Kageyama lay in the hospital bed, doing his best to hide behind his long black bangs. Everything was fuzzy, vague outlines except that one orange blur that was Hinata. He tried hard to focus on that, on that one bright spot, instead of the massive hole inside him that threatened to swallow him up.
Hinata sat hunched over on the hard, cold seat right next to the bed, his fists clenched tight in his lap. The doctor droned on in the background but he wasn't listening. All that mattered was that Kageyama.. at least for the time being, couldn't see.
He thought of Kageyama, how he always hit the ball just right, how he noticed everything on the court; how he would jokingly rest his arm on Hinata's head when they walked home after practice, and how he could cling to him like a koala and no matter how many times Kageyama complained and threatened him; he would never let him go. He looked over at Kageyama now, his head was turned away and he had pulled his bangs down over his face, like he did when he was really down, like he was retreating somewhere very deep down inside himself. Hinata lost it. "NO! No no no, just stop!" He yelled at the doctor, leaping to his feet. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Kageyama start but he was too far gone to stop. "There has to be something we can do, like.. like a surgery...or.. well I don't know YOU'RE THE DOCTOR DAMMIT"
"Things like that -" the doctor started quietly, but Hinata cut him off, " Please! you don't know Kageyama, you don't have any idea how strong he is. Even if there's even the smallest chance we still have to..to.." his voice cracked and he furiously wiped the tears from his eyes, trying to continue.
Kageyama heard all this, and he could tell Hinata was close to breaking down, that his temper wouldn't last, and he knew it would be better if the doctor just left. So he reached out towards Hinata's voice, groping around until he found Hinata's hand, and held on tight. Hinata sank down onto the chair, gripping Kageyama's big, calloused hand as hard as he could. The doctor, mercifully takin stock of the situation, quietly left and as soon as the door closed Hinata started sobbing, more than Kageyama had ever seen.. or heard. So Kageyama carefully pulled him up onto the bed next to him, and let Hinata bury his head in his chest while he rested his head on Hinata's soft curls and let the tears come.
