Place: Prison

Situation: Kate is discharged from the penitentiary

Room: The Lobby

Receptionist ( watching over Kate's stuff): Who are you waiting for?

Jack: I am waiting for Kate. She has spent five years behind bars. She is getting discharged from the penitentiary today.

Receptionist: The warden gave me the job of watching over her stuff

Jack: I hope you didn't steal anything

Receptionist: I am not that type of person

Jack: Sure

Receptionist (frightened): God have mercy on your soul

Jack: I thank you for your concern

(Kate enters the lobby escorted by two guards. Crying, Sarah runs into Kyle's arms)

Kate (crying): Jack!

One guard (to Jack): You better be careful around this one. She is a firecracker.

Jack(laughing): I know

The second guard:Kate threaten my life once

Kate(in denial): Thats untrue

Jack(grabbing hold of Kate's stuff): Come on, love, lets go home. We have a lot of catching up to do. Do you know what I mean?

Kate(follows Kyle out of the door): Definitely

Place: The highway-Jack's truck

Kate (looking out of the window): The world appears different this time around. Its more colorful and peaceful.

Jack: How so?

Kate(puts her feet on top of the dashboard): I was depressed five years ago. The world appeared dark back then. I never want to revisit that state of mind.

Jack: I am so glad you are out of prison

Kate: I hope the twins will remember me

Jack: Sadly, you missed the first part of their lives. They probably won't remember you. Tomorrow marks a very special important milestone, its their first day of Kindergarten.

Kate: Thats ok, we will take little baby steps

Scene 2: The Shepherd house

Jack (escorting Kate through the front door): Please don't be afraid, I will protect you

Kate (wearing a blindfold, she walks down the hallway): I can't see anything

(All of a sudden Jack turns on the light switches and the twins out surprise)

Kate(shocked and confused): What the hell?

Jack: Kate, we are at your homecoming party

Kate (yelling at Jack): I thought that I told you I didn't like surprises

Jack (laughing): I am sorry

Daniel and Mary (shy, they clings onto Jack): Hello, Kate

Kate (taken aback): Kate?!

Jack: Please excuse their behavior. They are shy around strangers.

Kate (choked up): I am not a stranger.

Jack: They will learn to love you with time

(The Shepherd family gathers around the table to eat their dinner and the rest is history)

Time of Day-Nighttime-after dinner

Room: The Twins' bedroom

Action: The Twins preparing for bed

Kate (tucking the twins into bed): Do you want me to read you a bedtime story?

The Twins: No thanks, Kate. Daddy has already promised to read us a bedtime story.

Kate (checking the twins' book bags): Do you have everything that you need for school?

The twins: Yes. Daddy took us school shopping a long time ago.

Kate (fighting back tears): I guess there's nothing that I can do for you then

The Twins: You tucked us into bed, thats quite an accomplishment

Kate: But still I can do more things for you

Jack (enters the room with a book): Kate, it is time for their bedtime story

(Kate kisses her kids goodnight then she exits the bedroom. Feeling unwanted, Sarah cries herself to sleep. Jack captures her heart underneath the bedsheets)


Scene: The Next Morning

(Before the school bus comes, Kate uses a hot iron to curl Mary's hair. Mary gave permission Kate to do it. Delighted, Mary loves her new hairstyle. She embraces Kate as a way to express her gratitude. Daniel gives a long tight big bear hug. Emotional, Kate then sees her kids off the school. Curls bounce about Mary shoulders as she and Daniel step onto the school bus. Jack uses a camera to capture the heartfelt moment)
