Chapter 1
When I open my eyes, its not the darkness of the bureau that surrounds me but a bright, pulsing light.
I stand up with a weightlessness ease and i look at my appearance in an ornate silver mirror. A pale, blonde girl looks back at me, dressed in the same attire from the final battle but... clean?
"Where the hell am I?" I ask to the empty space. As If by magic a golden gate rises from the ground beneath me and with a fuzzy feeling in my head, I walk slowly towards it.
I pass through the gates and see a familiar face. Uriah. I immediately run and jump into his arms and he catches me, spinning around and hugging me close.
"Oh thank god! Someone I know. I feel like I've been here forever. What is this place? Is it some other bureau experiment? Where are the people? Did you get a golden gate too?" He spits out hurriedly, as if one of us would disappear.
"Breathe Uri. The only question I can answer is the golden gate one. It just appeared? Strange."
We sit on the white floor which is surprisingly warm. Then familiar figures rise in front of us. Marlene, Will and my parents.
We rush forward arms open, only to run right through them.
"I know you have a lot of questions but just listen ok?" My mother says calmly and I feel tears start to pick behind my eyes. We lean into each other for support and watch as the scene unfolds.
"This is heaven. Well, it's not exactly - more like the waiting room." My father says.
"There's the waiting room, where they decide where you go. Heaven and the afterlife. Heaven is like a second earth but without war but the afterlife is a black abyss. You can get banished there or just go to escape from the light." Marlene explains and we nod.
"This isn't your time. You're going back. Four needs you. Zeke needs you. They all need you. You're not ready." Will says, wistfully.
"Will. I'm so sorry about..." I trail off, unsure of how to say it. 'I'm sorry I killed you' doesn't seem right.
"Its OK Tris. I never blamed you for a second. I would've done it if it was the other way round. It was instinct. No need to apologise." Typical Will. My heart pangs with sadness and Marlene walks up to Uriah.
"Oh Uri. I'm sorry. I don't want to hurt you. I watch over you and keep you safe you know. I love you" She whispers.
"Mar." he breathes. "I miss you so much. Its like a piece of me is gone. I love you so much."
I turn away as this seems private.
My parents stand hand in hand and smile at me.
"I'm so proud of you baby girl." He says and I feel a tear slip down my cheek.
"I'm sorry there isn't more time but you need to go back. Your work isn't done." She says and the tears fall harder.
We regroup and i grab Uriahs hand and he squeezes it back.
"Take care of him for me Tris. Uriah, don't be afraid to love again ok. Say hi to everyone for me." Marlene says, eyes shining with unshed tears.
Will sniffs, eyes red. "Take care of Chris, make sure she's eating and happy. Tris, take her shopping and Uriah, play a prank. Also give her this." Suddenly a piece of paper materialises. I am completely lost with the laws of this world.
"We are so proud of you. Remember to smile and say hi to Caleb. To leave just close your eyes and say 'home' " They say nodding.
I look and him and he smiles sadly. "On three?"
"On three."
We close our eyes and the light fades into the darkness.
