Chapter 39: Atteritta's Final Battle
P'li's POV
After femke returned from wherever she had disappeared to, we went back to Songpan and together with Lord Zuko into the Mayor's Office, who was busy with some paperwork and looked up rather annoyed as we barged in.
"Mayor, I'm here together with family and friends of the woman." Zuko started as he nodded to me in particular, which made me nod in agreement to this. "We hoped that seeing her niece might convince you to let her go."
"Niece? That's impossible." The mayor snapped as he looked to the side. "She has no family left."
"I'm her niece." I stated firmly as I took a step towards the man, causing him to back off. "I'm the daughterof Lee-Chang; Atteritta's older brother."
"So he managed to survive." The mayor whispered to himself.
"No thanks to you." I snapped as I looked away.
"Just let her go." Korra said. "I will personally make sure she won't be troublesome again."
"No"The mayor stated. "I won't endanger the world by letting her go."
"She won'tbe. Not allcombustion benders are like Combustion Man!" Ghazan said. "We know. We live with one."
"You don't even know whyCombustion Man was the way he was." I added with a firm voice.
"I'm the Avatar, you know that right? Why would you refuse a request from me?" Korra asked.
"You don't control me. No one does." The mayor smirked as he spread out his arms and I could feel a dark aura spread across the room.
Darkar does
I thought as I stepped back towards my friends and we all got into a bending stance.
"Please. You haveto let her go." Femke begged while reaching to her shoe, of all things. "She might die otherwise."
"That's the plan." The man smirked as he rose from the floor, looking at us with contempt. "My master will reward me if i bring the Voortrix energy that resides within her."
"What is he talking about?" Ghazan wondered as he looked at Femke.
"Of course! All members of the Voortrix line have a little Voortrix inside them." Femke realized as she gasped at me. "Not just you are Voortrix the whole Lee Chang family is."
"That means we allcarry Voortrix energy inside us." I realized with a shocked look.
"Which means your parents, grandparents and great grandparents were all Voortrix carriers." Femke finished, looking at the Mayor with shock. "They just didn't know how to use it."
"And my master rewarded me with this spell that keeps Atteritta from being able to die and allows me to turn back time if she does. He gave it to me when i brought him the flame parts of the girl's parents." The mayor smirked, which caused me to gasp. My grandparents...
"Why turn back time if she dies? You wanther dead, why not killher?" Allerys asked.
"To lure you here, of course." The Mayor smirked.
"You monster!"I called out before I launched a combustion shot at him, realizing my grandparents and my aunt had been nothing but bait for this horrible man.
"Mayor, you're under arrest for murder and attempted murder of Atteritta." Lin called as she walked forward and shot her metal cables at the man, who dodged them with ease and shot a dark force at her. Before the shot hit her, Femke came in between.
"No!" She called as she caught the blow, slumping down afterwards.
"Mom!"Toph called as she ran towards Femke.
"Grandma!"Su called as she sat down by Femke's side together with Lin, who looked at Femke with a look of pure disbelief.
"She saved my life." Lin said after a moment. "She saved me."
"She has." Toph nodded solemnly. "Family can do stupid things but she always loved you."
"Grandma." Lin whispered as tears formed in the corners of her eyes. I knelt down and felt Femke's pulse. Faint but still there.
"Femke…" I whispered as I closed my eyes and a single tear dropped down on her chest.
"I believe you. Please don't do this." Lin whispered as tears from the corner of her eyes fell on her chest as well. I heard the sounds of a battle in the background, but I ignored them. I was too focused on Femke and Lin to do anything. As soon as Lin's tears fell on Femke's chest, a light illuminated her it, making a heart shaped pendant appear on it as well as a heart shaped bag around her hip.
A new power? So soon after Believix?
I thought as I saw Femke was opening her eyes.
"Grandma!"Su and Lin called when they saw Femke had woken up. After this the two women hugged her.
"I'm not that easy to get rid off." Femke said with a smirk as she hugged her daughters back.
"You were hit on the heart. You could have died." Su said with a surprised look.
"I'm made of sterner stuff." Femke smirked as she got up, noticing the pendant and hip bag.
"Charmix? Again?" She wondered as she made the Voortrix book appear and turned a few pages after Believix before gasping.
"Cool. A similar power to the old Charmix." She grinned as she showed me the image and text next to it.
"Linkix. Earned by a Voortrix fairy by forging a deep connection." I read, which got me smiling. "Amazing."
"Let's go help the others." Femke said as she flew up.
"No need to let them have all the fun." I agreed as we joined the others.
"Electric fire!" Femke called.
"Elemental Blast!"I called as I also shot.
"Energy Bane!" The Mayor called, spreading a dark aura around the room causing all of us to change back into our regular selves.
"What happened?" Zaheer groaned as he leaned on his crutches to keep himself standing.
"I don't know." Femke groaned in reply as she leaned on Su and Lin, the wound on her chest affecting her situation much more now.
"I can barely feel my powers." Noatak groaned while he and Allerys held up a pretty banged up Tarrlok.
"We have to get out of here, he's too powerful." Floxy said as he landed on Femke's shoulder with a worried look.
"Floxy is right. We tried talking, now we have to get her out the hard way." Zuko nodded.
"I'll try one more time. Just find a way out." Korra nodded to us.
"Be careful." Femke said with a firm nod as the Voortrix formed a close circle and waited for Korra.
"Last warning! Let Atterita go."
"You're not demanding anything in this place." The Mayor stated as he looked at Korra with hate.
"Please stop this. What do you gain from this but lies?" Korra called as she looked at the mayor pleadingly. The man laughed and launched Korra into Lord Zuko, who looked at her worriedly.
"Korra!" Lin and Su called while Femke ran to Lord Zuko and helped Korra stand back up.
"That wretch is not going anywhere." The Mayor said.
"Let's get to safety." Femke whispered as she helped Zuko to prop Korra up before they all teleported away.
Atteritta's POV
Earlier
After that flash I assumed I would have been transported out of the City and into a whole new world to see and explore, but that didn't happen. The magic Femke had told me about hadn't worked.
Or she didn't care
I thought as I walked back to my own house. They did come back before, to check how things were going as well as to explain their magic was still not strong enough to break me out by just teleporting away.
So they do care That's rare
I Thought as we all sat at Aleia's for a while and drank tea together after which they had to return to Republic City.
"We still have a trial to attend but as soon as we're back we're going to get you out of here. You'll see." P'li smiled as she ruffled my hair with a smile on her face. After that they went back to Republic City. I was starting to fall asleep after hours of trying when I was woken up by the hatch opening and someone gently picking me up.
"Okay, we have to be very quiet and make our way to the tunnel. We can't be seen. Negotiating failed. We have to solve this the hard way." I heard femke whisper to someone near me as she placed a gentle hand on the back of my head, as she started to move with me on her arm. Where she was taking me I didn't know but I just hoped it was away from here.
"Should I take her? You're hurt." I heard Zaheer whisper with a worried voice.
"Don't worry, I'll manage." Femke whispered back.
"Okay but do tell if you want to take a break." Zaheer whispered back as I heard the hatch creak softly. I started to notice the soft scents that always were in Aleia's house.
"Carefull, the last step creaks." Aleia's voice whispered close as I felt her soft hand on my back as which Femke moved out her arm. After Femke had moved her arm I felt something warm cover me. "That will keep her warm"
"Is the car ready?" Zaheer's voice whispered as I felt Femke wrapping her arms around me again, after which we started to walk again.
"Lord Zuko just gave us the sign. We're all set to go." P'li whispered back with a determined voice.
I opened my eyes a little to look at Femke. She looked wounded but despite that she had a determination in her eyes I hadn't seen before. She would give her life to get me out of here.
She's wasting her time but it's nice of her to try
I thought, smiling when Femke looked my way.
"Hey Atteritta." femke smiled as she saw I had woken up. "How are you feeling?"
"You could have just woken me up." I said.
"Sorry, we figured you needed the rest. Once we're out of here, there's probably a lot of things you'd want to do." Femke smiled as she put me down but as she did that a small electric shock went through my leg, causing me to jump back in Femke's arms.
"What's wrong?" femke asked me as she looked at me with worry.
"I felt a jolt in my leg as I stepped on the ground." I said as I looked at the ground unsurely.
"That's odd." Zaheer remarked as he got on one knee and touched the ground. "And not natural."
"Maybe it came from something on Atteritta herself." Femke started, turning pale as she suddenly seemed to realize something.
"We have to get going! Now!" She called, but soon after we had started to run towards the exit the earth underneath us started to rumble and all off a sudden we were above ground again, surrounded.
"Can we go back down?" Ghazan said as all Voortrix gathered around me and Femke who was still holding me, this made me revisit an old memory…
My parents were running towards the forest, the cold breeze was touching my cheek for the first time in ages as I clutched my mother. She was holding onto a small bag with the few belongings we had left while my father had a bag on his back so he could hold my older brother by the hand. We were almost at the edge of the forest when suddenly, an alarm went off, causing my father to look back.
"Chang, run!" Father called as he pushed my brother out before him, who nodded and immediately started to run towards the edge of the forest, followed by father. Mother was slower due to her having to hold on to me and the bag.
"Hurry!" My father called as he ran back to help mother run, letting her drop the bag to gain speed. Just then, a few soldiers came up behind us.
"There they are!" One of them called.
"Don't let them get away!" The Mayor called as he also ran towards us but my father was faster and Combustion bended between us and the soldiers to create a distance and run towards my brother as fast as he could.
"We'll hold them off, take your sister, run and never come back." My father told my brother as he handed me to him. Chang nodded and held out his arms to accept me but there was no time to take me over and hide in time.
"Go, we'll follow as soon as we can. Just go!" My mother said as she pushed my brother in the bushes with tears in her eyes. "Take care of yourself."
That was the last thing she whispered before she turned around and started to face the Mayor's men. I would never see my brother again. He chose to run as mother had told him.
"Atteritta!"A voice called, causing me to snap out of my thoughts and look up, gasping when I saw an older looking version of my brother come out of the "car" Femke spoke off and blast his way towards us.
"Chang, it's not safe!" Lord zuko objected as he came into the circle as well.
"This is something I should have done a long time ago." My brother smiled as he took me over from Femke. "I didn't forget."
"Mom and dad told you…" I stammered as I looked into his eyes sadly, the grief and sorrow of everything that had happened to the both of us clear in his eyes as he hugged me.
"I promised them to never come back but deep down I have always hoped for an opportunity to hold you in my arms again." Lee sobbed as he held me close. "We're family. I would never abandon you nor did I ever want to abandon my only child."
"Hey!"A young boy exclaimed with his hands on his hips.
"My only biologicalchild." Chang chuckled as he rubbed the boy over his hair.
"Another marriage?" I asked.
"My wife was married before." Chang replied with a smile on his face which turned gloomy afterwards. "To the bastard that made your niece's life hellfor nine years."
"Just like mine?" I asked after a moment. "How long have I been locked up?"
"About fifty seven years." Chang admitted as he looked down with guilt.
"It felt longer" I said.
"Not the time!"Ilene shouted as Selvia nodded fiercely and she pointed to the many guards surrounding them, splitting only to let the Mayor approach.
"Didn't expect you to be back." The mayor said as he looked at Chang holding me with a firm look in his eyes.
"You're notgetting her back." Chang said as he combustion bended at the mayor, then ran as fast as he could towards a safe place only to be thrown back in the circle by a few of the Mayor's men.
"You're not going anywhere." The mayor said as one of his men firmly kicked my brother in the gut. "You'll end up the same as your parents."
"Dad!"Both P'li and the boy called as they ran to us and helped my brother stand back up.
"I know what happened. I've known for a long time you murderedthem." Chang said as he looked up with hate.
"There are ways to bring them back. My master told me of a powerful spell that can return people from the land of the dead." The mayor smirked, holding up a blue orb with the image of our parents in them. "All I want in return are the powers of your daughter and her friends."
"Lair!" Femke called "Such spells don't exist!"
"How would you know?" The mayor asked as he held up another, green orb. "Did you ever look for it?"
"Yes. More than once." Femke admitted while hanging her head sadly. "After Daniel and Dylan died I was desperate. I would have done anything to get them back."
"Mom." Toph whispered as she placed a hand on Femke's shoulder.
"But because of that I can assure you such a spell doesn't exist."
"I can assure you, the spell exists and giving me your powers can help with that." The mayor smirked after which he showed her an orb with in it the image of a young boy with a lock of white hair and greenish skin, smiling as he placed a hand on the side of the orb.
"Dylan." Femke whispered with tears in her eyes as she walked towards the orb and placed a hand on it.
"Hey Mom. How's it hanging?" Dylan asked as he smiled
"It's so good to see you again." Femke replied, smiling through her tears.
"Same. Dad couldn't come but he told me to say 'hi' from him." Dylan smiled.
"Say hi back for me okay? Take care of each other." Femke smiled as she took another step towards him.
"Until we meet again dear. Believix Voortrix!" She called, followed by a flash, after which she stood in her fairy form. Dylan looked at it with a smile on his face.
"Linkix!" Femke called, there was another flash and now she wore her heart shaped pendant and hip pouch.
"Linkix Lightning Crash!"Femke called as she shot at the orb before the Mayor could react, shattering it instantly as well as pushing the Mayor backwards.
"I love y-... " Dylan called with his hand outstretched towards Femke, who looked at him disappearing with tears in her eyes.
"I love you too. Goodbye." Femke whispered.
"Fool! Look what you've done!" A voice called out of nowhere after which the Mayor started to squirm in pain while a purple cloud formed around him.
"Forgive me master! I was sure she was going to fall for it!" The Mayor begged as his head made a few strange turns, after which red stripes appeared on his cheeks.
"He's a clone!" Femke gasped.
"Then where's the real Mayor?" Ghazan asked.
"We'll find out soon enough." Zaheer called as he crossed his arms, followed by the others.
"Believix Voortrix!" They all called after which a flash followed and when I looked up they were in their Fairy forms.
"Mister Lee! Get Atteritta in the car. Xai Bau, Tziza, Allerys; cover him!" Femke instructed as she and the others used their shields to defend them.
"Believix Aircrasher!" Zaheer called, shooting at the clone.
"Linkix Lightning Crash!" Femke called, dodging before protecting my brother and me with a shield in one hand as she shot back at the clone.
"Dark Sphere of Chaos!"The clone called as he blasted at Femke and Zaheer, who crashed into each other against a wall.
"Femke." Zaheer groaned as he got up. His girlfriend was lying under him and wasn't moving, unconscious. Despite the pain he was in, Zaheer refused to stand down and let his girlfriend get hurt.
Unbelievable how far they're willing to go for each other. Their love for each other must be very strong
I taught as the Clone walked to them with a grin on his face, a dark purple glow surrounding him as he did so.
"Now you'll bothdie." The Mayor smirked as he pointed his hand at the two lovers.
"Execution Circle!" He called.
"Air Shield."Zaheer called at the exact same time, countering the attack but he was no match. All he did was buying himself some time, managing to pull himself mostly over Femke to shield her when the blast hit him.
"Zaheer!"Everyone called with a shocked look.
"No." I gasped with tears in my eyes, while the mayor stood there, Smiling. As the smoke cleared, Zaheer's Voortrix didn't leave him. Instead he was lying over Femke with a peaceful smile as their hands laid on the floor closed into each other and their faces laid cheek to cheek.
"He shielded her." Ming Hua said before she saw Femke was stirring.
"That's what love does." P'li smiled.
"I would have done the same in his place." Noatak admitted smiling shyly at P'li.
"I just hope people realize it's not just romantic love that's important. Family. Friends. Those kinds of love are just as important." Tziza remarked. Her eyes gleaming as she said this. "We're all connected and that deep connection makes we're all willing to do whatever it takes for each other. No matter what the cost might be."
"Love is beautiful." I smiled as Femke opened her eyes, smiling when she saw Zaheer on top of her.
"Zaheer. Please get off me." Femke asked. Zaheer didn't reply. "Zaheer?" Femke asked again as she gently patted his cheek, careful not to hurt him. Still no reply, making the brunette sit up with a horrified look in her eyes. "No…Not again. Zaheer…Wake up. Please. Open your eyes."
"Femke…" P'li whispered before walking over to her and hugging her while she was sobbing loudly. As her tears hit his chest, a bright light flashed and a heart shaped pendant appeared on his chest as well as well as the heart shaped pouch soon after which Zaheer opened his eyes.
"What happened?" He groaned as he looked up, smiling when he saw Femke. "Why are you crying?"
"Zaheer?" Femke gasped, seeing her boyfriend was alright she beamed brightly before she fell around his neck, laughing.
"Easy. I've been gone for five seconds." Zaheer remarked with a smirk on his face as he held his girlfriend close.
"You were dying. " Femke said shocked. "Neverscare me like that again."
"No promises. We still have a world to save." Zaheer answered smiling before noticing the pendant on his chest. "A new power already?"
"Linkix." Femke said.
"Neat." Ghazan said while Femke and Zaheer got up, ready to fight. "Strong bond proven again."
"Fool! Do you have any idea what you have done?" The voice of Darkhar asked, making the mayor clone shrink away in fear.
"How was I supposed to know that they would gain a new power?" The Mayor clone asked with a desperate voice.
"You should have!"Darkhar exclaimed.
"I won't make that mistake again." The mayor smirked as he snapped his fingers and all off his men changed into colossal monsters. I screamed and clutched to my brother while Femke and Zaheer stood back to back and started to shoot at the monsters along with the others.
"These are annoying." Ming hua said after a while of attacking and counter attacking, without the monsters giving up.
"Where did they pick that up?" Ghazan asked dodging only just in time, making one monster crashed into another one.
"We're outmatched! How are we gonna beat them?"Noatak called, shooting a monster above Tarrlok, which immediately left him alone to turn on the person that shot at him.
"There's too many of them! And they're immune to magic!" Ghazan called as all of us were cornered.
"Linkix Lightning Crash!"Femke called.
"Linkix Wind Crash!"Zaheer called alongside her. The attacks hit the monsters in the chest but it barely scratched them.
"What do we do now?" P'li asked after trying a few Combustion shots that also failed.
"We have to come up with something quick." Femke groaned as she had to keep herself upright due to the pain in her chest.
"They're immune to our magic. Even your Linkix doesn't hurt them." Femke asked as she looked at the monsters with shock.
"We have to think of something." Zaheer groaned as he got smacked into a wall again.
"How is it possible your Linkix doesn't even scratch them?" Xai Bau asked as he gave Tziza a boost to get her on a monster to try and stab it down.
"I don't know! Most of the time new power means were able to beat current monsters." Femke said, dodging any monster coming her way using her powers.
"Why doesn't that work this time?" Ghazan asked trying to keep the monsters at bay with lavabending.
"I don't know!"Femke called desperately, getting in front of me and my brother with a shield up to protect us.
"Unless we find a way to beat them, we're doomed" Ghazan said as we all hid behind Femke, who looked at the monsters with widened eyes.
Femke's POV
I won't give up but what can we do?
I thought as I looked at the monsters with widened eyes.
How did these monsters get this powerful?
'Darkar gave them some of his own power'
Feria called in my head.
What do we do?
I thought back. Darkar was tol strong. Linkix wouldn't even scratch him.
'You need Elementrix to beat these monsters'
Feria said.
How do we gain it?
I asked, ready to do whatever it took to get strong enough to beat these things and save Atteritta but as she opened her mouth to answer the connection broke and I was leaning on an exhausted Zaheer. After a quick look around I realized I was the last one standing.
How did that happen?
I thought as I felt my feet started to wobble under me.
"I can't give up. I won't give up. NO!" The last part came out of my mouth as a greenish soundblast that I'd only seen before twice; during the trail of Noatak and Tarrlok and when Daniel faced off against Darkar's minions for the first time.
"The Ghost Wail? She isn't a ghost!"The mayor clone called as he looked at me with widened eyes.
"Retreat, you fool!" The voice off Darkar. I why. This was how Daniel vanquished his first minions.
"I can't!"the mayor screamed back. And in my last moment of consciousness I saw him explode.
Good riddance
I thought with a smirk right before I passed out, knowing Atteritta was safe.

A/N:
Surprise! The mayor was another clone minion of Darkar! What happened to the real mayor? Well I don't think I'll include it in any chapter, so i'll just reveal it here; very likely dead.
Just to clarify; Femke's father Megoron was a ghost from the Ghost Zone (where many dead Voorfieldians are) and sacrificed his own powers to seal away Femke's powers to make sure Darkar wouldn't find her until she was ready to fight him. Her ghostly wail appears only when she needs it.
That was all for now! Stick around for more chapters! And don't forget to thank paranoidgirl for her awesome work as beta reader and adviser
