Bio:
A lifelong fan of pro wrestling, August Ortiz was born in Atlanta, the son of a school teacher and migrant construction worker. Although he was privileged and sheltered, he fell into a bad scene as a teenager. His dad got him into the school amatuer wrestling team at sixteen and that's when he discovered professional wrestling. It changed his life and at eighteen, August became straight edge and dedicated his life to physical wellness and becoming a pro wrestler.
He became a personal trainer and dietician to put himself through wrestling school. Connections were made when he helped train other wrestlers on diet and yoga therapy in exchange for lessons and opportunity. He started off as a TNA original at the age of 20 as a X division superstar and after hard work he finally got a shot at the WWE on the FCW developmental brand.
At FCW, he cemented his gimmick as the cult leader, "Christian Saint". He debuted on Smackdown in 2011 and immediately shot to the top thanks to a Paul Heyman written storyline where he through manipulation, brainwashed and attacked wrestlers who he deemed unworthy because of their personal life choices. His first program was Jeff Hardy and through Jeff he met his college crush and current wife Amy Dumas, aka Lita.
He was one of the few people who thrived during the dark ages of the WWE as he and his "Clergy" went ran Smackdown, including almost retiring Undertaker, actually retiring Edge, and having both the feud and the match of the year with Randy Orton.
Here is his story.
Chapter 1: Talk Is Jericho
August, off tv for a kayfabe injury, decided to spend a couple hours helping his friend and old mentor Chris Jericho who'd just started a new podcast. At first, he questioned even appearing outside of his character at all. The fans truly believed August lived the Saint Christian gimmick and he liked it that way. The hate didn't bother him one bit but he felt he owed it to Chris who always supported his career.
Jericho: Thanks for tuning into the fifth episode of the Talk Is Jericho here on Podcast One. If you're tuning in, you're in for a treat because our guest today is one of the most talented and most HATED men on the current WWE roster. He is the 4 time WWE Champion, 2 time Tag Team Champion, and 3 time United States Champion, Saint Christian.
Jericho played the canned clapping sound and in his gimmick voice August spoke his catch phrase, "You Are Not Worthy!"
Jericho: I hope he doesn't DDT me but I think its important to say August Ortiz, the man, forget the gimmick, is one of the coolest guys on the planet. Thanks again brother for doing the show.
August: Ahh Man, you're breaking kayfabe over here. People are standing outside with rotten tomatoes. You're breaking their hearts.
Jericho: They'll get over it. Brother we've known each other for about fifteen years right? Since your NWA TNA days. So much has happened since then but I have to say, you're still that guy you were all the way back then. That's not common. With all you're success, how have you not gotten the big head.
August: Family. Friends. My Wife man. They all keep me in check. Im blessed to have the system I do.
Jericho: Your wife is Amy Dumas. The world knows her as Lita. I remember when you have her poster up in your van.
August: My van! You mean my apartment.
Jericho: For those of you that dont know. You used to live in your van to save money.
August: Yeah it was an old Uhaul van I bought at an auction. I had an air mattress, a gallon of water, and a poster of Lita in the back. Yeah.
Jericho: And you married her. You got the girl.
August: I got the girl and I feel like the luckiest man on the planet. Amy really is the coolest. She gets me you know, with all my astrology and alien talk and veganism, she just gets me. When shit gets real she's there.
Jericho: How long have you been on the main roster?
August: Almost ten years.
Jericho: So not long. You've got maybe another ten years in you.
August: No way man. No way. I'm not a lifer.
Jericho:What?
August: Yeah, people are always shocked by that. I love the craft and I love the energy but I'm not a lifer. I don't see myself doing this when i'm forty. Eventually I want to move behind the camera and I don't know, move to Hawaii with Amy and our dogs.
Jericho: But for now. Where do you see yourself when you return to Smackdown.
August: You know how the business is. I can say I'm going to jump the barricade and whip Bray Wyatt's ass but I might turn up as the gobbledy gooker.
Jericho: It happened to me.
August: I know!
August hung up with Jericho and went back to lounging around his house with his dogs. Amy was off in California working on the project she had with her friends Gail Kim and Christy Hemme. It was just a lazy day for him before his phone rang. His friend Jeff Hardy called up and August was a little shocked. He hadn't talked to Jeff since Jeff got out of rehab after his TNA Sting incident.
"Jeff, brother is cool to hear from you man. How's life?"
Jeff knew what August meant and he knew August wouldn't judge him. August had been very upfront with the mistakes he made as a kid Jeff felt August understood him.
"I'm good. One step at a time you know. I'm spending my time with my girls man. Trying to stay out of trouble."
"Good to hear."
"So I called for a reason brother. Keep this between us but Matt and I have been talking to Vince and he wants us to come back to the company."
Augusts' stomach soured. Matt Hardy and his brat of a wife were like the rash that never went away. He just could not understand how people who were married with three kids could be so obsessed with other people. They'd clashed on numerous occasions. August knew Matt was low key still into Amy, even after fifteen years, but the man was borderline obsessive and Reby was just a problem; a loud, rude, problem.
"That's cool."
"I just wanted to give you the heads up because I know how Matt can be, and I know Reby has a mouth on her so I just wanted to give you and Amy the heads up."
"I appreciate it."
"Yeah." There was a pause and August tried to process the stress he knew was coming. "I guess I'll see you in a couple months."
"Looking forward to it."
