Sierra Steinfield fiddled with the keys as she tried to open a cell door. The old barn was falling apart and the crude smells drove her to work faster. Time was not on her side. The rusty cage door squeaked loudly as it opened and Sierra cringed. She heard a small whimper and through the darkness she saw a small child cowering in the corner.

"It's okay, Lynn," Sierra said softly. "I'm a Pokemon Ranger. I'm here to rescue you." Hope glistened in the young girl's eyes as Sierra pulled the ten year old to her feet.

They quickly walked to the front of the barn and Sierra glanced out into the darkness. So far no one had noticed them. She whispered to the girl. "Time to go. Hold on to me and don't look back." Lynn squeezed Sierra's hand tighter and they started out as the night sky slowly brightened.

Further and further they fled through the pasture of dry grass. Sierra's brown ponytail swished and her white and red shoes pounded on the hard ground as the young girl desperately tried to keep up. Sierra's red jacket flapped behind her and her Capture Stylus was tied securely to her belt.

A long howl and shouts made Sierra glance fearfully behind her. She squinted her eyes as a spotlight shone toward them and Sierra knew that the kidnappers' two houndoom would not be far behind. At this rate they would be caught within moments.

"Faster, Lynn! Don't look back!" Sierra panted as she put on more speed. She knew that the young girl must have been exhausted but the fear of their pursuers spurred those little feet into going faster. In the back of her mind, Sierra knew they wouldn't be able keep up this pace for long. They just needed to outrun Lynn's captors until help arrived.

One of the houndoom jumped and snapped at Sierra's feet but an Eevee flew out of nowhere and smashed into the houndoom's side causing it to trip and hit the hard dirt. Sierra nodded her appreciation to her partner and the Eevee yipped with acknowledgement.

The second houndoom howled in anger and opened its jaws wide letting out a blast of fire toward the fleeing escapees.

Sierra heard the incoming flamethrower attack and grabbed Lynn's hand, dragging her out of its way. She felt the heat singe her ranger uniform but the small amount of firelight began to grow brighter. Sneaking another glance behind her, Sierra saw that the dry grass had caught on fire and was stopping their pursuers right in their tracks. Sierra allowed herself to grin, maybe they would be able to get out of this after all. But her joy was short lived as the wildfire began to spread remarkably fast over the dry field. She realized that they had to keep going or else they would be caught in the deadly flames.

Looking ahead, Sierra noticed a shift in the foliage, it was a mud puddle. "There! Get to the mud!" Without grass to burn they would be safer there. The three of them reached the dirt area just as the fire completely surrounded them and Lynn quickly sank to her knees in exhaustion. They were trapped.

"Tappy! Help us out!" Sierra cried as she threw a pokeball into the air. A Togekiss suddenly appeared, almost invisible through the increasing smoke. "Use Gust!" The pokemon flapped its wings strongly and clean air filled their lungs. Tappy then landed gently on the muddy ground.

"Lynn," Sierra said as she knelt down in front of her. "Tappy will fly you to safety."

Lynns eyes widened, "But what about you? Aren't you coming with me?" Her little voice peeped with fear.

Sierra shook her head. "My Togekiss is too small to fly us both out of here at the same time, but it will get you out of here and then come back for me." She saw Lynn's eyes start to tear up. "I need you to be brave. Can you do that for me?" The little ten year old nodded. "Good." Sierra quickly lifted her up onto the Togekiss' back and turned her attention to the pokemon. "Tappy, you know what to do. Don't let me down." She patted the pokemon and then watched as they disappeared into the rising smoke.

Sierra's throat began to burn and her eyes stung as the smoke surged from the growing flames. She took off her Ranger jacket and held it up to her face for protection but hesitated looking closely at the red and gold fabric. It had always been a symbol of her service and sacrifice but where she was going, she would hardly ever be able to wear it. A paw scratched her ankle and Sierra peered down at the Eevee on the ground. He knew what they were doing; and he was sad, but she saw determination in his eyes. They both knew that it was the only way.

Sierra turned back toward the wildfire and threw the jacket into the flames. She was leaving this life behind and starting anew with her partner and best friend, Eevee.

The heat was becoming unbearable and Sierra turned her eyes skyward looking at the smoke, wondering when her ride would appear. But nothing was happening, no one was appearing. Where was that pokemon? The flames were getting ever closer and at this rate they would be gone in a few minutes.

A sudden shadow appeared out of the flames and Sierra could have cried for joy as the Hydreigon arrived to take her away. Wasting no time, she and her eevee hopped on it's back and flew out of reach of the deadly flames. She happily breathed in the fresh air.

As they rose higher and sped away from the rising smoke, Sierra felt a great weight settle on her shoulders. The hunted would now become the hunter and Team Galaxy had better watch out.

Four years later…

Pokemon Ranger Ringer walked down the hall of Ranger Headquarters. Her black shirt was tucked neatly into her knee-long, grey shorts and her layered, sandy-blond hair was held back by a thick red headband. Her green eyes were hard after years of unsuccessful work, but there was a light in them as hope was once again in sight.

Paddling right alongside Ringer was her best friend and partner, Ray. He was a powerful Umbreon and one of the few who truly understood her. They never went anywhere without each other.

After being on call to the International Police, Ringer had been summoned back to these halls with the news that the Rangers had uncovered something that could be of help to her cause.

The sound of footsteps alerted Ringer to a man walking toward her. She lifted her eyes to his face and breathed a sigh of relief. She didn't know him and almost immediately she began to analyze him without realizing it. He was a large man and was strutting with his head held high. His eyes were full of tenacity and a large, stupid grin played on his face. Clearly this man was full of himself.

She nodded politely as the man passed her but he seemed to ignore her. Apparently he was too caught up in his own thoughts to pay any attention at all.

Ringer stared at the large man as he continued down the hall, and her stomach churned. Hopefully she would never have to work with someone like that. She glanced down at Ray. He shrugged it off and she followed him as they reached the very door the man had come out of. Ringer knocked loudly and it was almost immediately opened by the Director's secretary.

"Ranger Ringer," the young lady said. "Director Opal has been expecting you." She led Ringer by her desk and through another set of doors into the Director's office. The secretary closed the doors behind her.

The office was bright as the blinds were open and Ringer found herself standing in front of Director Opal; the head commander of the Pokemon Ranger organization in the Sylva region. She sat at her desk and was looking over a file. Her young face was highlighted by her chocolate colored hair. Her bright green eyes narrowed in concentration. Floating just behind her was her pokemon partner, hydreigon. She looked up as Ringer walked into the room and her face immediately brightened.

"Ringer!" She exclaimed. "Thank goodness you were able to make it. We've got a situation that I believe you'd want to be in on."

Ringer nodded for the Director to continue as she sat down in one of the chairs in front of the desk.

"Just an hour ago we got an urgent anonymous message from someone up in the Northern Mountains. They mentioned a family of Articuno that lived on one of those snowy peaks. They also said something about Team Galaxy planning on capturing them."

"What?!" Ringer reeled back in surprise. This wasn't ordinary. Why would Team Galaxy take such a drastic action? "Are you sure that Team Galaxy is a part of this?" Ringer asked.

Director Opal shook her head sadly. "No. Our long-distance communication has been having problems lately. We could barely hear the person's voice and didn't catch a lot of what they said. We lost contact within minutes."

Ringer put her hand up to her mouth in thought. "So you want me to travel up there and see if Team Galaxy is going after the legendary birds. Is that it?"

"Yes and no. I plan on sending a small group of Rangers up there and I want you to be a part of it." Director Opal explained. "You are to make sure that Team Galaxy isn't making a move up in our northern wilderness and to see that those Articuno are safe."

Ringer nodded. "Am I to take lead on this mission?"

"No, I have another Ranger taking lead. He may not have the same experiences with Team Galaxy as you but I believe this will be a good learning opportunity for him. He needs to listen to the advice of others and I expect you to teach him that vital lesson."

Ringer was silent. She didn't know what to think. Director Opal wanted her to go on this mission and advise a guy on how to lead? With a newbie leader on an important mission like this? She didn't want to think of the countless things that could go wrong and whether the rumors were true or not, Ringer could not afford to lose another lead on Team Galaxy.

"Ringer, he just needs a gentle nudge in the right direction." Chief Opal said, seeming to know exactly what Ringer was thinking. "Don't worry, with you on this mission I know you will succeed. Just give him a chance."

Ringer sighed in annoyance. "Fine. I'll do it."

"Great! You'll meet with your teammates in—" She checked her clock. "One hour. You might want to get ready for the cold. It may be late spring here, but up in those mountains there might still be snow. Good luck, Ranger!"

"Right." Ringer had to fight to not roll her eyes as she left the director's room to go prepare.

Less than an hour later, Ringer was walking onto a helicopter pad toward the airship designated to take them to the Northern Mountains. She wore a navy blue overcoat and a backpack filled with a bunch of hiking gear. They would probably be hiking all over those peaks and Ringer wanted to be prepared for anything. She noticed three other people who were standing next to the aircraft. By their red jackets, Ringer guessed that they were Pokemon Rangers waiting for the final member of their team.

Director Opal suddenly appeared right alongside Ringer. "Are you nervous?" asked. Ringer knew she was referring to the fact that it had been over four years since she had officially been on a Ranger mission. Missions with the International Police weren't that different but they usually included arresting someone or scouting out possible villain hideouts within the large cities. A Ranger's job was to do the same for small towns and watch over both the pokemon and people of the wilderness.

"It shouldn't be that much different from a mission with the IP." Ringer assured the Director.

Opal nodded and as they met up with the other three Rangers, she quickly introduced Ringer to the rest of the team; Dylan Bates, the geographer; Janette Davis, the medical expert; Pathos, their pilot with all of his techno-gear; and finally their leader, Ranger Daniel Grey.

To Ringer's shock, Grey was the very person she had seen just outside of Director Opal's office when she had first arrived. Still standing proudly, he looked to be about five eleven and it was obvious that all of his muscular weight came from constant workouts. He had only his red, short-sleeved Ranger jacket.

Ranger Bates was a skinny man whose head was at least three inches taller than anyone else and wore a thick overcoat that made him look like a burnt marshmallow. In his pockets Ringer could make out a bunch of rolled up maps.

Ranger Davis had the biggest bag of all. It looked to be twice the short woman's weight. Ringer wondered how she was able to carry it all. She asked what was in it and Davis' gladly told her. "Most of it is medical supplies." She said. "Can't have too much when we are going to the wild mountains, am I right?"

Ringer nodded and then noticed Grey looking her up and down.

"So," he said. "You're the third lucky ranger who gets to be a part of this mission," He paused. "I've never seen you around. You a greenie?"

Ringer was too shocked to speak. Usually a leader was required to know the basics of his teammates' backgrounds and their skills before the mission. That way he could better lead them through any situation that popped up. Hadn't this Ranger done his homework? Before Ringer could point this out, Director Opal stepped in.

"Ranger Ringer has been away working with the International Police and learning all she can about Team Galaxy," Opal explained. "So, if you happen to encounter any Grunts from Team Galaxy she will be there to give you guys advice."

Grey smirked, "That's good to know. Well, come on, then!" He said to his team. "Let's get this show on the road." He hopped into the airship as the pilot started it up and Ringer just stared at him dumbfoundedly.

How could he act that way? And in front of the Director, no less? She glanced at Opal but she simply shrugged in return. This was not going to be an easy mission, and not because of the task at hand.

Ringer took a calming breath and stepped into the helicopter after the other two Rangers. The only open seat was right next to Ranger Grey and Ringer grudgingly sat down, strapping herself in. Grey immediately began telling a story about one of his latest successful missions. Ringer bit back a retort and leaned against the window, sighing. She could already tell that the arrogant jerk would be a large thorn in her side. How was she going to survive this mission?

The helicopter's blades turned faster and Ringer saw Director Opal wave as they began their ascent and headed north-west. Anada city was quickly left behind and pretty soon the Northern Mountain Range began crawling over the horizon.

Ranger Bates inched away from the window. "I will be honest," He said over the coms. "I'm afraid of flying."

Ranger Davis looked at him like he was crazy. "How can you be afraid of flying?"

Pathos' voice joined in. "Well, don't you worry," He said in a southern drawl. "You're in the best of hands. This hunk of junk won't fall out of the sky on my watch."

"Please, don't call it that." Bates said in a squeaky voice. "You're not helping my confidence."

Everyone laughed except for Ringer. She disapproved that they weren't focusing on the mission ahead. She knew it would be at least an hour before they reached their destination and she busied herself with going through the file to make sure she knew exactly what their mission entailed. She pulled the file out of her pack and began reading.

According to the report, the call between the Rangers and the anonymous person only lasted a minute and there weren't a lot of details. Team Galaxy was after the two Legendary Articuno that lived on one of the steep cliffs of a peak that was called Adapt Mountain. Because of a steep cliff, they were going to hike up the backside of the mountain and check on the Articuno from above. If all went well, they would see the two Articuno safe and sound. If not then they would have to rappel down and somehow figure out a way to save them.

Ringer flipped the page to learn more about the Legendary Pokemon. Apparently, there had been many stories where an aircraft flew too close and the Articuno used their great power to create large snow storms. Everyone knew that Legendary Pokemon were not to be trifled with. Their raw power was too much for any one trainer, but not for the Pokemon Rangers who were specially trained.

What bothered Ringer was that Adapt Mountain was really close to Kalan Peak, the largest mountain in the entire range. She wondered why the Articuno didn't live there. It was taller and held more cliffs, making it safer for the bird pokemon. Not to mention that the snow never melted on those high slopes; it was a perfect habitat for the ice type.

About an hour passed and the pilot warned them of their landing within a large clearing near the foot of the designated mountain. "We don't want to risk getting the legendary pokemon angry or frightened, or we'll all be buried in three feet of snow before this is all over." the pilot stated in his southern accent. The helicopter slowed down and Ringer felt the bump as it settled itself on the grassy ground.

Ranger Grey was the first one out of his seat and, as the helicopter's engines turned off, he called out orders. "Our mission is to find and protect the two Articuno that are said to live around this mountain. Our pilot will stay in this clearing. So, if anything happens where someone is unable to continue the mission then you are to report back to this aircraft. Is that clear?"

Everyone sounded off on the coms as they agreed and they all filed out of the helicopter. Grey immediately began treading through the undergrowth and Ringer raced after him.

"Hey, Grey," Ringer said as she caught up to him. "Shouldn't we go and locate the person who called this in?"

Grey took a deep breath in annoyance. "If you want to go look for them, then be my guest. But our mission is to make sure that the Articuno are safe and, every moment we waste, we are letting those pokemon down." He turned away and motioned for the others to start their trek up the mountain.

Ringer's blood began to boil. Of course she knew that the timer was ticking, but making sure of their mission was just as important as speed in this race. She ground her teeth, knowing that it wouldn't be right for her to go off on her own. She would have to stay with the group and try to 'help' when her guidance was clearly not wanted.

"Ray," Ringer said looking down at her Umbreon. "Let's just finish this mission." She waved at the pilot and then they ran after their fellow Rangers.

The trek was steep and soon the forest floor was covered with pine needles as the deciduous trees became simple Spruce and Pine. Pokemon played in the leafy cover and Ringer found joy in the beauty and wonder of spring time. Ringer was soon breathing hard as the slope tilted upward, reminding Ringer that they weren't on a trail. "Ranger Bates, is there no path to the top of this mountain?" Ringer panted.

Ranger Bates took out one of his maps and nodded confidently. "I'm sure. If there was a trail, it would be on my map."

Grey turned briefly. "Don't worry, I'll get us there." He grumbled. The group continued up and pretty soon the trees began to thin out. The slope suddenly became a field littered with boulders and pebbles of every size and just a few feet from their left was a cliff. The distant roar of a waterfall told them that a stream was somewhere nearby.

Ranger Bates took a breath. "This place is too rocky. The scattered grasses don't look like they have a good grip in the earth. This place would seem to be prone to landslides. I suggest we find another way before we start one."

Grey smirked. "Nothing bad is going to happen." He assured them. He leaped onto a large rock and looked down on the others. "See? It's perfectly safe! At this rate, we'll be at the top in no time!" He jumped off the other side.

Ringer's concern heightened. So far Grey ignored protocol and had been doing everything his way instead of relying on the others' specialty. She sighed as she remembered she was the one supposed to have been giving him leadership advice. Ringer turned to the others. "Bates and Davis. I'm going to try talking him out of this idea. You guys should stay here." They readily agreed and Ringer and Ray pursued their leader over the rocky terrain. "Ranger Grey!"

He sighed exasperatedly as he stopped. "Now what, Ringer?"

"Grey, you need to start acting like a better leader," She whispered. "You are ignoring the advice of others and putting us into dangerous situations. You need to rethink where we are going." She grabbed his shoulder. "I agree with Bates, we should go find another way."

Grey shrugged out of her grip and continued on the next rock which wobbled precariously at his weight. "I know what I'm doing. Don't undermine my authority; I'm the leader here, not you." He jumped off the rock and Ringer had no choice but to continue following him.

"Please," said Ringer as she jumped softly onto the boulder. "Let's go ba—" Ray leaped onto the rock unbalancing it and sending them sliding down the slope and over the edge of the cliff. Ringer's scream was drowned out by the roar of pebbles as Ringer and Ray tumbled into the open air.

She glanced down to see the long fall. The giant rocks fell faster than Ringer did and splashed right into the pool of water right below them. Ringer hoped that it was deep enough to catch them. She closed her eyes just before impact. Splash!

Ringer landed in the chilled water and without warning, her right leg smashed against the lakebottom. Pain rippled through her and she gasped for air but found none. She attempted to swim but her heavy backpack only served to drag her down further into the swirling depths. Finally slipping out of the straps, Ringer felt herself start to drift upward. But it wasn't fast enough, her lungs burned from lack of air and her vision started to go fuzzy.

She hazily felt a pair of teeth bite into her jacket and start pulling her upward. She broke the surface and Ringer gasped for air as coughs racked her entire body. Ringer knew who had saved her; it was Ray and he was towing her toward the sandy beach.

Ringer layed there, on the sand, too exhausted to move and grimacing at the pain in her leg. When she finished supplying herself with precious air she looked over to see Ray panting from the effort. He looked terrified but relieved that he had not lost his best friend. Ringer smiled slightly. "Don't worry, Ray. I'm still alive. I have you to thank for that."

Ringer slowly got up the strength and inched away from the swirling water and onto the grass. Her right ankle burned in agony and Ringer grimaced as she rolled down her knee-high sock to see what had happened. Her ankle was already swelling and turning an angry red. She must have sprained it really badly.

Ray whimpered and he lowered his head. Ringer knew exactly what the Umbreon was thinking. He felt guilty for making the rock tip in the first place. She reached over to pet his head. "It's not your fault. That rock could have slipped at any time." She comforted him.

She looked up at the cliff in front of her, a few scattered pebbles were still splashing into the water. "We should probably send a message to the others and tell them that we are okay." She reached for her Pokegear only to realize that she had put it in her backpack and was probably flowing somewhere downstream by now.

Thinking quickly, Ringer took off her red headband and tied the fabric in a certain knot. All Rangers were required to have a red-band on them just in case of emergency. Tying different knots in the fabric meant different things so they could use them to send messages. Ringer only needed a way to get her headband up to the others.

She reached to the back of her belt and brought out a pokeball. "Valor, come on out!" A small rufflet flew into the air and landed on the ground in front of her. She gave it her knotted headband. "Can you take this to the others at the top of the cliff?" She asked. The pokemon nodded and took off, flying higher and higher until it reached the crest of the cliff and disappeared.

Without the headband, her hair slopped over her face and Ringer shivered. The cliff's shadow chilled her to the bone. She needed to get someplace to dry off and take a better look at her ankle. She dared not take off her shoe just yet. She and Ray had no choice but to head back to the helicopter.

Ringer knew that she was on her own. But she had her pokemon with her and together they would get out of this situation. They had been through much worse before. She reached for a different pokeball. "Maple! I need your assistance!" The pokeball opened and out came a Sawsbuck. Already knowing what Ringer wanted it to do, it stooped down and helped the ranger climb onto its back.

A screech alerted Ringer to Valor flying back down with her headband tied in a different knot. She grabbed it out of Valor's talons and returned the small Rufflet to its pokeball. The knot in her headband was clear.

We'll take care of this.

Ringer knew that the others would be finding another way up the mountain and leaving her to go back to the helicopter. She knew that would be the decision but getting the message hurt more than she realized. She had waited for this mission for over four years. It was her chance at getting back at Team Galaxy. She took a deep breath and refused the tears that threatened. There was nothing she could do. She would have to sit this mission out.

"Ray, can you sniff out the way back to the helicopter?" Ringer asked. The Umbreon yipped in reply, eager to help his trainer. They cantered deeper into the woods.

The trees creaked in the slight breeze and everything was oddly quiet as if the wild pokemon could sense something Ringer could not.

Ringer's progress down the mountain was slow as every so often Ray would change directions to avoid possible dangers.

They were almost to the helicopter when a strong gust of wind suddenly flew through the trees and Ringer glanced up as dark clouds form rapidly above them. A deep breath and Ringer smelled the slight ting of rain in the wind. If the others weren't careful then they would all be stuck in the middle of a snowstorm. Ringer was grateful that the sun had already dried off her clothes.

Ray's ears suddenly perked up. He yipped at Ringer and pointed his nose toward the direction.

As they drew closer Ringer began to hear sobbing; someone was crying. Ringer saw someone just beyond the bushes and realized that it was a young woman comforting a girl who couldn't have been more than fourteen years old.

Ringer could barely make out the child's words through her sobs. "I'm too late!" She cried, "They've already left up the mountain!" The young teenager's light yellow shirt clashed with the purple camera hanging around her neck. Her freckled face was highlighted by her strawberry blond bangs that fell out of her messy bun.

"Don't worry. When my other pokemon come back, we'll go after them." The older girl said. She wore blue jeans and her sky blue shirt was hidden by her grey jacket. Her dark brown hair fell down almost to her waist.

Her posture made Ringer realize that something was not not right. Ringer spurred Maple into the clearing, hoping for answers. But when the little girl saw her, she cried out in alarm.

The young woman twirled around to face the new threat, her Espeon growling menacingly. "Who are you?!" She demanded. "Why are you trying to kidnap this young girl!?!"

Ray awaited for Ringer's command to retaliate but Ringer held up her hands in surrender. "Hold on! What are you talking about? Why would you think I'm going after this young girl? I've never seen her before in my life!"

"Then who are you, really?" The older girl asked, still not letting her guard down.

Ringer was about to tell them that she was a Ranger, but a thought popped into her head and made her hesitate. Anyone around here could be a part of Team Galaxy, even these unlikely two girls. It was better to play it safe.

"My name is Ringer and this is Ray. We are traveling around these parts, but we have gotten separated from the rest of our friends."

"Likely story! Get off your sawsbuck or my Espeon will force you to the ground." She threatened.

Ringer knew that Ray would stop the Espeon long before it reached her but she didn't want to pose a threat. She was looking for answers and to get them she needed a bit of trust. Ringer slowly slid off Maple's back and her right ankle collapsed beneath her weight. She leaned heavily on Maple and grimaced in pain.

"Are you okay?" The younger girl asked. "What happened?"

"Yeah. I'm okay," Ringer clenched her teeth. "We took a tumble earlier and I lost my stuff falling into a stream. But thankfully none of my pokemon were hurt." She paused. "I've told you my name. What's yours?" Ringer calmly reminded them.

"Oh, that's right," The older girl said. "I am Avia. I'm training to become a Sky Master. This is Lynn. We just met about fifteen minutes ago, ourselves. I'm sorry I almost attacked you. But Lynn needs to be protected."

Lynn. The name reverberated around Ringer's head as lost memories tried to surface. Why did that name cause Deja vu? Ringer shook off the thoughts as Lynn started to speak.

"Have you seen any Pokemon Rangers around here?" Her teary eyes were full of hope.

Ringer hesitated. "I saw some people heading up Adapt Mountain, but I couldn't tell if they were Rangers or not.

Lynn turned to Avia. "Oh! We'll never be able to stop them now!"

"What?" Ringer was puzzled. "Why would you want to stop them?"

Lynn looked away and Avia started telling the story for her. "Lynn came to this place to take pictures of the changing seasons. But when she accidentally came across a camp of a group called Team Galaxy, she overheard them talking about doing evil things."

Ringer's heart pounded in her chest. Avia was telling her proof that Team Galaxy really was around here and they were planning something. This was the closest Ringer had been to Team Galaxy in all the years since she faked her death. "What exactly did you hear?" Ringer asked.

Lynn sniffled and wiped her nose as she continued the story. "Well, to be honest I didn't know they were bad guys in the first place," She admitted. "I just found a large encampment and heard them talking about Articuno. Since I came here to take pictures I was immediately interested. But as I sat there I heard them say horrible stuff. They were going to capture the Legendary Pokemon for some sort of experiment."

"Experiment?!" Ringer exclaimed. "What kind of experiment?"

"I don't know," Lynn replied. "I didn't want to stick around any longer. But they must have heard me because they captured me and took away my pokemon. They forced me to send a message to the Pokemon Rangers. I told them to go protect the Articuno that live on top of Adapt Mountain from Team Galaxy. But that's the problem. The Articuno don't live on Adapt Mountain." Lynn revealed. "They live on the slopes of Kalan Peak."

That got Avia's attention. "So that's why you're so worried about the Rangers! They are headed right into a trap!"

When the word trap was said, Ringer reeled back in surprise. Team Galaxy had set up a trap for the Rangers! But why? After hiding for over four years why would they openly reveal themselves like that? Ringer shook her head. She had more important problems. Ranger Bates, and Davis, and even the hotheaded Ranger Grey, were all in danger! Ringer struggled to calm herself and listen to the rest of Lynn's story.

"After I sent the message, I was able to escape when they weren't looking." Lynn continued. "But I wasn't able to get my Togekiss back. I had to leave it behind." She looked down in shame as more tears welled up.

Avia knelt down to comfort her. "It's okay, Lynn," She said. "It's okay to be scared."

Lynn sniffled loudly and she looked up at them. "No, it's not." She stated softly. Lynn suddenly stood up on her feet, determination flashing in her young eyes. "I can't be afraid! I cannot allow them to frighten me! We have to do something to rescue the Rangers and save the pokemon!"

Ringer felt herself give a slight smile. Lynn was a strong little girl. Standing up to your fears was a great quality; one that was often required for a good Pokemon Ranger. Understanding dawned and Ringer suddenly remembered why Lynn was so familiar. She was the very ten year old that she had rescued on the mission where she had faked her death! Ringer remembered the courage that this young girl had and she knew she could trust them. "You know, you'd make a pretty great Pokemon Ranger." Ringer said.

"What?" Lynn raised her eyebrows.

Ringer nodded slowly. "I haven't been completely honest with you guys. I'm actually a Ranger. I didn't tell you before, but I've had a history with Team Galaxy and I wasn't sure who I could trust. Lynn, your story has matched up exactly with my mission and after going through so much, there is no way you two could be spies."

Lynn's mouth twisted into a hopeful smile. "Then you can contact the other Rangers with your device and warn them of the trap!"

Ringer shook her head sadly. "When I fell into the river, I lost my Pokegear. But I do have a way we can send a message." She pulled her headband out of her blond hair and began tying a knot in the red fabric.

"But how are you going to send that?" Avia asked. "Both of my flying pokemon are out looking for the nearest town."

"I have someone that could help us." Ringer pulled out Valor's pokeball and sent the tiny Rufflet into the sky. "Valor, we need your help."

The pokemon squawked, ready to offer assistance. Ringer handed the knotted, red headband to Valor. "Rangers often will use our red bands to send messages or signal danger. Different knots mean different things." Ringer explained. "Valor, we need you to take this to the others as quickly as you can. Hopefully you'll catch them before they reach the top."

The rufflet nodded enthusiastically and took off into the stormy sky.

"Hold on, a second." Avia said, holding up a hand. "If you're really a Pokemon Ranger then why do you use pokeballs instead of your capture stylus?" She observed.

Ringer sighed, explaining this was something she really didn't like to do. Mostly because everyone tended to ask her about it. "I do have a capture stylus with me, but I rarely use it." She motioned toward her holstered device. "In every TV show and all the stories about Pokemon Rangers the exact pokemon for the job just happens to be there. Well, in the real world, life isn't that glorious. It's rare when I find the right pokemon at the right time. So I carry the most helpful pokemon with me in pokeballs. That way I'm ready for anything."

"Wow," Lynn said, stunned. "I never thought of it that way. What kind of pokemon do you have with you?"

"You've met three of them all ready; Ray, Maple and Valor," Ringer explained. "My last pokemon is a buisel named Puddle." Ringer paused and peered down at Ray. "I should have sent him out earlier… Huh, at least you were there to rescue me." Ray yipped gleefully.

"Maybe you could take your sawsbuck and go up Adapt Mountain." Lynn suggested.

Avia shook her head as she began pacing around the clearing. "No. It wouldn't be fast enough. If only my Pidgeot were here, then it could fly us up there, no problem." A gust of wind and suddenly a large bird appeared in the clearing. The Pidgeot pointed North East and cooed softly.

Avia nodded. "Thanks for doing that for us, Pidgeot, but it looks like our destination has changed." Avia turned to Lynn and Ringer. "Pidgeot will take you two up to the top of Adapt Mountain to save the other Rangers. I'll take the sawsbuck and start heading to Kalan Peak."

Ringer was already shaking her head. But sudden screeching got her looking up to the sky. Valor came flying into the clearing and dropped the knotted headband back into Ringer's hand. The Rufflet wouldn't stop crying aloud.

Avia's face paled. "Valor says that we're too late. The Rangers have already fallen into Team Galaxy's trap."

Lynn gasped, and Ringer looked at Avia with confusion. How did Avia know that? Usually people couldn't understand pokemon unless their bond was extremely strong; like her and Ray. But Avia only knew Valor for less than a few minutes. Ringer's jaw dropped when she realized what it was. Avia could hear a pokemon's inner voice.

"Avia…" Ringer said, but a stern look from the young woman stopped her from continuing. It was obvious that Avia didn't want other people to know of her ability. Ringer nodded slowly. If Team Galaxy found out then they wouldn't think twice about kidnapping her.

The young Rufflet squawked wildy and it suddenly began to glow white and blue. Ringer had to cover her eyes from the blinding light but when it had dissipated the Rufflet had vanished and in its place was a Braviary. The large bird looked proud and powerful in his dark blue and red feathers. Valor had evolved.

Ringer quickly rushed over and patted Valor's beak. "You really wanted to help out didn't you?" The braviary nodded excitedly. Ringer climbed onto the large bird pokemon and looked down at Avia and Lynn. "Okay, change of plans! You guys take Pidgeot to Kalan Peak and stop Team Galaxy from capturing those Articuno. Valor and I will go rescue the other Rangers."

"But you're injured!" Lynn exclaimed. "Won't you need help?"

"I have my pokemon with me." Ringer tried to sound confident. "Besides, we've been through much worse, haven't we?" Ray yipped in agreement as he jumped up next to Ringer on Valor's feathery back.

Lynn looked scared, and Avia nodded solemnly "Be careful, Ringer." They returned Maple and the Espeon into their respectful pokeballs and got onto their rides, Ringer made sure that Ray was secure and they took off into the sky.

Ringer looked back as Lynn and Avia flew further North. She had sent two people she had just met to fight against Team Galaxy… Ringer shut away the horrible memories. She would have to trust them to do their best until she could get there. But first she had to rescue Grey and the others.

Ringer shivered as they flew above the clouds. She could feel the wind becoming colder. A flake of white hit her cheek and Ringer's heart filled with dread; the snowstorm had begun.

"Valor, we need to quickly get to the mountain top before they see us, Do you know where it is through all of these clouds?" Valor briefly glanced at her and nodded confidently. They dived through the snowy clouds and hid behind a pile of boulders near the crest of the mountain.

Ringer slid off of Valor's back. Pain flared as her foot touched the ground, reminding Ringer that she needed to get it wrapped. She grimaced and tried to ignore the pain. She still had a job to do.

Slowly pushing herself into a kneeling position she looked out behind the large boulder. She identified Team Galaxy by the logo on the people's uniforms. By the looks of it, they were just finishing up and putting mysterious devices into boxes. But where were her fellow rangers?

Ringer counted three helicopters and guessed that her friends were inside one of them. If they left now, there was no way that Valor would be able to stop them mid flight. They needed to attack before they lifted off.

Ringer reached down and whispered something in Ray's ears. He nodded, jumping slightly before he dug into the ground. She let out her sawsbuck and buisel and instructed them to distract the members of Team Galaxy. She would go around to rescue the others. Valor nodded and the three pokemon went around the boulder to begin their attack.

It was then that Ringer remembered that she had nothing to steady herself on. Glancing around the area she caught a glimpse of a stick about her height and used it as a walking stick as she stepped onto the chaotic battle field.

Boxes and tools were scattered along the ground and many Team Galaxy Grunts were quickly joining the battle.

Ringer stumbled to one of the helicopters and opened up the side door. Inside she was shocked to see Grey handcuffed to the side. No one else was in the airship. That was strange. Taking a closer look at her leader she noticed that he was all beat up and his eye was swollen shut. At least he hadn't gone down without a fight. He looked up as she walked in and the look on his face was priceless.

"Ringer!" Grey exclaimed. "What are you doing here? How did you--"

"I'm getting you guys out of here. Let's go." By that time she had already picked the handcuffs and helped him to his feet. He simply looked at her dumbfounded. "Do you have your pokemon?" she asked, knowing that her own pokemon needed all the help they could get.

"Team Galaxy took them away." Grey clenched his teeth in anger.

"We will have to make due, then." The two walked quickly to the door, and peeked out. By this time a few of the Team Galaxy Grunts had their pokemon out and were fighting Ringer's pokemon. She knew that they wouldn't be able to keep this up for long, she had to rescue the others and find their pokemon before Team Galaxy realized what she was doing.

Ray suddenly jumped out of the ground in front of them and Grey gasped in fright. Ringer nodded approvingly as she saw the tilted ground just beneath the Helicopters. Team Galaxy was grounded, there was no way they could escape now. "Good job, Ray."

A cry of help alerted Ringer to her Buisel who was outnumbered three to one. "Ray, use quick attack!" Ringer commanded. Ray took off at full speed and hit one Houndoom right in the chest, knocking him into another pokemon.

Ringer glanced at Grey. "Do you know where they put your pokeballs?"

"I think I saw them put them in that helicopter over there." He pointed to one of the tipped Helicopters.

"Take my Buisel and go get everyone's pokemon. I'll get the rest of our team." The two split up and Ringer hobbled over to the third helicopter, but as her hand reached the door handle the heavy metal slammed open and sent her flying backwards. Before she could scramble away, a strong pokemon pinned Ringer to the ground. Ray growled, that pokemon was quick. Through the corner of her eye she saw a root and immediately knew that this was a Trevenant; The Elder Tree pokemon. The intimidating creature waited for instructions from its master.

A man calmly walked out of the helicopter, followed closely by a second Trevenant. He looked down at the growling Umbreon. "Don't even try it. In fact, how about all of you settle down?" His voice was oddly quiet and demanding. The chaos slowed to a stop as Ringer's pokemon realized the danger she was in. The man sighed, relishing the quiet. "Ah, isn't that better?" He turned toward the helicopter that Grey had gone into.

"I know you are in there." He continued in his soft voice. "I have your fellow Ranger. So come out peacefully and no harm will come to her!"

It was quiet and Ringer wondered if Grey had even heard the strange man but then the door opened. Grey walked out and he was followed by Rangers Davis and Bates. None of them had their pokeballs, Grey must have chosen the wrong helicopter.

"Who are you?" Grey called out to the strange man.

"My name is Galadon, Admiral of Team Galaxy. Now, you have a choice, you can surrender," He pointed toward Ringer. "Or watch her die."

"Don't give in!" Ringer quickly said but the Trevenant squashed the air out of her. Ray growled even more fiercely but he wasn't in a position to do anything.

The two other Rangers looked to Grey. They would follow him no matter what he chose. Ringer saw him glance at her, Confusion, shock and uncertainty highlighted in his face. It was almost as if he had never considered the fact that someone could get hurt or even killed. Ringer held down her fears and nodded slightly. Grey and the others needed to finish the mission and save the Articuno.

Ranger Grey's eyes widened as he realized what she wanted him to do. Ringer saw him take a breath and his face steeled in determination as he gazed fiercely at the wicked Admiral.

"We are the Pokemon Rangers!" He exclaimed loudly. "We will never give up when people and pokemon are in danger!" He pointed his finger and Ringer's Buizel came rushing out of the helicopter with a wave of water. It charged toward the large Trevenant.

Galadon sneered and snapped his fingers. An Aggron appeared out of the ground and stopped Puddle's attack. At that same moment the Trevenant hovering above Ringer began charging its most powerful move; solarbeam.

Ringer's fear pressed heavily against her chest but there was nothing anyone could do. Her pokemon were too far away. Was this to be her end? The solar beam finished charging and the Trevenant aimed it down at her. Accepting her fate, Ringer closed her eyes.

A shriek filled the air as a large weight smashed into the ghost tree pokemon. The ground to Ringer's left exploded as the solar beam barely missed its target. She braced herself from the flying rocks and realized that the entrapping weight had disappeared from her back.

Ringer eagerly looked up, wondering what was happening. She recognized Pidgeot as it was attacking the Trevenant and pushing it further away. To her left, an Espeon and an Archen tackled the giant Aggron. It flew backwards right into the third Helicopter and destroyed the airship, sending bits of metal everywhere. Ringer knew exactly who had come to their rescue.

She heard another charge of a Solar Beam and quickly rolled to her right. The ground erupted as Ringer barely dodged the second attack. Ray charged and tackled the second Trevenant before it could attack again.

Avia and Lynn were the first to Ringer's side. "What were you thinking?" Avia scolded. "You could have been killed!"

Ringer was about to reply when Team Galaxy appeared out of the fast falling snow. They had no time to talk, they had to battle against Team Galaxy's small army of Liepards and Houndooms.

Lynn helped Ringer to her feet and handed her the walking stick. Immediately Ringer began calling out moves to her pokemon. Ringer noticed a ball of red and white hidden amongst the debris of the broken helicopter. It was a pokeball!

Ranger Davis and Bates found their pokeballs and were calling out their pokemon to join the battle.

Lynn rushed around searching through the rubble for her Togekiss. When she found its ball, she threw it up in the air. "Tappy! I choose you!"

Ringer heard the name and gazed up to see her old friend fly into the sky. How did Lynn have Tappy as her pokemon? Ringer wondered briefly, but turned her attention back to the battle. All of Team Galaxy's pokemon had been defeated except for the two powerful Trevenant. "Valor, use Brave Bird!"

"Tappy, use Sky Attack!" Lynn called.

"Air Slash, Pidgeot!" Avia commanded.

The three flying pokemon rounded on the two Trevenant and successfully hit their target. Smoke and debris filled the air from the explosion. All became quiet.

A cackle came from out of the foggy weather and with it the sound of an engine. When the dust had been cleared by the snow, there was no sign of Galadon, or even a single member of the wicked team. All that was left were the three broken helicopters. Team Galaxy had gotten away.

As the heat of the battle faded, Ringer's ankle began to throb angrily. It was clear that she had overdone it and no doubt made it worse. Overcome by the agony, she hobbled over to a rock and sat down. She didn't want to think about almost being killed or how Team Galaxy had slipped through her grasp.

Ray crawled into her lap and she hugged him like there was no tomorrow. She desperately needed the comfort and the warmth of his fur. She shook violently and tears threatened. Ringer barely held them back. She heard footsteps getting closer and she glanced up to see Avia, Lynn, and Rangers Bates and Davis all standing in front of her.

Lynn crouched down to her level. "Ringer?" She asked softly, "Are you okay?"

Ringer shook her head. With tears so close to the surface she didn't trust herself to speak.

Ranger Davis put her hand on Lynn's shoulder. "I think she just needs time alone." They started to walk away and Davis noticed Ringer's shivering. She took off her large bag and shuffled through it until she found a wrap. She started addressing Ringer's wound "I'll just wrap this right now, We'll take a closer look later.."

Ringer nodded gratefully for the kind gesture and she caught the eye of Ranger Grey. He seemed almost frozen as he stood in the same spot as before, his posture rigid. But Ringer noticed something different in his eyes. She motioned for him to come over and he slowly made his way to her.

"Ringer, I--" He started.

"Don't worry about it, Grey," Ringer interrupted. "I'm still here and we beat Team Galaxy."

"But my decision almost got you… I guess I just never thought that ..." He didn't finish.

"Grey, don't," Ringer continued. "What's done is done. Learn from your mistakes and move on. That's the best we can do." Ringer looked closer at Grey's face. His eyes were somewhat duller as if he held hidden grief deep inside him. He seemed ashamed of his actions and his confidence as a leader had suffered a hard blow.

A sudden thought popped into her head. "What about the Articuno?!"

"What?" Grey asked, but Ringer was already up and stumbling over to Avia and Lynn, pulling her own coat closer against the snow.

"What happened to the Articuno?" She questioned.

Lynn spoke. "I convinced Avia that you would need our help. I heard the nervousness in your voice when you said you could do it. So we came back just to make sure." She glanced northward at Mount Kalan in the distance, "We should probably get going…."

Ringer looked to Grey for his instructions but he was quiet. He didn't know what to do. Ringer took a breath. "Ranger Bates, because of your fear of heights, you will head back to our aircraft. The rest of us will take our flying pokemon and go to Mount Kalan. If luck is on our side, we should be able to get to the Articuno before Team Galaxy. Let's move out!" To her relief no one questioned her. They trusted her enough to lead them through this mission.

Ringer and Ray hopped onto Valor's feathery back. Lynn and Avia climbed onto Tappy. Grey and Davis climbed onto Avia's Pidgeot. They took off into the snowy sky hoping to save the Articuno before it was too late.

"Ringer? Do you trust these two?" Ranger Davis called over the high wind. She and Grey had flown close to them and Ringer knew they were talking about Lynn and Avia.

She quickly nodded. "Lynn is the one who found out that Team Galaxy was going after the Articuno in the first place. And Avia… Well, I think she just wants to help Lynn. Besides, she can hear the inner voice of pokemon." She felt a twinge of guilt in revealing the secret.

"Inner voice?" Grey spoke up. "I thought people like that only existed in the past."

"You are wrong." Ringer stated. "I am sure there are many out there who are afraid to show their true selves in fear of those who would use them for evil purposes." The other two rangers nodded.

Ringer had Valor fly closer to Tappy. "If things go wrong, I want you two to go find help." She called out to Avia and Lynn.

"No way," Avia retorted. "I won't leave my Pidgeot, or any Articuno, to get taken by Team Galaxy."

"But what about Lynn? Surely you don't want her to go through more than she already has." Ringer clarified.

"Ringer," Lynn called out. "I can take care of myself, you know. I escaped from Team Galaxy just fine."

Ringer couldn't think of a counter argument so she just stayed quiet, hoping everything would be okay.

The winter storm quickly became a blizzard as they continued to fly North. The snowflakes were huge and sticking to everything. Mount Kalan disappeared and Ringer worried that they would miss the peak entirely. They would have to completely rely on their pokemon's ability to find the tall mountain.

A second later Mount Kalan loomed ahead of them, much larger than Ringer imagined. It was a little less than twice the height of Adapt Mountain and it had huge snow banks hanging over the steep cliffs. Lynn was quick to point out the hidden crevasse where the Articuno nest was but the parent Articuno were nowhere to be seen.

Because of the tight fit only one pokemon could land on the nest at a time. Pidgeot landed first and Ranger Grey and Davis quickly bounced off as the large bird dove back out of the way so Tappy and her riders could fly in.

Ringer heard a strange humming noise and searched the white looking for its source. Following the sound around the peak, Ringer saw it. There was a large, black aircraft and its back door was open, as if something was just put inside and they were urgent to get away.

Valor moved so Ringer could better see inside the strange aircraft. In two separate cages there were two articuno, both clawing to get out.

Ringer gasped in shock. "Team Galaxy already have the legendary pokemon! We have to get them out of there!" She motioned for Valor to fly closer but the door was quickly closing. They wouldn't be able to make it.

One of the Articuno angrily thrust its beak between the bars of the cage and shot a beam of ice into the air just as the door closed completely. The attack hit the snowbank on top of the cliff and sent it all crashing down. Right over the Articuno's nest!

Valor pumped his wings and hovered safely away from the falling snow. But Ringer's eyes searched frantically as the snow continued to slide down the slope. The Pidgeot was okay, but everyone else were still in the nest! It seemed like an eternity had passed when the last of the snow drifted to a stop. To Ringer's horror, the avalanche had completely filled in the crevice where the nest was. Avia's Pidgeot squawked with terror and desperately began digging through the snow with its powerful talons.

Ringer watched the pokemon's futile attempts, knowing that it was probably already too late. But then the snow started to quake, and tremble. Suddenly it all came tumbling out as Tappy used its Aura Sphere and cleared the snow away from the nest. Pidgeot screeched and flew away from the mini avalanche.

Tappy soared into the sky, clearly happy that it saved them and Valor quickly dropped Ringer and Ray onto the nest. "Are you guys okay?" Ringer asked as she stumbled over to the others.

Lynn smiled, "Yup, Tappy used her protect move, and stopped the snow from crushing us. But what happened? Where did you go?"

Ringer looked down at the nest and answered hesitantly. "I heard an airship and saw Team Galaxy leaving with the captured Articuno." Everyone gasped. "It was the articuno who caused the avalanche. But while I was distracted by the snow, Team Galaxy made their escape. I didn't even see where they went."

Ringer was angry at herself for being so foolish. After being so close she had let them get away! Ringer turned to stare out at the white blizzard. The cove may have provided a little bit of shelter from the storm but it couldn't help against the tempest within Ringer's own soul.

Avia sent out her Archen. "Go see if you can find where Team Galaxy went." She told it and the small bird pokemon took off.

"But why would an Articuno send snow down on their nest?" Ranger Davis wondered.

"They were trying to escape. It was probably an accident." Avia said

"Hey, guys. Look over here." Lynn was on her knees looking at what looked like a blue-grey rock. "I think I know why the Articuno sent the snow crashing down on us. They were trying to protect their egg."

Everyone looked at each other in silence.

~~00*00~~

Ringer was back in Director Opal's Office. Her right foot was wrapped and propped up on another chair with an ice bag. After getting on the nest the storm had become so bad not even their pokemon could stay aloft. So they had spent hours in the cove, waiting to contact their pilot and arrange for him to come pick them up.

Ringer was just glad that Ranger Davis had so much medical knowledge. Davis had a look at Ringer's ankle and did a proper diagnostic of it. Ringer had torn her ligament, and all of the action just made it worse. She would have to wear a boot for the next few weeks.

After all the excitement and disappointment, Ringer was both mentally and physically exhausted. Director Opal had requested her to personally explain what had happened. But what was done was done. It wasn't like she could go back and change time.

Ringer turned her attention back to Director Opal. After Ringer told her about finding the Articuno Egg she hadn't spoken a word. She looked up now. "Ringer, you weren't in possession of an egg when you came back. What happened to it?" She finally asked.

Ringer knew this question would come sooner or later but Ringer wasn't quite ready to explain her decision. She took a deep breath and explained anyway. "I gave the Articuno Egg to Avia." She stated simply. Director Opal was stunned and Ringer explained further. "Avia had hopes of becoming a Sky Master. She knows flying types like no one else and she's always on the move. It would be hard for anyone to track her down. Plus, with her ability to hear a pokemon's inner voice Avia would be able to help it grow to its true potential." Ringer's long winded explanation caused another period of silence from the Director.

Ringer waited for Director Opal to say anything but all the woman did was turn and stare at the sunshine just outside her window. Did the director understand what drove Ringer to that conclusion? Or was she disappointed that they wouldn't be able to take care of the egg? Ringer's insides began to flutter as she imagined the Director angry. That wouldn't be a pretty sight in any situation, much less in her own office.

"Thank you, Ringer, for telling me this." Director Opal said at last. "It's good to know that you haven't completely changed. Your heart is still in the right place." Ringer looked up to see Opal's wide smile. "In your place, I would have done the very same thing. But next time, you should clear it with me first."

The corner of Ringer's mouth tilted up. Of course Director Opal would understand. She was always understanding of every situation to pop up. Why had she worried that Opal would be mad again? Ringer nodded in response to Opal's suggestion. "Okay, I'll be sure to do that next time."

The door opened and Ringer twirled in her chair to see the secretary let someone in. He was an average sized man with a large belly and hair neatly combed to one side. His dark blue overcoat matched his dress pants and his blood red tie stood out on his white shirt. He looked ready for business.

Ringer immediately recognized her partner in the International Police; Detective Valos. Four years ago, when she had first teamed up with the detective, she had quickly learned that he was a man of few words. But his passions drove him to stop the bad guys and do things way beyond his duty. He definitely wasn't one you wanted to cross.

"Thank you, Miss Charlotte." Director Opal said as her secretary closed the door. "Welcome, Detective Valos. I'm glad you could make it." She motioned toward the chair just to the left of Ringer.

"Thanks for having me, Director." Valos sat down, and gave a slight nod toward Ringer. Apparently he had already read the other's report and approved of what she had done.

"First of all," Director Opal said as she sat back down in her large swivel chair. "I have to thank you, Detective Valos, for letting Ringer join in on this operation. Without her, the whole thing would have been disastrous."

Valos nodded. "I'm just glad my partner was finally able to catch Team Galaxy doing something. After four years of empty leads, it's a relief to know that they have finally stepped out of the shadows."

"But why would they go after a Legendary Pokemon like Articuno?" Ringer puzzled.

"That is partly why I have called both of you in," Opal said. "Ringer has already described to me all of the details of the mission and Team Galaxy now has two Legendary Articuno in their grasp. I have a feeling that they will be after other powerful pokemon. Valos, I believe it is time for Ringer to return to her duties as a Pokemon Ranger."

Detective Valos tilted his head in thought while Ringer struggled to rise, the icepack falling to the floor. "Director—" She cringed from her pain. "Team Galaxy has finally resurfaced and now may be the only time I will be able to stop their evilness once and for all!"

"I am aware of that." Opal stated calmly as she gazed into Ringer's eyes. "But I didn't say that you would stop doing missions with Detective Valos and the rest of the International Police. I just thought you would want to work with us in case Team Galaxy started going after other Legendary Pokemon."

Ringer simmered but didn't say anything. Inside she could see how it would be helpful but being a full blown Ranger again meant other distracting missions. She wanted to have her full attention go to stopping Team Galaxy and nothing else. Nothing else mattered. She noticed her long silence and was about to open her mouth to speak but Valos beat her to it.

"Well, I think it's a splendid idea," Valos said cheerfully. "With Ringer working between our two agencies we would be able to share information more freely. Together we might have a chance at defeating them." He turned to Director Opal. "Did you already contact the Chief of International Police to confirm this idea?"

The Director nodded. "Yes. He has already approved of this idea." She stood up and walked over to face Ringer. "Welcome back, Ranger Ringer. We are glad to have you with us again." She held out a ranger jacket and for a moment Ringer just stared at it for a long minute.

The red ranger jacket was a symbol for everything a Pokemon Ranger stood for; honesty, bravery, and selflessness. A familiar feeling welled up from within Ringer and she slowly took it out of the Director's hands. The red fabric felt soft and she felt that feeling of purpose that she used to have before this long nightmare had happened. She looked up at Opal and hesitantly nodded her thanks.

Director Opal seemed relieved that Ringer had accepted. "Well, that's all I wanted to ask. Detective Valos, Miss Charlotte will escort you out." The secretary came in and Valos left as quickly as he had arrived. The door closed behind them.

Ringer put her wrapped ankle into a boot and grabbed her new ranger jacket. She stood up to leave when Director Opal put a soft hand on her shoulder. "I thought you would be happy to be back with us," Opal said softly. "But what happened to you? Why are you acting like this?"

Ringer pushed down her emotions and looked her Director in the eye. "For four years I have been hunting down Team Galaxy. This was the first sign of them since I joined the International Police. I was not supposed to fail this mission."

"But you didn't," Opal said. "You're still alive and with us, I'd like to think that's a success."

Ringer just turned away. "I let them take those Articuno. I let Team Galaxy get away. It's all because I was so focused on the safety of the others." She paused as she considered her next words. "That is why I'll trust you to not send me on group missions in the future." Ringer said as she started toward the door.

"Ringer, this isn't who you really are," Opal said, her voice filled with emotion. "Where is the ranger who always had a smile? Where is the ranger who excelled at inspiring and working with others? Where is the real Sierra Steinfield?"

Ringer stopped just as her hand touched the doorknob. "Director, no one can know who I really am." She whispered.

Opal let out a sharp breath. "Well, when are you going to realize that there is more to your life than missions; than stopping Team Galaxy? Why are you so obsessed with this?"

Ringer slowly turned and looked Director Opal in the eye. "Everyone does things for those they love. I am no different."

"Your family?" Director Opal said, confused. "But they know, don't they?"

"To everyone besides you and I, Sierra Steinfield is dead," Ringer's face was cold and determined. "Only I can stop Team Galaxy and I couldn't put them at risk."

"So... all this time?"

Ringer nodded once. "Good day, Director." She quickly opened the door and let herself out, almost shutting it before Ray could follow her through.

Ringer felt like she could have just sat down and cried. She had come to hate and regret the decision she had made four years ago, but she had to live with it until the end. A sudden yell of delight filled the hall.

"Ringer! I did it! I did it!" Ringer glanced up to see Lynn racing toward her, her steps echoing along the tile floor. "I am officially a Ranger-in-training!"

Ringer blinked a few times to get rid of the tears that threatened, but Lynn was quick to spot them.

"What happened? Are you in trouble? Because of what you did!?!"

Ringer quickly shook her head. "No, Director Opal approved of what we did."

"Oh, good!" Lynn said, releasing her breath. "I was afraid they might fire you!" Ringer chuckled as she looked down at the ranger jacket in her hands. Lynn followed her gaze to the red item. "Hey, I got one of those too! Why did you just get one?"

"I've been working with the International Police." Ringer explained. "Director Opal has decided that it's time for me to return as a full fledged Pokemon Ranger."

Lynn's face lit up with excitement. "Oh! Being an experienced Pokemon Ranger sounds like so much fun!" She squeaked. "You know, I've always wanted to become a Pokemon Ranger."

"Really?" Ringer asked. "Why is that?" She already knew where Lynn was heading but she wanted to hear it from the girl's own perspective.

"About four years ago, I was kidnapped," Lynn started her story. "And it was a Pokemon Ranger who came to my rescue. As we were running away a field caught on fire and we were trapped. The ranger put me on her Togekiss and I was able to get to safety. A little while later the Ranger's family came to me and told me that the Ranger had perished in the fire. They knew that their Ranger would want me to keep the Togekiss. Tappy hasn't left my side since." Lynn said. The memories flashed through Ringer's mind.

Lynn continued. "Because of what happened that day I have always been grateful for Pokemon Rangers. I've wanted to become one but I didn't know how until you mentioned it while we were trapped on that nest. Thanks Ringer."

Ringer had zoned out and was staring blankly in front of her. So it was her family who gave Lynn the Togekiss. A deep yearning grew inside and Ringer had to fight to hold it back.

Lynn noticed the distant look in her eyes. "Ringer, did you know that Ranger? The one that died in the wildfire?"

Ringer thought quickly. "Yeah… I knew her. She was a pretty good friend of mine. It's actually because of her that I became a Pokemon Ranger."

Lynn's eyes sparkled. "Then we can celebrate her memory together! The Ranger who helped make us who we are today! Because of her, we are able to do so much good!"

The young girl was right. Ringer realized. Because of what she had done as Sierra led both of them to do good now. Ringer suddenly felt hope for her future missions. They may not all be about stopping Team Galaxy but the job of a Pokemon Ranger is to serve both people and Pokemon.

Ringer unfolded the ranger jacket in her hands and happily put it on. There was more to being a Pokemon Ranger than just missions.

Ringer smiled. They continued down the hall and entered the lobby. "So, do you know who's going to be your trainer?"

Lynn shrugged. "They'll tell me tomorrow. But I hope it's you! You are so strong and confident and you always do the right thing, no matter the cost! I want to be a Ranger just like you, Ringer!"

"Lynn, I want you to become the best you can be and I'm sure you'll get the best teacher the Rangers can provide, but don't be too disappointed if it's not me."

Lynn's gaze fell to the floor. "Oh. But we'll still be able to go on missions together, right?"

"You can bet your headband on it." They arrived at the front doors where Ringer saw an old woman standing by a car, beckoning to them.

"I'm coming Grandma!" Lynn called out.

Ringer patted Lynn on her shoulder. "Well, I'm extremely happy that you are joining us, Lynn. I look forward to seeing your progress."

Lynn's face lit up. "Thanks Ringer! I promise I will do my best!" She quickly ran and got into the back of her grandmother's car, waving as they drove past.

Ringer felt the tears threaten once again. Lynn was right. She and Ray always did what was right, no matter the cost. Ringer sighed. If only the cost wasn't so high… She looked down to see Ray's sad face. They had made their choice over four years ago and now they were facing the consequences.
