Prologue:

A young Astrid is standing up on the bow of a ship. She was humming a tune to herself. She started to sing. "Drink up me hearties yo ho! Yo ho, yo ho a pirate's life for me. We extort, we pi-"

Gobber appeared from behind her. He put a finger up to his mouth, signalling for her to be quiet. "Quiet, young miss! Cursed pirates sail these waters. You don't want to bring them down on us, now, do ya?

Astrid looked up to Gobber and pouted.

"Ah-uh young miss, that doesn't work on me". Gobber teased.

Lieutenant Eret walked up from behind Gobber. He put a hand on his shoulder. "Gobber, that will do!"

Gobber looked at his captain. "She was singing about pirates. Bad luck to be singing about pirates with us mired in this unnatural fog. Mark my words."

Eret rolled his eyes. "Consider them marked. Now, be on your way."

"Aye, Lieutenant". As Gobber was starting to leave, Astrid decided to speak up.

"I think it would be rather exciting to meet a pirate."

Eret eyed Astrid with a disapproving look. "Think again, Miss Hofferson. Pirates are nothing but Vile and disgusting creatures. I intend to see to it that any man who sails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deserves. A short drop and a sudden stop."

Astrid looked at the Lieutenant with widened eyes.

Astrid's father, Governor Hofferson, came up from behind Eret after overhearing their 'conversation'.

"Um, Lieutenant Eret...".

As soon as Eret saw his superior, he straightened his back and cleared his voice.

"Yes sir?"

General Hofferson cleared his throat. "I appreciate your excitement over the matter, but, uh, I'm concerned about the effect this subject will have upon my daughter.

Eret looked down and bowed his head. "My apologies, Governor."

Astrid looked up at her father, and tug on his shirt. "Actually, I find it very fascinating".

"That's what worries me, daughter."

At the corner of her eye, Astrid sees something in the water. As she took a closer look, she realised that there was a boy, probably her age floating on a piece of wreckage!

She tug on her fathers shirt to get his attention. She pointed in the direction of the wreckage. "Look, father! There's someone in the water!"

Eret looked at where Astrid was pointing. As soon as he saw the boy, he started to order the men.

"Man overboard! Fetch the hook and Haul him aboard!"

As soon as the men had hauled the boy up onto the ship, Eret went to check the boy.

"He's still breathing". He noted.

Gobber spotted a burning ship. "Mary, mother of God!"

Astrid's father overheard Gobber. As soon as he saw the burning ship, he asked. "What happened here?"

Gobber started to speak up. "Everyone know's what happened. Pirates."

Governor Hofferson shook his head. "There's no proof of that. It was probably an accident."

He kneeled down until he was at Astrid's height. "Astrid, i want you to look after that boy. He'll be in your care, okay?"

Astrid nodded her head.

"Good girl".

Astrid walked up to the boy, and started to observe him. She noticed that the boy had freckles dotted around his face and had shaggy auburn hair.

She started to shake him lightly.

The boy opened his eyes slowly. They were green, she had never seen green coloured eyes before.

He looked confused and started to look around.

His eyes stopped moving when he saw Astrid.

Astrid smiled at the boy, not wanting to scare him. "My name is Astrid".

The boy stared up at her. "H-H Henry".

He suddenly got up. Startling Astrid, and started to run towards the side of the ship.

Astrid called out to him. "No! Wait!"

It was too late.

Henry jumped off the ship. A loud splash could be heard a second later.

Governor Hofferson and Lieutenant Eret ran up to her. They noticed that the boy was gone.

"What was that sound? Where did the boy go?" Astrid's dad asked her.

Astrid didn't respond, only raising her hand and pointing to the ocean.

Governor Hofferson starting running to the side of the ship, but was stopped by Eret.

"Sir, with all due respect, if that boy dove into the ocean, he obviously didn't wan't to be here."

"He's still a kid!" He struggled in Eret's grip.

As the two men were arguing, Astrid saw something shining in the corner of her eye.

There, lying on the ground, was a medallion.

She walked over to it, picket it up, and started to examine it. It had a skull engraving on it.

'He's a pirate' She realised.

Astrid smilled, and hid the medallion in her pocket.

'Henry...'
