Chapter One
It was still very late and they hadn't gotten a lot of sleep, so it was decided that Sirius would set up their tent about ten miles outside of the town the Unspeakables had built. Exhausted as they were though they decided to have Dobby elf-pop them to their new campsite instead of walking so far. After setting up their new temporary home, they gathered in front of the tent fireplace and sat on the couch to mirror call their family on Ginny's Mirror.
Ginny had managed to get ahold of her brother, Charlie and give him a quick run-down on what had happened to her with Sirius explaining where she couldn't and Ana reassuring him that they would look out for Ginny in her family's absence. Ginny told him to let the rest of the family and Remus know what was going on and that they would speak to them again in the morning after they had slept.
After that they had gone to bed, Ginny to her own room and Ana had curled up in her godfathers' bed with him. She hadn't wanted to be too far away from him after everything she had been forced to go through that night. This wasn't the first time she had crawled into her godfathers' bed either; she occasionally had nightmares of her life with the Dursleys, her adventures at school and the final battle. Sirius had made it a point when she first did it that he had no issues chasing away her nightmares if she needed him to and he would hardly turn her away now.
Thankfully all three seemed to be too exhausted to even have nightmares so they were bright eyed and ready to get the day started the next morning. Ana had made breakfast on autopilot that morning, absentmindedly falling into her old habits learned at the Dursleys, as she thought of her new situation.
After the way her life had turned out in Hogwarts with one new adventure after another she had grown pretty use to surprises being thrown her way, but this?! The hell she supposed to do now?! It wasn't like she had made any plans for her future, especially as she hadn't known if she would survive the war, but she at least thought that if she did survive she would be able to decide what to do with her life. She had no idea what she would've done with her life but she didn't think this would end up being it. She had absolutely no clue on how to get through the pregnancy, the labor or raising the kids.
The only experience she had with adults parenting were the Dursley's and the Weasley's; the first of which had belittled, neglected, starved, and abused one child and over praised, over fed, and under disciplined the other child; and the second family absolutely loved all seven of their children, but had issues keeping track of all of them and clearly played favorites when it came to their children.
She didn't want to be anything like the Dursley's as a parent, but she also didn't want her children to resent her because she had so many kids she couldn't keep track of them. She wasn't going to get a choice on how many children she had but she did have a choice on how she raised them and how she treated them.
No matter what she promised herself that she would love all of her children and that she would raise them as best as she could and she would hold herself to that promise by learning everything she could about raising healthy children.
Before any of that though she would have to get through her pregnancy safely, she was just about to turn sixteen and she wasn't entirely certain if she could carry safely as she was. She wasn't even aware of how magical birth went, if they used potions or spells. Was that even safe for babies? Okay now she was just freaking out. She needed to just take everything one day at a time.
Today they needed to figure out a plan. They were trapped in a one way barrier and the only way they could access the outside world was through Mirror Calling and their Instant Mailboxes that could only transport inanimate things. Still 4000 miles across is a lot of land, America was estimated to be less than three thousand miles across, at this point Atlantis was its own continent. She wondered if the Unspeakables would track them through the land if they didn't settle down in one of their preset houses. They've already forcibly impregnated her for the rest of her fertile life, would they really hunt her down throughout the land they've trapped them in if she didn't fall in line with their plan like the rest of those women did?
No real way to know that unless she tried, after all they've done to her already they can't really kill her; they need her to help repopulate the magical society. Really the worst they could do is drag her back and so long as she continually falls pregnant and gives birth to children then they shouldn't care about where she does it, after all why else would they spend nearly three hundred years building and warding over 4000 miles worth of land. The Unspeakables had to realize that not all of the witches that they forced through the barrier would completely comply with their plans. Their created town had to just be an option; she couldn't see the Unspeakables making such a mistake after how thorough they've been. She'd talk to Sirius and Ginny about it later when discussing a plan of action.
"Are you alright, Ana?" Sirius' hoarse voice broke through her thought process and she found herself still sitting at the breakfast table, fork scraping against an empty plate.
She sighed, shrugging, "I'm doing the best I can be, but I've never liked being unprepared or blindsided by surprises before. Being so close to the Unspeakable City is setting off my nerves and making me feel as if we're being watched and as they've employed house elves, it's completely possible that we are being watched. So whatever we end up doing, I vote we get as far away from this city as possible."
"I agree." Ginny piped off from the kitchen sink. She was using magic to clean the dishes from breakfast and Ana made a note to ask her to teach her that later as she watched her empty plate and fork float into the sink and start cleaning itself. That was going to come in handy, unless she managed to get some house elves through the Atlantis Barrier.
Ana had never been the type of person to take the lazy way out of things by constantly having a house elf do things for her, but taking the lazy way and making things easier for yourself when there is too much for you to do by yourself is two different things. So she had no issues finding out if they could manage to get house elves through the barrier, they were going to need them. Speaking of house elves; didn't they receive a catalog about them from the goblins?
Ana took a deep breath, watching Ginny do the same and looking over at Sirius, she found him giving her an encouraging nod. Looking at Ginny again, she nodded, "Alright let's get started. Call your brother, Ginny. He should have had enough time to gather your family and Remus."
Ginny did as she asked and then placed the mirror on the table for all to see. Within seconds Molly Weasley was sobbing through the mirror, "Ginny! Ginny are you alright? Are you hurt?"
Ginny snorted, "To be honest, I'm pissed off."
"Ginny!" Molly sounded scandalized.
Ginny was immediately irate, "I'll use whatever language I bloody well want damn it! My entire future career plans just went down the damn drain and I've been turned into a bloody broodmare. I'll be damned if I let anyone else restrict me any further, much less to appease someone else's delicate sensibilities."
Ana smirked, as Molly tried to admonish her daughter about her language and being a proper lady, but Ginny had already had far too much taken from her and her father and brothers agreed and came to her defense. Ginny had planned on being a professional quidditch player, that dream was completely shot even if she did manage to get past the barrier purely because of her condition. Unlike Ana she had dreams before this mess, so she couldn't be blamed for her anger or her inability to tolerate any further censoring of her personality or her free will.
The argument continued for a good five minutes before Molly made a comment about coming through; whether that was to micromanage her daughter's life or to help them raise their yet-to-be-born children, they didn't find out because Ana finally blew up.
"Mrs. Weasley, coming through the Barrier of Atlantis means subjecting yourself to having half of your magical core ripped in half and bound to your reproductive system and giving birth to innumerable children of men you've possibly never even met or even men you absolutely hate. Do you really think you want that, Mrs. Weasley? Do you think we do?" Fury was blazing in Ana's eyes. She was completely done with this woman's inability to face the actual problem; that they had their entire lives turned on their heads and were being forced to constantly fall pregnant with children from who knows what man and would now spend the rest of their lives raising and caring for said children. "If you don't have anything useful to say for the current situation, move over and let someone else speak. We don't have time to deal with your irrational hysteria, when we have to deal with our own issues here."
Ana ignored Molly's outraged expression and turned to look at Remus, "A lot of our friends are here as well. Hermione Granger and Tracy Davis are being watched over by Nymphadora Tanks; Hannah Abbott is being taken care of by Madam Bones and her niece; and Astoria Greengrass was taken in by Mr. Lovegood and his daughter. The Zabini, Nott, and the Malfoy's are here as well. They've all got contacts with their families or the outside world so they can take care of themselves. What we need to focus on is our own problems."
She took a breath and then continued, she was far too done with talking over an issue rather than dealing with it, "The good news is we have all of our emergency supplies, so we won't starve. We have access to instant mailboxes with Gringotts and updating catalogs. We also have more than enough supplies to build our own farm to keep us from starving in the future, so we don't have to depend on the supermarket the Unspeakables built nor do we need to depend on escaping Atlantis anytime soon. We've got copies of the Black Library and hundreds of how-to guides that can help us with surviving any situation, but we didn't exactly expect repopulating the Wizarding Society to be the situation we'd be finding ourselves in."
Ginny snorted, "Yeah, this bullshit came out of left field. I think you can be forgiven for not predicting something like this, Ana."
Sirius and Remus chuckled, and Ana snickered, glad that some amusement could be found in their situation, "Atlantis is apparently twenty thousand feet below the middle of the Pacific Ocean, so any tampering with the barrier could send the entire ocean down on us, so it's best not to even touch that and that means that escaping isn't really an option without further research. The Unspeakables have built a city down here that's being run by house elves and while I don't have an issue with house elves, those house elves are bound to the Unspeakables and could have further orders. This island is 4000 miles across in any direction, so my theory is that the Unspeakables made it so big because they expected some of the witches to set out on their own or they were just thinking long term and were preparing space for the future children. Either way I don't think they'll hunt us down if we venture away from their prebuilt city, so long as we don't fiddle around with the magical procedure they forced us through."
Sirius nodded, "Yeah that sounds about right. The worst they could do is track us down and force us back into their city, so I think we're safe to head for the borders. The farm idea isn't a bad idea either if we had the man power to watch over it. With you and Ginny pregnant, that leaves me and Dobby to do it by ourselves and we can't manage that on our own without leaving you two unprotected for long periods of time and that's not exactly a good idea with your condition."
"Right I've actually already thought of that. Dobby's already proven that house elves can come through the barrier with enough power; they just can't get back out. One of the catalogs we received from the goblins was Magical Creatures for Hired Help; house elves are categorized by their specialty in it and apparently they can bind themselves to the magical signature the goblins have of you on file once you buy them." Ana mentioned, helpfully.
Bill spoke up from the mirror then, "I know the catalog you're talking about, Ana. The goblins are the ones who actually created the house elves. They started out as flesh golems but once they were bound to a creature with magic; goblin or wizard, they evolved into magical living beings by stealing a portion of their magic. Of course once the magical government found out they steal a portion of your magic to live, they outlawed them from any other position that wasn't servant. Now they're not so much as created as they are bred and taught by the goblins. There should be a page in the catalog where you can actually customize your house elf's specialties; those are expensive and won't usually be ready for a good year. Also make sure you only order one at a time, Ana, in your condition and only having access to half of your magical core, we don't know how you'll react to any further bindings. The first binding to a house elf is the worst in that it takes a lot of magical power but they don't actually bind themselves to your magical core so it's a one-time only thing."
"Huh, did you ever tell Hermione this?" Ana asked a bit stunned at the information. She hadn't been aware of the house elves origins, but she at least better understood the issues magicals had with them now; magicals abhorred anything with the ability to steal their magic because their magic was embedded into everything they were, so forcing them into being servants because they stole their precious magic actually sounded like something the magical world would do. Still wasn't a reason to abuse them though, it wasn't like they had chosen to be born like that.
Bill snorted in amusement through the mirror, his dark blue eyes dancing in mirth, "Not on your life, I wasn't touching that issue with a ten foot pole anywhere near that girl. For someone so smart, Hermione could be quite irrational sometimes."
Ana and Ginny snickered. Sirius smirked and shook his head, "Alright so you've been updated on what's going on. I'll be spelling the vanity mirrors in the girls' room if you want to speak with them privately. We've got a basic idea of a plan now; the girls want to get further away from this town the Unspeakables built so we'll be travelling most of the day during the week. Some of the travelling will probably be by Dobby express but since he's actually bound to Ana and not me we'll mostly stick to horseback or hell I can even see about putting together some type of carriage so the girls will be more comfortable with traveling so long a distance. Molly, I'll set the girls up with healer house elves so their condition can be monitored so don't worry so much they'll be fine. If you guys want to come through to help out, we'll hardly turn you away but be aware once in you can't get back out. If you want to come through Molly, I suggest you think long and hard about it first and if you still want to come through you need to warn us first so we can at least plan for you. There is far too much going on right now for any more surprises."
Remus spoke up then, "Actually I'm going to join you guys. There's not much here for me anyway. I'll be better use with you guys. I'll spend the next week getting myself packed up to move there with you guys so if you can think of anything you need within the muggle world or elsewhere then let me know and I'll bring it with me when I come through."
Ana smiled widely, "Alright but be aware that most of it will probably be muggle baby ware, maternity catalogs, baby catalogs or bulk shopping. We will make sure to compensate you though. Anything else we need we can just send a letter through the instant mailbox to the goblins and they'll figure out what to do for a price of course."
Sirius piped up before they ended the call, "See if you can find any spell books on constructing magical buildings and books on baby proofing and pregnancy proofing magical buildings."
After the call ended, Sirius explained his reasoning, "Lily would always complain about climbing the stairs when she was more heavily pregnant. We'll see if we can't make things a little easier on you two. I'm sure I saw something in the Black Library that could help but I don't remember what book it was so it might take me some time to find it. This tent has two more bedrooms that can be used as nurseries, but we can't really raise a lot of children in a tent so we'll have to build a house for the both of you. It's a lot quicker with magic but it still takes a lot of time and since we'll be building it ourselves, we can make sure it's done to your specifications, so you two can look into home designing in your free time as well."
Ana and Ginny both grinned at each other and as they separated to get dressed into warm and comfortable riding gear, Ana knew that they'd be alright. No doubt they'd have a lot of breakdowns in the future but so long as they stayed together they'd be fine.
