Point Me In The Direction of Albuquerque

Chapter 6 - Help Is On Its Way

New York City

9:00 am

"Harvey Specter," Harvey answered his phone.

"Mr. Specter, this is Douglas King of the FBI. I understand you are Ms. Donna Paulsen's boss at Pearson Hardman?"

Harvey sat up a little straighter at his desk. He had been waiting for a call from Louis or Louis' buddy Joshua Banter to tell him about Donna. Harvey came to work because he knew that if he had not appeared then Jessica would have been pumping Louis or Mike for information. At the moment, having just gotten back on his mentor's right side, the last he wanted was to have to tell her about Donna's predicament. Besides he had work to do and there was nothing better than work to divert his attention from Donna.

"I am. What is your business with Donna?" Harvey asked.

"As I said, I am with the FBI and she called me last night. She said that she called you as well very early this morning."

"Yes, she did, but she didn't tell me you were with the FBI," Harvey challenged.

There was silence on the other end. Harvey could. He could feel an uneasiness from the other end of the line. Harvey was not a patient man when someone he cared for was in trouble, so hearing silence on the other end was a waist of time.

"Mr. King? Are you there?"

"Yes," was the simple answer.

"So, what are you doing about Donna's situation?"

"We are handling it, Mr. Specter be assured. We have had an ongoing investigation with Elliott Holmgren for a few years now. He is a very particular businessman who deals with human trafficking in various methods."

"Donna told me something about that. What can I do?"

"For now, I need the name and phone number of the lawyer Joshua Banter. I want to make him aware that the FBI is at his disposal should other measures not work."

"If you know all about this guy and this business, why don't you just go in there and arrest him?"

"We plan to, Mr. Specter, but we can't spook this guy again. He has a tight circle of accomplices. As a matter of fact, that is how we tracked Holmgren this time. We were able to turn one in his company."

"How can I help?"

"How fast can you get on a plane?"

"I'm there..."

The previous evening 8:00 PM

Albuquerque

They were six at the dinner table that night: Donna, Elliot (her husband), Sheriff Wayne, Robin, Jack, and Rose.

Sheriff Wayne addressed Donna.

"I suppose you are still wondering why you were taken and brought here."

Donna was afraid to drink or eat anything, so she just sat for a few minutes and glared at Sheriff Wayne.

"Yes, I am wondering what type of pawn I am in this little game of yours," Donna stated and then took a sip of water.

"We're not here to poison you, Donna, dear. Please eat up. I assure you Robin and Rose are wonderful cooks. I've eaten here many times," Elliott oozed. "In fact the opposite is true. I need you in the best of health as you are going to give me an unique child."

"In your dreams, Elliott," Donna responded icily.

Sheriff Wayne who sat at the head of the table and closest to Donna on the left placed his hand on Donna's arm.

"Don't worry, Mrs. Holmgren, no one will hurt you or do anything to permanently damage you."

Donna silently and roughly disengaged her arm from Sheriff Wayne's grasp.

"You will have the very best gynecologist/obstetrician," Robin volunteered. "He delivered both my children." Robin's smile was brittle as if she knew exactly what was Donna's life would be as Mrs. Elliott Holmgren.

"This doctor will take your general health and then he will estimate how long a pregnancy will take once you're ready," explained Elliott. He rubbed his hands together and smiled devilishly. His voice exuded silky smoothness.

Apparently Elliott was under the impression that he was kind Donna thought.

"Mrs. Holmgren, " Robin addressed her again. " I think we should give you an overview of what will happen now. I think we owe you that much."

Donna focused her eyes on her plate. She had not eaten much because she was not hungry after the lunch she shared with Marily and also because her nerves would not let her keep anything down. The last thing she wanted was to show her vulnerability. She had to maintain a hold on her nerves and sneak her phone calls to Doug and Harvey to get herself out of this surreal situation.

Donna's eyes then slid surreptitiously sneaking a look at Jack. He was a tad uncomfortable it seemed and silent; whereas, previously he had been gregarious. Her eyes then flickered to Rose sitting next to her brother further down the table. Her dark eyes were downcast. She, at the moment, behaved very different than the outgoing young woman she had met two nights ago. Rose acted demure and remained quiet at the moment offering no input either way.

Donna looked around the table. As her eyes shifted from one person to another, she experienced a horrible sense of foreboding. She was not eager to hear what they thought she was going to withstand. She would cooperate but if they think she's will be impregnated by some insidious method so this man continue his human trafficking practices she'd rather...well she wasn't sure what she would rather!

"Does Donna know you're with the FBI?" Harvey asked Doug King on his cell as he hurriedly trotted through LaGuardia Airport.

"No, I didn't want to raise her hopes or have her accidentally make them suspicious by telling her," Doug said.

"You don't know Donna," Harvey thought. "She probably has you all figured out without you saying a word."

"Well.."

"She can do that," Harvey said.

Harvey finally made it to his gate for his flight through to New Mexico. Before he had to quiet his phone, Doug had given him explicit instructions on how they were going to rescue Donna and shut down Holmgren's human and baby trafficking practices.

Donna was escorted back to her room by Rose.

"Rose, if you don't mind me asking, how can your family live with themselves? This man and his associates use your brother and his charm and good looks to mentally assault women so this guy can impregnate them and then sell their babies to the highest bidder. That's atrocious!"

Rose swallowed hard. She did not agree nor did she disagree with Donna's statements.

"Well, at least he doesn't kill the children or the women who don't sell," Rose tried to justify.

"No, he may not do that but he keeps them captive by one or other method. The children grow up here. I've seen Marily's mother teach children of all ages that are orphans...this is intolerable!"

"Donna!" Rose said stopping in her tracks. Donna stopped and turned to look at Rose who looked back and forth as if someone would overhear their conversation.

"What!" Donna said in a more hushed tone then her former rant had been.

"Please be patient. You will be fine. Nothing bad will hurt you. If you do what Mr. Holmgren tells you, he may let you go and annul your marriage. He's done that before I believe. I'm not sure, but he really has some good traits."

"Yes, so did Satan, Rose!" Donna turned on her heel and walked away disgust, fright, and anxiety filling her being.

Joshua Banter, Doug King, and Harvey Specter met in Doug King's hotel room which was next door to Donna's room.

Harvey shook Doug's hand not disguising the fact that Doug did not fit his conception of what a FBI agent looked like. Harvey expected a tall James Bond type, so this slightly overweight dull complexioned man surprised him.

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Specter. No, I can tell by the look on your face I know I am not what you were expecting as to what an FBI agent looks like," Doug said as he invited Harvey and Joshua chairs at his room's round table.

"That obvious? I assure you my poker face is much better," Harvey responded taking the leather chair proffered.

Joshua Banter, Louis' friend, had gone from law school and a private practice to a D.A. in his district in New Mexico back to a criminal lawyer. However, Joshua did have a few larger private clients and one of them was a father of one of Elliott Holmgren's former wives/baby producer.

Harvey listened with his gut engorged with bile at the thought of what Holmgren did. His blood boiled at the thought of what was happening to Donna. Joshua had not minced his words as he described the ritualistic process that Elliott used for these women to produce babies on The Black Market.

"What happened to your client's daughter?"

"She had to sign a NDA before Elliott annulled their marriage. Some of the women aren't so lucky and are put into semi-slavery on the reservation," Banter said. Banter himself athletically built with a thick full head of blonde wavy hair. He wore a slight beard which shone with red highlights in the light shining through the sheer curtains covering the large patio window next to the table.

"What do you think Donna's chances of bargaining for her release?"

Doug nodded and said, "Well, as I had indicated Holmgren has a leak in his system. Jack 'Holmgren'..."

"A relation?" Harvey swiftly queried.

"No, not really," Doug continued. "He is permitted to use the name and other advantages to lure the women that Holmgren picks out in advance."

"You're telling me that this baby trafficker knew all about Donna's whereabouts?" Harvey interjected and shot up out of his seat.

"Not exactly. The FBI has had a bead on her whereabouts as well," Doug offered as an explanation to Harvey. Doug wanted give Harvey more information but he decided to wait for a little bit to see where the conversation progressed.

"Why is that? I was an ADA in Manhattan for five years and I never once encountered where it was lawful for private citizens to be followed by the FBI!" Harvey warmed to his tune and was absolutely horrified by this abuse by a lawyer and federal government entity.

"Mr. Specter!" Joshua ventured. "The reason we followed Ms. Paulsen's travel plans was that through Jack Holmgren we knew that Holmgren was seeking a specific type woman this time."

"That's correct," Doug quickly agreed. "Since Mr. Banter has the right ear of Elliott Holmgren he has been acting as an informant for the FBI."

"Holmgren was tired of brunettes, blondes, dark skin, Native American or other. He specifically requested a tall redhead with light skin and hazel green eyes. She had to have a sense of fashion and be very intelligent," Banter picked up.

"That still doesn't explain how he came across Donna," Harvey said.

"No, it does not. That's where Jack comes in," Doug began.

Harvey resumed his seat. He looked at his watch nervously.

Josh and Doug looked at each other.

Doug interrupted Harvey's thoughts. "Her doctor's appointment is in two hours. We have plenty of time."

"Of course. Continue with how this Jack plays a part in this obscene show," Harvey exhaled.

"Holmgren likes to think of Jack as him only 30 years younger. Jack sits in the casino or the restaurant or some convenient place to scout the single women who check into the hotel. Holmgren usually gives Jack a strict set of rules and requirements. Jack uses these standards to charm women under his spell and then takes them to Las Vegas by one or other subterfuge and winds up having them marry Holmgren," Doug expanded. "In this case, I introduced myself to Donna at the pool the day she arrived. She invited me to her free breakfast the next morning and she told me she about her date with Jack the previous night and her date the following morning. He lured her to Las Vegas with a promise of a hot air balloon ride. Holmgren owns one of the largest balloon manufacturers in the west. He also has a team that takes tourists on hot air balloon rides. The plan was to drug Donna at dinner and then take her out via an ambulance, drive to an all night chapel and marry."

Harvey pondered for a moment in disbelief. He pinched the bridge of his nose with his head down. He looked up at both Doug and Josh. He shook his head back and forth. He felt so helpless. If he had known what he was walking into by employing Louis' friend, he would have raised an army himself to break Donna out of that reservation. Harvey was more than happy to show up in Albuquerque to help free Donna, but he still had no idea what part he was supposed to play. Harvey tried to look ahead when he and Donna would be safely on a plane heading for home. If any of these bastards harmed a hair on her head heads would roll. He would get a license to practice law in New Mexico just to protect her if these fools could not get her out of this away from Holmgren's baby production farm.

"Mr. Specter, we will get her out of this unscathed," Doug assured Harvey attempting to dampen the man's fears for his secretary. While Doug was getting acquainted with Donna at their breakfast, she had mentioned Harvey once or twice. Nothing derogatory or glowing but she mentioned him nonetheless. Looking at Harvey now and his intense eagerness to rescue Donna, Doug felt there was more between them then just boss and secretary. It was not Doug's place to say anything but just to do his job and return Donna to this man who seemed to care so much.

In response to Doug's words, Harvey just nodded.

10:00 am

Albuquerque

Donna had eaten a hearty breakfast. She knew now from what Sheriff Wayne and Elliott had planned that they needed her to be healthy. She reasoned the last thing they would do was poison her; unless, of course, she continued to rebel and fight with them. Donna just felt that their little plan of keeping her somewhat captive and monitoring her ovulation would not result in her having yet another child to sell on the Black Market. She knew that Harvey and whoever he employed would result in her returning to New York City and back to the firm.

While she was watching TV in her room, Marily visited her again. They talked as if they were old friends. Marily watched the talk show with Donna and then eventually wanted to talk with her.

"Donna."

Donna turned to look at Marily. Seeing the disquiet serious look in Marily's dark eyes caused Donna to turn off the television and give Marily her undivided attention.

"What is it, Marily?" Donna asked comfortingly. "You look like your the one Holmgren wants to have his baby."

"I'm really going to miss you if your friend Harvey comes and rescues you," Marily stated. "I don't have anyone here that I can really talk to."

"Not even your mother? She loves you very much," Donna offered.

"I know, but she doesn't like to talk about anything like what happens with the babies and the women that come and go as Elliott's "wives"," Marily remarked using air quotes to emphasize the word "wives".

"She just wants to protect you. I think I know how she feels," Donna indicated. She slid an arm around the young girl's shoulders sliding closer to her. The feeling and the motion were similar in feeling to how Donna would sometimes comfort Rachel in her ongoing pursuit of Mike Ross.

Marily leaned her head on Donna's shoulder, and Donna placed her head on top of Marily's.

Donna had an idea. She popped her head and looked at Marily.

"You know what?"

Marily shook her head and gave Donna a half smile at Donna's waiting expression.

"No, what?"

"I'm going to give you my phone number and my address. You give me yours and when all this blows over and I'm back in New York we can talk or text to each other. Would you like that?"

Marily smiled. "Yes, Donna, I would love that."

"I would, too. Let me have your phone," Donna said as Marily dug it out of her back pocket and handed it to her.

Donna quickly put her numbers and her address into Marily's phone while Marily quickly entered her information into Donna's phone.

"Your mother won't be upset if you talk to me, will she?

"No, of course not. She admires you and she is hoping that you are successful in leaving this place and exposing all this evil that is condoned."

"You are a wonderful young woman, Marily, and I will never forget you," Donna said hugging the young woman.

"Neither will I," Marily said hugging Donna back tightly.

As they continued to watch the talk show, Robin opened the door to Donna's room and said, "Time to see the doctor Mrs. Holmgren."

Donna reluctantly rose and put on her coat. She winked at Marily as she left.

"See ya later." Donna patted Marily's shoulder as she walked out the door.

"Jack?" Joshua Banter answered the phone.

"Yes, it's me, Josh. We're moving out."

"Same gynecologist's office?"

Josh listened to the quiet intense tone of Jack's voice. Something sounded off.

"Is there an issue here?" Josh asked.

"No," Jack said hurriedly. "Nothing's wrong. It's just that you said you would get immunity for my mother and sister. I just want to make sure."

Josh could hear the worry in Jack's voice.

"Yes, Doug confirmed that he could get immunity for your mother and sister. Your father will have to be charged as an accomplice and you are immune because you are our informant."

Josh felt for the man, but someone had to pay for this atrocity. Sheriff Wayne was an ready and willing accomplice in more than just Donna Paulsen's case.

"We leaving, Josh. Talk to you later."

Elliott walked with his arm around Donna's waist. Donna kept pulling away not hiding her distaste at being touched by a man whom she had no intention of touching in any way. She was glad that if it came to her being impregnated it would be by artificial insemination because if she was forced to have sex with this horrible man she would surely be guilty of murder.

Accompanying them was Jack's father, Sheriff Wayne, and Robin. They stopped at the SUV and waited as Elliott tried to hand Donna into the back seat. She shoved Elliott's hand away and climbed into the vehicle herself. As she was dressed in jeans and flats, she climbed nimbly into the back of the Navigator.

"Dad," Jack said taking his father aside. "I'm not going with you after all. I promised mom and Rose that I would repair the two sinks in the house as well as the kitchen sink in the Long House."

"Are you sure? I know Elliott always likes for you to come on these excursions. It makes it look more appropriate," Wayne said to his son.

"I'm sure he won't mind. I mean he knows there needs to be maintenance done and this saves him money," Jack said patting his dad on the upper arm.

"Ok, I'll see you later," Sheriff Wayne said as he went around to the driver's side of the truck.

Elliott Holmgren, Sr. had accompanied Donna to the truck and had walked back to speak with Robin to let her know what type of care Donna would need once she came home from the doctor. He saw the conversation between Jack and his father and then watched as Jack walked away instead of getting into the vehicle.

"Robin."

"Yes, Mr. Holmgren," Robin responded as if she were speaking to royalty.

"Mrs. Holmgren will just need a little extra food probably because she may be anemic. Well, you know what to do. We'll talk later," Elliott said and kissed Robin on the cheek. He then got into the back of SUV joining Donna for the ride to Dr. Belsarius.
