Chapter Four
There was a moment of weightlessness before I crashed down onto the figure and tackled them to the ground.
I feel a pair of hands shoving me off them.
"What the hell!" They shout and I hold their arms behind their back.
"Lynn." I whisper softly. Its only now, that she stops moving. She turns and looks at me before scrambling away from me.
"Nah. You win David. Sick monster. Nice try. I know she's not real." She turns around to the rest of the gang. "Aha nice touch. Uriah too? Well done. Now let me finish this in peace"
"Lynn, chill your beans. Its really them. We did the same thing. Relax." Shauna says.
She laughs harshly and I start walking away.
"Wait! 'Tris'." She says using air quotes. "If its really you..." She pauses in thought. "What's our paintball help call?"
I slowly swipe the pad of my thumb against my palm.
I don't have any time to brace myself before she's in my arms and I feel tears trickling onto my shoulder. I gently lead her away from the group, knowing that she wouldn't want anyone to see her crying. I'm struggling on how to comfort her because even though we trust each other, she's never cried before - that's my job. In the end, the best way to help is just to sit beside her.
"I was going to jump you know? I would have used the chasm but it's back home and this is the closest thing to it. I was losing everything. There was Will and then Marlene and then Uriah and then you and my mum and now Gemma's gone and Shaunas in a wheelchair and Zeke was mourning Uri and Four was mourning you and i just..." She trails off and I sit in a stunned silence.
Now I truly realise how much this all affected her. This is the first time she's shown emotion and I get a glimpse of a new, softer side of her. Losing all her friends and family and then your girlfriend (Gemma) on top. That's a lot of pain.
"I knew something was up when you weren't there. This is never the answer Lynn. We are all here for you ok. Promise me, next time, you'll talk to me or someone." I say.
"I promise. I really will." She says, wiping her eyes. I get up to leave and she stops me.
"Do I look like i've been crying?" She asks and I shake my head.
"You look absolutely terrifying." I comment and she chuckles.
"Good." We walk back up the dusty path and out into the clearing.
