Chapter 2

Kevin and Kylie waited at the bus stop for their school bus to come. As they waited, they looked over to see a pet adoption event down the street.

"Let's go look at the dogs," Kevin said.

As they looked at the dogs, they found a golden retriever. The golden retriever licked them. A female volunteer walked over to them.

"I see you've met Scout," the volunteer said.

"He's so cute," Kylie said.

"He's 2-and-a-half years old," the volunteer said. "And he's completely housebroken, loves kids, and gets along great with other dogs. Would you like to adopt him?"

"We don't have any money," Kevin said.

"He's free," the volunteer said. "All you have to do is sign a form and he's yours."

"Okay," Kevin said.

"Kevin," Kylie said.

"I'll go get the form," the volunteer said, walking off.

"Kevin," Kylie said. "Dad said no pets. He said we're not responsible enough."

"Here's what we'll do," Kevin said. "We'll take him home and hide him. We'll secretly take great care of him. When Dad sees how responsible we are, he'll let us keep him."

"I don't know," Kylie said.

"Look at his face," Kevin said.

"Oh, okay," Kylie said. "But they won't allow him on the school bus."

"That's okay," Kevin said. "We'll walk home."

Half an hour later, Kevin and Kylie walked into through the kitchen door with Scout. Kylie quickly led Scout upstairs right before Kyle walked into the kitchen.

"Dad," Kevin said.

"There you are!" Kyle exclaimed. "Where's your sister?"

"Upstairs," Kevin replied.

"Kylie!" Kyle hollered.

Kylie came downstairs.

"Where have you two been?" Kyle asked.

"We missed the bus," Kevin replied.

"So we walked home," Kylie said.

"Next time you miss the bus, call me," Kyle said. "I don't want you two walking home by yourselves."

Kyle sneezed.

"Bless you," Kevin said.

"Thanks," Kyle said.

Kyle sneezed again.

"When you two were walking home, did you pet any dogs?" Kyle asked.

"No," Kevin replied.

"Good," Kyle said. "I'm very allergic to dogs."

Kyle walked off and Kevin looked at Kylie.

"I guess we can't keep him," Kylie said.

"We'll have to start looking for a new home for him," Kevin said.
