Chapter 42: The Twelfth Voortrix
Normal POV
Far away, in an unknown cell, Kuvira looked at her chest with a shocked look, the medallion she wore around her neck since she had found it at the age of three, started to glow. It only did that once before.
"What is this power?" Kuvira muttered as she looked at the medallion with widened eyes. The first time had been roughly eight months ago. Just as she wanted to go talk to the governor of the Yai Province.
Kuvira checked the contract one last time. Just as she wanted to get out of the train, something odd happened. Her medallion, the one thing she had kept from her past life with her parents, started to glow.
'The Dark One has risen again. The twelve beings of light shall rise with him. Darkness will clash with light. Disorder will try to swallow hope, yet an act of true love shall enlighten the world.'
A voice called out of the medallion.
"Who said that?" Kuvira thought as she looked closely at the medallion. No one was close to her, not even when she checked with her bending. "I must have imagined it." She thought, shrugging before she put the medallion under her shirt again and walked off to meet the governor, completely forgetting what just happened
And now, the medallion was glowing again. And again she could hear the strange voice whisper the same thing.
"Who is 'The Dark one' anyway? Another enemy for the Avatar?" Shot through the former Uniter as she looked at the medallion. "Why would they tell me? And what about the twelve beings of light?" Kuvira thought about calling the guards and telling them about it all, but she decided against it. No one would believe her. "I'm probably just imagining things." Kuvira thought as she quietly retreated in a corner of her cell as far as her chains allowed her and sat down, waiting for anything to happen.
With the Voortrix
The Voortrix all stood in a circle, holding hands. A rainbow colored light surrounded them as they dug deep into their medallions to locate the final medallion Voortrix.
"Any luck?" Korra asked with a worried voice once the glowing stopped, and they let go of each other. Noatak and P'Li blushing a little as they held on to each other a little while longer.
"I think we found something but you're not going to like it." Femke said as she opened her eyes and looked at Korra sadly.
"It's her, isn't it? " Korra asked as she locked eyes with Femke.
"Afraid so." Femke nodded before she looked at Zaheer, who stood on crutches next to her and looked rather worried.
"What do we do now?" He asked, also knowing what this meant. Kuvira had to sit out her sentence. They didn't have the time for that.
"But she's dangerous." Wu said. "Is this a good idea?"
"Don't worry, we can keep her in check." Toph said.
"And we know a thing or two about how she works thanks to Azula." Femke added as she pointed at her.
"Looks like I was useful to your precious team after all." Azula commented with a smirk on her face
"In a way." Femke nodded, before rolling her eyes.
"You're welcome" Azula smirked.
"We have to tell her either way." Femke said.
"I don't think this is a good..." Tenzin started, but stopped when he saw how fierce Femke looked at him.
"I know you're worried, but we need her help if we want to stop Darkar." Femke almost begged.
"Can you prove it's her?" Tenzin asked with a stern look as Femke looked down before shaking her head.
"We saw her face through the medallion." She said.
"You can see through your medallion?" Wu asked.
"Sometimes with someone who also wears a Voortrix medallion." Femke answered smiling. Wu looked down, relieved.
"So it can only see whoever wears the medallion." Korra stated with a stern look. As everyone looked up at her.
"If she wears the medallion, that proves it's her." Korra explained as she headed to the door.
"That's a good idea." Femke said as she gave Korra a friendly pat on the shoulder and ran out off the room. "Come on!"
Femke's POV
"I sometimes have those." Korra said with a teasing smirk on her face. That was a first.
"So you can joke about yourself." I called back with a smirk on my face. She broke into a run with a smile.
"Dumb kids." Azula commented as she looked at us.
"Old hag."I called back when I passed by her, getting up a tree.
"Now you're just being mean." Azula snapped back after which she gave a laughing Atterita a stern look, who flinched behind Zuko.
"What did you do that for?" I snapped at Azula before turning to Atterita.
"Don't worry, she can't hurt you like she used to." I explained. Which made Atteritta peek from behind Zuko with a smile on her face.
"Really?" Atteritta asked with an excited look on her face.
"Really, Femke and I were there when Azula hunted Avatar Aang." Toph smirked.
"That must have been a great adventure." Atteritta smiled while we all got on Oogie to go to Kuvira's prison.
While we did so, I told her about the adventures of the old team Avatar. This was the first time in a very long while I freely spoke about my past. By the time I was describing the final battle I was almost in tears.
"That was so amazing." Atteritta smiled when I finished my story.
"We almost died." I nodded, smiling as I looked towards the mountain range with a dreamy look in my eyes.
"We would have never met you." Zaheer smiled as he wrapped an arm around me.
"Yeah." I commented while looking up when I suddenly saw a giant dragon in the sky.
"We got company!" I called as we all looked up in shock.
"From what?" Toph asked.
"There's a Dragon on a mountain close to us. " I told her. "We have to go help Kuvira."
"I don't see the connection." Asami said with a raised eyebrow.
"That's a creature that hunts Voortrix." I replied with a firm look as Sylvia got up and walked over to me and nodded.
"Let's transform and get it." Zaheer called as he got up as well.
"Believix Voortrix!"We all called as we all transformed into our fairy form before flying off towards the monster.
Normal POV
"Looking for something?" Femke called towards the monster while bending a rock towards it. The creature growled and looked at her, hurdling a giant rock back at them, which they could dodge in the nick off time, before the creature started to jump from rock to rock, looking for something.
"It's not here for us."Ilena, who barely managed to dodge the rock, called.
"We need to distract it." Zaheer replied with a firm look at which Toph nodded and motioned Ghazan to follow her.
"Let's make that thing eat dirt." Toph said.
"Let's." He replied as the two of them made a huge dust cloud appear that made the creature unable to use its scent. Enraged, it started to hurtle rocks at the Voortrix, who surrounded the creature.
"Zaheer! Time to try out our new powers!" Femke called, before they crossed their arms.
"Linkix voortrix!"Both of them called as a flash lit up and when it cleared, both Femke and Zaheer had a heart shaped pin and hip bag on them.
"Voortrix Combine! Heart of Light!"They called as they combined their Linx energy and blasted the thing with all they had. The monster screeched as a sign appear on it's shoulder that made all Voortrix gasp. The sign of Lord Darkar.
"So it is here for the twelfth Voortrix." P'Li called, looking up as Allerys, Master Xai Bau and Miss Tziza arrived, weapons drawn.
"Wow!" Allerys called when she looked at the monster. "That thing is BIG!"
'"And strong."Zaheer commented, dodging the monster's attack. The creature was blinded, but by listening to their voices, it could still manage to aim and even hit someone.
"We need Kuvira's help if we want to stop this thing!" Femke called as she got behind a rock and looked up at the sky were Oogie was still flying around.
'We have to reach Kuvira.' Shot through Femke's head as she scanned the area, smirking when she saw a giant of a rock hanging above a cliff. 'That might slow it down.' She smirked as she flew over to Zaheer, tapping his shoulder before pointing to the rock.
"Good idea." Zaheer nodded.
"Follow me!"Femke called while waving her hand at the others, who flew after Femke, luring the monster by making as much noise as they could. They flew through the canyon quickly, before landing on the floor behind the rock.
"Wait for my signal." Femke whispered. The entire team nodded and got behind her… backing under the rock as the monster closed in on them, growling as it started to make a noise like a vacuum. All Voortrix suddenly started to feel very weak.
"What is it doing?" Noatak asked while changing back to his human form.
"I don't know but it's not good." Femke groaned in reply. P'li was supporting her. Zaheer was leaning on Xai Bau and didn't look to good either.
"We have to take it out." Allerys said from above.
"I'm not getting over there." Wu said from behind a rock where he and some others were hiding.
"We need to get it under that rock."Femke called with worry.
"Can you walk?" Korra asked as she firebended at the monster in order to get to Femke's side.
"Barely. That monster is draining our powers." Femke groaned. Korra put her shoulder under Femke's.
"You think you can bend?" Korra asked Femke as they moved towards the rock and the monster while master Xai Bau, Tziza and the others who were unaffected by the monster helped the other Voortrix get away.
"Get ready to move out fast." Femke smirked as she pointed up at the rock.
"Got it." Korra nodded firmly as both girls got ready. The monster growled as it closed in on the Voortrix, unaware of the rock.
"Now!"Femke yelled, as she and P'li combustion bended at the loose rock while Ghazan and Toph earthbended the rubble to make sure it would fall on the monster.
"And done." Femke sighed, looking up at Korra.
"That was amazing!"Atteritta called coming out of hiding.
"Glad you enjoyed it, but we have to make sure Kuvira is okay." Femke replied, dusting herself off before she started to walk towards Oogie.
"You okay, buddy?" Femke asked the bison with a small smile as she patted him on the nose, making Oogie growl before licking Femke over her face.
"That's a Yes." Ghazan smirked as he walked by Femke and earthbended himself on the bison.
"This monster is a serious threat. How are we going to take it down if our powers aren't even able to scratch it?" P'Li wondered out loud.
"Haven't the rocks might have crushed it?" Atteritta asked nervously.
"I wish it had but I don't think this was enough." Femke replied with a sad look.
"We need a plan to take it out." Noatak pondered as he made the shape off the creature in the small layer off dust that lied on the saddle. "It must have a weak point."
"We could… " Femke started, but stopped mid sentence. The others would never allow that. "Never mind."
"We could do what?" Noatak asked. "Just speak up."
"Well… " Femke looked away ashamed. Why did she even think like that?
"Hey, you're running with criminals and murderers, don't feel too bad." Came from Zaheer who wrapped an arm around her. "Drastic times, drastic measures."
"He's right. Just tell us our plan." Tarrlok assured her with a smile on his face.
"Were all friends here." Allerys smiled as she nodded firmly, making Femke smile and take a deep breath.
"Remember during our final escape, Tarrlok and I managed to hit you on your weak point?" Femke asked Noatak, who nodded. "That wasn't accidental. I managed to find your weak spot thanks to blood bending." Femke explained while looking down at Tarrlok nodded.
"You want to use it again?" Korra asked as Femke looked down and nodded.
"You know, blood bending is illegal." Tenzin remarked with a raised eyebrow.
"It might be the only way to take it out." Femke said with a stern look.
"It might work." Ilene smiled as Selvia nodded.
"I'm in." Xai Bau nodded.
"It's probably our best bet." Tziza nodded.
"We'll need to get close to the monster to make this work." Noatak brought up.
"We can you air cover from Oogie's back as you and Femke get close to the monster." P'Li offered before getting on top of the Bison's back with air bending.
"How many of you can airbend?" Korra asked as P'Li, Femke, Ming Hua and Noatak all raised their hands.
"Seems like a lot off you already have a second element." Asami smiled.
"Toph gained fire bending when fighting the Fire Nation. After the loss off his water bending, Tarrlok picked up earth bending fast. Zaheer got his fire bending during a fight with the White Lotus. P'Li got her air bending on the way to save Ming. Ming Hua got her air bending mid fight with her parents and Noatak got his air bending during practice." Femke summed up with a smile on her face as she remembered how each of her friends gained their second element.
"I'm lagging behind." Ghazan said, shaking his head sadly.
"Not anymore, now that we found the twelfth Voortrix" Femke smiled.
"Seeing how talented she is, that will only be a matter of time." Ghazan said
"Who knows?" Femke smirked back as the group entered the prison facility together. All this time, Zaheer stood very close to Femke. She could feel him shiver.
"It's okay, we're not here because you were arrested." Femke whispered as she gave his hand a comforting squeeze as Zaheer smiled at her.
"Thankfully." He whispered back.
"We're here." The White Lotus guard announced when the elevator had hit the bottom floor, stepping out and pointing at the double wall that had two White Lotus guards on each side.
"Step towards the wall." One of them said after they bent open the first door. Femke nodded and stepped towards the wall first, followed by the rest. Zaheer came in last, still nervous. Femke gently wrapped an arm around him.
"Never had that many visitors before." Kuvira smirked as she looked up from where she was sitting. "You want something, Korra?"
"Yes." Korra replied before looking at Femke, who gulped before she took a step forward.
"This is going to sound crazy but I'm a fairy from another dimension." Femke started, smiling a little at her friends, who nodded. "I'm on a mission to bring the Voortrix back together that were destroyed three thousand years ago."
"What do I have to do with that?" Kuvira asked rolling her eyes.
"We think you're one of us." Femke said while showing her Voortrix Medallion to Kuvira, who looked at it with widened eyes before she reached for her own Medallion.
"I just taught it was a pretty bauble." Kuvira said as she looked at it.
"I think there was another reason you picked it up." Femke looked into Kuvira's eyes deeply. "It called to you."
"You think I'm one of your delusions?" Kuvira asked.
"They're very real." Femke stated calmly as she pointed to her friends. "We all have been training and getting ready to take on the evil Lord Darkar."
"We changed a lot." Ghazan piped. "Which wasn't easy, but we managed."
"They're serious about this." Ran through Kuvira's head as she kept staring into Femke's eyes, gasping when, in a flash, she saw a young girl in a yellow shirt and skirt with wings on her back and a long ponytail covering one side off her face.
Kuvira's POV
"They're serious about this." Ran through my head as I kept staring into Femke's eyes, gasping when all off a sudden I saw a young girl in a yellow shirt and skirt with wings on her back who had a long ponytail covering one side off her face. I recognized her from my nightmares.
"You?!"I gasped, backing away. I didn't understand. Why was I seeing this? Why was I feeling this?
"I'm Feria, Kiara." Femke said as she held out a hand towards me. "I know we messed up last time, which cost us Voorfield, but we're back now to set things right."
"Kiara?" A small voice called from behind Femke's back. Before I knew it I was lying on the ground with a small creature sitting on my chest. "Kiara! It has been so long!" I looked at the creature with widened eyes. She had a pink hair and was covered with yellow and purple punk like clothing and sharp ears.
"Saviria! I told you to stay in the bag!"Femke called out to the creature, who looked up with a sheepish smirk.
"Sorry! I couldn't help myself." The creature smiled up at me. "I missed Kiara so much."
"You missed me?" I asked with a shocked look. No one except Su had ever said they missed me.
"I was so worried when you weren't there when I arrived." She said as my mind flashed back to an old photo of the girl with the hair covering part off her face along with a group off other winged beings.
'Where have I seen that before?' I thought as I looked at the little creature in my lap with a small smile. It was kinda cute and to travel around trying to bring peace and order? That was all I wanted when I left Zhaofu all those years ago. My thoughts were cut short by a loud rumbling sound as the room started to collapse.
"We have to get out off here!"Bolin called as Femke cut my chains with a lava star. We all went through the double door and followed the White Lotus outside, where I saw a three feet tall monster sitting on top of the mountain my cell was in.
"We have to get it off there!" Korra called.
"How? If we get too close, it will drain our powers." Zaheer said as he looked at the monster with wide eyes.
"Let's try Femke's plan!"P'Li called as she grabbed the other combustion bender by hand as the two of them got on Oogie, circling above the creature while blasting it with their combustion bending.
"Now!"Femke called as Noatak nodded and both used their blood bending at the creature. The creature growled in pain as they managed to hold it down while searching for its weak point.
"The neck!" Femke called after a short while.
"Got it!"P'Li called back as the two combustion benders took aim.
'Let's help them." Femke smirked at Noatak, who nodded in return before the two of them blood bent the face off the creature upwards after which Atteritta and P'Li combustion bent at each side off the jaw, causing the creature to explode.
"We did it!"Femke cheered as she hugged Noatak, while P'Li and her aunt did the same.
"That was explosive!"Bolin shouted.
"That's the best you could come up with?" Mako asked with a smile. I looked at them celebrating with a sad look. Now what? Would that mean I had to go back to jail? Even if I was part of this 'Voortrix' group, they wouldn't accept me.
"Trust your heart, Kuvira. You're a Voortrix. If you let them in they will show you the way." A voice in my head called, making me snap up my head only to look straight in Femke's eyes.
"You are okay, Kuvira?" She asked me with a worried voice.
"I was just thinking… " I replied, not wanting to tell her about the voices in my head.
"It almost looked like you were hearing things." Femke smiled. How did she know?
"That's your past life trying to call you." She said.
"Past life?" I asked with a raised eyebrow. "The Avatar is the only one with past lives right?"
"We're not from this world. Not originally anyway. Three thousand years ago we were born on Voorfield before the big catastrophe, when Darkar wiped it off the map." Femke told as images shoot through my head. Images of a Village in flames. A knight laughing as people fled while ten beings with wings tried to fight him off.
"What's going on? Why am I seeing these things?" Ran through my head as I looked at Femke, then at Zaheer, who was standing next to her and was smiling as she told her story. I didn't believe it. It couldn't be true.
'How would you explain the monster?' A kind voice asked me. 'And these little creatures?'
"Spirits. There must be a spirit portal nearby." I shot back.
'You know Spirits aren't like this.'
"Just who are you?" I wanted to know now.
'I am you from three thousand years ago.' The voice replied before a woman who looked a lot like me appeared before me. The only difference was her eyes were hazel while mine were green.
"We do look an awful lot alike." I looked at the woman before me.
'You were eighteen when you died last time.' She replied with a sad look. "I'm Kiara."
"My name is Kuvira but I guess you already knew that." I answered.
"It's great to finally meet you in person." Kiara smiled while holding out her hand for me.
"You've been watching me?" I asked, a little nervous. Because that meant she saw what I did to the Earth Kingdom. To my family. My love…
'I also watched you as the Great Uniter. You did a lot of wrong, trying to do right.' Kiara smiled a little. 'Everything is as it should be.'
"Was my parents abandoning me part of how it should be?" I asked looking at her angrily.
'It had to happen for the Voortrix to cross paths.' Kiara replied with a sad look.
"Screw that! I don't want anything to do with people that think that is okay."I raged.
'I know.' Kiara looked down as she said this. 'I also know you were taken in by Suyin Beifong and were raised as her own child.' Images of a younger me showed up, happily sitting by the fire amongst the Beifong children while Su was reading to us from a storybook.
'They always considered you one of them.' Kiara's voice called in the distance as the images changed;
The bedroom off the twins. We were all sitting around, talking before bethtime when suddenly a pillow flew my way.
"Beifong pillow fight!" Wei called out as the two brothers started to trash pillows at me.
"I'm not even a Beifong, why are you hitting me?" My younger self wanted to know.
"You're our sister either way." Wei said.
"We'll always have your back Kuvira." Baatar smiled as he wrapped his arms around me with a big smile. At that moment I believed him. Up until the moment where I decided I would go to Ba Sing Se with Baatar to bring order.
'Yet you helped shape the world.' Kiara told me with a small smile on her face. "Both positively and negatively."
"Negatively, mostly." I thought back bitterly.
'Mistakes can be learned from.' Kiara told me sternly. With that she disappeared, as a shudder went down my spine. I quickly turned around and saw how a creature with wings and red stripes on his face shot a blast off light at us.
"Watch out!"I called as I moved in as quickly as possible and spread my arms to cover them, looking up strangely as a shining barrier surrounded me.
"What?" I gasped as I looked at the barrier with wide eyes.
"Knock that off!"Ghazan called as he stood next to me and used his own shield to help me guard the rest of the team.
"Is that what I think it is?" P'Li asked with a shaky voice, looking at Femke.
"I'm afraid so." She replied solemnly.
"What are we going to do?" Atteritta asked as she looked at her with big frightened eyes.
"I don't know." P'Li said as she looked at the monster re-appear along with two human shaped creatures with wings that at us with menace. "This fight isn't over yet."

And with that cliffhanger I'll end the story! I hope you all liked it.
Sorry it took me a while to write this chapter, but I had very little inspiration to write on this story the past fee weeks. I've been writing on 'Daughter of the Techno Union' instead. Be sure to check that out.
