Damn the man, he was making her tell Maria. Not only was she to tell her, she was to request to cut down on her overtime hours and have Maria ready for a lower impact position for her in case it became necessary.

Elisa grit her teeth. She didn't want to back off, not when they finally made some headway in finding those damn Humans First members. After some time in jail, Owen Meeks, the man responsible for the destruction of the pier at the PIT fundraiser a few weeks ago, had finally begun cracking like an egg and spilled everything he knew…

Which, admittedly, wasn't much, but it was more than they'd had.

She didn't regret the baby, in fact she was still processing that it was real. She would do what needed to be done to protect it… But she hated that she may be missing out on some of the Human's First stuff.

She really wanted to get those people. Bad.

Captain Maria Chavez was in her office. The door was open, but Elisa still gave the door a few knuckle taps to let Maria know she was here.

"Maza," Maria said, leaning back in her chair. "To what do I owe this visit?"

"I need to talk to you captain," Elisa said, and pulled the door shut behind her… something that she hadn't done since the gargoyles had 'come out' to the public.

Maria's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Alright," She said, leaning forward to cross her arms on the desk in front of her. Once the door was shut, she asked, "What's going on, Elisa?"

Elisa sighed, resigned to what was about to happen. She reached into her jacket pocket, withdrew the ultrasound picture and handed it to Maria.

Maria looked at Elisa confusedly, then took the printout. She looked at it, blinked, looked at Elisa then back at the printout.

"I…Wait, what?" She stuttered, completely at a loss for words. She looked at Elisa, confusion and concern etched into her face. "Who's is this?" She finally managed to ask…very slowly and very carefully.

"It's mine, Maria," Elisa said, finally taking a seat. "And, before you ask, Goliath is the father."

Maria laid the printout down on the surface of the scarred desk. "Alright," Maria said, tenting her fingers in front of her face. "How far along are you?"

"About eight weeks now," Elisa admitted.

"And how long have you known?"

"Almost two weeks," Elisa admitted.

"Congratulations," Maria said softly. "How is Goliath taking the news?"

Elisa smiled a little, "He's excited. Worried. A little freaked out."

"And how are you?" She asked.

Elisa shrugged. "I'm excited. Worried. A little freaked out."

"Have you already seen a doctor?" Maria asked. "I'm assuming that it would be Doctor James at the Aerie Clinic."

"Yeah," Elisa said, running a hand through her hair. "I'm seeing Doctor James."

"Okay," Maria leaned back in her chair. "What did he have to say about you working?"

Elisa sighed and slumped a little in her seat. "I'm to have weekly checkups with him, so that he can monitor the baby closely. I'm not to work overtime unless it is unavoidable and to request that I not have any double shifts," she repeated from memory. "Oh, and I'm supposed to request that you have a more sedentary position available for when I'm closer to term or if any health issues arise."

Maria nodded. "We will work with that. In the meantime, I'm assigning you both Bluestone AND Travis, to hopefully keep you out of trouble and to do any of the heavy lifting… so to speak."

"Okay," Elisa immediately agreed. She sent Maria a look, "You're… taking this a lot better than I had been expecting."

Maria shrugged. "You're not the first of my people to get knocked up, and you won't be the first with a high risk pregnancy. You WILL, however," She said, pointing a finger at Elisa, "be the first with a very large and potentially scary husband who is on the force who would let none of us rest again if anything happened to you."

Something Maria said was bothering Elisa. "What do you mean, 'high risk' pregnancy? Doctor James never said that."

"Call it being overly cautious, but what you have brewing in there," Maria gestured to Elisa's abdomen, "is one special baby. If your doctor is insisting on weekly checkups, he's probably nervous as well." Maria opened one of her desk drawers and withdrew a small stack of papers. "I just want to have everything in place, should it be necessary. Here," she handed the packet to Elisa. "This is all of the information on the NYPD's leave of absence, time off after birth, and options available for both before and after returning to work."

Elisa flinched a little. "Maria, that's still months away."

"And?" Maria said bluntly. "Knowing you, you never even thought to research this stuff yet, and you like to be informed. Here are the tools that you'll need."

"Thanks," Elisa said, taking the papers and tucking it under one arm. "I'll look them over later."

"Also," Maria added, "I'm going to want weekly updates from your doctor. If he has any concerns, at any time, that you shouldn't be in the field, I want to know about it. I'm not saying that I don't trust you to tell me right away," Maria said, holding her hands up to stop any protesting, "But I know you. You would do anything to avoid desk duty, and I'm not willing to put either you or your child's life in jeopardy. In the meantime, I'll make arrangements for you to help Jack on dispatch, and have that position in place and ready for you."

"Thanks, Maria," Elisa said. It stung a little, having Maria call her out like that... but it had been the case in the past, so she couldn't fault the Captain.

"Alright. Go ahead and send in Bluestone and Travis, will you?" Maria said with a finality that let Elisa know that the conversation was finished. "I won't tell them why they're needed, though. I will leave that up to you."

"Thanks," Elisa said, reaching for the doorknob.

"And Elisa?" Maria said, causing Elisa to turn back around to face her. Maria's face broke into a very uncharacteristic smile. "Congratulations."

Elisa returned the smile. "Thanks," she said softly, then returned to the noise and hustle of the bullpen.
