Chapter Four: Return
"Sir Hellsing, they're back!" William announced as he entered the study. He stood up straight with his hands behind his back. Arthur paused reading the paper in his hand and turned around in his seat to look at his butler.
"Ah thank you." Arthur thanked as placed the paper down and started to stand. "Would you like to walk with me William?" he asked as he walked towards the door where his head butler still stood.
"Of course, sir Hellsing." William replied with a slight bow as Arthur walked by him.
"Fantastic!" Arthur laughed as he stepped into the hallway. William closed the door and followed Arthur down the hall. The two then headed down the stairs to the first floor. They then headed to the front door. William then opened the door. When the door opened, Arthur was surprised by the sight before him.
Walter was sitting there on Alucard's coffin, bloody and battered, smoking a cigarette. There was blood running down his face and right arm. His left arm was broken; he had a deep wound on his left side and was covered in bruises. "Bloody hell Walter, what happened?!" Arthur asked, completely baffled by the sight of his young butler. Walter looked at him tiredly and slowly stood up.
"I just ran into some unexpected trouble, that's all." Walter answered as he removed his cigarette from his mouth using his right hand, wincing as pain shot through his arm, and exhaled a puff of smoke. "William, do me a favor and drag this bloody bastard down to the basement please." Walter, somewhat, pleaded tiredly.
"Of course little brother." William responded with a small smile before moving to grab the black coffin. William was relieved to see his brother back safe and sound.
"Call our private doctor while you're at it, William." Arthur ordered as William dragged the coffin inside.
"Already done sir!" William called in response as he started down towards the basement.
Arthur then ushered Walter inside. Once inside the doors closed and the two headed up stairs to Walter's room. "So, what exactly happened?" Arthur asked as they walked.
"We were most unfortunate to encounter a werewolf while we were in Poland." Walter answered. Arthur looked at his butler with wide eyes.
"A werewolf you say!? I didn't know there were any left, and in Poland of all places." Arthur muttered.
"Yes, he seemed like the last of his kind." Walter added.
"Incredible." Arthur started, "what was he like?" he asked his butler.
"He was incredibly strong and agile; I could hardly land a hit on the creature." Walter replied.
"I see. So, besides your encounter with the werewolf, what happened?" Arthur asked. Walter didn't answer right away as he debated on what to say. 'I'll just tell him what I know he wants to hear.' Walter thought.
"We successfully destroyed the plant as ordered sir." Walter informed him.
"Ha-ha I knew you would! Good job boy!" Arthur congratulated and gave Walter a hard pat on the back. Walter stumbled slightly and winced as Arthur hit the wound on his shoulder. 'Bloody hell, that hurts!' Walter thought as he stood up straight once more. The two then stopped in front of Walter's door. Walter opened the door to his room and walked in.
He then walked over to his bed and sat down. Walter winced as he sat down and then leaned back onto his mattress. Arthur walked in next, grabbed a chair that sat near a desk to the right of the room, and dragged it over to the bed. He then sat down in the chair and leaned back. Arthur then crossed his arms and legs, as he stared at Walter.
"Is there something else you want sir?" Walter asked as he stared tiredly at the ceiling above.
"No, I'm just here to keep you company until the doctor arrives." Arthur answered. Arthur then glanced at the cigarette in Walter's mouth and unfolded his arms. He then leaned over, quickly snatched the Cigarette from Walter's mouth, and put it out using the bottom of his shoe.
"Huh? Wait, sir, what are you doing?!" Walter asked as he sat up and looked at Arthur.
"No smoking, until your wounds are healed. Is that clear?" Arthur ordered strictly. Walter looked at him with shock and his mouth hanging open slightly. Walter then huffed, turned his head to the left, and glared at the wall. He then glanced back at Arthur with irritation.
"Understood... Sir Hellsing." Walter replied slightly upset with the order.
Arthur smiled at the boy, "good, I'm glad we have an understanding." He said as he opened his arms wide and then placed them in his lap. Arthur once again leaned back in the chair, a smile, still etched on his face. "I see you took quite the beating... I thought sending Alucard would have lessened the damage..." Arthur added his smile fading.
"Probably would have if the fucking bastard hadn't left me to fight that wolf man on my own..." Walter replied in irritation. "How bad was William?" Walter asked as he turned his head to look at his employer. Arthur sighed in response making the young butler chuckle. "He couldn't have been that bad." the young butler said.
"He took my whisky, lectured me in front of one of my closest friends and fellow member of the round table, and threw a pillow at me..." the man said simply.
"Lectured you?" Walter questioned before he thought about what could have made William do such a thing. The young butler narrowed his eyes slightly. "Seriously? While I was busy fighting ghouls and a werewolf you were trying to get laid..." Walter growled. He watched as Arthur turned his head to the side and started whistling. Just then William walked in with the doctor.
"Doctor David is here now sir." William announced with a slight bow.
"Ah perfect timing, Thank you William!" Arthur responded feeling relieved to have a distraction and excuse to leave. William bowed once more before glancing over at his brother and taking his leave.
"Welcome Doctor! I'm glad you could come on such short notice!" Arthur greeted the man. Doctor David sighed, "Just let me see my patient sir Arthur Hellsing." he said with irritation. 'Hehe looks like he isn't too happy about being woken up at such an ungodly hour and having to work.' Walter thought with a smirk.
"Ah yes of course." Arthur said, his left eye twitching, as he tried remaining polite. He then walked past the doctor and out of the room, shutting the door behind him. Once Arthur left the doctor turned his attention to his patient.
"Well hello Walter. I never thought I'd have to patch you up." Doctor David stated as he walked over to the bed. He then took a seat in the chair previously occupied by Arthur and placed his case full of medical supplies in his lap.
"You and me both doc." Walter muttered loud enough for the doctor to hear. Doctor David chuckled and leaned forward. The doctor used his hands to part Walter's hair in order to find the wound there. He continued to do this until he spotted it. The wound was a shallow gash on the right side of his head. The doctor dropped his hands and opened his case. He then grabbed a roll of bandages and started to wrap the bandage around Walter's head. Once he was done the doctor made Walter take off his vest and dress shirt.
The doctor then examined the large, semi-deep, gash on Walter's side as well as his right shoulder. "Looks like you got lucky with that wound on your side." Doctor David stated as he started cleaning the wounds. He then wrapped the bandage around Walter's torso and shoulder. "Anywhere else?" Doctor David questioned when he was done.
"Well I think all that's left is may broken arm." Walter replied as he looked at it.
"Hm I see." The doctor muttered as he took out some gauze and an adhesive bandage. David then gently felt around for the break. "I think it's a relatively simple break. should heal rather quickly" Doctor David said as he gently grabbed Walter's arm. "I'm going to position your arm for the cast. Try not to move it." He informed Walter. Walter did as he was told and watched as Doctor David wrapped the gauze and adhesive bandage around his arm from his wrist to his elbow. "There all done." He said when he was finished. "And now for the sling." The doctor muttered as he shuffled around in his case. He then took out the sling and placed it on the small table by the bed. "There, make sure you have someone to help you put that on ok?" The doctor told Walter as he closed his case and stood up.
"Alright I will. Thanks for the service." Walter responded as he looked up at Doctor David.
"No problem, just get some rest now." David replied with a small smile as he placed his equipment back into his bag.
"I'll be back to check on that arm periodically." The doctor informed as he walked over to the door and opened it.
"Alright I got it. See you then." Walter said. "
"See ya Walter. Don't overdo it ya hear?" Doctor David said.
"I'll try." Walter responded before Doctor David left the room. Once the doctor had left Walter sighed and decided it was time to finally get some rest. 'Well I won't be doing much for a while.' Walter thought with a yawn as he lay down. He then closed his eyes and slowly drifted off to sleep.
William stood by the base of the stairs, leaning against the railing. Just then he heard foot steps and turned his head towards the noise. Upon seeing the doctor he stood up straight. "How bad were his injuries? It was hard for me to tell with all of the blood." William questioned.
"Besides his arm and the gash on his side he was fine." David replied as he reached the bottom of the stairs. "The small cuts and bruises should heal quickly." he added.
"I see... I'll be sure to keep him from doing much until he is better." William said with a sigh. He knew his brother wasn't going to be happy about sitting around doing nothing but it is for the best.
"How is your left eye William?" David asked suddenly as he looked at the older butler. William closed his eye and sighed. he then opened his eyes and turned his head to look at the old doctor.
"I'm losing sight in it more each day." William told the doctor quietly. "If this keeps up I don't think I'll be able to see out of it at all..." he added solemnly as he looked down at his hands. His sight was clear in one eye but the other one was more fuzzy. David hummed in understanding.
"Walter still doesn't know about that last mission you took that injured your left retina, does he?" David asked even though he was already sure of what the answer would be.
"You mean the one where I almost lost my eye completely... no, I didn't want him to find out..." William replied. "That was the reason I went to see you after getting back and returned home long after I was expected to... It was bad enough you told sir Arthur." he added as he closed his eyes. "I haven't been sent on a job since. Walter has taken the jobs over completely."
"The man may not always act like it but he does care about you two." David said as he glanced at the young man beside him. "Your more then just butlers to him." the old doctor told him. William smiled slightly as he heard the older man speak.
"Yes, I know..." William said quietly. He looked at David. "Thank you again for all that you do." He added.
"It's my job, and one I'm happy to do." David said with a smile. Just then William handed the man his money.
"Here, your usual payment, a well as extra for the late night service and continued silence. As requested by sir Arthur himself." William said. David reached for the money and took it from William's hand.
"That man I swear... Tell the bastard he doesn't need to pay extra for me to keep my mouth shut. His father was an old friend, and one I miss deeply." David said with a tired sigh. William smiled in response.
"I'll accompany you to the door." William said with a bow.
"Thank you." David said before the two started towards the door.
Arthur sat in his study staring into his cup of tea. He sighed before sitting back and staring up at the ceiling. just then he heard someone knock on his door. "Come in." He replied. He heard the door open and looked to see William standing there. "How's Walter?" Arthur asked.
"Doctor David says he will be fine but recommends he relax for a while. Most of his injuries will heal quickly but he wont be able to do much with one arm. " William informed the man. Arthur hummed in understanding and turned his attention forward.
"I suppose that means you'll have to do more work..." Arthur said as he picked up his cup of tea. He took a sip and held the cup at chest level. "How's your eye?" he asked quietly.
"As I told the doctor, my sight is getting worse but I'll manage." William informed him.
"Perhaps I should see about getting an monocle for you." Arthur said mostly to himself. William chuckled in response.
"I can assure you my eye sight isn't that bad yet, sir." William replied. Arthur placed his tea down and stood up. William watched as he slowly made his way to the window. "Sir Arthur? May I ask what seems to be on your mind?" the young man asked as he slowly walked over and stood beside Arthur.
"So many things, William..." Arthur replied solemnly as he stared out of the window. William stood beside the man with slight worry. "I am thinking about my position, you and Walter, the future... Lillian..."
"I brought her up earlier, you didn't react then but it's making you think of her now..." William said simply in understanding. "You miss her. She left but you never stopped loving her." he added.
"Your right I didn't..." Arthur replied with a sigh. He then turned his head to look at his oldest butler. "Just like I've never stopped worrying for you and Walter. You the most..." he added.
"Me sir?" William questioned obviously confused. Arthur nodded in response.
"Yes, you have always taken on the most responsibility. As an older brother myself I can understand, despite how Richard can be sometimes." He said with an exasperated sigh at the end. "You take so much on and try so hard to hide how exhausted you are. You serve me, you clean, you cook, you protect me and this mansion, and you do your best to be a good brother all at the same time." Arthur explained. "If the doctor hadn't told me about your injury you'd probably still be out there fighting vampires and ghouls until you dropped..." he finished with a sigh.
"Well, When you put it that way..." William muttered as he looked away. Just then he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked back at Arthur.
"When your brother is feeling better I want you to let him handle more. Its time he grew up and started getting use to being a true butler of the Hellsing family." Arthur said in a serious tone. "You will be my personal butler and bodyguard while Walter takes on the rest of your duties and any missions." he explained.
"I understand but I do believe we should continue to rotate who cooks each day." William suggested simply. "It will make me feel like less of a waste of space..." he added with a sigh.
"William... very well." Arthur agreed. "But understand that no matter what changes, you will never be a waste of space." He added before turning to walk back towards his desk.
Well that's all for this chapter. What did you think? Good? Bad? What? Please let me know what you think.
