Fawnpaw awoke, groaning because a rock was pressing itself uncomfortably into her side. Who had put a rock in her nest? In an instant everything came whirling back to her and she stood in a start.
She gasped realizing she had felt the rock against her pelt and could now feel the dirt under her paws. I'm not dead anymore! But wait then that means-
"WHAT THE F-" Jaggedscar was yowling at the sky, Dapplestream attempting to quiet her.
"Look at this place!" Goosepaw ran around the clearing the five of them were in. Fawnpaw gazed around. There were four large trees surrounding them and a very large stone in front of them. She could scent faint scents that seemed familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.
"I think we're at Fourtrees," Aspenflight noted. The ShadowClan cat was staring at him with a bored expression. "What? I actually listened to my elders' stories when I was a kit. Fourtrees is like the Island for us. The Clans have their gatherings here."
"That's all fine and dandy," Jaggedscar flicked her tail. "But what does that Ashstar or whatever expect us to do now? How are we supposed to find out how a stupid stone cracked?"
"I think she was implying that the crack was at the fault of a cat, whether unintentionally or not," Fawnpaw spoke up. "We just have to figure out why."
"They sent back a cat from each Clan," Dapplestream said. "Does that mean we are to join our respective Clans?"
Fawnpaw nodded. Only Clan cats would know about the Moonstone, after all, meaning one of them had to have caused the stone to break. "If there's one of us in each Clan we can figure out what's going on in each one. We can cover the most ground that way."
"The Clans aren't just going to accept us," Aspenflight pointed out. "What was Ashstar thinking?" The thought hadn't occurred to Fawnpaw. To the Clans here they seemed like outsiders, rouges. Clans usually didn't take very kindly to them.
"Ashstar said we had to stop the crack in the Moonstone thing, so we'll have to figure out a way to get accepted by the Clans!" Goosepaw exclaimed. He didn't seemed very bothered by the state of events. Fawnpaw wished she could have his enthusiasm.
"Goosepaw is right," Dapplestream spoke up. "If any of us ever want to get back to our time we're going to have to figure this out."
The SkyClan apprentice was beaming after Dapplestream agreed with him. Fawnpaw supposed that didn't happen very often for the outgoing apprentice. Well! I'm off to find my Clan!" Goosepaw bounded across the clearing.
"You're going the wrong way," Aspenflight pointed out. "Use your nose." Fawnpaw realized that the familiar scent that she was recognizing was WindClan! It smelled a little off but it was still her Clan's scent.
Goosepaw leapt back to the center of the clearing. "Oh! There's SkyClan's scent!" He pointed with his nose. "Oh! And ThunderClan's and RiverClan's are right next to in! WindClan's over there and that other stench is ShadowClan!" Jaggedscar's lip curled as she stared to snarl at the apprentice and Dapplestream pawed at her to stop.
"Before we all leave I think we should make a plan to meet back up here," Fawnpaw suggested. The others looked at her, waiting for her to suggest a time. She shuffled her paws. "Perhaps in seven days? That should give us enough time to learn about our new Clans."
"Great idea, Fawnpaw!" Goosepaw exclaimed. "Okay! Bye everyone! I'm off!" The apprentice sprinted off, following his Clan's scent.
"I will take my leave as well," Dapplestream said. "See you all in a week." She waved good-bye with her tail before padding off. Aspenflight dipped his head in Fawnpaw's direction as he begin to leave. The medicine cat apprentice noticed that Jaggedscar had taken off without saying anything. Now, she was left alone in the clearing.
Fawnpaw took a deep breath before padding off, following WindClan's scent. It was a beautiful day, she noted as the sun shone high in the sky. A few cloud dotted the blue sea overhead and there was a slight breeze ruffling her fur. She realized with a start that she couldn't smell the lake here, a scent that had always been at the back of her nose. Of course, there was no lake here.
She left the grove of Fourtrees behind and came upon rolling hills of grass and meadows. It's beautiful, she thought to herself. She ran through the green grass, the wind tickling her light brown fur. Fawnpaw felt a juvenile wonder surge through her. There was so much to explore!
Fawnpaw stopped suddenly. Fresh scents drifted towards here. It was strange to her because they smelled of WindClan but she did not recognize the individual scents. Fear suddenly tore through her and her mind screamed at her to hide. To these cats she would be an intruder – what would they do to her?
She didn't have much time to dwell on her thoughts as a WindClan patrol apprehended on the ridge in front of her. There were three cats staring down at her, one smaller looking – probably an apprentice.
"You there!" One of the cats yowled down to her. He was a dark brown tabby."What are you doing on WindClan territory?" He scaled the ridge and stood in front of her his comrades following behind him.
"I-uh-" Fawnpaw had not prepared for what she was going to say. What excuse did she have? "I'm just passing through!" She squeaked out. What kind of lame excuse was that?
"Well pass through somewhere else!" The smaller cat bristled at her. He placed his front paw on the ground and then winced. Fawnpaw's ears perked at the sound. Was he hurt?
"You're hurt," she gathered and stared more closely at the apprentice's paw. "It looks infected." There wasn't any reason a paw should have been infected like that. Why hadn't the Clan's medicine cat taken a look at it?
"It's a battle scar!" The cat boasted. What had he gotten in a battle with? A thorn bush?
"If you don't get your wound treated the infection will spread," Fawnpaw couldn't help but warn him. "Soon you'll get sick and if it gets too severe you'll die."
"You're just trying to scare me! Get out of here mangy kittypet!" She wondered if her truth had shaken him because she was neither mangy or smelled of a kittypet.
"Settle down, Oakpaw," the third warrior, a tortoiseshell she-cat, said to the apprentice. "Marshstrike?" She was looking at the brown tabby.
"Do you know medicine, young one?" Marshstrike asked Fawnpaw. She nodded.
"My me- my mother taught me," Fawnpaw said. That was a close one, she thought to herself. They would have thought she was crazy had she let anything slip about her actual life. "I don't know everything but I know enough to recognize an infected wound."
"Can you treat it?" Marshstrike asked her. Why were they asking her? Where was WindClan's medicine cat?
"I can," she answered. Infected wounds could be tricky but luckily Oakpaw's wound didn't look too bad from what she could see.
Marshstrike nodded. "Oakpaw, let her see your paw." The apprentice protested but the tortoiseshell she-cat cuffed him over the ears to shut him up. Fawnpaw looked at his outstretched paw. She realized what had caused the wound in the first place: a thorn, just as she had thought.
"I need you to stay still," Fawnpaw told the apprentice before she grasped his paw and placed her mouth against his toe pads. Despite Oakpaw's squirming, she was able to pull out the thorn. She spat the thorn out on the ground.
"Ow!" Oakpaw complained. The medicine cat apprentice looked around. His paw was bleeding now she would need something... She found a bush nearby and under the branches some cobwebs. Fawnpaw grabbed the cobwebs and pressed them on the apprentice's paw to stop the bleeding.
"The cobwebs should hold for now," Fawnpaw said. "He'll need some chervil or marigold on the wound to make sure the infection doesn't spread, though."
"Can you apply the herbs if we find them for you?" The she-cat warrior asked. Instead of answering the question straight away Fawnpaw just stared. Where was their medicine cat?
"Er...my mother told me you Clan cats had a healer in your Clan," She fumbled for words for her lie. "Why can't yours treat his paw? It's hardly a difficult thing."
Marshstrike's ears flattened slightly and his tail drooped. "Our medicine cat unfortunately passed away; there is no one to heal injuries in our Clan." Fawnpaw wanted to gasp but held it back. She hadn't questioned before why she was the only medicine cat chosen for this mission when all the rest of the cats were warriors. However, this was the reason. WindClan had no medicine cat. Ashstar had intended for her to fill that spot.
"I can continue to treat his paw," Fawnpaw answered the she-cat's question. The tortoiseshell brightened.
"You could join our Clan!" she explained suddenly.
"Dawnheart!" Marshstrike snapped at her.
"What? We don't have a medicine cat! And a loner with knowledge in herbs just happens upon our territory, she must have been sent from StarClan!" Fawnpaw had to stop herself from pointing out that she was sent from StarClan.
Marshstrike flicked his tail. "Nevertheless that is not for you to decide." He stared at Fawnpaw with his green gaze. "It is not for any of us to decide except for Honeystar. If she were to say yes would you consider joining our Clan- I realize I do not know your name, young one."
"Fawnp- Fawn! My name is Fawn!" She chilled herself again for almost slipping up. If she was going to survive here she was going to have to get her stuff together. "I will talk to your leader, yes."
The brown tabby nodded. "Well then, Fawn, let us get you back to our camp." He turned away to begin leading the way. "Oakpaw, stay off that paw. Don't make Fawn's job any harder to heal it."
Fawnpaw scampered off after the three WindClan cats. Had that really just happened? Had it been that easy to get invited to join the Clan. She couldn't help but wonder how the rest of her comrades were faring.
