Next up, the Pinta Island Tortoise Bobby is upset, as he's more than likely the last of his kind and therefore his species is doomed. After encouragement from his friends, Luna the Marine iguana and Sam the land iguana, and Lana the Lava lizard, as well as his symbiotic Finch friends, Lincoln, Ronnie Anne, Clyde and Leni, he sets out on a journey to a palosanto tree, on the far side of the island, the last place he saw a female of his species. Will he succeed? And as an added obstacle, can the little finches and Lana avoid a hungry Galopagos Hawk, that's determined to have them for lunch?
This next chapter is dedicated to Lonesome George, the real life last Pinta Island Tortoise, who was found passed away in his enclosure at 8:00 am ,on June 24, 2012, at age 101 to 102. Fun fact, the Futurama Episode also dedicated the Episode to George.
Chapter 3: Lonely Bobby Part 1
(Narration by Becca Chang)
(A volcanic archipelago. Surrounded by beautiful, green sea. In the intertidal area close to the shore, several Marine iguana feed on green and red algae clinging to the rocks. Among them is a completely purple Iguana with freckles on her cheeks. After eating some algae, she swims to shore, and clambers out of the water, stretching. The Iguana walks towards the rocks further inland.)
( Waves crash against the rocks. A mixed group of Marine Iguanas and Galapagos Sea lions bask in the sun strewn shore. As the view pans across, Becca begins the opening Narration.)
Becca Chang: The isolated Galapagos Islands. A veritable patch of evolutionary science. Home to dozens of species, not found anywhere else on Earth. Like Darwin's finches and the Marine iguana, as well as the Galapagos Land Iguana.
(The view stops and settles on a small tree by some cacti and rocks. A pair of Iguana's lie basking on the rocks. One is the Purple Marine iguana from earlier. The second is a Yellow land iguana with a teal streak on top of her head. )
(Meanwhile four small finches fly over and land on the tree above. The first has orange feathers, with a tuft of white hair on his head, the second has light purple feathers with dark hair , the third has green feathers with a small afro and glasses, the last has light green feathers with blonde hair and sunglasses on her head.)
(The finches notice the Iguanas.)
Finch Lincoln: What up, Luna? Sam?
Ronnie Anne: (smirking) Being lazy as usual?
(The purple iguana, Luna, opens one eye.)
Luna: (relaxed) Every day is lazy day on this island paradise we call home, little dudes. I tell you, this island is perfect.
(The land iguana, Sam opens her eyes as well.)
Sam: I hear that, Lunes. Who'd want to live anywhere else?
(A medium sized marine bird lands beside the Iguanas. She has brown hair, and white feathers, and brown wings. Noticeably the webbed feet are blue. The bird joins the conversation.)
Bird Sid: Not me, that's for sure. Lots to eat, few predators and interesting animals not found anywhere else. (to the Audience) Like me, The Blue footed booby! That's fairly interesting! (holds up a foot) Note the blue coloration of my feet!
(A fly buzzes past Luna's head. She frowns at the annoying buzzing insect.)
Luna: (irate) Damn fly. Shoo, don't bother me.
(A close up, shows the fly is dark green, with a messy head of hair and large glasses. She glares at the Marine iguana.)
Fly Lisa: (bzzz) Make me, you Amblyrhynchus cristatus seilmanni! Street name, Pinta Island Marine iguana! (mocking) Oh wait, that's right, you're an Iguana! And therefore you and your land bound friend are primarily vegetarian! I do not fear you!
(Luna scowls. She then snaps her claws.)
Luna: (calling) Yo, Lanes! Got a snack for ya!
Voice: On it!
(From behind a small pile of rocks, a small, slender, blue lizard with blonde hair in small pigtails, runs over to the Iguanas and clambers up onto Luna's head.)
Lava lizard Lana: One side, please!
(Lana then shoots out her long tongue, snags Lisa and pulls her into her mouth and eats her.)
Lana: (burps) Ah, that hit the spot…
(She then pulls out a small card and offers it to Sam.)
Lana: Here's my card, will get rid of any annoying insect. Referrals welcome.
(Lana hops of Luna and scurries back to the rocks, after Sam took her card. As she does so, rustling from some nearby bushes startle Sid away, and even both Iguana's and all four finches tense up. Becca Chang starts narrating again.)
Becca Chang: Of all the creatures in the Galapagos, none is more rarer or more tragic…then the Pinta Island Tortoise…only a single living specimen is known to exist…Lonely Bobby.
(From the bushes emerge a very large tortoise. He's got medium green skin and black hair, combed up in the front. As well as a dark grey carapace and a brown plastron. He slowly ambles over to where the others are and starts chewing on some scraggly grass.)
(Everyone relaxes.)
Ronnie Anne: (chuckles) Oh, it's just Bobby.
Clyde: (relived) Yeah, for a moment I was worried it was something dangerous..you know, like…a human or dog or something.
(The Iguanas and finches both laugh at this. Bobby, remains silent, chewing on his grass. The others stop at his silence, looking concerned.)
Luna: Yo, Bobby, your quiet today. What's the big whoop, my reptile brother?
(Bobby swallows his mouthful of grass.)
Bobby: (melancholy) Oh, it's nothing worth bothering about.
(Lincoln flies down in front of him.)
Lincoln: Would it help if we gave you a symbiotic parasite cleaning? (excited) Would it?!
Ronnie Anne/Clyde/Leni: (excited) Would it?! Would it!? Would it?!
Bobby: (sighs) Oh, sure. Go right ahead.
(Bobby extends his neck and the four finches fly over and set to work, pecking at various areas on his skin.)
Becca Chang: The finches eat parasites off the Tortoise's skin. A mutually beneficial relationship.
Ronnie Anne: (to Becca) Unless you're a parasite.
(A parasite on Bobby's skin is shown. It has the head of Lily, and a lilac, tick like body.)
Tick: Poo! Poo!
(Leni pecks her up.)
Leni: Delish!
(The birds finish cleaning Bobby of parasites.)
Lincoln: (to Bobby) How's that, Bobby? Feeling better?
Bobby: (sighs) I'm sorry, guys. I know you're doing your best, and usually a good parasite cleaning, cheers me right up. But today it's no use. (sad) My species is as good as extinct. I haven't seen a female of my kind…or for that matter, anyone else of my kind , in a hundred years. I'm lonely.
Sam: What about us?
Bobby: (hastily) Oh, don't get me wrong! You guys are the best pals a Tortoise could ever ask for. It's just eventually you need someone of your own kind . (to Luna and Sam) I mean, you and Sam got other iguanas. (to Lincoln, Ronnie Anne, Clyde, and Leni) You guys got other finches. And I'm just, all by myself.
Clyde: (confused) Wait , you're a hundred?
Bobby: Hundred and seventeen, actually. (notices the surprised looks) It's a Tortoise thing.
(Ronnie Anne hops off his neck in front of him.)
Ronnie Anne: Don't worry, Bobby. I'm sure there's another Tortoise out there for you? (looks around) See, what about her?
(Everyone looks in the direction she indicated. They see a smaller female Tortoise, chewing on some lichen on a rock nearby. She's got long blonde hair and mauve colored skin. She looks up and notices Bobby.)
Tortoise Carol: Hey, Handsome.
(Bobby is aghast.)
Bobby: (to Ronnie Anne) Are you crazy? She's a slightly different subspecies.
Ronnie Anne: Jeez, dramatic much?
Bobby: (indicates Carol) See how her shell flares up imperceptibly at the neck. (shudders) Sorry, not my type.
(The finches and Iguanas are quiet as they think.)
Leni: Well, haven't you ever met another Tortoise that, like, had that whole same subspecies thing going on?
Bobby: Oh, yeah. It was a long time ago, when I was a young tortoise of seventeen. I met the Tortoise of my dreams by a palosanto tree on the far side of the island. (dreamily) She was perfect. Shell the right shape, and everything.
(Both Iguana's and finches are happy to see that Bobby's mood seemed to improve at the memory. An idea formed in their minds, practically in synch.)
Clyde: Well, what are we doing just sitting here? (excited) Let's go look for her! Come on!
Lincoln/Ronnie Anne/Leni: (excited) Come on! Come on! Come on!
Bobby: (whistful) I always wondered what happened to her? If she been thinking about me, maybe even waiting for me?
Luna: You'll never know just sitting here, dude. Go see for yourself!
Bobby: (shakes his head) The journey is long.
Leni: It's only like hundred feet?
(Leni points in the distance, where the clearly visible tree is then seen.)
Bobby: At my age, might as well be two hundred feet, besides a lot can happen in one hundred feet on these islands. I'd never make it.
Sam: Like Lunes said, you'll never know just sitting here. Get off your shell and let's go see.
Bobby: (surprised) Wait, we? You mean you guys would come with me?
Luna: Well, duh…we're friends. That's what friends do for each other.
Leni: Yeah, (indicates the finches) Remember, you like, did the same thing last week, with that mean Hawk.
Bobby: Yeah, I do remember that.
(Both Luna and Sam look to the sky.)
Luna: There's a Hawk flying around?
(Ronnie Anne looks at the Iguanas enviously.)
Ronnie Anne: Well, it probably won't bother you two, cause your pretty big.
Clyde: But she's been buggin' us for the last few weeks…even went after Lana a few times.
(Lana pokes her head out from her cover of rocks.)
Lana: Yep. She's come close a few times, but ol' Lanes always gives her the slip.
Leni: She's always being so mean, ruining our nice, relaxing days by dive-bombing us from the sky, terrifying us…trying to eat us, obviously.
Lincoln: Last time she tried, Clyde almost became Hawk food.
(Clyde shudders.)
Clyde: (traumatized) I still have nightmares.
(Flashback to the Finches eating some flowers by Luna and Sam's basking rock. They are alerted something is up by a grey and black mockingbird with dark hair color her eyes sitting in the tree.)
Mockingbird Lucy: (dead-pan) Hawk. Hawk! Fly for your lives.
(Lucy flies away as a large, menacing shadow flies over head. The finches look up and see a silhouette of the larger bird flying past the sun.)
Leni: (terrified) Hawk! It's like, gonna eat us and stuff!
Ronnie Anne: (annoyed) Why are we always at the bottom of the food chain?
Lincoln: Fly away! Fly away!
(The finches panic and fly in separate directions. Clyde doesn't pay attention where he's flying and collides with the tree. He flops to the ground, when he sits back up , his glasses are missing.)
Clyde: (squinting) My glasses! I can't see a thing without my glasses!
(Clyde starts hopping around, desperate to find his glasses. He hops a short distance as a pair of large taloned feet land directly in front of him. Clyde doesn't notice since he's practically blind without his glasses.)
Clyde: Oh, I hope that hawk doesn't see me.
(Clyde unknowingly hops closer towards the feet. His glasses are underneath them. As he stops, the feet pick up his glasses and return them to his face. Clyde blinks as his vision is restored.)
Clyde: (relieved) Ahhh, that's better (looks up) Thanks for…for..for..
(Clyde putters off as he sees what returned his glasses. It's a large bird with reddish brown feathers, and a razor sharp beak. She's got brown hair in a small ponytail and freckles, she smirks at him.)
(Clyde stands petrified.)
Clyde: Ha…Ha…Haw…
Hawk Lynn: (imitating) Ha…Ha…Ha…HAWK!
(Clyde tries to take off. Lynn grabs him in her talons before he can.)
Clyde: Help! Bird police!
Lynn: Stomach meet lunch. (to Clyde) Lunch meet stomach.
(Lynn stuffs Clyde into her mouth. But before she can eat him a long tongue lashes out and strikes Lynn in the eye. Lynn yelps in pain and spits out Clyde.)
Lynn: My eye!
(Lana's tongue returns to her mouth.)
Lana: That's right! Leave him alone, you big bully!
(Clyde takes off. Lynn glares at Lana with her uninjured eye.)
Lynn: You know I was in the mood for Finch, but since you cost me my lunch, you'll do!
(Lynn launches herself into the air and dive-bombs after Lana. Lana ducks back under her rock cover as Lynn lands. Lynn tears apart the rocks looking for her, unaware that Lana is creeping silently out from underneath her tail feathers. She sees the finches and scurries over and all take off away from Lynn. )
(Lynn finished tossing away the pile of rocks, but finds no Lana. She looks around and sees the finches are also gone. There is no prey in sight.)
Lynn: (enraged) Damn! I'll find those finches, and that meddling lizard! Even if I have to track them all over the Archipelago! They haven't seen the last of Lynnsanity!
(Lynn unfurls her wings and takes off, muttering angrily under her breath. As she flies away, the view shifts over to show Bobby's shell a mere ten feet away, with his limbs retracted. As Lynn silhouette fades into the distance, Bobby's head comes out, Lincoln, Ronnie Anne, Clyde, Leni, and Lana are piled on top of the his head. They all breath a sigh of relief.)
Lincoln: (to Bobby) Thanks for the save, Bobby. If you hadn't been here and let us hid in your shell, we'd be hawk food by now.
Ronnie Anne: Least Clyde would be.
(Clyde shudders.)
Clyde: And I'm having nightmares tonight.
Lana: Seriousness thought , big guy. We owe you one.
Bobby: That's what friends do for each other.
(Back in the present.)
Lana: Took me a whole week to get my rock pile put back together.
Leni: You see, Bobby. You helped us , now we'll help you find your lady tortoise friend. Now let's go!
Lincoln/Ronnie Anne/Clyde: Yeah! Come on! Let's go! Do it! Do it! Do it!
(Bobby ponders on what his friends said. The journey was long, but the idea of seeing another member of his kind, especially the Tortoise of his dreams was very tempting.)
Bobby: Well, let me think it over.
(Bobby thinks for a minute, then half a clam shell comes flying from where the other Marine Iguanas and Sea lions are basking.)
Luke's voice: (off screen, annoyed) Just go already! Your talking too loud, and some of us are trying to sleep over here!
(Another clam shell flies over and smacks Bobby in the face.)
Loki's voice: (off screen) And there's literally like thirty more where that came from!
(Bobby, Luna, Sam, Lincoln, Ronnie Anne, Clyde, Leni and Lana are surprised at this.)
Bobby: (to the others):Well , ok then. Looks like we're going.
(Lana comes out from her rock pile.)
Lana: Ohh, can I come too? I've never been to the far side of the island?
Leni: Yay! It can be a like a fun Symbiotic buddy road trip!
(Bobby slowly makes his way up the sandy hill on the start of the long journey to the far side of the island. Luna and Sam are perched on his carapace, with Lana sitting on Sam's head. Lincoln, Ronnie Anne, Clyde, and Leni fly along side.)
…..
(On a ledge over looking the sea, a small alcove with several small bones of various small animals is shown. Lynn the Galapagos hawk steps out and looks around.)
Lynn: (considering) Let's see…who's gonna be lunch today?
(A view through Lynn's eyes is shown. The sharp eyes of the Hawk looks down at the coast. She sees the Sea lions and Marine Iguanas.)
Lynn: (hmm) Let's see…(sea lions) No, too big. (Marine Iguanas) No, too big also, plus taste terrible…Wait a minute.
(Lynn spots Bobby leaving slowly up the coast. More importantly, she sees Lincoln, Ronnie Anne, Clyde, Leni and Lana. Remembering how they gave her the slip last week, Lynn chuckles darkly.)
Lynn: Well, well, well, looks like I got a hunt on my hands. (looks at her wings) Well, you know what I mean. But I'm gonna catch those losers, and when I do. (licks her lips) Lunchtime!
(Chuckling, Lynn unfurls her wings and flies off in the direction of Bobby and her soon to be prey.)
End of part 1.
Since this one didn't have much , I had to come up with some more drama.
Bobby's off with Luna, Sam, Lincoln, Ronnie Anne, Clyde and Leni, and Lana on his long journey to the far side of the island, unknowing that Lynn the Hawk is after his lava lizard and Finch pals.
