Author's Note

Thanks so much if you stuck around for this next chapter! It's a little longer than the last one, and has actual plot in it rather than just being an introduction like the first chapter. In case you didn't get it in the last chapter, I've changed the timeline a little so ROTG takes place about 20 years before the movie Tangled, Frozen is three years after Tangled, and Frozen 2 is a year and a few months after Frozen. Please, please, PLEASE review, because I really want to know what people think about this. I really have no idea if people like this right now, or if it is even worth continuing.

Chapter 2: Introductions

Around the same time that Jack Frost discovered Rapunzel, two girls were playing with snow in a ballroom. Two young princesses, named Elsa and Anna. Elsa was special. She was like Jack. But she was not dead, nor immortal, nor a guardian. She was simply an eight-year-old girl born with ice powers. Anna, her sister, was ordinary.

The day Elsa struck Anna's head with her powers changed both of their lives forever. The King and Queen had to take Anna to the trolls, who healed her. But, they also took away her memories of magic so that she would not get hurt again.

The trolls also gave Elsa a prophecy. They told Elsa her power would get stronger, but that it could also be dangerous. They told her she had to learn to control it. So Elsa isolated herself for the next thirteen years, scared that she would hurt someone else.

What the trolls didn't tell the king and queen was that they would tell someone else about Elsa's powers. And that someone else was North, otherwise known as Santa Clause, who is also the leader of the Guardians.

When North heard about Elsa, he had no idea what to do. He had never heard of someone born with that much power. Sure, there was the occasional witch or warlock, but what Elsa had was completely different. It was more like Jack's powers, North realised with a start. But from what it sounded like, she didn't pose a threat to anyone. North eventually decided to keep an eye on her, but not to tell the other guardians. No need to worry them, especially if there wasn't a real problem. Right? North sighed. There was only one person he could go to.

That night, North went to the skylight in his workshop and watched as the moonlight crept through it. He asked the Man in the Moon what to do, and his face paled at the answer he got. He had never, ever expected Manny to tell him to do something like that. Ever. But he knew what he had to do now. Jack must never, ever know about her.

Jack sat in the window of her tower, as he had every week for the last three months. There was the young princess Rapunzel, reading a book in a chair by her fireplace. She looked so peaceful… If only she knew who she really was… Jack shook his head. No matter how much it pained him to admit it, he couldn't tell her about her past. And anyway, it wasn't like she could even see him. His thoughts trailed off, and he realized she was… Looking at him? Impossible. She was probably just looking out the window. It was just Jack's wishful thinking. But she kept staring. Jack stared back.

"Hi," he said, and she jumped. Jack's eyes widened. "You can see me?" he asked incredulously. The girl gave a miniscule nod.

"Your Jack. Jack Frost." She said. Jack could not believe it. This girl could see him, and even knew who he was? She believed in him!

"Yeah, I am. How did you figure that out?" She walked over to a big bookshelf in the corner, and pulled out a stack of books.

"Reading!" She said, sounding proud. "At first I just thought you were a fairytale. You were in all these stories," she gestured at the top few books in the stack. They looked like fairy tales and children's stories. "But then, I started seeing frost on my windowsill sometimes. And it's summer! So I thought, 'what if he is real?' and I asked Mother to bring back a book about Jack Frost, and this is what I found!" Jack flinched at the word 'mother'. If only she knew… He brought his attention to the big book in her lap. He was surprised to see it was about him!

"Wow!" He laughed. "I didn't realize I was so popular!" She flipped pages excitedly, stopping halfway through.

"It has all these accounts of sightings in it, and when I got to this part…" She stuck her finger in the middle of the page. "It says you are a guardian. A guardian of children. So I thought, 'maybe he's watching me' And now I'm right!" she let out a laugh. " I was right! I can't believe I was right!" Jack chuckled at her excitement. Little kids were just so darn cute sometimes! He looked at her.

"That's crazy you found me! But I'm glad. Now we can be friends!" The girl's eyes widened.

"Friends? I've never had a friend before!" Jack's heart broke for her. Was he the only person she had talked to for eight years other than her adopted mother? That was just so wrong. That's not how childhood should be.

"Of course we can be friends. We can have fun together! And snowball fights!" Rapunzel looked down.

"I'm not allowed to leave the tower. Mother says it's too dangerous outside." Jack inwardly groaned. Of course her 'mother' would say that.

"We don't have to go outside to have fun! Besides, look at this!" Jack grabbed his staff and shot up into the air, carrying the girl with him.

"Wow!" She laughed. "You can fly?"

"Of course I can! How else did I get into your tower in the first place?"

"Oh right. I'm silly!" Rapunzel laughed.

"Watch this!" Jack still had another surprise. He brought up his staff, and shot a blast of snow out the end. Rapunzel gasped.

"Can you do more? Please?" Jack laughingly agreed, until the whole tower was full of ice and snow. He brought Rapunzel down, and she immediately dove into one of the newly formed snowbanks. Then, she immediately jumped out, shivering.

"It's freezing!" she stuttered.

"Well of course it is, it's snow!" Jack looked at her. "Wait, have you never seen snow before?"

"Well, kind of..." Rapunzel replied hesitantly. "I've read about it, and caught snowflakes from the window, but I've never touched this much of it before!"

"Okay," Jack looked at her. "Snow has two rules. You have to dress warmly, and you have to have fun!" Rapunzel nodded, smiling again.

"Do you have a jacket around here somewhere?" Jack asked her. She told him where it was, and he flew over and threw it down to her. "There. That should be good. Let the fun begin!" As soon as he threw the first snowball, the little girl was a giggling mess, and honestly, so was Jack. It felt so good to just have fun, especially with a girl who had never seen snow before. Every little thing amazed her. The tiny snowflakes, the huge snowballs, the chunks of ice. Even the gross slushy bits that had started to melt by the fire. Oops. Jack cleaned those up with a wave of his staff. He didn't want all the snow to melt and the tower to get all wet.

Hours later, Rapunzel was finally all tired out. Her face was flushed with cold, and she kept laughing for no reason. After Jack had made all the snow vanish, he went over to her.

"I have to leave soon," He told her. Immediately, her face fell.

"Will you come back?" She whispered. "I had so much fun today." Jack was appalled that she thought he wouldn't come back.

"Of course I'm coming back! I'll be here again in a few days. I'm never going to leave you on your own again." Rapunzel sighed in relief. She had loved playing with her new friend! Just as Jack was about to float on the window, she tugged on the edge of his hoodie.

"If you're a guardian, and you were here, what were you guarding me from?" Jack was speechless. He couldn't tell her the truth, but he didn't want to lie either.

"I'm the guardian of fun." Jack shrugged. "I guess I'm here to make sure you stay happy!" Rapunzel laughed.

"I can't wait to see you again! Bye bye, Jack Frost!" She waved as he flew away, and she kept waving until he was just a speck in the distance.

As Jack flew away, he had a lot of thinking to do. He knew North had told him not to interact with Rapunzel, but she could see him! She believed in him! She had actually figured out that he was real! He just had to talk to her. And have a snowball fight with her. And promise to come back. If he was being honest with himself.. Well, she reminded Jack of his own younger sister. The one he hadn't seen in hundreds of years. The one that had grown old while he never aged, and was almost certainly dead by now. He had never wanted to check.

He could see North's workshop approaching, and decided not to tell the other guardians what he had done that day. Even though it was going against what North and the Man in the Moon had told him, he wasn't hurting anybody. He was helping somebody. He was helping a little girl have fun, and that was his job.

Having convinced himself, Jack went to talk to North and see if he could steal a few cookies. As an immortal guardian, he didn't need to eat, but he could still enjoy eating sometimes. Anyway, Christmas cookies from the North Pole in the middle of summer were one of the best things ever.

"Hey North!" He yelled as he flew through a window and into the workshop. "Got any cookies lying around?" North gestured distractedly to a plate in the corner. Jack chuckled. Of course, North had a plate of cookies in his work area.

"Whatcha workin' on?" Jack said through a mouthful of cookie.

"Nothing, nothing!" North said, clearing off his desk by shoving everything in it into a drawer. "Just an idea. Any problems with the princess?"

"She's fine," Jack said, not wanting to keep talking about her. He was a terrible liar, and didn't want North to find out he had talked to her. "But she seems lonely."

"We could bring her a pet?" North suggested. "Something small, low maintenance, but that could still be her friend?" Jack actually thought that was a good idea.

"That's a great idea! Like what?" North didn't have any ideas. They decided to go ask the other guardians.

"Okay, it's not an emergency, but North and I had an idea!" Jack announced once they had gathered all the guardians at the North Pole. Tooth sighed in relief. Oops. She must have thought they were in trouble. "We thought that we should get Rapunzel a pet, so she's not so lonely."

"That's a great idea!" Tooth exclaimed. "What about a hummingbird? Or a crow? Or a pigeon? Oo, what about a parrot?" Her wings buzzed with excitement.

"Maybe not," North said carefully. "It has to be something that won't make a mess." Tooth sank down in her seat, disappointed. But she knew he was right. It also had to be something that an eight year old girl could take care of.

As they all sat there, considering their options, Sandy had an idea. A light bulb made of golden sand appeared above his head, but none of the other guardians noticed. He sighed. It was so hard to get the others to listen to him! Eventually, he clapped to get their attention. Everyone looked at him, and a picture of a small lizard with big eyes and a curly tail appeared above him.

"A chameleon!" Jack exclaimed. "That's perfect!"

"Of course!" Tooth brightened up. "It's small, can take care of itself, won't make a mess… I don't know why I didn't think of that!" Jack and North glanced at each other, then away as they agreed with Tooth. She had only been thinking of birds as options… Finally, Bunny spoke up. Jack realized he hadn't spoken for the whole conversation!

"Well," He started, "I was thinking chameleon the whole time!" They all gazed at him doubtfully, especially Sandy. Sandy knew all about Bunny taking credit for other people's ideas…

A couple days later, they had secured a chameleon and Jack was ready to take it to Rapunzel. He hoped she would like it as he set off to her tower.

I know I already said it at the top, but please review! I want to know if people like this story! I'll probably update again tomorrow, just because with quarantine I have a ton of extra time. Please follow/favorite so you can keep up with updates! I would really appreciate it!
