He was done trying. He went on for the longest time, until he heard a car door shut and feet pounding towards him.
" Sam?!" he could clearly hear Dean yell.
He couldn't bring his voice to answer. Cries kept breaking out. Dean was stunned.
" A-are you okay? Are you hurt!?" Dean yelled over the thunderous storm. Concern blared from his voice.
Sam struggled to compose himself so he just shook his head. Still laying on the ground. Each drop of rain giving him some relief. Some stress melting away.
" Jesus, what's wrong?"
Sam still just shook his head because Dean didn't understand, he never would. No one does. No one will. He is all alone. The quivers from the cold wrecked him. The sobbing made him cough, struggling for breath. Dean looked terrified, not know what to do meanwhile he was getting soaked. He cupped Sam's cheek, but the kid turned away. He could feel the deep chill in Sam's face. He had to get them inside. Dean scooped up the teen with little effort and ran him inside, stopping when he got to the tub. The area was small, but he was able to turn the shower and force Sam to sit with him. They sat in the tub letting the warm water spray the chill off of their bones. Dean didn't know why Sam was breaking down but it was contagious. He started to cry. Sam laying on his chest, holding his arm for dear life. They both sat there with the flow of water, loud booms of thunder outside keeping their voices from reaching neighbors.
Life sucked for them. That was for sure. Their relationships crumbled ever so slowly over the years. Girlfriends became higher priorities. Booze and beer too. Cheap escape was all they knew. The harsh reality of their lives pounded effortlessly on their souls. They were so damaged already it didn't take much to knock them down.
Their shoes and clothes were soaked, but caring about such things was too much effort. Too much. They were stuck in their heads. Lost to the world. A whirlpool of emotions. Regret, shame, humiliation, fear, stress. All piled on top of one another like LEGOs. They laid their for the longest time. Crying like the other wasn't there.
Sobs turned into moans and hitched breathing. Pain turned into exhaustion.
" I can't anymore Dean. This isn't life," Sam spouted with a small sobby voice.
Dean closed his eyes and he understood.
" I know Sammy. I know," Dean whispered.
Silence is the most powerful scream.
