Chapter 14: Lost Memories (part 1)

Just as we can have good experiences, we can have terrible experiences. Moments in which nobody would like to be. This ... is the case today. We can see Goby very worried in the hospital. He didn't look calm at all. At one point, a couple of adult guppies and a couple of children arrived. They were Deema's parents and the two twin brothers.

"Goby, we receive your messages. What happened?" Deema´s mother asked.

"Yeah, what happened to my girl?" Deema´s father added.

"Well…A car hit Deema. A very inconsiderate driver. She managed to push me out of the way. Didn't give her time to save herself" Goby was worried. Deema´s family gasped.

"(sigh) At least she was lucky you were there. You are a trustworthy boy. I appreciate you calling the ambulance" Deema´s father said.

"I hope she will be okay. The paramedics have not told me anything since we arrived" Goby explained. In this moment, some people arrived.

"Goby!"

"Guys! You are here" Goby felt a little relief.

"We know what happened" Molly said.

"How is she?" Oona asked worried.

"(sigh) I don't know. They didn't said anything about her status" Goby was sad.

"Patience! We must wait. It's the only thing we can do" Nonny said.

"Don't worry, friend. I think she will be okay" Gil tried to comfort Goby.

"I hope so" Goby sighted.

Several minutes of silence passed. The guppies were also concerned about Deema. She is their friend. They were trying to calm Goby and Deema's family a little. They appreciated that Deema had good friends who cared about her. Finally, a doctor appeared to give them new news.

"How is Deema, doctor?" Goby asked first. The rest followed him.

"Well….The situation was complicated for us since she had blows to the head. It was probably when she fell to the ground after she was hit by the car. But luckily, she is already stable. Only a few tests are missing and we will leave her to rest in the hospital and in a few days she will be able to leave" The doctor explained. Everybody was a little happy.

"Can we see her?" Deema´s father asked.

"Mmmm okay. Be quiet. I have to do the last test. Follow me" The doctor said. They went to Deema´s hospital room. She opened her eyes confused a little.

"Ugh….my head" She complained.

"Deema!" The guppies shouted. The doctor silenced them.

"Well….How do you feel, Deema?" The doctor asked.

"Deema? That is my name?" Deema asked confused. Bubble Guppies and Deema´s family started to worry.

"Ejem….Tell me about yourself" The doctor asked.

"Let me think!...Mmmmm….I´m Deema….Deema Wahler…..They are my parents and my little brothers" Deema tried very hard remembering those things.

"Do you have memories of your family?" The doctor asked.

"Mmmmm no. I only know that they are my parents and they are my younger brothers. But I don't remember things about them" Deema confessed "Doctor, can I ask something?"

"Yes, Deema?" The doctor said.

"Who are they?" Deema pointed to the guppies. They were already worried.

"Deema, you…..don't remember us?" Oona asked worried.

"No. I can't recognize you" Deema said.

"Do you really not remember us? Not even a little" Gil asked again.

"Sorry. I don't know who are you" Deema said.

"I do not like this. Deema seems to have a particular case of amnesia" The doctor said.

"Amnesia?" Oona asked.

"It is the loss of memory, for example, of facts, information and experiences" Nonny answered.

"Yeah...but….How she remember who is she?" Molly asked confused.

"In real life, people suffering from amnesia do not often forget their identity. In Deema's case, she only remembers her name and family. The rest seems to have been forgotten" The doctor explained.

"That means ... that she doesn't remember me" Goby said sadly. He is her boyfriend after all.

"Talk to her for a while. I will give you a few minutes for her to process little information" The doctor left the room for a while.

"Hello, Deema. We're your friends. I´m Molly. They are Gil, Goby, Oona and Nonny" Molly was the first one.

"Euh….Mmmmm...Nice to meet all of you" Deema said. They gang started to talk with her trying to not press her memory a lot. They recounted some things they had done to see if they could refresh her memory "Well...I don't remember anything. But….It all sounds like it was fun. You guys look nice"

"Deema….You really don't know who I am?" Goby asked sadly.

"Mmmm you are….Goby?...Right?" Deema answered confused.

"Yes, Deema…..I'm your boyfriend" Goby said. She looked confused.

"Really? Well...hehehe...Honestly you are very handsome. I wouldn't be surprised if you really were. All of this is confused" Deema was confused.

"Okay, guys. You must leave. She needs rest. I'll give you instructions outside" The doctor said. The guppies had no choice but to get out of there and wait for the medical indications with Deema's family. Everyone was hurt by that news. In fact, Oona started crying and Nonny comforted her.

"What will happen if Deema is not the same again? We've lost her" Oona said sobbing.

"We'll find a way. I know it" Nonny hugged her and kissed her forehead. Goby was sadder. But he held back the urge to cry. Molly and Gil was with him.

"Deema will be okay, Goby" Gil answered.

"You have to give her time to she starts remembering" Molly added. In this moment, the doctor came back.

"You are Deema's closest friends and family. So you will have the responsibility of putting her in a "family and friendly therapy", where you have to make her remember little by little her identity. But you shouldn't make her remember everything at once, that can harm her" The doctor explained. The rest nodded in silence "In a few days, she will be able to go home. But I would not recommend that she go out without being accompanied by someone".

After a time, Deema's family left the hospital, so did the guppies. The five teenagers met to discuss the situation.

"This is not good. Deema has lost most of her memories. Among them are the memories related to us" Molly started.

"What can we do?" Oona asked worried.

"I know! I know what we should do. We must give Deema another blow to the head. That will make Deema recover again" Gil said his dumb idea. In that moment, Molly hit Gil on the shoulder "Ouch, why did you do it?"

"Gil, that's a dumb idea. It only works in the movies" Moly answered him.

"Also, another blow to the head won't fix that. On the contrary, it could worsen the situation" Nonny added.

"In other words, we can't do anything for her" Goby said sadly.

"I never said that. I have a better idea. It will help for Deema therapy" Nonny said. Everyone gathered and listened to Nonny's plan.

"That may work. And it's better than Gil's idea" Molly said.

"So see you soon to do it" Oona said.

"...Yeah….Let's do this….For Deema" Goby finally said something.

"For Deema" The rest said.

Everything seemed fine for the guppies. There was a good opportunity to help Deema. However, the news from Deema managed to reach the ears of a certain person. Someone not very kind.

"So….Deema has amnesia. Hehehe. What a heartening plot twist for me! It's the perfect opportunity to make Goby pay for what he did to me. Deema will be mine" It was James with a evil smile. He went to the hospital for a visit. He said he was a friend of Deema's so they would let him hang out. Deema was watching a little TV while she was bored.

"Excuse me, Deema. Somebody wants you. He said he is a friend of you" The doctor said.

"Hello, darling. Are you okay? I was very worried" James said worried.

"Oh...Hi! Who are you?" Deema asked.

"I´m James. Doesn't that sound familiar?" James asked.

"James?...Mmmmm...James….Oh….James! Yes, I remember you. You are a friend of mine from school, right?" Deema hardly remembered that.

"And ... what else do you remember about me?" James asked with curiosity.

"Okay….Mmmmm….You are supposed to be a good actor and we are also very close friends" Deema said.

"(So she doesn't remember the incident with Goby. It's perfect for me. Time to play around with her confused memories hehehe)" Jame thought "Ejem...Deema, darling….I want to refresh your memory a little" And so, James returns to his old ways, altering Deema's memories. Who knows what he might be saying. And this time, the guppies will have a hard time.
