Fawnpaw followed along with Pebblesong towards Highstones where she would meet with her warrior ancestors at moonhigh. She was barely paying attention to the route they were taking -which she thought she should have. Her mind was on her impending meeting with StarClan.
What if they don't accept me? Her mind was a panicked place. WindClan was the closest Clan to StarClan – that was why they slept underneath silverpelt. There was no way Honeystar would allow her to be the medicine cat if StarClan didn't approve.
"Fawn!" Pebblesong shouted at her and broke her out of her thoughts. The silver warrior was staring at her. She must've been trying to get her attention for a while.
"I'm sorry, what?" Fawnpaw squeaked.
The RiverClan medicine cat's gaze softened. "You're nervous, that's to be expected." The silver she-cat nodded. "StarClan is gentler then most cats think. It's going to be fine." She looked ahead at the path in front of them. "This is Thunderpath, however. We have to be quick. Monsters speed by here and they're strong enough to kill a cat." Fawnpaw gazed ahead with wide eyes, now focused on this new threat. "When I say go we run." Pebblesong watched a monster fly past and then another. "Go!"
The two cats raced across the black ground. Fawnpaw's heart didn't stop hammering in her chest until they were in the grass on the other side. She had seen monsters before at twolegplace but she had never had a reason to cross their dangerous paths.
"Good job, Fawn," Pebblesong said to her. "Look here, this is Highstones." She motioned towards the large mountain in front of them. "And that cavern there is Mothermouth. Inside that is the moonstone." Despite her impending meeting with StarClan, Fawnpaw's paws itched to see the moonstone: the very thing they had been sent back for.
The two cats padded towards the entrance to mothermouth and as they crested a hill Fawnpaw noticed five other cats had already arrived. They had been the last. The young cat wondered sheepishly if she had slowed Pebblesong down. She wasn't used to making such a long trip. The moonpool back home was just beyond WindClan territory.
The cats murrowed mews of greeting. "Well, Pebblesong, did you finally get yourself an apprentice?" One tom asked. He was white with russet blotches.
"No, Falconwing," Pebblesong answered. "Everyone, this is Fawn. She's recently joined WindClan and is hoping to be accepted by StarClan to become their medicine cat."
"Another apprentice!" A dark gray tom purred. "I won't be the only one!"
"Hey, I'm still Falconwing's apprentice!" A pretty ginger she-cat sitting next to the white medicine cat exclaimed.
"Yeah, Nettlestem, but you've already got your name," the tom pointed out. "It's not the same."
"And how do you know StarClan won't give Fawn here a full medicine cat name?" The brown tabby sitting next to the gray tom said.
"Because she's my age!" the medicine cat apprentice said. "And I can't get my name yet because I'm too young."
"Actually, Stormpaw," his mentor made sure to to enunciate the 'paw,' "you keep forgetting herbs that's why you can't get your name."
The medicine cats laughed to one another and even Fawnpaw couldn't help but giggle a little. She realized how she missed her half-moon meetings with the other medicine cats back home.
"Mintflower! You're embarrassing me." Stormpaw flattened his ears and looked away.
"As much as this has been amusing, I think we should head inside." Falconwing stood and stretched his white limbs. "It's nearly moonhigh." Fawnpaw took a deep breath before she followed the medicine cats into mothermouth.
It was dark in the tunnel that led down to the moonstone, causing Fawnpaw to hesitate. Moonpool was so open back at home and this almost felt like they were heading into an open grave. But, she was nudged forward slightly by Pebblesong behind her.
Suddenly, the tunnel opened up into a cavern, the light from a large stone in the center almost blinding Fawnpaw. Light from the half-moon overhead filtered down through a hole in the ceiling, illuminating the stone. She stared at the shining rock in awe. The moonstone.
"Beautiful, huh?" Pebblesong purred. The young brown cat couldn't help but nod. "See what the other cats are doing? Just lay down next to the moonstone. You'll fall into a slumber and awake in StarClan. Don't fret, Fawn. Even I can see that you are special." She winked and then found a spot to lay down next to the stone.
Fawnpaw hesitated. The other cats were all asleep now leaving her the only awake one. She stared at the moonstone wondering for the hundredth time today what StarClan would say. Her mentor at home had preformed her ceremony the first time she had been to moonpool, introducing her to the other medicine cats and StarClan. But here she didn't have a mentor, she was on her own.
Taking a deep breath, Fawnpaw finally found the strength to pad forward. She settled down on the floor and pressed her nose to the cool stone.
Fawnpaw was transported to the familiar StarClan landscape. A moonlit forest lighted her path as she slowly padded forward. Who would she encounter? She wasn't left wondering for long as a white and orange cat appeared in her path.
"Hello, young Fawn." The cat sat, wrapping its tail around her paws. "I am Poppybreeze, WindClan's former medicine cat." Fawnpaw dipped her head, too shaken to say anything yet. "StarClan sees all and yet we did not see you until you appeared at Fourtrees yesterday." Her heart leapt. How was she going to explain that?! "Stop shaking like a mouse. I can already see you have been blessed by StarClan to be a medicine cat. Explain to me how this is possible as I know it was not us who blessed you."
Fawnpaw stared for a moment. Could she trust Poppybreeze? Or any of StarClan listening?
"Speak!" Poppybreeze demanded as she lashed her tail.
"My name is Fawnpaw and I am WindClan's medicine cat apprentice from a time that has not yet happened," she told the StarClan cat. "In my time StarClan is on the verge of being destroyed. I was sent back with four other cats – one from each Clan – to stop this from happening."
"I see," was all Poppybreeze said in reply. Fawnpaw couldn't see behind her green eyes to see what she was thinking. "StarClan's demise begins now?"
The young brown cat nodded. "Sometime soon – I don't want to say anymore."
"No," Poppybreeze agreed. "You are right, Fawnpaw. You are from a time far in the future. You should be careful in what you say. Who knows what will become elders tales and influence the Clans for generations. That goes for your fellow travelers as well – make sure they know."
"I will." She'd tell her companions when they met at Fourtrees. She could only hope none of them had said anything. She worried most about Goosepaw. The apprentice only had half a brain it seemed.
Fawnpaw's fur prickled uncomfortably as Poppybreeze just stared at her. "So..." she opened her mouth. "Am I allowed to be WindClan's medicine cat?"
Poppybreeze finally blinked. "You will always be a medicine cat of WindClan– no matter what time you come from. Even StarClan cannot stop you from helping your Clan."
Fawnpaw dipped her head. "Thank you."
"You are young and I can sense there are still things you do not know about being a medicine cat," the StarClan cat continued. "Your name will remain Fawnpaw, despite you being WindClan's sole medicine cat. I do not believe it is my right to rename you, anyhow." Poppybreeze's words were beginning to echo and Fawnpaw noticed her vision becoming misty. "Good luck, Fawnpaw."
Before Fawnpaw knew it she was opening her eyes next to the moonstone, the other medicine cats still asleep around her. All of her fear was out of her pelt now as she stared at the giant shining stone in front of her. She touched the glowing rock with her paw, feeling the smooth stone underneath her pads. The rock was as hard as the cavern walls. How could something like this ever crack?
