I'll Come Back for You
Starting this off by saying I do not own the show Criminal Minds, any of the characters, or plotlines in the show. I am just merely a very big fan. I also do not own the song I'll Come Back for You by Max Schneider.
This story is based on the song I'll Come Back for You by Max Schneider. Lyrics are in italics.
Pairing: JJ and Emily
I'll Come Back for You. Back Someday for you.
Emily has always known that JJ was the woman of her dreams. Years and many, many complications passed and yet Emily still knew that JJ was the one for her. Being an out and proud lesbian on the most successful unit of the FBI brought a lot of pressure onto her shoulders and some of that pressure came from being in love with not only her coworker but also her best friend in the whole world. Her life has never been simple, and this just makes it a whole lot more complicated.
JJ took some time to figure out that she was in love with Emily, however. JJ has always known that she likes and finds both men and women attractive, but she did not count on one of those men getting her pregnant and moving from New Orleans to DC just to be together. And she definitely didn't count on one of those women being her best friend and coworker who broke her own heart to allow JJ to have a picture-perfect family. Even though JJ chose Will and had gotten married to him and had two amazing, sweet, wonderful little boys with him, her heart always tugs her back to Emily. No matter what.
And the distance could kill us or make us strong.
Emily sat there at JJ's wedding, watching as JJ vowed eternity to Will. Emily watched Henry's little eyes light up as his mommy and daddy kissed. She danced with her team and said her goodbyes. London was her safety away from the heartache, she did not have to pretend she was happy and not heartbroken every minute of her life in London. But you see that's the thing about love, no matter where you go, what you do, and what you try to focus on to forget the heartbreak, it still follows you.
It ain't right to be apart from you for so long. And this world is out to get us, but baby don't be jealous cause I'll come back for you.
That's how Emily found herself on a jet headed to DC briefing herself on the case while talking with Hotch and the team about JJ's abduction. JJ was missing and Emily would be damned if she was not the one to rescue her. Interpol could wait, JJ needed her. When the jet landed, she headed straight for Quantico to go over everything with the team. Her heart pounding with each step she took then she heard voices and that word fall from two familiar mouths
"Blackbird what does that mean?" Kevin asked confused
"I have no idea" Garcia said shaking her head.
Emily made herself known then "It's JJ". Garcia ran and hugged Emily. Getting to work right away with the team they tracked JJ down. Emily ran to her and untied her. When they turned their backs, JJ took off chasing her torturer to the roof, Emily following right on her heels.
After the fight they hugged each other tight and Emily whispered "I'll always come back for you" right before they were separated so that Will could hug JJ. They shared a look as Reid rubbed Emily's back in understanding. See that's the thing about love, even when you both feel it, sometimes the timing never works out and causes a love to be lost in thin air and that is how Emily is feeling as she sits and watches the woman she loves be hugged by her husband from across the bar. She jokes and laughs with the team, but they can all individually see the pain hiding behind her eyes as she watches them. More like watches her.
They can see her forcing the pain and heartbreak down into another lockbox of her heart, they can see the walls building up taller and stronger as she sips her drink and half listens to the stories they are telling, and the worst part? They see that happening not only with Emily but also with JJ.
"How long do we have?" JJ asks Emily as they stand next to each other in the group.
Emily checks her watch and smiles sadly "Six hours."
Penelope pouts sadly "We just got you back." Emily matches her pout and nods
"I know, but I'll always come back for you all." Emily says as she hugs Penelope and stares right at JJ.
And while I'm away, my heart will stay right here with you
They all sit and talk for a few more hours and then Emily finds herself sitting in a cab headed to the airport and headed back to London alone, sad, and once again heartbroken. She looks at her phone hoping for a message from the woman of her dreams but sadly nothing but messages from her friends and family wishing her safe travels.
From: Spencer- Have a safe flight Em, we love you.
From: Rossi- Safe travels my girl, visit again soon.
From: Penelope- Have a safe trip my fine furry friend. I love you.
From: Hotch- Good luck in London Emily, come back anytime, there is always a spot for you at the BAU.
Emily smiles and replies to the messages as she steps out of the cab grabbing her luggage and walking towards security and her gate to board the jet back to England. As she is getting to her gate, she hears it. Her name falling from those angelic lips.
"Emily! Emily wait! Emily!" JJ yells racing towards Emily.
Emily whips around and races towards JJ.
JJ grabs Emily and says, "Don't leave, you don't have to come back for me if you stay with me."
Emily grins and smiles at JJ and wraps her arms around her waist. JJ smiles and leans in and their lips touch for the first time. They kiss and Emily pulls back slowly and says "What about Will and the kids? And our jobs?"
JJ smiles "We'll figure it out, just stay okay?"
Emily nods and knew it was always smart to come back for JJ.
