It was the second week of October. Two weekends ago John had came to see Lexie. Lexie and Kim were going to the spa tomorrow. Randy was paying Kim's way. She was flying in tomorrow morning. It was night time. Lexie and John were talking on the phone.
"I'm glad Kim's going with you." John said.
"Me to." Lexie said. "It'll be fun."
"What are you gonna tell her?"
"About what?"
"Well she's probably going to question where you got the gift certificate."
"I'm gonna tell her I won a mailing contest." "You know I won't be able to talk to you all weekend."
"I know."
"We'll both just have to think about two weeks ago to get us through."
"That was fun."
"Yeah."
"I'll still miss you though."
"I'll miss you to."
The next day after dropping the kids off at the sitters Lexie and Kim met at the spa. After getting checked into their shared room they were getting massages.
"This feels so great." Kim said.
"Yeah."
"You're coming over for Thanksgiving right?"
"Don't we always?"
"Yeah."
"Then we'll be there."
"Bring your boyfriend." "I wanna meet him."
"When are you going to get off of this?"
"When you admit it." "What do the kids think of him?"
"Kim, listen to me, there is no him."
"You can't hide him forever."
John and Randy met up at a bar in Milwaukee. They were playing pool. John had just missed his third shot.
"Damn it." John said. He sighed frustrated.
"Something wrong?"
"Yeah, I'm in love."
"Isn't that a good thing?"
"Not in my case, I don't know what to do."
"Is this about the woman with the kids?"
"Yeah."
"Who is she?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"I need it to be kept a secret."
"You don't think I can keep your secret?"
"No."
"So you don't trust me is what you're saying?"
"You think you can keep my secret huh?"
"I know I can."
"Even if you had to keep it from someone you love?"
"Like who?"
"Like Kim."
"Why the hell would Kim care?" He said confused. "Unless you were dating... "Wait." He said starting to get it. "You're dating Lexie?'
"Well we're not officially dating but yeah."
"How long has it been going on?"
"Seven months."
"Seven months!"
"We ran into each other towards the end of March." "We went to lunch that day and just kept talking after that." "Just from phone conversation we got very close." "I sent Max the baseball uniform for his birthday and Marybeth the doll house and dog for hers." "Lexie and I didn't even have sex until that night at- He stopped.
"What"
"I don't know if I should tell you this part."
"Just say it."
"The night at your house."
"You had sex with Lexie in my house?"
"Yeah."
"Where?"
"The basement."
"Wait." "When you guys saw each other that day you acted like you hadn't seen each other."
"It was all part of our charade."
"Did you know she would be there that day?"
"No." "It was purely coincidental." "I never expected this but Randy, I love Lexie so much."
"Does she know?"
"No."
"So, what's the problem?"
"There's one big thing I haven't done yet." "I think mainly because she and I both thought it would never get to this point." "I haven't spend any time with the kids." "They don't even know I'm the one who sent them the presents."
"That's a big issue."
"I know that." "I keep wondering if I should get to know the kids, or if I should just stop seeing her." "Just the thought of breaking it off with her is killing me."
"Has your stance on kids changed?"
"No." "Maybe it would if I spent time with the kids "
"John you know I think of you like a brother." "That being said, please don't take this the wrong way." "I think you should break things off with Lexie." "The kids we're talking about aren't just kids." "They're my niece and nephew." "They've never had a father they remember." "If they get attached to you and it doesn't work out it'll hurt them." "I'm really sorry but Lexie and you just aren't right for each other." "You need a woman with no kids."
"I know you're right." He said with a sad look on his face.
Lexie and Kim had a great first day at the spa. It was night time. Kim was asleep. Lexie should've been nice and relaxed but she wasn't. She was up thinking about something that had been on her mind a lot lately. Something she was agonizing over, something she didn't want to do at all. In her mind she knew it was the right thing to do. She knew she had to break things off with John.
