A/N: This is a one shot that I wrote one night when the muse refused to let me sleep. However I could be convinced to make it into a chapter story if its any good. Please review after your finished. BTW I don't own In Plain Sight!

Sometimes You Don't Get What You Want, and Sometimes You Do

By: Bobcatwriter

"Hey spunky do you have everything that you are going to need for career day tomorrow?" Mary Mann née Shannon asked her 6-year-old son.

"Yes Mommy," Marshall Zachariah Mann, Junior aka Spunky said in reply.

"And what are you going to be?" Mary asked her son.

"A marshal just like my mommy and daddy," Spunky said.

"Did you really have to influence him, Marshall?" Mary asked her husband of three years.

"Hey, he came up with that all on his own. I may have helped him a little," Marshall said with his fingers an inch or two apart.

"Yeah Daddy gave me his handcuffs that he uses," Spunky said as he pulled out the handcuffs from his pocket.

"Really? Is that so?" Mary asked, glaring at her husband.

"Hey, he wanted the whole Marshal experience and besides, we had a serious talk that they are just for show and that he isn't to arrest anybody right Spunky?" Marshall asked his son.

"Right," Spunky said.

"Ugh I don't know why they have to have a career day. Like a six-year-old is going to know what they want to do when they grow up," Mary said as she rolled her eyes.

"Because Mary, it's fun. Didn't you have days like that when you were going to school?" Marshall asked.

"No, you have to remember that my childhood was spent taking care of Brandi because Jinx was too hung over on the couch from the bender from the night before," Mary spat.

"Mary give it a break you have been through career day for the last 5 years and every year it's the same thing. At least Nora isn't going to be a Marshal this year, right Norah?" Marshall asked his 9-year-old stepdaughter who was walking through the kitchen.

"Right daddy Marshall," Norah said as she grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl.

"Oh, really and what are you going to be, sweetheart?" Mary asked.

"A nurse just like Aunt Brandi," Norah said.

"A nurse huh? Oh God," Mary asked.

"Hey Mary; a Nurse is a very noble profession," Marshall said.

"Aunt Brandi, let me borrow a stethoscope and some. What do you call them, daddy Marshall what she wears to the hospital?" Norah asked.

"Scrubs?" Marshall asked.

"Yeah. She said that I will have to wear a t-shirt under them, although I don't know why," Norah said.

"I know why," Marshall said and then he laughed.

"Marshall that is not funny," Mary said as she backhanded him lightly on the bicep.

"What I thought you told her about everything that she is about to go through as a woman when she started to develop that area," Marshall said.

"Not everything, just what she is experiencing as a nine-year-old, she doesn't know how the kit and caboodle happens with how mommy's end up, with… with…., Mary said.

"With this," Marshall said as he put his hands as his wife's 6-month pregnant belly.

"Exactly," Mary said.

"Oh, and how is Claudette this evening?" Marshall asked and then bent down to kiss the bump and give it a little rub.

"Ugh gag me, I hate that name and I hate Alfonso even more for even suggesting that name," Mary said referring to Brandi's husband of 5 and ½ years. Whom Brandy met in Biology class at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, 7 years earlier. Both were studying for an undergraduate nursing degree.

"Ok we could name the baby Daphne, like I wanted too. Alfonso was just being helpful you know," Marshall said.

"Ugh, another gag me," Mary said.

"Are you two fighting again?" Norah asked.

"No," Marshall said.

"Yes," Mary said over him.

"Ok one of you is lying and it can't be Daddy Marshall," Norah said.

"Never princess Norah," Marshall said as he kissed the crown of his stepdaughter's beautiful medium length dirty blonde hair.

"Nora, why don't you go and try on the scrubs that aunt Brandy lent to you, so I know where to pin the pants up to fit you for tomorrow," Mary said.

"Yes mommy," Norah said as she quickly ran off into her room.

After she was gone Marshall asked, "so she really doesn't know where babies come from?"

"Well yes and no, she knows they come from mommy's tummy, but she doesn't know exactly how they get in there or how they get out," Mary said.

"Mary Elizabeth Shannon Mann, honestly," Marshall said.

"What she was three the last time we were in this position. She doesn't remember a whole lot and besides we didn't even get to tell her about baby Gabe and Caleb," Mary said referring to the two babies that she and Marshall lost 3 years ago and then again a year and a half ago.

"I know I know," Marshall said.

"I will tell her everything when the time is right, which should be," Mary said.

"Next year, unless of course if she doesn't develop more, early," Marshall said.

"Hey both me and Brandi developed breasts at 9 and 9 and a half, thank you very much," Mary said.

"Yeah well she's too young to be developing in that area," Marshall said while rolling his eyes.

"Yeah well she is a Shannon, so she is coming down the development track right on time," Mary said.

"Yeah well, I didn't get my testicles until I was at least 11 years old," Marshall said.

"Late bloomer huh?" Mary said.

"Ha," Marshall said, rolling his eyes.

"Besides, you are going to have to tell Spunky and if this one turns out to be a boy, the birds and the bees for guys, when it's that time," Mary said.

Marshall lifted his eyes towards heaven and said, "please let it be a girl."

"Mommy I need your help," Norah yelled from her bedroom.

"Ah duty calls will you watch dinner?" Mary asked.

"Yep," Marshall said.

"I'm coming, Norah, I need to stop in the bathroom first,'' Mary said.

"Okay mom," Norah said.

After Mary started to waddle her way out of the kitchen Marshall stirred the noodles and turned the hamburger that was on the stove over. He looked at the silver wedding band that Mary gave him 3 years ago as a promise of forever. He was a lucky guy. He had the greatest job, the greatest house, the greatest wife and the greatest kids. Stepdaughter included. He was sure an incredibly lucky man, now. Although over the last 11 years there were times that he didn't feel lucky.

After Stan left Albuquerque WITSEC for DC there was a lot more than what Marshall thought there would be in the job. Even though he kind of knew what he was doing, it took almost 6 months of nightly phone calls to Stan before Marshall felt comfortable in the job. Mary understood and did take a step back while Marshall was learning his new job, him and Abigail were planning there forever. Then a month after Marshall was finally comfortable, the priest for the Catholic Church that Abby and him, were going to get married in, got reassigned to Germany. It took a good year and 3 priests before they were comfortable in continuing to plan their wedding.

A month before the wedding was supposed to happen, Marshall got shot at in the right leg. Mary and Nora were on a well-deserved vacation in the black hills of South Dakota that had to be cut short, because Mary was the person with the most seniority after Marshall. Marshall was helping to settle a witness that had just been relocated to Albuquerque. Luckily for Marshall the perpetrator was shot in the legs by an undercover APD and was arrested and arraigned while in the hospital. So, he didn't have to be reassigned. But this event pushed Marshall and Abigail's wedding back another 3 months.

He was already ready to walk down the aisle and promise Abby forever when she got cold feet and called off the wedding on the day of the event. At least she wasn't in the wedding dress when she called it off. It wasn't easy for her and him to be together. With her being a detective and him with WITSEC. They were lucky that the undercover cop was in the right place at the right time. Because if he hadn't been Marshall would have been relocated for sure.

Abby wasn't sure if she could take that especially if she were to bear his children. Because who knows what would have happened and where she would have ended up if they were not together. It didn't help that Mary was going through some shit at the same time with Nora's father moving back to New Jersey to deal with his aging mother and Kenny getting a promotion and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. Thus, by ending their relationship that never really got off the ground. Needless to say; Mary was there for Marshall the night that his wedding was supposed to take place.

"Hey what are you crying in your beer for? As a matter of fact, you don't even drink beer," asked Mary.

"Yeah well I thought just once that I needed to make it a special occasion," Marshall said.

"Yeah that Abigail is some piece of work. I don't know what you saw in her," Mary said.

"Yep and that's it for me," Marshall said.

"Whoa whoa what are you talking about," Mary said.

"I said that if I weren't married by the time, I was 43 that I would not get married and now look at me, I am 43 and six months. I mean that is it for me," Marshall said.

"Oh, come on Marshall, you of all people believe in love. Whereas people like me are just waiting for the lover to screw them over," Mary said.

"Yeah well you have had 2 relationships no 3 and look where that got you," Marshall said.

"A whiny 3-year-old?" Mary asked.

"Ha you know what I mean," Marshall said.

"Okay first off Mark and I were high school idiots that got bounded up by one night of passion. Hence Nora. Number two Raphael could not help that he got injured, had to retire from baseball, went back to Texas and got married. Number 3 work got in the way with both Kenny and I, so it was mutual, and we didn't agree on how to raise the kids," Mary said.

"Yeah well just let me be for a while," Marshall said.

"Fine but you know where to find me, if you want to talk, since I don't have Norah tonight," Mary said.

"Marshall did know where to find Mary and he did find her at 130 in the morning at her home. He was inhibited and they got inhibited more together and one thing led to another. By the next morning Mary woke up on Marshall's chest, naked. In fact, they both were. There was no condom or foil anywhere.

"Shit," Mary said.

"Did you say something Mary?" Marshall asked in his half-inhibited state.

Mary did a quick inventory of when her last period was, she was in the clear from getting pregnant and she knew that Marshall didn't have anything, so she figured that she was good. But that was the last time she was to have sex with her former partner that was now actually her boss. Or so she thought.

Until 4 and half months later when she was sick and kept getting sicker.

No, I can't be, Mary thought as she looked at the results of the 5 pregnancy tests. All of them were positive. She made the phone call to her Ob/gynecologist to make an appointment and it was confirmed she was pregnant. When the doctor told her about how many weeks the baby looked to be, Mary was floored. There was only one person responsible: Marshall.

"Where in the hell have you been this morning?" Delia asked as Mary got to the office.

"None of your damn business, is Marshall here?" Mary asked.

"Yeah, he is in his office, why?" Delia asked.

"None of your damn business," Mary said as she walked to Marshall's office.

"Yeah thanks Stan. Yeah you too, bye." Marshall said as he hung up the phone with Stan in DC.

Mary tapped on the door before she said, "do you have a second to talk?"

"Yeah come on in, what's up?" Marshall said.

Mary walked into his office and proceeded to shut the door and blinds.

"This can't be good," Marshall said with his arms crossed.

"You remember how I have been so sick off and on for the last several months?" Mary asked.

"Yeah?" Marshall said as he stood up.

"I found out why today," Mary said.

"What is it? Cancer?" Marshall asked.

"I'm pregnant and it's yours," Mary said.
