Chapter 6
Walter was awoken later when his door creaked open. Walter's eyes snapped open as the sound reached his ears. Next he heard footsteps as the intruder took a few steps inside the dark room. It was then that Walter sat up and looked at the intruder. He then heard the intruder gasp and fall back against the door.
The door then clicked closed as Walter got out of his bed. He looked towards the intruder and saw frightened icy blue eyes staring at the door. Walter took a few cautious steps forward, studying the intruder as he moved. It was then He noticed that they had long hair, wore a pair of big, round glasses and a dress. Even in the dark Walter could see these but color wise was a bit iffy.
The next thing he knew he was standing right in front of his intruder. Walter reached over to the wall and flipped the switch, turning on the lights. The intruder closed their eyes as the light suddenly came on and Walter got a better look at them. 'Huh? It's just a little girl.' He thought as he continued to look down at the frightened blonde haired child. He then slowly knelt down in front of the girl rubbing her eyes.
The girl looked back at him and jumped slightly when she saw how close he was. She scooted back until her back hit the now closed door. "Whoa it's alright now; I'm not going to hurt you." Walter told the girl in a gentle, quiet tone and reached over to give her a pat on the head. Hearing this, the girl seemed to relax a bit and looked curiously up at Walter as he stroked her head. "So tell me, what is your name and why are you in my room?" Walter asked. "My name is Integra, I got lost when a man was escorting me to my father's office." The girl replied.
'Wait her father's office? Could this be sir Hellsing's daughter?' he asked himself. "You're Sir Arthur's daughter, aren't you?" Walter asked the four year old. Integra nodded in response. Walter's face turned thoughtful as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a pocket watch. 'Hmm sir Hellsing won't even be in his study. He will be in the meeting room on the third floor.' Walter thought as he looked at the time.
Walter then snapped his watch shut and returned it to his pocket. "Your father isn't in his study anymore." Walter told Integra as he started to stand. He then held his hand out for Integra to grab. Integra responded by gratefully taking his hand. Walter then smiled and helped her up.
"Come on I have to go see your father anyways." Walter said as he opened his door. Walter then walked out into the hall with Integra, not even bothering to shut his door. He then led her down the hall and to the stairs. Once at the stairs Walter took Integra down to the first floor. From there he walked to the kitchen.
"Walter!" A voice called from behind them. Walter stopped and turned to see William at the top of the stairs. "Ah good evening William." He greeted his older brother. Integra recognized William as the man she met upon arriving but had lost sight of on the way to her father's office. "I see you've met miss Integra." He stated.
Walter laughed, "Yep found her sneaking into my room." He teased as he looked down at Integra. Integra blushed and slightly glared up at him. William smiled slightly. "I told you I got lost!" She huffed and looked away. Walter laughed more. 'Hm Walter seems to be feeling better. The last three months he has been acting rather strange. Although I wouldn't exactly call his current behavior normal.' William thought as he watched his little brother tease Integra. 'He is normally serious as the plague… Although when around Alucard, the two throw half-hearted insults at each other and just act like total fools.' William thought. Integra stuck her tongue out at Walter. Walter held his hand on his chest in mock hurt.
William laughed at the two and shook his head. "Walter don't you have somewhere to be?" He asked. Walter looked away from Integra and towards his brother. "Oh yes that's right I was just on my way to the kitchen." He remembered. William nodded and looked down at Integra. "Well then Miss Integra what are you going to do?" He questioned. Integra was thrown off guard by the question, seemingly unsure of what he meant. Noticing her confusion Walter decided to translate for his brother.
"He means are you going to come with me or go with him." Walter explained to the young child. She looked from one to the other before walking over to Walter. She then took Walter's hand as she looked up at him with innocent eyes. Walter smiled at her before looking at his brother. "We'll talk to you later William." He said before they walked away. William watched them go unsure how to explain the pleasant change in his little brother. 'He will serve her just as well as he serves Arthur.' He thought with a smile.
The two then entered and Walter let go of Integra's hand. Integra stood there by the door way and watched as Walter grabbed a cart, a large tray, and several glasses. She then watched as he spaced the glasses out on the tray. "Walter…" Integra called out a little uncertain. "Hmm." He acknowledged as he unlocked a storage container and pulled out a wine bottle. He then put the bottle of wine down on the counter next to him and locked the storage container back. "What kind of person is my father?" Integra asked quietly. Walter quickly glanced at Integra as he once again grabbed the wine bottle and headed over to the glasses.
"Your father is a smart man who cares deeply for his country. He also takes good care of his people." Walter answered as he popped of the top and poured an equal amount of wine into each glass. He then tossed the now empty bottle and moved the tray onto the cart. Integra nodded and looked around the kitchen. Once done Walter opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water. He placed it on the cart as well and started to move back towards Integra with the cart. Upon reaching Integra, Walter opened the bottled water and handed it to her.
"Thank you." Integra said as she reached out to take the bottle from him. "You're quite welcome Miss Integra." Walter responded with a smile. Walter then started walking with the cart towards an elevator. Integra followed close behind, sipping her bottle of water. "How long have you known my father Walter?" Integra asked. They then headed up to the third floor and got off the elevator. "I've known your father for about my whole life." He answered. Integra watched Walter closely as they walked.
Walter then pushed the cart down the hall on the third floor to the meeting room. Integra glanced at Walter's broken arm then looked back at his face. "How did you get hurt?" she asked. Walter stopped suddenly and stared at her. 'She asks a lot of questions. I mean I don't mind though. It's nice to know she cares and wants to know as much as possible. She'll be a great Hellsing.' He thought with a slight smile. Integra looked at him confused. "I got hurt doing something for your Father three months ago." He answered vaguely. "but that's a story for another time." He said as he placed his hand on Integra's head. Integra smiled up at him. Walter gave another quick, gentle pat to her head before turning his attention back to his work.
Upon reaching the door to the room Walter stopped the cart and knocked on the door. He then stepped back and waited for a reply. "You wait here until I call for you." Walter ordered to Integra who nodded in understanding. "Enter." He finally heard Arthur call from inside.
With that Walter opened the door slightly and pushed the cart inside the room. As he entered the entire room looked at him. He, however, ignored the stares, pushed the cart by each person, and stopped to set their wine down in front of them. Arthur was the last Walter stopped at. Walter stood beside Arthur and placed the glass of wine down in front of him. He then leaned over towards Arthur's ear. "Your daughter has arrived. She is right outside the room." Walter informed in a whisper.
"Would you like me to bring her in to see you real quick or have her wait?" Walter asked. "Go ahead and let her in." Arthur responded. "As you wish." Walter said before standing back up straight and walking towards the door a bit. Arthur turned his chair around to face the door and watched Walter. "Miss Integra you may enter now." Walter called as he stood by the door looking at her.
Integra looked up at Walter and slowly made her way over to the door. Before reaching the door though she stopped and looked down at her feet. "What is it?" Walter questioned as he noticed her hesitation. Integra glanced up at Walter and nervously shifted from one foot to the other. 'Ah I see. This will be her first time meeting her father so it's only natural for her to be nervous.' Walter thought.
Walter smiled kindly at her. "Come on it's alright. I understand that you're nervous but there's no need to be." Walter encouraged. Arthur looked at Walter with surprise, 'well this is certainly a new sight. Walter isn't normally so gentle and patient.' He thought. Integra took a few steps forward before suddenly shying back. Walter's smile faded for a second before coming back full force. "Oh come now it's alright. I'll be right here with you." Walter tried once more holding his hand out to her.
Integra looked at his hand for a second before grabbing it. Walter then clasped her hand in his and gently pulled her into the room. 'It seems she already trusts Walter quite a bit.' Arthur thought as he watched. As Integra entered she noticed all eyes were on her and was about to pull back when Walter leaned in towards her ear. "Don't let them intimidate you; you are a Hellsing after all, show them you have what it takes to be one." Walter whispered to her. Upon hearing this Integra closed her eyes and took a deep breathed in order to calm herself down.
When she opened them again her eyes held a calm determination. "That's it, perfect." Walter praised with a smirk before leading her over to Arthur. Arthur watched the display with slight interest yet wiriness. 'I don't know what Walter said to her but she looks like a true Hellsing, so calm and collected. It doesn't seem like I'll have to worry about him being a bad influence but I can't be sure.' He thought. Arthur watched as Walter led Integra right up to him and stopped.
"Sir Hellsing, your daughter Miss Integra. Miss Integra, your father sir Arthur Hellsing." Walter introduced. "So, I finally get to see you after four years." Arthur said as he looked down at Integra with a loving smile. Integra smiled back, "and I finally get to meet you, father." She said trying not to let her eyes tear up. Walter watched the exchange happily. 'This is an adorable moment.' Walter thought. 'Geeze, I need to kill something. I'm getting soft. If Alucard notices he'll never let me live it down. The last thing I need is that damn vampire holding something else over my head.' Walter mentally chastised. The rest of the room looked at them with confusion before deciding to interrupt. "Um sir Hellsing we hate to interrupt but we really must get back to the meeting." A man spoke suddenly, gaining Arthur's attention.
"Hmm oh right the meeting." Arthur said in realization as he looked at the man. He then looked back at Integra with an apologetic look. "Maybe we can continue this later." Arthur suggested with a slight smile. Integra nodded, "OK, I understand." She responded. Arthur smiled brightly before looking at Walter. "Find her something to do." Arthur told him. "As you wish sir." Walter said with a slight bow before leaving the room with Integra.
As they walked out of the room and shut the door Integra let her calm demeanor fall. She leaned against Walter's side and tightly clinched his arm. Walter looked down at her and smiled slightly. "You did very well Miss Integra." He praised. Integra looked up at him, "Walter…". "Yes, Miss Integra?" He asked. "Does that ever get easier?" She asked as she looked down at her feet. Walter chuckled, "Yes Miss Integra I assure you that it will get easier." He replied. At this Integra loosened her hold on his arm. "Do you think I'll make a good Hellsing like my father?" she asked as she looked back up at him.
Walter glanced down at her. He then turned towards her and kneeled down in front of her. He pulled his arm from her grasp and placed his hand on her shoulder. "You are going to be a great Hellsing, Miss Integra." He told her. "Will you be by my side to guide me until then?" She asked as a strand of hair fell into her eyes. Walter smiled, "Of course I will Miss Integra." He said as he lifted his hand and moved the stray strand behind her ear. "I promise."
"Walter, Miss Integra." They heard William call from down the hall. Walter stood up and turned towards his brother. "Come to take Miss Integra, William?" He asked. William nodded in response. "Yes. I'm here to take Miss Integra to her room."
Integra glanced up at Walter. "You and Sir Arthur worry too much." Walter said with a sigh. Integra gave him a confused look and William's eyes narrowed. "You need to rest little brother. We have been lenient up until now." He warned. Walter's face became blank. "I assure you I'm perfectly fine." He said his voice void of emotion. Integra was shocked at the sudden change of the young butler. William sighed, 'Same old Walter… He would never directly argue with Sir Hellsing but he will argue with me.' He thought.
"Please Walter I know you hate sitting around doing nothing but there is only so much you can do with only one arm." William tried to reason with his younger brother. When Walter said nothing, he glanced down at Integra who seemed a little worried. Walter noticed the change in his brother's gaze and glanced down at Integra. His eyes softened and he sighed in defeat. "Very well William I'll go get some rest…" He said finally relenting. "Walter…" Integra called. Walter looked at her and smiled. "I'll see you at dinner Miss Integra." He told her as he placed his hand on her head. Integra smiled and nodded in understanding. Walter then took his leave and headed towards his room.
William watched his brother leave before turning back to Integra. "Shall we Miss Integra?" he asked his young mistress. "Yes." She responded with a smile before starting towards him. William waited for her to get closer before turning and walking down the hall towards the stairs. Integra studied William as she followed him. 'How strange… I didn't realize siblings could be so different from one another.' She thought, 'then again I just met them so maybe they are more similar then I realize.'
William felt Integra's calculating gaze and smiled slightly, 'she is already showing signs of a true Hellsing heir. Walter is going to have his hands full with her.' He thought. His slight smile disappeared and decided to ask her whatever she was trying to understand. "Is there something you would like to ask me Miss Integra?" He asked. Integra jumped in surprise. "Uhm yes… I couldn't help but notice how different you and your brother seem…" She said slowly. He glanced back at her before returning his attention to where he was going. "It's probably the age difference and the fact that I was raised by our parents while Walter was raised by Sir Arthur." William deduced. "How old are you William?" Integra asked.
"I'm 24 Miss Integra and my brother is 14. Our parent's died when Walter was two. Since then we have lived here. Sir Hellsing took care of us and raised us and now we gratefully serve him." He told her. Integra took in this new information but for some reason things didn't add up. However, she decided to leave it at that and followed William silently the rest of the way to her room.
(later that evening after dinner)
Walter laid in his bed staring at the ceiling with his good arm draped over his forehead. For some strange reason, he couldn't seem to sleep. He felt restless but couldn't understand why. Suddenly he sat up, 'Screw it I can't lay here any longer it's going to drive me insane!' he thought with a growl. He quickly turned on his bed and placed his feet on the floor. He then stood up and walked over to his door. As soon as he walked out of the room and closed his door he felt a presence hiding in the shadows.
'Fucking bastard skulking around in the dead of night. Why is he by my room?' he thought. "Come out of hiding you bloody Vampire." Walter growled out. Suddenly malicious laughter was heard before Alucard phased out into the open. "I wouldn't expect anything less of the famous Angel of Death." He (she) said. Walter glanced at Alucard. "You damn messed up blood sucking bastard why are you still in that god-awful form!"
Alucard looked down at him(her)self and shrugged. "I don't know but I think I'll stay like this a bit longer since it seems to bother you so much." He (she) said with a smirk. Walter glared at Alucard his left eye twitching. "What do you want Alucard?" Walter asked angrily. Alucard looked off to the side, his (her) face blank, and shrugged. "Don't know I guess I'm bored… Thought maybe you were up and decided to come see." He replied plainly. Walter calmed himself down and raised his hand to his face. He pinched the bridge of his nose, resisting the urge to lash out at the crazed vampire he is sometimes forced to work with.
"So…" Alucard started glancing at Walter. "What's the girl like?" he (she) asked trying not to seem interested. Walter lowered his hand and looked at Alucard. He resisted the urge to laugh at the obvious curiosity in Alucard's glowing, blood red eyes. 'I always find it funny when Alucard tries too hard to seem emotionless or uninterested.' Walter thought. Walter lowered his head hiding a malicious smirk. A second later his face was blank as he lifted his head.
"You sure you want to know Alucard? I'm not sure you can handle it." Walter said calmly not giving anything away to the Vampire. Alucard's head suddenly whipped around to look at Walter. Walter noticed Alucard's eyes widen slightly and smirked inwardly. "You care to elaborate?" He (she) asked still trying to seem emotionless and uncaring. Walter glanced around the corridor acting like he was concerned someone might be listening in on the conversation. He then motioned for Alucard to come closer. He (she) obliged and leaned forward towards Walter. "All I can tell you Alucard is that you better hope Sir Arthur lives a very long life…" He told Alucard who immediately jumped back.
"Y-You mean… S-She's not really that bad… R-right…?" Alucard stuttered as he (she) looked around frantically. Suddenly he heard Walter break out into a fit of laughter. Alucard looked at him shocked. Walter was laughing so hard he doubled over and held his stomach. Alucard blinked a few times in confusion before what was going on finally sunk in. He (she) growled at Walter in anger before lunging at him.
Walter was quickly tackled to the ground by an angry Alucard but as soon as Walter cried out in pain, He (she) paused. Alucard then slowly got up and looked away almost guilty like. Walter hissed in pain as he clutched his broken arm and slowly sitting up. Alucard calmed himself down and glanced at Walter, 'damn… I really do feel guilty for leaving him back there three months ago to fight that damn werewolf.' He (she) realized. "Geeze, you bloody git I know it's a sensitive subject but that was completely uncalled for considering all the tricks you've played on me over the years." Walter started. "Besides, I feel that I had every right to give you a scare after that fucking stunt you pulled on me back in Germany." He finished. Alucard winced slightly at what Walter said. Just then he (she) heard something from down the hall.
"What's that noise?" Alucard asked as he looked down the hall. Walter glared at him but then noticed the sound as well. Walter stared off towards the sound. "I wonder…" he muttered as he started heading down the hall. "Hey where are you going!?" Alucard called out. When he (she) didn't receive a response Alucard decided to follow him.
As Walter got closer he realized that the noise they heard was crying. 'I had a feeling it might have been Integra.' He thought. "Hey why did you stop?" Alucard asked suddenly in a quiet voice. Walter jumped slightly and quickly turned towards the vampire. "Damn it Alucard I forgot you followed me! You were so quiet I thought you got bored and wondered off!" He quietly yelled. Alucard sent him a malicious grin in response. 'one of these days Alucard I swear…' he thought as he glared at his unwanted companion. Walter turned around and was about to enter the room before he turned back towards Alucard. "Stay." He said as he pointed towards the ground. "I'm not a dog." Alucard growled as Walter turned back around. "Could have fooled me, Baskerville." Walter teased before opening Integra's door.
Walter slowly creeped into the room and saw Integra curled up in a ball on her bed. "Miss Integra." He called out just loud enough for her to hear. Integra jumped with a start and looked towards Walter. He looked at her sadly before slowly making his way towards the bed. "Dream about your mother?" Walter asked with concern. Integra nodded slightly in response as he reached the edge of her bed. Walter knelt in front of her and reached up to wipe away her tears. Just then Integra tackled him into a hug. Walter quickly caught himself before he fell over and picked her up with his good arm. "It's ok." He told her as he stood up and sat down on her bed. He sat down with one leg crossed and the other held out. He then gently lowered Integra until she was sitting in his lap.
Alucard silently peeked his head in to see what was going on. He (she) snickered quietly at the sight before him. Walter glanced towards him and sent him a glare. 'I'm so going to tease you about this later' Alucard mouthed. 'Go to hell you damn blood sucker' Walter mouthed back. Alucard smirked before leaving. After Alucard left, Walter turned his attention back to Integra. He gently rubbed her back and laid his head on top of hers. "Walter." He heard Integra call quietly. "Yes, Miss Integra?" he questioned. Integra clutched the back of Walter's shirt. "Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?" she asked. Walter closed his eyes and tightened his hold on her slightly. "Of course." He replied.
Well that's all for this chapter. What did you all think? Good? Bad? What? Let me know.
