Sydney and Olive were both sitting in the living room looking at their phones as Sydney said, "Can you believe it? Now Emmy and Sophia have dates to the dance too. We're the only two people in school now who have no one to go with." Then Olive looking a little nervous said, "Well... if you want... you want to be my date?" Sydney then casually said, "Eh. Might as well walk in and show everyone we're okay to mingle like singles." Olive then said, "Well... I was thinking more like I could show up at your house with a limo, and we got on like a real couple and..." Then Sydney said, "Wait. That's a great idea. I could wear one of my dad's old suits and we could dress up like we're an old 90's prom couple. That would be so hilarious and make a great photo op." Then Olive said, "Oh. Well not exactly what I was thinking but..." Then Sydney said, "Oh, it'll be so cool. You can dress up like Brittney Spears, and I'll be like a young Justin Timberlake. It'll be so fun."
Then Sydney's father: Max, and Sydney's grandmother: Judy stepped into the room as Sydney said, "Hey dad. Do you have any old suits of yours that would fit me?" Judy then said, "Oh, in the attic. I never could get rid of these cute things." Sydney then rushed up the stairs as she said, "Thanks." Once Sydney was out of the room, Olive stood up and with a nervous face said, "Um... Mr. Reynolds... can I ask you a question?" Max then casually said, "Sure Olive. What's up?" Olive then still nervous said, "Well... I was hoping... um, I... I wanted to ask you if it was okay that... I was hoping to ask you for... for your blessing to ask Sydney out to the school dance?" Max looking confused said, "What do you mean? I let you two hang out all the time." Then Olive said, "No. I mean... I'd like to ask Sydney out to the school dance?" Suddenly Judy covered her mouth for a moment, and then said, "Oh my gosh. Olive... are you saying that you..." Olive nodded and said, "Yes." Max looking confused said, "Wait. What are you two..." Max then stopped as he took a moment to see the look of pain, confusion, and hope all mixed into Olive's face. Max suddenly snapped to attention and said, "Oh my gosh. I didn't realize. But yes Olive. Of course you have my blessing. You're her best friend in the whole wide world. You're practically already family to us." Then with a caring but concerned look in her eyes Judy said, "But does Sydney know how you feel?" With a worried look, Olive turned her head and said, "No. And I'm more scared than I ever have been in my life to tell her." Then Judy said, "Well... if you want my advice... you can't dance around the topic forever. You have to find a way to let her see how you feel." Olive then said, "See how I feel? Hmm..."
Days later: the doorbell in the house rang as Sydney rushed down the stairs wearing a button down suit and pants. As Sydney got near the door, she said, "I got it! See you later guys!" Then Sydney opened the door, and her eyes immediately widened at what she saw. Standing in front of her was Olive in a pink sleeveless dress that went down to her knees with high heel shoes, and her hair tied back with a ribbon behind it. Olive had light shadows of eyeliner on, along with lipstick, and panted fingernails. Sydney stood in silent astonishment for a moment, and then said, "Olive?" Olive then said, "Hey Sydney. You like how I look?" Sydney simply stood in silent astonishment as she said, "I... I... "
Later that evening: Sydney was walking around the school dance, when suddenly she saw Max pouring drinks. Sydney rushed over to Max and said, "Dad, what are you doing here?" Max then said, "I'm a chaperone. I didn't tell you I was because I knew you'd feel weird if you knew ahead of time." Sydney rolled her eyes and said, "Well this is by far not the weirdest thing I'm experiencing tonight." Max then said, "What do you mean? And where's Olive?" Sydney then said, "She's in the bathroom doing her hair. Yes, Olive is doing her hair now. Do you have any idea of what this is doing to me!?" A confused looking Max said, "I don't quite understand what's upsetting you Sydney. Olive is obviously just trying to look nice." Sydney then said, "Exactly. She's trying to look nice for me." Then Max said, "And how is that wrong?" Sydney now looking very troubled and confused said, "I... I don't know." Olive then from nearby walked over to Sydney and said, "Hey Sydney. Wanna dance?" Sydney looked at Olive with a frustrated face as she said, "Oh, and you're a dancer now too tonight. Any other changes I should know about?" Olive then said, "Sydney, is something wrong?" Sydney then said, "Yes. I mean no. I mean... Uggg!" Then Sydney rushed out of the large room. Max then looked at Olive and said, "Please. Just give her some time." Then Max rushed out of the room and followed Sydney.
Sydney was now leaning up against one of the school lockers in the hallway. Max then leaned against another locker next to Sydney and said, "You know it's not polite to leave your date alone."A frustrated Sydney then said, "Olive is not my date dad! At least, I didn't think she was. Now I... I don't what she is to me dad." Max then said, "Well what is Olive to you Sydney? What's going through your mind tonight?" Sydney then took a deep breath and said, "What's going through my mind tonight? Well... I open the door of my house this evening to see this beautiful and gorgeous young woman that I instantly feel attracted to. And I wanna tell my best friend that I think I'm falling in love with this beautiful and gorgeous young woman. And then I realize... my best friend is this beautiful and gorgeous young woman. And now... I think I'm going to lose my best friend." Max then said, "Well Sydney... you might soon lose Olive as your best friend. But what you're going to get in it's place could be something better." Sydney then said, "Ugg. I wish this stupid dance didn't happen and she didn't get all dressed up and..." Max then said, "Sydney... Olive was going to let you know she felt either way with or without the dance. But the most important question now is... how do you feel about her?" Sydney then moved her head over to the door of the large room the dance was in, and saw Olive standing by herself. Sydney stared at Olive for a long moment, and then made a little smile. Sydney then looked at Max and said, "I still don't know. How can I ask someone to dance with me, when they've seen me cry while watching Guardians of the Galaxy?" Max smirked and said, "Your best friend would."
Moments later, in the middle of the dance: Sydney walked over to Olive who had her back turned to her and said, "Hey Olive." Olive then turned her face to look at Sydney with tears in her eyes as she said, "Hey." Sydney now looking concerned said, "Olive, were you crying?" Olive then said, "Maybe. I... I'm sorry Sydney. This was all a big mistake trying to dress up like this for you and..." Sydney then said, "No Olive. Please. I'm sorry. I always knew you liked me. I just never knew you liked me, liked me." Olive then brushing some tears from her face said, "Well hey. This is new for me too." Sydney then said, "I'm sorry. It's just... I've always told you about whoever at school I'm starting to have a crush on. And now... you're one of them." Olive's eyes widened as she look at Sydney, still with tears in her eyes, as she smiled and said, "Really?" Sydney made a small nod as she smiled and said, "Yeah. But I do have one question for you." Olive then said, "What's that?" Sydney then said, "How do I show my best friend I want her and me to become something more?" Olive then moved her face forward and quickly gave Sydney a peck on the cheek. Olive smirked and then said, "Maybe do something like that?" Sydney then smirked as she brought her face forward and then kissed Olive herself. However this time, the two girls remain lip-locked together as they wrapped their arms around the other and remained in an embrace for a long moment. Then once their kiss ended, the girls then gently rested their foreheads on the others', and simply looked into each other's eyes and smiled.
