Chapter 31
Seemingly the whole ocean floor shook as Drago Bludvist the Bewilderbeast stomped his way through the sea en route to Berk with dozens of dragons under his control circling overhead. This includes Hiccup's friends, his parents, almost every dragon on Berk, Krogen's own army, and of course Hiccup himself who was sitting on top of Drago's head with Astrid cuddling and nuzzling him.
Astrid says with joy. "Oh, Hiccup. It's so good to have you back in my wings where you belong." Since Hiccup's mind was under Drago's control, he couldn't utter any sort of response even if he wanted to. Astrid sighs to this. "You know, the fact that Hiccup can't even respond to me does kind of kill the joy a little."
Krogen then points out to her, "I do find it intriguing that you're so happy right now. Especially since Hiccup did kill the girl that you used to be friends with."
The Nadder replies. "What, you mean Stormfly? Yeah, I guess I do feel a little bad but if you want to make an omelette, you're gonna have to crack a few eggs."
Krogen nods. "Funny, that's how I felt when Viggo sacrificed himself." Krogen then looks up to the king who was sitting in his cage. He smiles and says, "Not so high and mighty now, are you?"
The king huffs. "Soon as I get out of here, you're all going to pay."
Krogen chuckles. "You actually think you can escape? No chance. Even if your pathetic friends come to help you, they'll still have to deal with myself, all of these dragons, and of course the Alpha."
Drago adds, "He's right, so don't try anything funny." Berk was almost in the horizon, so Drago smiles and looks up to Stoick and says, "I hope you watch closely." Like with Hiccup, Stoick's mind was too clouded to respond.
Back at Valka's sanctuary, Toothless and the rest of the former dragons had already dug up a grave for Stormfly where they buried her. Normally at a Viking funeral they would send her drifting on a ship that they'd light on fire with flaming arrows, but these guys weren't always Vikings.
Toothless was kneeling over the grave as he sighs and says, "Anyone want to say something?"
Meatlug kneels down and says. "You were always one of the most cunning and kind out of all of us. I am honored to have known you as a friend."
Windshear steps up and says, "Obviously I didn't know Stormfly as well as you guys, but just that one act of saving you, Toothless, tells me that she's very brave."
Toothless sighs. "Yeah…" Tears were still rolling down his face.
Cloudjumper steps up and pats Toothless on the back. "It wasn't Hiccup's fault. Good dragons controlled by the wrong people can lead to do bad things."
Toothless wipes the tears and says, "I know that it's just…well…I don't know. I guess right now I kind of feel…"
"…Lost?" Windshear asks.
Toothless nods. "Yeah. That's it."
Hookfang then huffs and says, "Well, what are we going to do now?"
Toothless looks back and asks, "What do you mean?"
The red haired boy shrugs. "Well, certainly we can't just sit here wallowing forever. We gotta do something to make things right."
Meatlug adds. "As much as I really hate to say it, Hookfang's right. We gotta figure out a plan to get back at Drago and Krogen for what they did."
Toothless nods as he stands up. "We've got to get back to Berk before it's too late."
Belch asks, "And just how do you expect to do that? All of the dragons are gone and none of us have a boat of any kind. Unless you intend on swimming there in this arctic cold water."
"Yep, looks like you're in a real pickle there." Said a familiar voice coming from behind a nearby rock.
Toothless recognizes the voice and walks behind the rock to see a Hotburple lying there. "Gobber? What are you doing here? W-were you not affected by Drago's control?"
Gobber thinks for a moment. "Oh, is that what was going on? Sorry, it was just so tiring planning this battle so I thought I'd take a power nap behind this rock. Guess that ended up turning into a full on sleep."
Cloudjumper asks, "Wait, so you didn't even notice that all of the dragons were going crazy under mind control?"
Gobber yawns. "A bit hard to notice anything while you're asleep. Matter of fact, I was hoping it would end soon so I could sleep some more."
Meatlug thinks about this. "That's strange. Even some of the dragons that were hiding were affected. Could it be that Hotburples are somehow immune to the control of a Bewilderbeast?"
Cloudjumper points a finger up. "Yes, it is. Hotburples are one of the few dragons that eat iron as part of their diet, and that iron actually fuses with their muscles and gives them a sort of internal helmet. Perhaps that's what was blocking Drago's mind control."
Toothless blinks before looking to the others. "Well, we do have A dragon."
Barf adds, "Yeah, but just this dragon can only take two, maybe three at the max of us back to Berk. Plus, how do we know Gobber's not just going to get controlled like the rest of them?"
Windshear adds to that, "Seems to me like only two of us can actually go. So…who's it going to be?"
There was a long pause as the gang tries to figure out what to do. The silence was broken as Toothless says, "I'll go."
The rest of the gang look to him as Hookfang asks, "You?"
Toothless nods. "Hiccup is my mate, whether or not our seal is broken. If anyone can reach him, it should be me."
Cloudjumper asks, "Well, that's fine but who else is going to come with you?"
Toothless replies, "Someone who can distract Drago long enough for me to get to Hiccup, and I can't think of anyone better suited for that job than you two." He points to Barf and Belch.
Belch, the green haired male human, shrugs. "It's true, we do have quite the knack for making distractions."
Barf, his twin sister, adds. "It's really more of a hobby than anything."
Toothless nods and says. "Perfect. That just leaves one more thing." He turns around and face Gobber. "Gobber, do you think you can take Belch and I back to Berk?"
Gobber yawns and sighs. "Berk is so far away. Plus it's so nice here on this ice bed, I think I'm just going to stay here."
Toothless gets a little pissed at Gobber's laziness, so he kneels and says, "Gobber, right now your best friend is over there doing who knows what. Right now, he needs your help more than any of us…please."
Gobber blinks before his eyes widen. "By golly, you're right, Toothless." He stands up and Toothless, Barf and Belch climb on, finding there's just enough room on Gobber's back.
Before taking off, Toothless says to the others, "When I get the dragons back, I'll send them for you." Toothless pats Gobber on the side of the head and he flies off towards Berk.
Cloudjumper steps forward and says, "Artruthium's speed, Toothless. Artruthium's speed."
Back on Berk, there was a shadow looming over the Drago had finally arrived. Every resident, human and dragon alike, had to stop what they were doing to gaze at the massive dragon in front of them. Suddenly, every dragon on Berk that wasn't at the battle fell under the Alpha's control and made their way to join the rest in the sky above Drago.
Drago then yells out to the village. "People of Berk! I now have control of all the dragons, including the one that you claim to be your chief!" He has the red Rumblehorn fly down a bit to show them. He announces, "You will all bow to me as your new chief and new Alpha, or else you will pay!"
Krogen pats Drago on the head. "Why don't you show them exactly what you mean?"
Drago smiles. "With pleasure." He turns around and fires an ice breath that turns a patch of ocean the size of himself frozen solid in an instant. He turns back around and says, "That could've easily been your weak village. Now, does anyone have anything to say?"
Of course everyone was just too terrified of this massive dragon to say or do anything, so they all just sat there. Drago smiles and says, "Good! Now, there's going to be some changes around here-"
"Drago!" Toothless yells out as he along with Barf, Belch and Gobber approach.
Krogen growls upon seeing them. "Was that dragon at the sanctuary? How did you not notice it?"
Drago replies, "That's what I'm wondering. No matter. You, Night Fury, get them!"
Hiccup turns around and jumps towards them. "Here he comes!" Toothless yells as he has Gobber dodge some Plasma Blasts that were fired. Gobber flies down to the land and has Barf and Belch get off while he and Toothless go back to the skies.
Drago growls to Hiccup. "Don't stop until that human loses his other leg, and perhaps something else!"
Gobber complains, "Toothless, my wings are tired from the flight over here."
Toothless pats Gobber and says, "Just hold on a little longer, Gob." Hiccup chased Toothless and Gobber down, trying to get a good eye on them to fire a plasma blast. Toothless yells back to Hiccup, "Hiccup! It's me!"
Of course Hiccup couldn't hear anything with his clouded mind, so he keeps up the pursuit.
Astrid growls and smacks Drago. "Come on, you ice head. Can't you get one Night Fury to chase one Hotburple?"
Krogen pats Astrid. "Easy now. Hotburples have a surprisingly fast flying speed. But you are right, it shouldn't be that difficult."
Drago was about to say something to Hiccup, when he hears Berk's war siren being sounded. He looks over and sees nothing there, so he turns his attention back to Hiccup but then he hears it again. Behind the siren, it was Belch who was blowing it.
Then, a sheep was tossed into the air as Barf was using a war canon to launch them high up.
Toothless could see that Drago was getting distracted, so he says to Gobber, "Now!" Gobber turns a corner which Hiccup does, but finds that no one was there when he turned it. Suddenly, he was weighed down as Gobber flops down on top of him, making him crash to the ground. Gobber stays on top of Hiccup, not letting him move a muscle.
Toothless figured he didn't have much more time to keep Drago distracted, so he gets off Gobber and slowly approaches Hiccup while calmly saying. "Hiccup? Come on, Hiccup. I know you're in there."
Hiccup's slit pupils widen for a split second before going back. Toothless continues approaching. "It's not your fault, Hiccup. It's not your fault. You didn't kill Stormfly, Drago did."
Again, Hiccup's eyes widen and he shakes his head a bit and says. "T…Tooth…less?"
Toothless looks up and sees that Drago was starting to look for him again, so he needed to speed things along. He steps forward, touching Hiccup's cheek and says, "Hiccup. It's me. Your mate."
Hiccup blinks before shaking his head a few times and opening his eyes, showing that they're fully widened as his vision returns. "T-Toothless?"
Toothless smiles. "Yes, that's it!"
Hiccup smiles wide. "Toothless! Y-you saved me!" Gobber realizes that Hiccup was back to normal, so he gets up and Hiccup nearly tackles Toothless down. "Toothless. I'm so sorry."
Toothless pats him. "No, you have nothing to be sorry for."
Krogen, who saw all of that, asks, "How in the world did he do that?"
Astrid growls. "That little sneak."
Drago growls at a frequency that causes the ground to shake, making Hiccup stop his hugging. He locks eyes with Toothless and says, "Let's go, love."
Toothless smiles and climbs on. "Lead the way, babe." Hiccup takes off just as Drago had fired off another ice breath, just barely managing to dodge it.
Drago says to Hiccup, "You can run but you can't hide, boy!"
Drago tries to regain control, making Hiccup shake his head a bit more. Toothless then says, "If Drago regains control of you then there's no telling what he'll do."
Hiccup looks down and spots a torn up ship flag. He motions downwards and says, "I think I have an idea."
Toothless sees the flag and says, "Me too." Hiccup dives in, dodging a few more ice blasts along the way, and soon Toothless grabs the strip of flag fabric. He holds it up and says, "Alright, I'm gonna need your full trust for this."
Hiccup nods. "Do it." Toothless leans in and wraps the cloth around Hiccup's eyes and ears, tying it on the back of his head.
Unable to see, Hiccup had to rely solely on Toothless kicking him in the neck to know where he was going. It took some trial and error at first, but Hiccup quickly got it down and was able to maneuver himself around whatever Drago was trying to give him.
Toothless comments. "All those dragons at his disposal, yet Drago is just firing at us himself. What could he be doing?"
Hiccup replies, "I guess Drago wants to personally see us die."
However, there was an unexpected fire from Krogen as Toothless gets knocked off of Hiccup and falls to the earth. Hiccup could feel his neck get lighter, so he turns around and dives down. Drago smiles and says, "Perfect." Before firing one last ice blast.
Hiccup manages to grab Toothless and save him before he hit the ground, but that didn't stop the ice blast from hitting Hiccup on the back and capturing him in a pillar of ice.
Astrid yells out. "Hey! I thought we agreed to keep Hiccup alive!"
Drago chuckles. "Change of plans, girlie. At least this way I can report to an old friend that the last Night Fury is finally dead."
Barf and Belch run up to where Hiccup and Toothless got frozen and begin pounding on the ice. "Hiccup! Toothless!" Barf yells.
"Are you guys in there?" Belch adds.
For a moment, it seemed futile to even try, but then there was a light blue glow that could be seen from inside the ice, and what sounds like a powerful plasma blast getting charged. Barf suggests, "Get back!" as she grabs Belch and takes him to the ground as the ice shatters, revealing Hiccup and Toothless inside with Hiccup having reached his Alpha mode.
Toothless's eyes widen. "Hiccup. What are you doing?"
Hiccup replies, "Relax. This time…I'm in control."
Toothless smiles and says, "Go get 'em, Hiccup."
Hiccup faces Drago and yells out. "THIS ENDS NOW!" before leaping onto one of the ice pillars Drago created.
Drago tries to reach out to Hiccup. "Stand down, Night Fury."
However, Hiccup wasn't having it. "NO! I WILL NOT STAND BY AS YOU STAND THERE AND BE A DISGRACE TO DRAGON KIND!"
Barf runs up and asks, "What is Hiccup doing?"
Toothless replies, "He's…challenging the Alpha to save us!"
Every person on Berk cheers out. Krogen growls and smacks Drago on the head. "Do something? Have one of his subordinates take him down."
Drago shakes his head. "Sorry, Krogen, but a challenge to the Alpha can only be completed by an Alpha."
Astrid stands there gob smacked. "What?"
Hiccup charges up a powerful plasma blast and fires it right at Drago's cheek. Then does the same on the rest of his face. Hiccup yells. "COME ON! *blast* SHOW ME WHAT YOU'RE MADE OF! *blast*"
Drago growls and fires an ice blast that Hiccup jumps to dodge. As Hiccup was doing his thing, Stoick and Valka's eyes re-widen as their senses return and they fly to be above Hiccup. Stoick yells to Hiccup, "That's it, son!"
Valka adds, "Keep it up!"
This was followed by Fishlegs, Snotlout, the twins, Heather, and the other dragons as their own senses return and they fly over to Hiccup. Even Krogen's Singetail guards fly over to Hiccup.
Krogen looks around. "It can't be."
Hiccup yells out, "YOU THINK YOU DESERVE TO BE AN ALPHA? YOU'RE WRONG! AN ALPHA LIVES TO SERVE AND PROTECT ITS KIND, NOT ENSLAVE THEM AND FORCE THEM TO KILL!" With one final blast, Hiccup manages to knock off Drago's other massive tusk and have it fall to the ocean.
Astrid looks down to Drago and says, "Come on! Do something!"
Drago blinks and says, "You think I can't take all of these dragons back? Bah."
Hiccup growls some more. "Not if you're dead. Berkians, ATTACK!"
Suddenly, each and every dragon on Hiccup's side fires their own blast that hits Drago directly in the face. This was ended by Hiccup firing Plasma Blasts right into Drago's mouth, exploding on the inside and tearing up vital organs that made him vomit a tremendous amount of blood into the ocean as he collapses like a tree falling.
Since Astrid's wings were still unusable, she had no way to escape Drago crashing into the ocean and dying right before their eyes. As for Krogen, he did manage to escape and found Astrid to be disposable enough to let her die with Drago.
Krogen growls deeply as he says, "You little punk! I will get you next time!"
"No you won't." Hiccup says as he fires a blast that explodes one of the ice pillars above Krogen, making it fall on him and make him fall into the ocean, landing chest first on top of Astrid's tail spines.
With all that done, Hiccup takes a few breaths before turning around and facing the cheering crowd. Toothless runs up and hugs Hiccup tight. "You did it! You did it! That was the most incredible thing I've ever seen."
Hiccup nods as his Alpha mode fades. "Yeah, I guess I did. *gasp* Toothless, our mating seal."
Toothless nods. "I know." A tear forms in his eye upon saying it.
Hiccup suggests, "Well, maybe we could perform the ritual again."
Toothless sighs. "No, you don't get it. Once a dragon mating seal has been broken, it cannot be repaired. Under any circumstances."
Hiccup dips his head in sadness. "Oh."
Toothless smiles and cups Hiccup's cheeks. "Don't worry about it. So what if we don't have a seal to prove our love? I still love you just as much as I did when we did the ritual." Hiccup smiles and kisses Toothless before all of the other dragons land and surround Hiccup.
Stoick steps forward and bows before Hiccup. "Let's hear it for Alpha Hiccup!"
Every dragon yells, "ALL HAIL HICCUP!"
Hiccup looks around and just couldn't believe what he was hearing. Him, Hiccup, the guy who some years ago couldn't even lift an axe, now an Alpha to dragons. He had to admit it felt pretty good.
The king, well former king, who was released during the commotion, runs up and pats Hiccup on the head. "You did it, Hiccup. You protected your own kind from the brink of doom, and that, to me, makes you a perfect Alpha."
Hiccup nods. "Thank you. And thank you all! I promise to protect you all from this day forward, and not let any of you get harmed like you did today!"
Everyone screams out in joy, praising the new Alpha.
After they had all settled, they all went back to the sanctuary to retrieve those who were left behind. Valka decided to move back in with Stoick and they gave Cloudjumper Hiccup's old bed since he wasn't going to be needing it anymore.
Heather and Windshear return to Clang, grateful to have been able to go on such a thrilling adventure and promising to visit now and then.
Most of the humans at the sanctuary went back with the Berkians and, since Berk wasn't quite big enough for the dozens of them, Stoick got to work on finding new homes for them amongst Berserker Island, Clang, and some of the other allied villages.
Hiccup and Toothless had finally settled into the home they got before leaving to escape from Astrid and are now happier than ever, despite the loss of their mating seal. There, Hiccup kept his promise and was there to help his fellow dragons in whatever they needed, and both of them couldn't be more excited to one day bring their new baby into the world.
