trying to calm her.
"But everything is good?" He asked watching their baby on the black and white screen.
"Yes, I'll see you guys in 2 weeks."
"You ok?" Joey asked seconds after the doctor left the room.
"Yes, just worried."
"Don't be, its not good for the baby."
"Don't be?" She yelled at him. "Its not you their going to cut up, it's not you that their probing the inside of with that machine, don't tell me what to feel."
"Tessa, I didn't mean it like that." He tried to come in to comfort her but she needed space.
"Leave, I need to get dressed."
After their argument in the office they both silently walked out of the obstetric unit. Joey was the one who broke the silence.
"Do you mind if I go see Lucy before I take you home?"
"Yeah, that's fine I'll just wait down on the cafeteria again. Let me know how she's doing."
"Will do!"
Tessa hated being alone with her thoughts. She wished she had someone to talk to about her new worries. She knew that with Joey's reaction that he wasn't going to be any help. She sighed and decided to work on homework while Joey went to see Lucy.
Tesss stood up to grab her backpack from the chair across from her And that's when she saw her. Tessa thought she had hallucinated seeing Caitlin, but there she was about to pay for her meal. Tessa froze, she wasn't prepared for this; Caitlin was supposed to be at Carleton.
And then it happened, she turned and locked eyes with her. Both their mouths feel opened, Tessa wished a black hole would swallow her up right now.
"Tessa Campanelli?" Caitlin's voice seemed agitated.
Tessa tried to get the words out but she couldn't. She just starred at the girl trying to calm her thoughts. There was so much to say if only she can get the words out.
"This is perfect," she scoffed, "I was hoping the first person to see back in town was Lucy but I did want to see you. We have unfinished business." She said stepping towards Tessa.
Staying frozen is all Tessa could do. It was like her mind shut down watching her former class mate step closer to her. She continued to try to will herself to talk but nothing came out.
"You were my friend," the anger seeped out of Caitlin's voice stepped even closer has she spoke. "Spike even warned you but you still took your chance. How do you feel now Tessa? Joey didnt want you, Todd didn't want you, Yick didn't want you, no one wants you." They were inches apart now.
Tessa's lip began to tremble, did no one want her?
"Oh and congratulations on being pregnant. I'm sure the school slut and the towns idiot's child has such a bright future ahead. " Caitlin finished thinking she had the last laugh.
"He's not," Tessa said, "Joey might not ne the brightest but he has a lot of heart, he'll figure something out. Has for my child," she said closing the gap between the two, "don't ever let another bad thought escape your mouth or else."
"Or else what?"
"Caitlin, Tessa," Joey said stepping in between the two. "enough."
