three.
Kim.
Adam could not believe himself. Kim is right in front of him. He is looking at Kim. The woman that left him two months ago. The woman who he has not seen or heard from in two months. The woman he loved. That he still loves.
Adam's mind was running a mile a minute.
Kim. Is that really Kim? Oh my god it really is. What the hell? Why is she here? How can she be here? Why hasn't she called me? Reached out to me? Where has she been all this time? She looks good. Stop it Adam. Shut up. Do I look okay? Does she think I look okay? God dammit, shut up Adam. Look at her eyes. They seem tired. What has she been up to? What has she been doing all this time? She looks shocked. Of course she's shocked, Adam, so are you. Get it together. Focus. She probably wasn't expecting to see you. Duh, Adam. She looks scared. Why? Am I that bad-looking? I mean I know I'm pretty tired too but — shut up, Adam. What does she not want me to know? What is she hiding? Well, she looks pretty. She looks pissed. She looks pretty pissed.
Adam couldn't help looking at Kim. Noticing her features. Memorizing every detail. Even though she had sunglasses on, he could tell how tired she was. By the slightly disheveled hair, the no-makeup look, and her body stance. Yet, that didn't make Kim any less attractive to him. He still thought Kim was beautiful. Her imperfections just showed to him how her gorgeous her raw beauty is.
Adam had no words, he was frozen in his spot, at the door of the coffee shop. What seemed like an eternity to him was actually a matter of seconds. And all he could manage to do was close his eyes and process what just happened.
Get it together, Adam. Just talk to her. Ask her how she is. Ask her where she's been. Just tell her. Tell her that you miss her. That you're okay. That she'll be okay. Just tell her how you really feel.
Adam shook his head and brought himself back to reality. Once he finally snapped out of his running thoughts and mustered up the courage to speak, he opened his eyes and looked down to an empty doorway.
Kim.
She's gone.
Adam frantically looked in the coffee shop and saw that she wasn't there. He then turned and looked down the busy sidewalk that was filled with hurrying bystanders. He looked over the crowd of people and saw the ball cap Kim was wearing a few feet ahead.
She left. Without saying anything. She left me. Again.
Adam's once heavy, glued stance was now jogging down the sidewalk. He tried his best to catch up to Kim, narrowing his eyes on that ball cap and pushing past people, but as he was about to round the block to follow her, his phone went off.
Really?! Great timing.
Adam kept his eye on Kim until the last second and reluctantly, he took his phone out and read the incoming message.
one text message from Kevin Atwater*
Hurry up bro. Footage just got approved. Being sent in a few minutes.
Adam sighed. He looked back up only to realize that Kim was no where to be seen. She was lost in the wave of people. He looked around and realized she was gone.
Adam so desperately wanted to try to find her, but to his better judgement, he decided that he wanted to keep his job. So he turned and made a break to his truck and sped back to the district, empty handed. Of both caffeine and answers.
...
Kim slammed her car door shut and peaked through her rear view mirror. Only when she found out she wasn't followed could she relax and catch her breath. Then all the thoughts flooded her head.
What just happened? What the hell just happened?! Adam. I saw him. He ran into me. Oh my god. What was I thinking?! What was he thinking?! Why was he here? Does he know about me? He can't know about me.
.
Kim had sprung out of bed and quickly got ready, not even bothering with her hair or makeup. She threw a cap on her head and grabbed a case of beer for Ryan from her fridge. She went to make some coffee for herself and found out that she was all out.
Shit. Today of all days.
Kim needed something that will help with her hangover, and while alcohol would help she didn't want to be drinking in the middle of the day. That would be an all time low. But she needed something, and that something is coffee. She looked at the time. 11:50 am. If she hurried, she could stop by and get some coffee before meeting with Ryan. Her favorite coffee shop was only a few blocks from the meeting place. The cave.
.
Kim shook herself out of her thoughts and saw that it was now noon.
God, I'm going to be late.
She turned on her car and drove off to meet Ryan, hoping he wasn't going to be pissed at her for being late.
Once Kim reached the cave, which is just code for the stash house, she got out of her car and put her sunglasses on. she was getting a headache from the sun and the hangover, and running into Adam didn't help much. she grabbed the beer and looked around for any cops or suspicious people. once she saw that the neighborhood was clear, she crossed the street and walked onto the porch.
Just as she did so, a broad, tall man opened the door and met Kim at the steps, making sure Kim didn't come any closer. Kim didn't recognize him, making her to believe that he was new to the crew. Ryan always had people to stand guard and question people before he saw anyone, even people that he knew. This man was new, meaning he was green. Still, Kim knew not to cross Ryan, and that meant not crossing his men.
"Who are you?" The man asked, buffed out.
Kim crossed her arms and replied, "Kim. Burgess. Ryan knows I'm supposed to be here." She was cutting to the chase, getting aggravated with all the time being wasted.
The guard talked through the wire connected to his ear and Ryan must've approved because the man backed to the door and motioned Kim up the stairs.
Kim knew the next part and didn't even have to be told. She set the beer down and put her arms to the side, willingly inviting the man to pat her down.
Even though she had known Ryan for over a month and has proven her trust to him countless times, she still had to be checked before she saw him. It must have to do with her being a cop. Her used to being a cop. Kim thought with her reputation now, he could trust her, but she was wrong.
The guard was all textbook, going over every body part of Kim's, making her feel slimy. She turned her head, gritted her teeth and just bared it. When he was finally done, he let out a satisfying smile and let her inside. Kim quickly moved past him as walked through the door, making mental note to not get too near the guard again. Ryan was sitting on the couch and two of his men, Carlos and Johnny were at the table. When the guard closed the door behind Kim, Ryan looked over at Kim and nodded, beckoning her towards him.
"You're late." Ryan deadpanned.
"Traffic." Kim lied, keeping her cool. She wanted to have a one up on him, and her attitude and sass was just that.
As she walked to the couch, Johnny walked over and grab the beers from her and opened one immediately.
'Wow, such class.' Kim thought to herself.
As she approached the couch, Ryan grabbed her by the waist and sat her down on his lap. He then kissed her forcefully. Kim kissed back, but inside she was disgusted and uncomfortable.
"Thank god. I needed this." Carlos motioned to the beer as he took a swig. Ryan snapped his fingers and Johnny brought him two bottles.
Kim waved her hand, "No I'm good."
Ryan didn't take the beers and instead stared at Kim. "take one babe."
Kim insisted, "Really, I'm good. I have a bad hangover and I—"
Ryan interrupted her, "I said 'take a beer, and drink'."
Kim tensed her jaw but ultimately took the drink from Johnny and took a sip. She didn't want to start anything with Ryan, especially when she was already tired and upset about her morning.
Johnny was enjoying his drink when his phone rang. He answered it and his shouting caused everyone to look his way.
"Shit. What the hell?!"
"What it is man?" Carlos asked as Johnny hung up.
"Andre got busted."
Kim stood up and took off her sunglasses, surprised by the news. "Andre, as in the owner of La Villa?"
Ryan pulled her back onto his lap, not wanting Kim to leave him. "What happened?" He wasn't upset like the others were. Rather, he was being chill about the news.
Johnny answered, "Don't know. Buddy of mine that works there just called and told me."
"Do you think the cops know about us?" Ryan asked, looking Kim up and down. Everyone turned to look at her, and she felt her own self getting nervous.
Did Adam find out about me? Is that why he ran into me? Is he following me?
She swallowed. "I didn't tell them anything. I don't talk to cops. I haven't even seen them since the whole thing happened." Kim explained, still keeping her cool on the outside. Then she remembered about tonight.
"What about the meet with Aubrey? It was supposed to be tonight at La Villa."
"We won't be able to change it in time. He was hesitant to discuss a trade with us in the first place." Carlos chimed in.
Ryan assured them, staying calm. "It'll be okay. You three still go. I'll stay here and we can group back here tomorrow. I never said I would talk to Aubrey myself anyways."
Of course Ryan's not going. He's not sticking his neck out for us.
"What if the cops are there and we get pooped?" Johnny asked, getting a little anxious. He was always the more careful one out of the bunch. and the most fidgety.
Ryan replied, still at his collected state. "Kim will keep watch while you two do the negotiating." He rubbed up and down Kim's back, sending shivers down her spine.
However, that wasn't a good enough answer for Johnny.
"But Andre must've told them something. I mean why was he bumped in the first place. I don't want to go tonight. It's too risky. I'm not goin—"
With Johnny's response, Ryan stood up, making Kim stand up with him. He marched over to Johnny and stood in front of him, nose to nose, daring him to finish his sentence. All Kim and Carlos could do was watch with eyes wide open.
You don't mess with Ryan.
Ryan stopped Johnny. He gritted through his teeth. "You're not going to what?"
Johnny's steam soon turned to dust as he was shocked and overwhelmed with Ryan's glare. He soon remembered his place within the crew and looked down at the ground.
He sought forgiveness and changed the course of his rant, "Nothing. Tonight's a go."
Ryan stayed where he was, in Johnny's face. "That's what I thought." He then turned and walked back to Kim and hugged her waist. She looked towards Johnny and gave him a look of sympathy.
Carlos cleared his throat and ran down the plan aloud, trying to change the subject and get back to business and ease the tension.
"So 10 pm tonight and La Villa and meet Aubrey at 11 pm."
Ryan confirmed, nodding his head. "And meet back here tomorrow at 10 am. I need to know what happened."
He then turned his attention to Kim, hugging her tighter.
"Make sure to wear your pretty, red dress of yours. It's my favorite."
Kim grinned and approved. "mmhmm, anything for you."
She was certainly getting uncomfortable with Ryan's roaming hands so she tried to make up an excuse to leave.
"Are we done here? I would like to get some sleep before getting ready and seeing your asses again."
Carlos and Johnny rolled their eyes and Ryan let out a laugh.
"Sure thing, babe. But not without a kiss."
Ryan kissed Kim and she reluctantly kissed back, just trying to get it over with so she could leave. He ran his hands all over her back and ass, making Kim try to speed up the process. But as Kim pulled back, Ryan pulled her back into him, obviously not finished.
When Ryan was finally done, he pulled back and Kim put her sunglasses on. She walked past the guard and out the door. Once she got in her car, she quickly sped back to her apartment with the only thing on her mind was sleep.
