"Are you sure you want to do this?" Jasper asks Luka hesitantly standing in front of a Sweet on America candy store. The exact one that Sally Jackson worked.

They were both wearing the other pair of clothes they had saved for occasions like this not wanting to cause unnecessary attention. Jasper didn't want him to do this unless he was absolutely ready.

"I'm sure. I need to meet her,"Luka says softly, not taking his eyes off of the store,"Even if she can't know who we are."

"Well it is good to practice talking with people from the past that we have actual connections with," Jasper agrees knowing full well she didn't have the heart to stop her friend from having this opportunity. If she had the chance to see any of her family she would want to.

Plus it really was a chance to practice acting normal with people from the past who they knew or at least knew of. She just hoped that they would regret this.

Luka stood frozen for a moment before finally gaining the courage to step forward.

The two twelve year olds both freeze at the smell of the store as they step into the building. While both kids had been in the past for a week neither of them had a chance to get candy as they were saving as much money for the city as they could. The junk food of the past had to wait at least until now.

"We can spend ten dollars," Luka reminds Jasper.

They had decided to pull ten dollars from the money they had for this store, just this once. Using the excuse that they couldn't just walk in and talk to Sally Jackson then walk out without buying anything. It would seem too suspicious.

They walked around the store Luka kept glancing every so often to the register where Sally Jackson was ringing up a customer. Jasper had to push Luka forward more than once in order to not cause suspicion.

"Just go over and ask her how much this is," Jaspers says grabbing a stray candy bar from the shelf after having to grab Luka's attention for the fifth time from the women,"Tell her it was in the wrong spot, and want to know the price."

When Luka didn't move Jasper rolled her eyes foundly, and wrapped his hand around the candy bar, once again pushing him forward.

"Hello," Luka says hesitantly to Sally after trying to clear his throat.

"Can I help you?" She asks kindly, looking at him patiently when he froze.

"Um...yes, ah,"Luka says stumbling over his words before holding out the chocolate bar stiffly,"I found this in the wrong spot...and I was wondering if you could...um.. Tell me the price?"

"Of course," She said, kindly smiling softly grabbing the chocolate bar from the nervous Luka.

"It's a dollar eighty," Sally answers him holding the bar out. Luka stares at the stretched out hand not moving his throat thick with emotion.

"There you are!" Jasper calls out from behind Luka making him snap out of his trace,"Did you find out the price?"

Jasper walks up next to him, and places some other treats down to be scanned. Jasper looks over at Sally with a charming smile.

"Sorry about him,Ma'am. He is not good at talking to strangers," Jasper says, feeling bad for lying to someone everyone describes as such an amazing person, but she needed to excuse Luka's weird behavior before he slipped.

Not that Jasper blamed him. She wasn't even really related to Sally Jackson like Luka, and while neither of them ever had the chance to meet her since she had died soon after the war went bad even Jasper could feel her throat tightening slightly.

They knew of this person. Sally Jackson was a real person who was alive and well at this time, and it was up to the two tweens to keep her alive. If they messed up, Sally's blood would be on nobody's hands but their own. The true reality of the situation hit twice as hard as originally intended. It put a lot more pressure on their shoulders then before.

"We'll get the bar, ma'am, and the rest of this," Jasper tells her, pulling out what her dad used to call the 'texas charm', a smile never leaving her face.

"Thank you for shopping here. Have a nice day," Sally tells them, handing them the bag of candy.

"Thank you," Luka says sincerely to her, finally recovering his eyes staring straight into hers,"It was nice meeting you."

Before Sally could question them both of them as fast as they could without seeming like they were hiding anything.

"You okay?" Jasper asks an hour later when they back at a hide out they had decided to stay in for the time being. It was an old but sturdy building that had still been around in their future. Both were dressed back into their grubby torn clothes they had arrived in.

They were both sitting on old blanket backs leaning against a wall. In front of them laid a makeshift table that held the junk food, an open hot dog package, and a bunch of random ends and odds Jasper had found to mess with.

"I don't know," Luka whispers back honestly, turning his head, keeping it on the wall, his eyes swimming with emotion,"It was harder than I thought. If I can't even talk to someone I never met then how can I manage to talk to my parents or anyone else we use to know or even about without breaking?"

"I don't know,"She answers back just as softly wishing she had the answers grabbing his hand,"I do know however that You aren't alone. You have me, and I'm not leaving you alone. It's a part of the best friend rule."

"Is it now?" Luak with a small mile making her smile back glad she got the reaction she wanted.

"Of course,"She replies in mock surprise,"You didn't know. It's right under the one that says i'm better than you."

"Are not."

"Are too."

"I'm older," He argues playfully.

"Yes, but i'm better," She says cheekily,"After all, I'm a flaming hot Valdez."

Luka rolls his eyes before shoving her shoulder playfully. She pushes him back harder in retaliation. Before they knew it they were in a full on brawl weapons pulled out smiles lighting their face.

Despite her dad never being the best in battle before the war turned bad, Jasper had learned quite early on to be able to hold her own. Both were good with their weapons even with the lack of conventual training. They were pretty evenly matched as they grew up training with each other when they could.

"Got you, ocean breath," Jasper taunts Dagger to his neck, pinning Luka to the ground. With renewed strength he pushes her off he quickly gets the upper hand again.

"I don't think you do, Bolts for brains," He replied smirking. Jasper glares, and pushes him away before calling for stop.

They finish the night off with some candy, and a small squabble over who had actually won the fight. Knowing what was to come would be harder than before.

"Do you see him?" Luka asks her once more a few days later.

"No...I told you i'll tell you if I see...wait, there he is!" Jasper answers with a gasp binoculars to her face.

"Really, where?" Luka asks, snatching the binoculars from her.

"Next to the school bus," She replies with a glare, but she doesn't try to get them back.

"Well, Jazzy, looks like we're crashing a field trip," Luka with a bright smile handing her the binoculars.

"Don't call me, Jazzy," She snaps half-heartedly, placing them in the bag,"Let's go."
