Matt and Travis strolled in a short time later. Matt had brought her a large hot decaffeinated tea (still not the same as coffee, but slightly healthier than her hot chocolate fixation) and Travis set a white take-out box in front of her.
Elisa sent Travis a look, then almost hugged him when she saw the box was full of her favorite dumplings from the Happy Dragon Chinese Bistro down the street. She emptied the box as she ran them through all that she'd found.
"It's been months, but I finally managed to track the owner of that building that caught fire that had the Humans First sign. Turns out that the building had been unoccupied for a while. The owner, Nathan Tatum, is under suspicion of arson and actually hiring someone to do it to collect the insurance money." Elisa held out one of the many files that she'd created, "He admitted to it last week. He hired the person through a friend of a friend, a Mister Mainnes," Elisa held out a second folder. "While Mr. Tatum is in talks of assisting in this investigation in exchange for a more lenient sentence, Mr. Mainnes is in the wind. I had a hit on one of his credit cards at a motel in New Jersey last night, and the Jersey PD went to check it out. Between the time that the officers went to the front desk to get a room number and the time that they got to the room, he had run. By the looks of his room, he'd packed and left in a hurry but had left a lot of personal items behind in the room."
Matt and Travis studied the pictures that the NJPD had sent over.
"Once the items are catalogued in their system, they'll be sending it over here for us to inspect." Elisa shrugged. "They couldn't tell me when that would be done, so you may want to call and remind them that we are in need of the items. It's not their case, so they aren't really motivated to hurry on their own."
"I'll do that," Travis said, holding out a hand for the folder.
Elisa nodded. "Mainnes has a string of mysterious deposits in his accounts. Nothing so large as to get someone's attention individually, but together, it's enough to make me wonder what else he's involved in."
"So, last known location was in New Jersey?" Matt asked.
"Newark," Elisa confirmed. "I have a couple of our tech guys keeping an eye out for more credit card usage from him, and hopefully we can get him next time."
"I'll reach out to them tonight," Travis promised.
"Thanks," Elisa said. "At any rate, there is no definite connection between the building itself and the Humans First group, since they weren't actually renting it. I back-traced the rental paperwork, and the last occupant was almost a year ago, and it was a small, local design studio that was trying to make a go of it in the fashion world."
Matt gestured to the stack of files that was still on her desk, "What are all of those?"
"These," She said, shoving the small stack at Matt, "Are files on every known person of interest having any known connection to the Humans First organization. All of them have at least one of those mysterious deposits to their accounts. Whoever is funding this has a lot of disposable funds at their disposal."
Matt frowned and looked at the file tabs with interest. "Are all of these people still in custody somewhere?" He asked.
"A few," Elisa admitted. "Some were arrested on suspicion, but since being a part of the organization is not against the law, they were released. Now that the Feds are talking about labelling the organization a domestic terrorist group, that may change at some point. Until then, we only have a few incarcerated where we would be able to get to them."
Matt nodded. "Let me see if I can lean on them a little bit."
"Be careful, though," Elisa warned. "Our former officer friend, Silvan," Elisa sneered the name, "Has a really pushy lawyer on his side. If you want to talk to him, you have to go through the lawyer, and she'll want to be present when you do question him."
"Awesome," Matt grumbled.
There was no love lost between anyone within the NYPD and the former NYPD officer. He had even been a member of the original incarnation of the Gargoyle Task Force, but he had joined for all of the wrong reasons. Him, and his former partner had joined because of the pay bump, and the possibility of hunting what they thought of as monsters. When the Gargoyles had been offered a chance to join the NYPD, the clan had been asked to train with the GTF in hopes that they would be able to act as human representatives between the various law enforcement and public safety branches of the Manhattan.
Former officer Silvan and his partner officer Chambers had protested having to work with "the monsters" and had been dropped from the GTF program and reassigned. Silvan had immediately joined Humans First, and had taken part in a plan to use Crowd suppression canisters to ruin the badge presentation ceremony for the clan.
Silvan had been caught at the scene while the others had escaped.
Silvan had been the first of the Humans First members caught. He had also been the first to call any members of the NYPD that got between HF and the clan were going to be considered 'Collateral Damage' in their mission to eliminate the clan.
Needless to say, that had not endeared him to anyone. His lawyer had argued that there was concern over his treatment and a fear of retaliation from other NYPD officers, that while under arrest and while the trial was going on, he had been housed at a holding facility in New Jersey.
"Noted," Matt said, flipping open the file to glance inside, "Talk to lawyer."
Elisa rolled her eyes.
"Holy crap, Elisa," Travis said, still looking through the pages of Mainnes' file. "This is really thorough. You have everything in here but his shoe size."
"Ten and a half wide," Elisa deadpanned.
Travis looked up from the file and narrowed his eyes at her. "I… can't tell if you're joking or not."
Elisa shrugged as Matt laughed.
"It's thorough," Elisa said, "Because I've had nothing else to do but sit here and chase paper trails. Which," Elisa felt the need to point out, "is something that our document forensics team totally could have handled."
"Don't complain," Matt suggested. "We did as much as we could to keep you involved and off of the dispatch desk, which we all know will drive you a little crazy."
"Fair point," Elisa said.
"You don't go on dispatch until tomorrow, right?" Travis asked.
"Yeah," Elisa replied.
Travis looked at Matt, "What about taking her out for one more short ride along, so she doesn't forget what it's like?"
Elisa turned her hopeful gaze on Matt. "Please, partner?"
"Oh, don't 'please partner' me," Matt ground out.
"Matt," Elisa said, dropping the sweet female act. "Please. I need out from the desk. Just for a while?"
Matt sighed. So they take her out on a car ride. It wouldn't be like they were taking her out on a case, so what could be the harm? One short car ride, grab her some pickles and ice cream… pregnant women liked that, right… then right back here to the station.
"Alright," He said, grabbing his keys. "We take my car though."
Elisa let out a little whoop, swiveled in her chair and held her hands out so that the men could help her out of the chair.
Both let out groans, and she slugged them in the shoulders for their trouble. Laughing, the three of them made their way outside.
