The first thing they saw and felt was Jack's concern at the Doctor's rant.
"Arrogant, foolish, degenerate. How could you possibly think you'd get away with that? Defiling our mind, letting her in. Think I wouldn't notice? I'll show you. I'm in charge now. You've had your fun for almost a millennia. Now it's my turn." He looked angry and disgusted.
Things jumped.
The Time Lord stood staring at the dying creature before them "Why would I want to do that? They're nothing, a footnote in history at best." He looked round at what was left of the village and sighed. "Although. I've seen better wars. Ended some of them.
Remember that feeling, Jack? Having someone's life in your hands? How your whole being was singing?"
Rose couldn't help but see how much the Doctor was enjoying himself, watching all the death around him.
"No, no, no, no, no, no. What have I done? No, no!" Dragging himself upright, the Doctor met his friend's angry gaze for a moment. Shaking his head as tears sprang to his eyes, he darted for the door.
They next saw the Doctor through the steam, curled in the corner of the shower, sobbing.
"What have I done?" he said over and over. "I've ruined everything."
"No you haven't. Like I said it didn't happen," Jack replied.
"But it did! I can see it…. I can…feel it." The Doctor retched but nothing came up.
"We'll sort it out." Jack rested his hand on the Doctor's shoulder and felt how much he was trembling, his unguarded misery flowing through Jack at the touch.
Rose's heart felt like it was shattering and her stomach lurched.
The Doctor shook his head in protest.
"Hey! Look at me! We will fix this," Jack had told him.
"How can I go back to Rose now? What will I do without her?"
"He won't hurt her again. I'll make sure of it. Besides, he's having too much fun hurting me."
Jack withdrew his hands, clearing his throat. He looked at Rose then Mickey. Predictably Rose looked shocked, tears pooling in her eyes. Mickey just looked blank.
"Wow," Mickey said eventually. "That's messed up."
"Understatement of the year," Jack declared.
"He…..I…..You could feel that much misery?" Rose asked, her heart still aching and her throat right.
"Honestly it was worse. I've been thinking about it a lot but I just can't get my head around it."
"Around what?" Mickey asked.
"How it must feel to essentially wake up and find a stranger has been…." He gestured, not wanting to say it. "Or did he know what was happening but unable to stop it? You know the Doctor. That kind of thing isn't high on his list unless it's with Rose, in fact I'm not sure it was even on a list before you, not really."
"Ok that makes it even more messed up," Mickey announced feeling a little nauseous.
Rose suddenly exited the room heading for the nearest toilet, the urge to be sick overwhelming, Jack hot in her heels, waving for Mickey to stay put.
He sat, mulling things over. He'd been angry for Rose when he'd found out about the incident in the bar. He'd never thought it could happen. Now he was realising the Doctor had been used and abused; quite literally. He wondered where the Time Lord was, if he was ok. He pulled out his mobile phone and made a decision. Scrolling through his phone book he pressed the call button.
"Hi Boss, it's Mickey. Guess you figured that from my voice. Mickey the idiot strikes again. I was just…. I dunno. I knew you wouldn't answer but I hope you get this message. We're worried about you, Rose most of all obviously. Hey look, at least let us know you're alive huh?" He paused. "I'm sorry, for…"
"Mickey? Where's Jack? We've got an alert," Owen shouted through the hub. "Looks juicy."
"He'll be back in a minute," he called back. "Sorry Boss, duty calls. Send us a text yeah? Something. I'm sorry for…you know. Laters." He ended the call, not feeling any better. He wasn't sure what he'd been expecting. Sure the Doctor had stolen his girlfriend but he'd made Mickey's life so much better, he just hoped they'd get to see him again. With a deep sigh he stood and went to join Jack's team at the monitors to find out what was happening.

"I didn't think I could cry anymore." Rose told him.
Jack sighed, "I'm sorry. Maybe this was a mistake."
She shook her head. "No. I guess I should be relieved that he didn't want it, or didn't just let it happen. But feeling how much it hurt him? You hear things when you're a teenager; about blokes forcing themselves on your mates after a night out, Jimmy tried it once. Got a knee in delicate places. But in all the scenarios I've ever come up with, NEVER did I think he'd be sort of on the receiving end. I mean it's just so complicated. He literally asked for it but he didn't. And he's not even here for us to help him! Do you think he'll ever come back?"
"I hope so Rosie. I really hope so." Jack hugged her tight as Mickey burst through the door.
"Sorry Jack. We've got a problem."

"Well how many are out there?" Jack demanded.
'Can't get a fix to be accurate,' Tosh replied over comms.
"Then Guess!" he yelled. Firing his pistol blindly around their cover. "This is not what I needed today!"
"More coming up the left hand side!" Mickey called.
"Rose? Where are you?"
"Got chased to the second floor. No way out here that I've found yet. Only door to the outside is sealed shut or something."
"Stay hidden, if we survive this well come and find you!" Jack replied.
"Ok that's comforting, thanks."
"You know me; ever the optimist."
'What's got them so worked up? We haven't kicked the nest lately have we?' Ianto asked.
"You mean other than me and the Doctor getting that gauntlet back?" Jack replied.
A huff was the only reply he got.
"Jack, we've got to retreat. We need to get out of this building now," Owen told him as he fires shots at more advancing weevils.

Some of them had followed her upstairs. She could hear them skulking around. Ducking down a corridor she tried to hold her breath as she pressed herself into a wall. Without warning, a hand gently circled her wrist.
"Run!"
