Chapter 4
Kyle sat at a barstool in the diner talking to Freddie.
"Do you know anyone who's looking to get a dog?" Kyle asked.
"Sorry," Freddie replied. "I do not."
Freddie leaned down and whispered into Kyle's ear.
"But a friend of mine trains dogs," Freddie whispered.
"For like racetracks?" Kyle asked.
"Something like that," Freddie replied.
"Mr. Haskell!" Kyle shouted. "That's awful!"
"What?" Freddie asked. "He trains them to run around his property and sniff out truffles."
"Oh," Kyle said. "I thought you meant… Never mind."
"So," Freddie said. "What do you say I ask my friend if he wants to adopt the dog?"
"Let's see," Kyle said. "I'd rather give the dog to a loving family than to a person who will use him to sniff out truffles."
Olivia walked over to them.
"Hey, Kyle," Olivia said. "I just clocked out so we can go on our date."
"Okay," Kyle said. "Let's go."
"Let me know if you change your mind about the dog," Freddie said before walking off.
"You got a dog?" Olivia asked.
"My kids did without my consent," Kyle replied. "But we can't keep it because I'm allergic to dogs."
"I have some cousins from out of town who have been looking into getting a dog," Olivia said. "What kind of dog is it?"
"He's a golden retriever named Scout," Kyle replied.
"I'll give them a call and see if they want him," Olivia said.
"Thanks," Kyle said.
