Chapter 5: Fury
Jacob's POV
I was so furious that I didn't even realize what I had said to Nessie until it was much too late. Usually I was in much better control over my actions. 17 years of phasing had taught me a lot. But the years had not erased the animosity I felt toward them. Edward in particular. As far as I was concerned it was his fault that Bella had disappeared.
As soon as it was safe to do so I let the anger take over and the inner wolf come out. I was one of the few remaining pack members that still phased. Most of them had quit phasing not long after they left town. There was no need anymore. Even Seth quit phasing years ago. The only one who still phased was Quil and that was only because he was waiting for Claire to catch up to him in age. Now that she had it wouldn't be long until he quit either.
I would be the only wolf left. Although if my son had it his way he would've started phasing a long time ago. Two years after the Cullens had left Leah and I got married. The two of us had given up all hope of ever imprinting on anyone and we started to see each other differently. Our relationship evolved and eventually we fell in love and got married. Ben was a complete shock to us both since nobody thought Leah could get pregnant.
Oh Leah. She died a year later. She was killed by a coven of nomadic vampires that crossed through our lands one night. She was out patrolling by herself and by the time we were aware that anything was wrong it was much too late. Ever since then I devoted my life to caring for our son. He was the only thing I had left in my life that still mattered to me. Until today that is.
I had long ago given up on the idea of imprinting. I had accepted that I was destined to never meet my one true soulmate. When I locked eyes with Nessie my whole world shifted. Everything that tied me to the planet became undone in that instant. She was the center of my world. She was my gravity. I would do anything to make that girl happy. Imprinting was not something that I had expected to happen when I came here. The only thing I'd come here looking for was answers.
Twilight had left us all feeling unsettled on the reservation. All of us who knew the truth. After I read it I knew that it was my duty to come find the girl who wrote it. We needed to know just how much she knew. It was just rotten luck that the leeches were here as well. I should have been expecting that. This book would draw the attention of the vampire world.
I skidded to a halt several feet away from the house that I'd rented. I calmed myself down long enough to become human again. I was still so upset that I almost broke the door down.
"Dad what's wrong?" Ben asked with a mouthful of pizza. Nothing ever got past that boy.
"Nothing son,"
"Come on dad. I'm not two years old. I know that nothing means something,"
How exactly do I explain this to my son? That there were leeches here? Dread filled my stomach when I thought of what this new development would mean for Ben. I had hoped that my son would go on to lead a normal, human life. Much like my father had wished for me to have. Ben had dreamed of becoming a wolf since he had learned of his wolf heritage. The problem was I didn't think he fully realized everything that the shapeshifting life entailed. He would be in danger. Being the first child ever to be born to two actives shapeshifters meant that now there would be little to no chance of him escaping this life.
"Hello? Earth to dad? What's wrong? Why do you look so angry?"
"Vampires," was the only word I could say right now.
"There's vampires? Here?" he was smiling. He knew exactly what would happen now. "Finally I'll get to be a wolf like you. Maybe there will be something good about this move after all,"
"These are the very same vampires from the book,"
He looked shocked. "Dad are you sure?"
"I'm definitely sure,"
"So what are we going to then?" he asked.
"Nothing. Eventually they will find out I'm here and there's nothing we can do to avoid them,"
I hoped to put off that moment as long as possible though. The longer we avoided the leeches the more happy I would be. How would I keep Nessie away from them? Why did that girl just pop into my mind again?
She was beautiful. She was perfect. She was mine. I had her scent ingrained inside of my head permanently. I would find her again. I would track her down and then I would 'accidentally' run into her again. I wished that I was with her right now. The draw that I felt toward her was still and there and seemed to grow stronger with the physical distance.
The next day went by uneventfully. We finished unpacking and got things ready for school this morning. I had decided to enroll in high school for the duration of our time here in order to blend in better. Ben wasn't to thrilled with the idea of us attending the same high school but he'd have to get used to the idea.
Ben was not happy when I woke him up early Monday morning. "Come on dad. Really?"
"Yes we have to get their early to pick up our schedules. Please remember that to the good people of San Diego we are brothers. So don't slip up and call me dad,"
"Yes d-I mean Jacob," he smiled at me in a mocking sort of way. I whacked him playfully in the back of his head. He could be a pain in the ass but he was my pain in the ass and I wouldn't have it any other way.
The scent hit me once again when were in the parking lot. The smell was strong here. Way stronger then it was before. The leeches were here. Anger filled me again from head to toe but I fought it off. The smell got stronger and stronger the closer we got to the office. Ben was completely oblivious.
All five of them were there in the office. There was no office person upfront yet. Meaning I had no choice but to stay with them. They hadn't changed a bit. Of course they hadn't. What else had I been expecting? At first they looked surprised and then that surprise changed to disgust. 17 years was far from being long enough to erase the animosity we all felt towards each other.
"What are you doing here mutt?" Edward seethed.
"Same as you I suppose. Trying to find whoever wrote that book. I should've known it would attract the attention of you leeches as well,"
"Maybe we should change schools," blondie spoke. "I don't want to attend a school that trains mutts,"
"Maybe we don't want to attend a school whose standards are so low they'd allow someone with your IQ level to attend," I sneered. Out of all the high schools in San Diego we just all had to end up at the same one. Of course fate would be that cruel to me.
Blondie was about to say something when the door opened and to my shock it was Nessie that entered. My anger was instantly replaced by happiness.
Nessie looked very uneasy and it didn't take long to understand what the source of her discomfort was. It was those leeches. Edward watched her intensely and I watched his expression change.
"It's her. She's the girl who wrote the book," he whispered so low that a normal human wouldn't hear him.
"Are you sure?" someone asked but I wasn't sure who.
"Yes she was just thinking about it right now. This is her. She's Bella's daughter,"
