Dick was at a computer in the Batcave. It had been almost twenty-four hours Bruce since collapsed and fell into his coma.
Since then Thomas and Dick were working hard on finding out the reason behind it all, not just Bruce, but all the other kids too. Thomas even allowed Dick to miss school so that he could stay with Bruce at the hospital. Since it was going to be difficult concealing Bruce's absence, Thomas decided it would be more beneficial to have his son to have him at the hospital with the other children. With Dick spending time with him he could monitor his brother he could gain valuable information.
"Get some sleep," Thomas said coming and putting a hand on Dick's shoulder. "You have been up for almost twenty-four hours." He was getting worried for his youngest son, he had been working as Nightwing since everything happened to Bruce.
Dick jolted slightly at his touch. "I'm fine. I've taken naps. I just need a soda and some candy...unless you let me have coffee...
Thomas smiled a little. "No coffee you're too young. How about tea and some sleep, real REM sleep?"
"No! I want to help find out what happened to Bruce..."
"If you want to help should get some sleep that way you are more focused."
"I can focus!" Dick rebutted fighting a yawn, he was looking over some candy he had. One was just like the one he gave Bruce. He was about to put it in his mouth when Thomas stopped him.
"Dick," he said.
"I'm awake!" He said his eye snapping open.
"Not that, your candy smells like kiwi and you are about to eat it." Thomas comment about Dick's weird allergy they discovered.
"Oh yeah…" He said placing it down and looking at the wrapper. "weird they don't have a list of ingredients…isn't that illegal?" The only text he saw was:
'Hey, kid! Want a chance to win a free month's worth of candy? Text the word 'candy' to this number and remember kids this candy is NOT sold in stores!'
His eyebrows knit together, he pulled out his phone and texted the number to see what would happen.
Seconds later he got a text back.
'CONGRATULATIONS! You have won month's supply of candy! Please come to 269 Elm street Gotham USA. Children only. No adults.'
Dick smiled and laughed a little, the message was so suspicious, to him. He wondered how many kids actually fell for it. He actually felt bad for anyone gullible to fall for this obvious scam
Dick leaned his head back. "Want to go for a ride, Batman?"
Thomas looked down at Dick smiling up at him. He knew it was a terrible idea to take Dick with him, but having him with him could be the key getting inside.
"Yes," Thomas said after a long pause, "but we are going in with a plan. Before we go I want to know everything about this location, all the general facts, blueprint, cameras—"
"Yeah I do that all the time, but can I go with you inside right and not just in the Batmobile?"
"Get the information I asked first, as I said we need a plan. I also need you to—"
"Trace the number, even though it's probably a burner."
Thomas only nodded, "I am going to speak with Alfred about what we are doing and check in on Bruce."
"Yes sir," Dick said going up to the computer and starting to find the information Thomas asked for.
While Dick looked for the information Thomas took the piece of candy and ran it through the mass spectrometer.
"Nightwing, this is a serious mission if we are going to find out what happened to Bruce and the others. You are the only one who can go into this place without a second thought. I'm counting on you Dick." Batman said. There were down the street from the location, hidden in an alley so Dick would not be seen leaving the Batmobile. Thomas outside the Batmobile kneeling next to Dick speaking softly.
"You can trust me Batman, I'm ready for this."
"You have your escrima sticks—"
"Hidden. Ear piece," Dick pointed to it. "In and operational."
"I'm going to be right behind you. You go in through the front entrance, I am going to use a window. Try and get as much information recorded as you can."
"Yes, sir." Dick held back his smile of excitement, he knew the seriousness of this mission. He wanted to do well and prove himself in the field, instead of just behind the computer.
"Good luck, Nightwing."
"I won't disappoint you Batman," He said leaving the alley as Batman took to the rooftops, never taking his eyes off Dick once he got there.
Dick looked at the numbers on the building and he rolled down the street. "260…263…265…267..269.." He mumbled to himself. When he arrived in the right building it looked very ordinary, to the naked eye. To Dick, with all he had learned working with Batman and Robin, this was highly suspicious. He was just thankful that it was on the ground level and get in easily. Gotham wasn't the most wheelchair friendly city.
There was a small sign on the door at reading 'Gotham's Candy Shop'
"Are you seeing this?" Nightwing asked Batman. Dick was wearing glasses that recorded because he could not go in wearing a mask.
"I am," Batman said, not needing the video feed being across the street. "Go on, don't delay."
Dick reached forward and pushed the door open and wheeled in.
Thomas felt himself holding his breath, he hadn't been this nervous since he sent Bruce on his first solo mission, but then he was protected by his costume. Dick was in a hoodie, and it was obvious who he was. Once the boy went inside Batman jumped across to the roof of the building so that he could get in.
Dick looked around, the room had shelves lined with candy. The scent of all the candy mixed to get smelled amazing. He started to look closer at the jars, memorized by the colors.
"Hi, can I help you?" A young girl with tanned skin and very curly messy brown hair.
"Hi...yes...I got a text saying that I won a months supply of candy!" Dick flashed his brilliant smiled and his eyes almost sparkled.
"Oh! Congratulations..." she was searching for his name.
"My friends call me Dick, even the ones who like me. Just don't call me Ric."
"Well Dick, I'm Anaya. Danny is going to be excited to you."
"Who?" Dick asked.
"Danny Mac, he's the owner," She smiled. "Let me take you to see him."
Thomas was listening in, listening to his charismatic Dick was. He knew he was going to have to watch out for him, he was going to be quite the ladies man. But he was proud of Dick, he was a natural.
When Anaya opened the door it revealed a lookout deck that led down onto the floor. Dick looked down confused the building plans never showed a basement level.
"Find out why the kids are here." Batman said via the com link.
Dick felt his heart race as a man approached them, he was a brightly colors suit with rainbow stripes on looked the boy up and down, never seeing him before. He waited a moment before continuing on.
"Hello! You must be our newest winner!" The man smiled widely. "Welcome to my factory! Come join me," he started to walk away.
"I hope this place has a lift otherwise I'm not going anywhere." Dick smiled.
"Of course, there is one just up a head," Danny said. He pulled a lollipop from his pocket and handed it to Dick.
He took it in his hand and looked it over. It was blue and green swirled. "Is there kiwi in it?" Dick asked.
"No kiwi, it's sour blue raspberry and sweet watermelon, it's a new combination, tell me what you think,"
"Don't eat it," Batman said.
Danny lead him to the lift, while Anaya went back to the storefront.
"I'll try it when I get down, need my hands," Dick smiled. He was looking around trying to take note of everything he was seeing.
The lift was completely open and Dick could see the almost two dozen kids on the floor. Some of them looked familiar from Gotham Academy.
They got down on the floor Danny looked at Dick, waiting for him to have the candy. "Try the candy my boy," he was testing him now.
Batman tensed up. He wasn't liking the Danny Mac, not at all. He wanted to jump down from this shadowy hiding place and help Dick. But he knew he had to trust the boy, he showed no signs of needing help.
"Try the candy," Danny said, "you'd be the first."
"Mr. Mac," a boy called. "The job—"
"Not now," he said sharply.
Dick slipped his hand down to his pocket, he felt the lollipop, but his hand slipped lower to where he had his weapon hidden. "What job?" Dick asked.
"You've never had any of my candy have you?" Danny leaned forward, placing his hand on the armrests of Dick's wheelchair.
"Could you back up," Dick said his voice firm.
"What made you want to open the candy, not eat it, yet text number."
Dick's eyes narrowed "I said back up." His hands were on his weapons
"You're a smart boy. Maybe too smart."
Dick pressed the button on his escrima sticks making them longer, at the same time he moved his hands upward and connected with Danny's forearms then he pushed Danny back with his hands before Batman jumped from his hiding place to help out the boy out by knocking Danny out. Once he did that the kids on the floor started to look around confused.
"I had him!" Dick hissed.
Thomas had Danny tied up. "Now is not the time. Be sure to call me before talking to the police," Thomas said a little harsher than he intended.
Dick nodded, his heart racing as Thomas got to a higher point as more kids started to fill the room, coming from other areas.
"Everyone listen up!" Batman said gaining everyone's attention. "Do not leave! Do not eat any candy!"
"Squirt is that you?" Jason asked running over to Dick, ignoring everything Batman was saying.
"Jason?" Dick said, only half surprised he was there. "We-we should stay together…all of us…" Dick looked up trying to listen to what Thomas, or rather Batman was saying.
"I ain't leaving you, kid," Jason said ruffling Dick's hair before pushing Dick, "Who drove you? I know you have wheels, but this is too far for your wheels to go."
"I asked Alfred to take me to Tim's…he doesn't know I'm here…we should listen to Batman…"
"Well he's gone now, and some dorks listened to him and are now making up wait for the cops," Jason said hearing other kids not letting everyone leave.
"I should call Thomas…" Dick mumbled hearing the approaching sirens while pulling out his phone. He pulled up Thomas's number and called. "Thomas…it's Dick…"
