The past couple of months has been crazy for Thomas and the boys. The benefit in Metropolis at the Baxter's place was going to be a welcomed distraction.
"It will be nice to see Amelia again," Dick smiled.
"How can you miss someone you text almost everyday?" Bruce teased.
Dick's face turned red. "It's not everyday..."
"You have a crush," The older boy teased.
"I don't have a crush! She's...just a girl..."
"Who you have a crush on?"
Alfred came into the room hearing them arguing. "What in heavens name are you two arguing about now?" The butler asked.
"Nothing!" Dick said quickly.
"Dickie has a crush on Amelia Baxter." Bruce said
"No I don't!"
"Master Dick, it is perfect natural to have an infatuation with a girl," Alfred was trying to calm the younger boy.
"It totally is," Jason said appearing eating out of a bag of chips.
"Good heavens!" Alfred scolded. "What have I told you about eating from the crisp bag? And we don't eat with our mouths full."
"Jason!" Dick smiled.
"Where'd you come from?" Bruce asked fist bumping his best friend before taking some of the snack for himself.
"So who you crushing on?" Jason asked.
Bruce pulled out his phone, Dick tried to stop him but he held out out of his reach. "No fair!" Dick complained.
"Squirt even if you were standing we could still hold out of your reach," Jason commented.
The younger boy used his wheelchair to ram them both in the shins.
"Damn it!"
"Only fair!"
"Oh she is cute for a kid," Jason dropped the bag in Dick's lap and took the phone. "Not my type I like them older."
"Look at this!" Bruce pulled up more pictures.
"Stop it!"
Thomas came to see what the commotion was, though when he saw them he was not surprised.
"Should we stop them sir," Alfred asked his master as the bag of chip went flying and the game of keep away continued.
"No, they have been like this since I told them we are going the fundraiser.
Alfred cringed as the wheels ran over the chips.
"If this is what they choose to argue about I'll take it over them hating each other."
Alfred was driving the family to Metropolis. Dick was sitting next to Thomas, but he had fallen asleep and his head rested in his adopted father's lap. Thomas stroked Dick's hair he so badly wanted to help the boy walk again.
"Dad?" Bruce said he could see that there was something on his father's mind.
Thomas glanced down at the younger boy before looking at his eldest son, "I'm speaking with a doctor who is going to look into Dick's case."
"Why didn't you tell Dick?"
"I didn't want to get his hopes up if it's something…"
"It's surgery isn't it…we can make the exoskeleton work…"
Thomas nodded. "You should get some rest too."
"Dad...I want to help him. It's not fair."
"Nothing in life is fair. If life was fair your mother would be here. There would be no need for us to be Batman and Robin. Dick's parents would be alive..."
"I get it..." Bruce didn't like his mother being brought up even if it was by his dad.
The older Wayne sighed. "Neither could work because if his type of spinal cord injury. There's a separation in his spine—"
"So repair it!"
"Sush!" Thomas sighed he looked down at Dick hoping the boy wouldn't wake up. He didn't want to have this conversation with Bruce, but it was clear he wasn't backing down. "At first we couldn't operate because of swelling—"
"It's been over a year!"
"Dick got very lucky in that fall. It was a miracle he only broke his back. But as the months go on it's less likely he will work. We have done his physical therapy right away and..." he sighed. Saying the words even on his adopted son's behalf were a hard pill to swallow, "he made no improvements in months."
"Then surgery!" Bruce shouted.
"Surgery?" Dick's voice was soft. Clearly he had woken up at some point and heard them talk. "Will it help me walk?"
Thomas opened his mouth to say something, but he wanted to be sure exactly what to say to not get the young ex-acrobat's hopes up. "Right now it would only be to see—"
"I'll do it." Dick said.
"Dick it's a long shot," Thomas said point blank not wanting to sugar coat anything now that the boy heard them.
"I don't care...because maybe it will...even you said you can feel a difference in my hips and ankles..." Dick didn't actually feel any difference himself.
Thomas looked at him sadly, that was true, but he hasn't felt a change in months. He stopped felling the change months ago. "Both of you get some rest. Once we get to the hotel we will eat and tomorrow you two can hang out with Jon."
Alfred pulled up in front of the Kent's house it was steel blue and very close to the house on either side of it. There was a short driveway on the right hand side that was only enough space for two cars one behind the other. and didn't have much of a front yard. It was probably about two six foot by foot squares if grass with the walk way connecting them it was boarded with a white picket fence that matched the porch that had three steps.
Dick sighed looking at the house. It was one of the most normal houses he had ever seen, but he hated it. He was going to need help getting up onto the porch. In the fourteen months he's been stuck in this chair he resigned to the fact he needed help with somethings. That didn't mean he had to like. His mind wondered to the idea of surgery.
Bruce got out and went to the trunk to get Dick's wheelchair. He opened up and waited for Dick to scoot over and into it.
"I know you hate it but..." Bruce knew how important it was that he ask permission to help his adopted brother, because in the months he'd lived with them he has grown more independent.
"There's no ramp..." The younger boy frowned. "You can carry me."
Jon was on the porch excited his friends were here, but his excitement was short when he remembered the difficulty Dick would have playing with them. He didn't know why he always forgot about the other boy's handicap. "Hi guys!" He smiled.
Dick locked the wheels to his chair and Bruce picked him up while Thomas picked up the chair.
"Hey SB," Bruce smiled.
"Sup?" Dick grinned.
Once they got into the house Thomas set the wheelchair down and Bruce placed Dick into it.
"How is everyone?" Lois asked.
"We are good!" Dick smiled.
"Can we play?" Jon asked trying not to run laps.
Clark's eyes quickly moved from, Jon to Bruce and then to Dick, followed by a glance to Thomas and then the stairs. Only Thomas caught this quick movement of the Kryptonian alien.
Dick opened his mouth to ask a question.
Jon smiled. "We are inside I can pick you up and fly you up the stairs!" The half Kryptonian knew how much the former acrobat liked flying. "That is if it's okay. If not I'll bring my game down here..."
"No! I wanna fly!" He smiled.
Jon flew up and scooped Dick into his arms and flew around the living room before zipping upstairs, wheelchair forgotten down stairs.
"Hey! Wait for me!" Bruce ran after them.
"Thank you Clark, I have some business to attend to while I am here in town, and thought rather than have them stay at the hotel it would be more fun for them to stay here and play with Jon." Thomas smiled. This was part of his plan to visit the specialist doctor in Metropolis.
"We did our best to be sure Dick can safely move around house with enough space. The hardest part was getting Jon to clean up his room and everything he likes leaving around the house."
"Don't treat him any different, he's very capable."
"We know Thomas," Lois smiled.
"Dr. Wayne, it's finally great to meet you in person." The doctor was tall and slender, with rust colored hair.
"Like wise, Dr. Scott. As I told you on the phone I would rather have you look at Dick's file in person rather than send them digitally. He's my son and I'm protective of him."
"I understand. This is new technology and I know that you are scared. But I promise you this is safe, I have done multiple surgeries with great success."
"I know, but you have also had more failures."
"Yes, it true it is only a twenty-five perfect success rate, but he's young and a strong candidate."
"So you think," Thomas handed over the files. "These cannot be copied and for your eyes only."
"I am aware of HIPPA," Dr. Scott scoffed.
"He's to remain anonymous in your study."
"Yes, all underaged clients are."
"Good, now do you have any questions for me?"
"I do, have you thought about exploratory surgery? There could be something hidden that does not show up on any scans."
"I have."
"And?"
"I'm going to see what Dick's thoughts are..."
Jon, Bruce, and Dick decided that they had enough time playing video games and decided to play outside.
On their way outside Dick saw Lois getting lunch ready.
"Dickie you coming?" Bruce asked on his way out to the small back yard.
"Go ahead without me..." he said rolling closer to Lois. "Do you need help cooking lunch?"
Lois was caught off guard by this. She looked to see that Jon and Bruce were outside. She thought carefully of what she could say. "I hope they didn't forget about you." Is what she decided on not hearing the exchange with the two brothers.
"No...I like cooking." While that was true it wasn't the full truth to why he was inside. The lumpy grass out back would make it hard for him to move his wheelchair chair and he didn't want Jon and Bruce to feel bad for him.
"I didn't know that," she smiled.
"Alfred has been teaching me. It started out as something to distract me because I was having a hard time adapting and it turned into something fun."
"Well I would love a sous chef, how do you feel about tacos?" Lois moved somethings form the counter to the kitchen table so Dick could reach them better. "Did Alfred teach you to use to knife?"
"Yes! I love cutting the food."
"Perfect, I like to make my own salsa, so I need a lot of tomatoes cut."
Under Lois' guidance for the recipe Dick and her worked on making lunch. They even made chocolate chip cookies using Alfred's recipe that Dick memorized.
By the time the pair finished cooking Lois called the boys in to eat (and even Clark was playing with them), Thomas finished at the hospital and along with Alfred they joined the Kents crammed around the small table.
