Kuroko's world was filled with color. The flowers reached nearly 10 feet tall, bursting with every shade when the season changed from winter to spring. The ground was soft like a pile of blankets fresh out of the dryer. Fish swam in the sky, birds flew in the sea. Kuroko's blue eyes glowed with the sun, his blue hair tangled with smaller flower petals. He loved his world. It was beautiful, everything about it was wonderful, yet all he wanted was to go to his world. The world of his boyfriend, the world of his fire angel, the world of Akashi Seijuro.
Akashi's world was more somber. Grey tones filled the sky, black and white covered the ground. The clouds brushed through the streets, always producing a thick fog. The buildings were tall, looming over the people. And amidst his monotone world, Akashi stood in red. His hair bright against his surroundings, his pale skin glowing in the fog, his only desire was to see his beautiful, colorful, boyfriend.
Unfortunately, their worlds only collided once every couple of years, briefly meeting for a couple of minutes before parting. Akashi and Kuroko had met as children. The blue haired boy was playing in a field when he saw a dark cloud approach at an alarming speed. Kuroko stared in awe when he saw a world of grey and a red haired boy standing in front of him. They stared at each other, unsure of what to do. And then they both reached out towards each other.
Their fingertips brushed together hesitantly.
"Your name?" Kuroko had asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.
"Akashi Seijuro." The redhead responded, he had never seen so many colors before. He laced their fingers together, not wanting to let go.
"Kuroko Tetsuya."
Akashi smiled and blurted out, "You're beautiful."
Kuroko laughed and he handed the redhead a small flower that was tangled in his blue hair, "For you!"
Akashi grabbed the flower and admired it. It was blue; a color which he never got to see in his world.
Their worlds drifted apart. Akashi stood alone in his world, the blue flower in his hand. He rushed home to preserve it.
The next time they met was three years later. Kuroko waited in the same field in hopes to see the red haired boy, Akashi waited in the same spot as well. When their worlds collided, they shyly greeted each other. This time they had a little more than 10 minutes together before their worlds drifted apart. They promised to see each other again.
The third time they met, they were ten years old. Kuroko worked hard to make a present for his crush. He weaved gold and sapphire colored threads together to make a sparkling bracelet. He ran to the usual spot in the field and patiently waited for their worlds to collide.
"Sei-kun!" Kuroko yelled as the other came into view from the dark grey clouds.
"Tetsuya, how are you?"
The blue haired boy lifted the bracelet for the other to see, "I made this for you! So you won't forget me!"
Akashi laughed, "As if I could ever forget you."
Kuroko fastened the bracelet on the other's wrist and admired it. Akashi watched in adoration and then brought out his present for the blue haired boy.
"Um…" Akashi mumbled, "it's not colorful or pretty but I made you this necklace."
It was a simple metal chain with a smooth silver stone pendant. The stone sparkled despite its grey coloring. Kuroko gasped, "It's beautiful, Sei-kun. What is it?"
"It's a grey star sapphire. I'm sorry there's nothing colorful in my world."
"It's perfect. Can you put it on for me?" Kuroko turned around so the other could reach over to put the necklace around his neck.
Akashi smiled, "Of course."
The necklace felt warm against Kuroko's chest, the stone heavy and comforting around his neck. The blue haired boy smiled and leaned up to kiss Akashi on the cheek.
Their worlds drifted apart and they knew that they would see each other again.
Akashi was popular at his school. He was handsome, smart, athletic, polite, but everyone knew that the redhead was completely smitten with another person. Rumors spread quickly through his school, rumors that Akashi had a forbidden love with someone from another world, rumors that Akashi was a taken man.
The next time they met, they were 15. Their worlds hadn't collided for 5 years, but they both felt it when their worlds got closer. Kuroko waited at the usual spot. He was older now and during their five years apart, he had grown to accept that the feelings he had for Akashi were love. He wanted to see Akashi as soon as possible to confess, he wanted to see his friend.
Their worlds collided slowly, dark clouds looming in the field of Kuroko's colorful world. When Akashi's red hair came into view, the blue haired boy could barely contain his excitement. He fidgeted as he waited for their worlds to fully collide. Akashi smiled at him and waved, the gold and blue bracelet sparkling on his wrist.
Kuroko ran over and held Akashi's hands in his, "Sei-kun, I have something to tell you."
Akashi looked down at his friend, Kuroko was still shorter but his features had sharpened slightly. He lost a bit of baby fat, he gained some muscle, yet overall he still looked soft. Especially with all the flowers adorned in his hair. The redhead smiled when he saw the grey necklace hanging around his neck.
"What is it, Tetsuya?"
"I have someone I like but it's a little difficult because we live in different worlds." Kuroko blushed a little, "I'm not sure if he wants to stay by my side the same way I want to stay by his side. Sei-kun, I really like you."
Akashi felt as if his world was filled with color. Every time he was with Kuroko, he saw new colors. He lightly cupped Kuroko's face and brushed their lips together.
"Tetsuya, I love you. More than anything, I love you."
They spent their time simply soaking in each other's existence. They were so far yet they knew they belonged together. They knew it would be difficult to maintain a relationship due to their different worlds but this was all they wanted. Before their worlds drifted apart, they shared a soft kiss and promised to meet again.
Kuroko was now 17, he hadn't seen his boyfriend in two years but he never stopped thinking about him. He gently played with the grey star sapphire and stared out the window at school. The stone was warm, just like Akashi. There was a certain heat from the stone which made Kuroko's heart melt. He missed him, he missed him so much.
His classmate, Midorima, was talking to him but Kuroko didn't hear a single word. The blue haired boy felt a sudden gust of wind enter the classroom and he stood up abruptly.
It's too early...but this feeling… Kuroko thought to himself, his grip over his necklace tightened. He stared at the sky and saw a familiar grey cloud.
"I've got to go, Midorima-kun. Sorry!"
Kuroko ran out of his school, he ran as fast as he could. Their worlds were colliding earlier than expected and he didn't want to miss a single second. The blue haired boy was panting but he willed his legs to keep going.
I want to see him, I want to see him, I want to see him.
He saw the grey cloud land, but he was still far away. Kuroko felt tears stream down his face, his lungs begging for air, he continued to run.
By the time he got to the field, their worlds were already slowly drifting apart. Kuroko saw Akashi standing in the field, waiting for him as always. The redhead had his arms open to his boyfriend. Kuroko jumped into his embrace, taking in his scent, his warmth, everything.
"Seijuro, you're back. I'm sorry I'm late." He whispered into Akashi's neck.
Akashi's fingers trailed through Kuroko's beautiful hair, "Hello love. Our worlds were a bit early this time."
As Akashi's world drifted away, Kuroko felt his lover's body fade away. He pressed their lips together in a passionate kiss. He just wanted more time. He felt Akashi wipe away his tears and then he was gone.
When Kuroko turned 20, he waited in the field for Akashi's world. He had spent the past couple of years predicting the next time their worlds would collide and he was sure that it would be very soon. This time he would be ready for it. This time he would spend every second he could with his boyfriend.
Their worlds collided just as Kuroko predicted and Akashi was waiting on time as always. They fell into each other's embrace the moment their worlds came together. Akashi felt illuminated by Kuroko's smile, there was nothing more beautiful to him than his colorful angel and Kuroko wanted nothing more than to feel more warmth from Akashi.
Akashi wrapped his arms tight around the other's waist and laughed as Kuroko left small kisses all over his face.
"Hey, hey, calm down, Tetsuya. Let me at least look at you." Akashi said while pulling away to get a good look at his boyfriend. He was as gorgeous as ever.
They sat together in the field, cherishing every second they had together, and simply talked about what they had been doing for the past couple of years. None of them spoke of the loneliness they felt when their worlds were apart. None of them spoke of the pain they felt while waiting for their worlds to collide again. They simply enjoyed their moments together.
"Our worlds are drifting again, Sei-kun. At least we nearly got an hour together this time. I'll see you soon?"
Akashi sighed, "I'll see you soon, Tetsuya. I love you so much."
Kuroko stood on his toes and kissed his forehead, "I love you more."
They were 24 when their worlds collided again. There was little conversation shared between them as they tangled themselves in a passionate embrace in the field. Clothes scattered, flower petals floating between them, Kuroko pulled Akashi closer wanting more. Their worlds drifted apart an hour later and Kuroko lay alone in the field covered in flower petals and Akashi's warmth.
Akashi and Kuroko regained their memories when they met again at the age of 26. They were holding hands and staring at the sky when their memories came back. They looked at each other and giggled like children. They promised to get a tally mark on their back to mark their 60th lifetime together.
They continued to meet briefly every couple of years. Sometimes their worlds collided for a few minutes, sometimes a few hours, but never more than a day. They were unable to cross over into each other's worlds fully, although they could visit, they couldn't stay there. Kuroko dreamed of jumping into Akashi's monotone world and staying with him forever, but he couldn't. His world would always take him back when they drifted apart.
It bothered them a lot at first, but they grew to accept the brief moments of love that they had together. For years it was perfect, but Kuroko stopped coming one day.
Akashi found out later from Midorima that Kuroko had passed away in an accident. The color that he saw disappeared. The redhead fell to his knees, tears blinding him. He sat alone in the field as their worlds drifted apart.
Akashi didn't return after that. He sat at home, his house filled with the dried and pressed flowers which Kuroko had given him every time they met. The gold and blue bracelet still glowed on his wrist, but Akashi felt nothing. He didn't want to feel anything.
His world was consumed by grey, and Akashi passed away a couple of years later.
