The Ultimate Detective and The Ultimate Hope Gaiden: Hana and Shingi Naegi Awaken!

Kyoko finished zipping up Makoto's trademark hoodie, the boy now dressed in his usual jeans and sneakers that filled the Vice-Headmistress with nostalgia.
"Thanks for helping me to get dressed, Kyoko. Hopefully wearing this old outfit will lessen the shock to Mom and Dad when we tell them how much has changed since we last saw them."
Nodding, Kyoko asked "Are you sure you don't want me to accompany you and Komaru?"
Nodding and smiling reassuringly, Makoto replied "It's going to be fine, honey; Mom and Dad aren't in danger anymore, and I'm sure Byakuya's relieved that he doesn't have to worry about being Deputy Headmaster anymore."
The two turned around, hearing Komaru's footsteps as she walked in and approached them, asking "Hey, you ready to go, Onii-chan?"
Nodding, Makoto reached up, framing his fiancée's cheeks in his hands as he pecked her lips, assuring her as he broke away "I'll be fine, okay? I'll call you later from the hospital."
Kyoko nodded and relented "Okay…I love you, Makoto."
"I love you too. Have fun at work, okay?"
Seeing Kyoko nod, Makoto released her and turned around, walking out the room with Komaru in tow.

"Oh, Mikan, hi!" Makoto greeted as the two of them spotted the former Ultimate Nurse standing just outside Hana and Shingi's hospital room.
Mikan nervously turned around, stammering "Ma…Makoto…I was just tak…taking your parents vi…vitals…should I have waited until you two a…arrived? I'm sorry!"
Makoto shushed her "Mikan, it's okay; you were just doing your job. You don't need to feel sorry, alright?" Once Mikan had calmed down, Makoto asked "So how are they, are they awake yet?"
Mikan shook her head as she informed him "Not yet, but they are sleeping peacefully, so I think that they're just getting some extra sleep in. Feel free to go in and wait for them to wake up."
"Thank you, Mikan." After bowing along with Komaru, Makoto urged "Let's go, Komaru" before walking inside with Komaru.

*Groan*
Hana and Shingi cracked open their eyes, hearing the thundering footsteps getting closer and closer as their vision came into focus.
"Ma…koto…?" Hana croaked as she saw her osn tearfully smiling at her, holding her hand and kneeling by her bedside.
"Ko…maru…?" Shingi croaked as he saw his daughter tearfully smiling at him, holding his hand and kneeling by his bedside.
"Mom…"
"Dad…"
As Hana and Shingi groaned and struggled to sit up, their children gently held them down.
"Mom, Dad, don't strain yourselves! You only just came out of a coma!"
The Naegi parents quickly stopped resisting, making Makoto and Komaru sigh in relief before they turned their heads and saw Mikan walk in, two beverages in hand as she exclaimed "Oh, you're awake!"
Hana and Shingi turned their heads, furrowing their brows as they asked "Who…"
Makoto smiled, letting go and explaining "Mom, Dad, this is Mikan Tsumiki. She used to be the Ultimate Nurse at Hope's Peak Academy, and she's been helping to nurse you back to health ever since you were admitted to the hospital."
Mikan nodded shyly as she reached down to the controls on their beds, pressing a button on each so that their beds could recline into a sitting position.
Holding out the beverages to Makoto and Komaru, she asked "Since you're here, would you mind helping me to feed your parents? They still have to go through physical therapy to regain the use of their muscles, so they'll likely need help to eat until we start."
Nodding, Makoto each took a beverage and held it to their parents' lips, urging "Mom, Dad, drink up!"
Nodding weakly, the weakened parents sipped the straws held out to them, a flavorless liquid flowing into their mouths and down their throats.
They probably did this for us countless times when we were babies…who knew things would come full circle… Makoto and Komaru wondered as they finished taking their first sip of food since entering their comas.
Fully opening their eyes and regaining some of their vitality and awareness, Hana and Shingi smiled gratefully at their dedicated children.
"So…when can we have your cooking again, honey? I miss your food!"
Makoto and Komaru giggled at their Father's one-track mind, while Hana weakly rolled her eyes and remarked "We just woke up, dear. Try and be patient while we recover our strength. Once we get discharged, I'll happily cook us a welcome home meal."
As Shingi started salivating, Makoto and Komaru beamed, happy that even though their parents were still hospitalized, their family was finally starting to look whole again.

"So…how much do you remember?" Makoto asked hesitantly, Mikan having left the Makoto and Komaru alone with their revitalized parents.
Hana closed her eyes, her expression intense in thought before she opened them and answered "I remember getting separated from Komaru, but after that, I can't remember anything."
Shingi nodded and continued "There are also several parts of our past that I can't seem to clearly recall…"
Hana nodded and agreed "It feels like they're there, but whenever I try to focus on remembering, I feel like I have a migrane."
Makoto smiled at his parents and assured them "I know how that feels…I'm sure they'll come back with time, don't worry…" Though I probably shouldn't mention yet that I'm engaged; they might not even remember who Kyoko is! Frowning as he and Komaru sat by their bedsides, Makoto continued "As for what happened after your separation, Komaru and I will give you a synopsis." Grimacing, Makoto warned "It's not a fun memory though, so…just brace yourselves, okay?"
Hana and Shingi stared in concern at their children's unusually serious expressions, wondering what kind of things could have happened to them during the gap in their memory. Taking a deep breath, the two recovering parents nodded slowly, allowing Makoto to begin.
"After the Tragedy began, my classmates and I were sealed inside Hope's Peak Academy for our own protection. But…we didn't know that the mastermind who started the Tragedy was our own classmate, Junko Enoshima. She and her sister, Mukuro Ikusaba took over the school a year after we were sealed inside and wiped our memories of the prior two years."
"Then, once we all "met" each other, Junko, speaking though a robotic teddy bear named Monokuma, forced the rest of us into a deadly game where we had to kill each other to have a chance of escaping to the outside world."
Hana and Shingi's eyes widened in horror as they took in Makoto's words. The situation that Makoto described was far worse than any of the nightmares their imaginations could concoct about the world that their children would be venturing into.
"Suffice to say, a lot of us died in the days ahead; I myself came close to dying more times than I care to admit. Eventually, those of us who remained were able to expose and defeat Junko, who took her own life. By the time we were able to leave Hope's Peak Academy and head out into the outside world, only myself and five of my fifteen classmates survived Junko's Killing Game."
Hana and Shingi sat there in continued disbelief, struck silent at the trauma and death their baby boy had to overcome without his parents to protect him.
"Soon after leaving Hope's Peak, we were rescued by and inducted into the Future Foundation, an organization made up mostly of former Hope's Peak alumni and faculty that were dedicated to wiping out the despair that had pervaded the world and returning it to normalcy. We spent the next two years assisting the Future Foundation with their mission, during which we underwent therapy to recover our stolen memories."
Komaru spoke next, revealing "Just before the Killing Game that Makoto took part in, we were separated and taken, along with the loved ones of Makoto's other classmates, to separate location on an island-city called Towa City. We lived out our lives for about a year after Makoto was rescued by the Future Foundation, until finally we were all forced out of our "homes" into the streets of Towa City, which was now stormed by an army of killer robots."
"Future Foundation sent help to rescue us, but it only resulted in one of Makoto's former classmates, Byakuya Togami, getting captured. The rest of us had become pawns in another Killing Game orchestrated by five children calling themselves the Warriors of Hope who wanted to rid the world of adults."
Hana and Shingi's eyes nearly bulged out of their heads at Komaru's revelation at what she, and likely the two of them as well, had to endure in order to survive.
"Eventually, with the help of another one of Makoto's former classmates, Toko Fukawa, we were able to defeat the Warriors of Hope and begin rebuilding Towa City."
Makoto then continued "Some time after that episode, I came across some surviving students from Hope's Peak Academy, and later found out that they were the 77th Class that Junko brainwashed into becoming her Remnants of Despair after killing their classmate Chiaki Nanami. Rather than bring them to the Future Foundation to be terminated, I took a gamble and subjected them to an experimental VR therapy called the Neo World Program, which would overwrite the despair Junko had brainwashed them with and given them back their original personalities."
The more Hana and Shingi listened to this tale, the dizzier they felt. Makoto's tale seemed more like a sci-fi movie than reality.
"However, it ended up going terribly wrong. Before she died, Junko copied her consciousness into an AI program, and planted it into the Neo World Program. She then started a new killing game from within cyberspace, with the goal of implanting her consciousness into the minds of the "deceased" students. Eventually I forced my way into the Neo World Program and with the help of her former pawn Hajime Hinata, we forced the Neo World Program to shut down, deleting the AI Junko and saving the 77th Class from despair."
Hana and Shingi's eyes lowered, unsure of what to make of Makoto's tale. Makoto's decisions were rife with ethical questions, even without the horrific consequences that Junko's AI had brought to the table. At the same time though, they felt that they couldn't rightly criticize him for his decisions under such awful circumstances.
"Eventually though…word got to the higher-ups about my actions in protecting the Remnants of Despair. As a result, the leaders of the Future Foundation put me on trial for treason."
Hana and Shingi couldn't hold back their gasps of shock; Makoto's ethics in his decisions might have been questionable, but to call it treason seemed like a stretch too far in their minds.
"Before my trial could take place however, the Chairman of the Future Foundation and one of the Division Leaders drugged us all unconscious and transported us to an underwater facility. Once we awoke, they used a recording of Monokuma to launch us into a Final Killing Game in order to tempt the only member of the 77th Class who hadn't been brainwashed into despair, Ryota Mitarai, into using his Ultimate Animator skills to brainwash the world with hope."
Hana and Shingi could barely hold back their tears, knowing that their baby boy had to endure two Killing Games where his life was on the line. Makoto himself had to hold back his own emotions, memories of all the dead bodies, including Kyoko's comatose body, flashing before his eyes.
"Just like the past Killing Game, a lot of us died in that underwater facility. Someone…close to me almost died for me back there…but Hajime and the 77th Class came to our rescue and stopped the brainwashing video from being played just in time for those of us who survived the ordeal to make it outside and start fresh."
*Sob*
Makoto and Komaru looked up at their Mother, who was now sobbing her eyes out, unable to wipe her tears away due to her weakened physical strength.
"Mom…?" Makoto asked.
"…I'm sorry…Makoto, my baby boy…I'm so sorry! You shouldn't…you shouldn't have had to go through all that. You had to endure that…trauma…all by yourself…I should have…protected you…but I left you and your sister all alone to die…I'm a terrible Mom!"
"Hana…" Shingi breathed, empathizing with his sobbing wife as the weight of his children's suffering threatened to crush him too.
Makoto scrambled over, holding Hana's hand as he assured her "You're not a terrible Mom, alright? You're the best Mom anyone could ask for! None of us could have predicted what Junko and Mukuro were planning. And I wasn't alone; I had my friends to back me up through thick and thin. So please, don't blame yourself…please, Mommy!"
*Sniffle* "Ma…Makoto…" Hana continued to cry as Makoto gently embraced his Mother, holding her like she did for him when he was a child.
Komaru looked over to her guilt-ridden Father and assured him "That goes for you too, Dad. We survived, and we're back together again. So please, don't feel guilty over what happened to us, okay?"
Eventually, both parents weakly nodded, allowing Makoto to let go and wipe his Mother's tears away.
Shingi and Hana shared a proud smile before the Naegi Patriarch asked "So…what have you two been doing after you both escaped?"
Makoto smiled as he explained "After we recovered from the Final Killing Game, the remains of the Future Foundation officially rescued Komaru and Junko's surviving captives from Towa City. Then my friends and I rebuilt Hope's Peak Academy." Makoto blushed as he informed them bashfully "I'm the uh…Headmaster now…"
HEADMASTER?! Makoto's parents thought incredulously as they tried to reconcile the shy, socially awkward boy they raised with the Hope's Peak Headmaster that Makoto had told them he had become.
As if reading their thoughts, Komaru nodded and exclaimed "It's true, and I'm a Language Arts teacher there too!"
Our daughter is a teacher…and our son is the HEADMASTER?! Hana felt dizzy as she muttered "…This is a lot to take in…the Killing Games were unbelievable as it is, but…"
Makoto smiled and nodded "Trust me, I know; there are days when I still wonder if there was someone more qualified to do the job. But, I haven't burned down the school yet…" I have Kyoko to thank though…
Shingi smiled and accepted the truth, replying "Then you must have a gift for the role…I know we're still trying to take in everything you just told us, but we're very proud of both of you. You've saved the world, and are teaching at a school…your Mother and I couldn't be prouder of the fine young adults we've raised." As Hana smiled at last and nodded in agreement, Shingi commented "Once we get out of here…I can't wait to see the school you've rebuilt!"
Makoto grinned and agreed "I can't wait to give you a tour!" And to introduce you to the beautiful woman who's stood by my side every step of the way!
Hana then asked "What of the Future Foundation? What happened to them?"
Makoto frowned and explained "After what happened in the Final Killing Game, we didn't want to be a part of it anymore and resigned. The remaining divisions soon dissolved, though some of the former members still help with rebuilding the world through other channels."
Komaru nodded, explaining "That's how we found you actually. See, a few months after we reopened Hope's Peak Academy, one of our past contacts in the Future Foundation came across you; you were emaciated and wounded, but alive. So we had you transported to this hospital and Mikan's been helping you recover ever since."
Hana and Shingi grew silent, the atmosphere becoming poignant before Hana asked "…How bad are we…?"
Before they could explain, the click clack of footsteps caused everyone to turn their heads, watching as Mikan returned with a dolly filled with various equipment. She came over and handed two mirrors to Makoto and Komaru, suggesting "The patients w…wanted to see their condition, right? These should help…"
Makoto and Komaru nodded, accepting the mirrors and showing their parents their reflections in the glass. Hana's eyes widened as she took in the various scratches that seemed to crisscross every inch of her cheeks, as well as her wild and unkempt hair. Shingi fared no better, shocked as his hair remained bloodied, some of it ripped out of his scalp.
"Um…I know it looks bad…but your injuries are superficial…so your hair will grow back and your cuts will heal…with time…"
The parents took a deep breath before Shingi smiled and nodded "Thank you…Tsumiki-san. We're happy to hear that…"
Mikan beamed and replied "That's good…anyways…I'm here because it's time for your physical the…therapy. Your muscles have weakened since you became comatose…and you need to regain your strength in order to be discharged…"
Makoto nodded, asking "Do you need us to leave…?"
Shaking her head, Mikan denied "Actually…your encouragement…might help them to recover fa…faster…"

"Come on, Mom! You can do it!"
"Come on, Dad! Show your arm who's boss!"
Makoto and Komaru cheered their parents on as they struggled to bend their arms from their elbows. The two patients had quickly regained use of their hands and wrists and were now focusing on regaining their full range of motion in their arms.
Hana and Shingi groaned as, with great effort, their palms finally touched their shoulders. Makoto and Komaru cheered as their parents sighed in relief, letting their arms fall back to their sides in exhaustion.
Mikan scribbled onto her notepad, informing them "You're making excellent recovery; this is just my initial prediction, but at this pace, I'd say you could regain full use of your arms by the weekend. Then we can focus on retraining your legs so you can walk again."
"And then we can go back home?" Shingi asked hopefully.
Hana sighed and chided "Don't rush it, dear."
Nevertheless, Mikan nodded and confirmed "Provided that no further complications or setbacks arise, yes. Once you regain use of your legs, you would be free to be discharged."
Makoto and Komaru smiled proudly at their parents, happy that they were making such impressive recoveries. A light bulb suddenly turned on in his head, making him turn to his sister and parents.
"Ano, would you excuse me for a minute? I just need to make a quick phone call."
Hana and Shingi nodded in acceptance, allowing Makoto to briefly step outside of their room and scroll through his contacts on his phone until he tapped the one he was looking for.
Holding it up to his ear, he greeted "Hey, Kyoko. How are things going over there?"

Makoto stepped back inside, smiling at his family now that he was finished with his phone call. Shingi opened his mouth to speak, only to grimace and glance down at his lower belly. It wasn't long before Hana replicated her husband's gesture.
Mikan frowned and asked "Ano…Mr. and Mrs. Na…egi…do you need to go to the ba…bathroom…?"
Blushing in embarrassment, the Naegi parents nodded, allowing Mikan to point to two folded up wheelchairs against the wall.
"Ano…Makoto…Komaru…would you mind…helping your parents into those wheel…chairs and helping them to the ba…bathroom?"
Makoto and Komaru looked to each other, nodding and rushing over to the wall, retrieving and setting up the wheelchairs. They then wheeled them over to their parents' bedsides.
"Just…hook your arms under their knees and arms and lift."
Makoto and Komaru followed Mikan's instructions, their parents' emaciated states making the task of carrying them easier.
As they walked around to grasp the handles, Mikan directed "Just follow me and I'll bring you to the bathrooms on this floor. They might need help to re…lieve themselves…so you should go in with them…"
"You get Dad, I'll get Mom?" Komaru offered.
Makoto nodded before they both pushed, wheeling their parents as they followed Mikan to the bathrooms, glancing down at their parents the entire way there.
Well, it's not glamorous…but given what we thought was the case just a week ago…I'll take this any day of the year… Makoto thought as he and Komaru shared a comforting smile, happy to have their parents back in their lives and to have the opportunity to take care of them in their hour of need.
You were both there to take care of us as kids…now it's our turn to return the favor!
