Jackie came home to find Rose sobbing in her living room. "Sweetheart? What's happened? I thought you'd sorted things out when you took off?" She rushed to her daughter's side.
Rose took a few breaths. "We did. And then it all went wrong. It's not his fault, it's mine."
"WHAT happened though? What went wrong?"
"We might lose him, mum. What if he doesn't make it back?"
"Rose, sweetheart. You're not making sense. Let me call Mickey and Pete. We can sort this together."
"No mum, you don't understand."
"Well that's because you won't tell me anything."
"There's this bloke. He's called the Vale-something. He's like an alternate version of the Doctor. He's coming for him."
"Why? What did he do this time?"
"No, he's coming for him so he can survive. He has to kill the Doctor to become whole or something. I'm not explaining this very well." She rested her head in her hands and she tried to make her brain work properly, in the here and now rather than running away with her.
"Well, where's Jack?"
"He's stayed with the Doctor, trying to keep him safe. "
"Well that's good isn't it?"
Rose's phone rang. "Mickey, now's not a good time."
"Yeah. You're telling me. What's he doing there?" Mickey asked.
"Who? Where?"
"Who? The Doctor?! At Downing Street! Everything was quiet, he turns up and it's like a horror movie."
"How do you know he's there?"
"We were on a conference call and he saunters in like he owns the place. Holds out his hands, they all go stiff then collapse. He just stands there grinning. I thought you'd fixed him! Rose, we think they're all dead!"
Rose dropped the phone as her head swam and everything went black.

Frantic whispers pulled Rose from the darkness. Opening her eyes she saw Mickey and Pete had joined her mum.
"What's happening?" Pete demanded.
"Give her a chance!" Jackie admonished, slapping his arm as she handed her daughter a cup of tea.
"I need to talk to Susan. She can explain it better. You might need Jack's people on this call too. You lot might be all we've got.." She grabbed her mobile and prayed for an answer whilst Mickey got Gwen and the rest of Jack's team on a video call. .
"Rose? What's happened? What's wrong?"
"I need you to explain the Vale-thingy to Torchwood," she said, putting her on speaker.
"He's gone hasn't he?"
"Yeah. As soon as we left you. Said he had to do it now or he never would. Only, I don't think he's thought it through. It's already…well…"
"Oh no. How many?"
"How many what?" Pete asked.
"How many dead?" Susan replied matter-of-factly.
"We don't know yet. He's in Downing Street and as far as we know, he hasn't moved."
"Well that's something I suppose. I'm so sorry." Susan took a deep breath. "You've got to remember that the Doctor you're seeing doesn't work the same way as the one you're used to. This one has been forged from almost a millennia of fighting, pain and suffering, without the influence of kindness or love.
A Time Lord's mind is so vast it's separated into sections. Like a filing system. That way they could shut out the things they needed to to get the job done. They were a wonderful race, once upon a time. They took care of the universe and everyone in it. But it became corrupted, and kindness and compassion were trained out of them. Emotional detachment became to order of the day. Some took to it just fine, the already selfish ones. But ones like Grandfather? He already had so much compassion in his soul that burying it was difficult. Eventually he couldn't and he ran, I stowed away with him. He was never forgiven by the High Council. He was a favourite because of how powerful he was but he wouldn't, or rather couldn't submit to their rules. Over the centuries they tried to lure him back but they had become… degenerate he said. They didn't want the rest of Gallifrey knowing but he did, and that meant he was a threat they had to eliminate. That's where it gets messy. Time Lords can literally control time and when there is enough of them they can bend it to their will. You might already know that they could gift and take away regenerations at will. Well of course that wouldn't stop Grandfather doing the right thing. So they had to get creative. They used what they saw as his weakness against him, playing the long game. They created a being that fed solely on his regret, fear and despair, on the darkest recesses of his mind. The idea was to have the Doctor executed before anybody found out about their murderous activities, and gift his remaining regenerations to this being, making him concrete. Luckily for Grandfather, things didn't work out the way they planned. Unluckily that left the Valeyard unsatisfied and incomplete."
"So it's this Valeyard guy that's coming after him?" Mickey asked.
"Yes. He seems to have been roused into action by Rassilon's appearance and gained strength though the ill advised emotional detachment my fool of a grandfather engaged in."
"But what's that got to do with him invading Downing Street?" Pete piped up. "What's he playing at? Those guys look dead!"
"They may well be," Susan sighed. "To stop the Valeyard gaining more strength and to be able to defeat him, Grandfather has had to embrace the darkest side of himself. The Doctor you know isn't the one in control now. You have to realise there are three versions of him now; our Doctor and the dark version who are both inhabiting the same body and the Valeyard. Our only hope is our Doctor can contain his darkness enough to destroy the Valeyard and restore that darkness back to the recesses of his mind."
"Well he's done a grand job so far," Pete scoffed.
"Wait but, what happens if he doesn't destroy this Valeyard?" Mickey asked.
"Then we lose him for good," Rose answered.
"Then the Doctor and the Valeyard will become one and the same. Only stronger than ever. The Doctor may be the most feared being in the Universe but imagine him without any compassion or love in his heart. Just rage and resentment, with only death and destruction giving him any kind of joy."
"Well that's a cheery thought," Owen sighed. "Hi, Torchwood Wales here. Listen, how do you know all this?"
"I'm his granddaughter, when he found me he shared what had happened on Gallifrey after I left him. Rose,I know it's hard but you'll have to stay away from him. If he realises how much you mean to.. well him…. There's no telling how he'll react. He might resent you and want to hurt you, trying to weaken our Doctor. You have to think of them as two separate entities sharing a body."
"Yeah, ok," Rose agreed quietly.
"Listen. Would it help if I came to you? Or you came here?"
"No, you need to keep David safe. The Doctor would never forgive himself if anything happened to you."
"Same goes for you," Susan reminded her.
"I know but I've got two Torchwoods and a Jack on the inside."
"Be safe. Call me anytime if I can help."
"Thanks Susan."
The room fell silent for a few minutes.
"Mickey? Did you leave your conference call feed going?" Tosh asked. "I'm just thinking if you have and he hasn't turned it off the we could hack in and keep tabs on him."
"The conference call was only sound. I might be able to hack back into the cctv though," he told them, tapping away on his laptop.
"There's cctv in Downing Street?" Gwen asked.
"Yeah, installed it after the Slitheen incident apparently."
"Fat lot is good that's done them!" Jackie huffed. "I dunno. He's lucky we love him is all can say."
"Jacks, he's potentially a murderer!" Pete pointed out.
"Only politicians though." She shrugged.
Rose, Mickey and Pete stared at each other as she left the room.
"What was that?" Mickey asked.
Pete shook his head. "Denial. Gotta be in denial."
"She's not wrong, though," Owen said. "They just cock everything up and slow us down."
Everyone ignored him.
"Got it. We're in." Mickey scanned the screens looking for familiar figures. He found them in the Prime Ministers office.

"I've got a bit of deja vu, Jack. Only last time I was here. Everyone only THOUGHT I was trying to kill everyone. Oh and Rose was here too."
"You haven't killed them," Jack stated.
"Well, maybe not yet. Not completely."
Jack sighed. He didn't want to antagonise the Time Lord into making things worse. "So why here?"
"Why not? Always fun to create a panic."
Jack just blinked at him.
The Doctor looked up at the security cameras and waved. "I reckon Ricky the idiot has had enough time to hack in by now," he said, jumping on a table to get closer to one of them.
He stood there, staring into the lens. Not moving a muscle for what seemed like hours and Jack wondered if Rose was watching too.
XxXxX
"What's he doing?" Pete asked.
"I don't know," Rose breathed, staring into this stranger's face. He looked like the Doctor but not. Something about his face was all wrong, like someone wearing a Doctor mask. And his eyes; there was no warmth there at all.
"Creeping me out that's what!" Mickey declared. "He is seriously weird."
"Yeah, thanks for that," Rose grumbled.
"Sorry. At least Jack's still with him. He hasn't ditched him, that's a good sign right?"
"I guess." She couldn't tear her eyes away. It was like a cat watching a mouse, waiting to pounce. "It's like he's waiting for something. He knows we're watching."
"How do you figure?" Pete asked.
"Because if he's on camera we're always watching," Mickey surmised.
"Yup, every time," Rose said.
"So what do we do? Can he see us?" Pete stepped back from the computer.
"He's an alien not a cyborg, he can't plug into a camera and reverse the feed," Mickey scoffed. "Can he?!" An edge of fear crept into his voice.
"Don't be daft," Rose snorted then reached for a tea towel to cover the webcam just in case.
After a few more moments the Doctor's face twisted slightly into a sneering smile before he blinked and jumped back down to the floor.
"Oh this is BORING!," he yelled. "Come on Jack. Let's find some real trouble."
"Where's he going?" Pete demanded.
"Mickey, track him through the cameras as far as you can," Rose told him.
"Already on it."
"Owen? You guys still there?"
"Yeah, we've got the feed too, we can see him. For now."
"He's not likely to come looking for you lot, I doubt you're on his radar at the minute. See if your sensors can pick up the TARDIS. He's probably leaving the planet but you can never tell with him. We need to figure out what kind of trouble he's in the mood for these days," Rose sighed. She was quite proud of herself. As long as she kept thinking of him as an enemy instead of the Doctor she could keep it together.
"TARDIS has gone from Downing Street," Mickey announced.
"Rose," Pete stepped beside her. "Are we all safe here? Should we move? I mean you said that the Doctor, our Doctor, couldn't say how this one would react to us. Wouldn't it be better to find somewhere safe?"
Rose hesitated.
"Pete might be right Rose. Not exactly easily defendable here is it?" Mickey said.
"How many of you?" Gwen's voice piped up.
"Three adults, one baby and a dog," Mickey replied.
"Can you get to Cardiff? We've got room at the hub, plus we can try and track his movements from here. Jack's apartment is sitting empty."
Rose looked at her family. "Yeah. Yeah, ok. Thanks Gwen. We'll be on our way soon." Hanging up in Torchwood she turned away from the now empty monitor. "Right. Pack only the essentials. We're travelling light. Mum, pack. Now. Mickey, next train to Cardiff; when and how long?"
XxXxX
Rushing down the stairs Rose heard a familiar sound and her stomach dropped as her phone rang.
"TARDIS activity in your location," Tosh said urgently.
"Yeah. He's here," Rose gulped as she hung up. "Drop the bags and don't move."
"I'm coming with you," Mickey told her in a tone that brokered no argument.
"Fine but stay back. We don't know what he's gona be like." Taking a deep breath she reached for the street door and stepped out.
"Rose!" A voice called from her right. "Hey baby, long time no see!" The voice drawled.
"What does this prick want?" Mickey muttered.
"Not now Jimmy," she told the newcomer as she saw movement come from the TARDIS doors.
There he was; no coat, no soft brown suit. All black and imposing. She felt her hearts hammer in her chest and she was sure he'd be able to hear them. What would he make of her? According to her Doctor she was mostly Gallifreyan in biology but still so very human. What would he think? Would he accept her as she is? Or think her an abomination?
"I thought you'd dumped Mickey for someone else?" Jimmy continued. He followed her eye-line. "Oh!" He laughed. "Bit old for you isn't he? Or are you back with that idiot? Think you've lost her mate. Looks like she's traded you in for a younger model," he taunted. "She just can't make up her mind this one. Tell you what though; her blowjobs were almost worth the trou-" the word was cut off by a gulp as the Doctor stretched an arm out towards him.
Rose's breath caught as Jack grabbed for the Time Lord, only to be thrown to the ground with ease.
She looked round at Jimmy watching his face go blue as he gasped for air. "Stop it!" she yelled racing towards the Doctor. "Stop it please!" Pleading, she planted herself between them. "Don't do this. He's not worth it."
The Doctor's dark gaze snapped to her, unblinking. There was a flash of something across his face as he finally dropped his arm. His eyes raked over her once and with a sneer he turned back into the TARDIS, Jack following behind with a wink to her. The doors slammed and the TARDIS dematerialised.
Rose let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding and collapsed to her knees. "Check him," she told Mickey when he rushed to her side. "Make sure he's alive."
Jackie and Pete came racing out, arms full of bags and baby.
"Rose! Are you alright?" her mum asked.
"I'm fine, he didn't hurt me. Didn't even speak to me. Is he alright?"
Pete looked over at Mickey. He was doing CPR. "Doesn't look good," he told her grimly.
"Oh no you don't Jimmy Stone. Call an ambulance." Rose shot to her feet and ran to Mickey's side, taking over the compressions as Mickey breathed. "Don't you dare, you bastard. I'm not losing him because of you!"
Minute after agonising minute passed with no change. All she kept thinking was he guilt the Doctor would carry over this idiots death. When the ambulance arrived, they took over as the others watched on. A gasp of air signalled his return.
"What happened?" Jimmy looked around him, completely bemused. There wasn't a mark in him.
