Jason's memory about how he found out how lucky he is to have Dick as a brother. Jason is twelve and Dick is sixteen. (This is what happens when we have to read really sad cases about serial killers in AP Psych.)

Chapter 39: He's coming back for me

Jason's POV

I shivered as we got out of the car. It's freaking freezing!

"Come on Jay. I'd actually like to check on the horses before the blizzard gets here." Dick said, while walking towards the stable.

I tramped through the snow after him and into the barn. I don't see why we had to check on his stupid horses. Bruce pays people to do it. The horses are boarded at the most freaking expensive stable in Gotham! You'd think they'd be fine. But, Dick always has to make sure his stupid animals are okay.

I hated this place. There were freaking chandeliers in the stalls of the horses. Chandeliers! The barn and the indoor arena were heated. The horses even had their own heated pool and treadmills for when it was too cold to go outside.

I stopped outside of the stall Dick was in. He was in with Tornado. He was Bruce's old stud horse, until he gave him to Dick. Apparently, Dick was the only one able to ride him. Tornado is huge! He's solid black and he definitely has a temper. Dick said he was a Friesian or something like that.

"Hey Jay! Let's go for a quick ride!" Dick responded enthusiastically.

"Well… I would but… it's too cold." I replied.

"Come on Jay. You're still not scared of horses are you?"

Yes. "No!" I stubbornly replied.

"Then let's go."

I hate horses. Okay, so I'm a little scared of them. But, horses are scary. They're big and they bite and they can think for themselves! Why would you want to get on something that has a mind of its own? You can't trust them.

I clung to my saddle horn as Dick rode a little ahead of me. We were on one of the trails. We were heading back towards the barn. He stopped the horse and turned to trot circles around my own horse. Bruce had gotten me the most dead broke, slowest, and easy going horse possible. She was a red roan and her name was Baby. She was nice and all, but I hate horses. If I was starving, I wouldn't hesitate to eat her.

"Jason, you're posture is incorrect. You keep leaning forward and you'll fall right off. Loosen up your reins. And stop clenching the saddle horn. Come on, the storms moving in and the last thing I want is to be buried under a thousand feet of snow. Besides, I thought you said you weren't afraid of horses anymore."

"Shut up, Dick!" I growled.

"Come on, Jay. We need to be moving a little faster. Storm's coming. Besides, Kori's party is tonight." He stated before walking ahead of me again.

"What party?" I asked catching up with him.

"Her birthday party. She'll be seventeen. I'm taking Donna."

I glared at Dick. I thought he was gonna break up with Donna for Kori! I can't believe he's still with her. Doesn't he know how I feel about her? She's gorgeous and tall and nice and… she's nice to me. "Why?" I asked coldly.

"Because we're dating."

"Yeah, well, I thought you said we'd watch a movie I picked tonight. I don't really feel like going to a party tonight."

Dick stopped and spun his horse in a showoff way to face me. "Jason, you're not going with me. You're going to stay home with Alfred tonight. This is a party for the Titans. And you're not a Titan. You don't really expect me to show up with my kid brother do you?"

"You're not that much older than me! And I'm Robin now! I could be a Titan if I wanted too! And you don't even care about Donna or anyone! The only girl you care about is the one you're freaking screwing at the time!" I yelled.

"Watch it, Jason! Or else I'll tell Alfred what you said! He'll have you sitting in the bathroom with a bar of soap on your tongue!" he threatened.

"Yeah well, I can do whatever I want! You don't even deserve her!"

His glare broke into a grin and let out a laugh. "Oh my God! You have a crush on my girlfriend! Come on, get real. You're twelve and she's sixteen. I mean you still sleep with your teddy bear."

My cheeks turned red from the embarrassment and from where the icy wind lashed at my face. "I do not!" I shouted.

Dick laughed at me. "Oh really? Is that why you came crying to me last weekend because you had a bad dream, you were begging to sleep with me through your tears. Come on, you had the bear with you."

I forced back tears. Dick was making fun of me. He doesn't want me hanging out with him anymore. "I hate you!" I yelled while kicking the horse.

"Jason stop!" he yelled while urging his horse after me.

Hanging onto the saddle horn for dear life, I urged the horse to go faster. I glanced behind me to find that Dick wasn't following me anymore. I pulled back on the reins.

"Baby! Stop!" I shouted into the wind, but she only went faster. We rounded a sharp curve. Only, she stopped and I didn't.

Dick's POV

I brushed the snow from my clothes as I stood up. Tornado was trying to gain his footing and stand up. He had tripped and fallen on a large tree root, hidden by the snow. Glancing up at the sky, I swallowed the lump in my throat as white flakes fell from the sky. Temperature was dropping. The snow storm is already starting.

"Jason! Come on, I'm sorry! We need to go!" I called out above the now howling wind.

Swinging myself into the saddle, I pushed Tornado forward. I stopped him when I saw Jason's mare walking towards us. Without a rider.

Jason's POV

I groaned in pain as I looked up at the steep incline I had fallen over. How am I still alive? Trying to stand up, I gave a cry of pain as my leg buckled. My leg! Oh crap! I broke my leg!

"You may not want to move a whole lot. You're legs broke and you hit your head really hard."

Practically leaping from my skin, I turned my head to find a blonde headed little boy around my age, smiling up at me.

"Hi, I'm Toby." He said pleasantly.

"Um, I'm Jason… What are you doing here? There's a snow storm coming in."

"I'm waiting on my brother. He's coming back for me."

I felt a twinge of similarity. I couldn't help but wonder if Dick was looking for me.

"How old are you, Jason?" he asked.

"I'm twelve."

"Me too!"

I gulped as snow started to fall from the sky. I whimpered as I felt a sudden throbbing in my leg.

"That must have hurt. I broke my leg too when I fell. The first night is always the hardest." He replied sympathetically.

"The first night? How long have you been here?" I asked, eyeing him skeptically.

"Three days. Since February, 23 1993." He replied.

"Oh, that sucks… wait. Toby, today is January 18, 2006."

He shook his head. "That can't be right. I remember the day perfectly. I'm waiting on Parker to come back and get me, just like he promised he would. He's the best big brother ever… well, unless he gets mad at me."

"What happens if he gets mad at you?" I asked nervously, not really sure what was happening. Am I talking to a ghost?

"He hits me. Or he'll call me bad names. But, he doesn't mean it. He loves me." he replied.

I stared at him in shock. "You… he… he hits you?" I whispered, trying to picture Dick doing anything worse than grabbing me around the waist and hugging me tightly.

He dropped his eyes to the ground. "Yeah. Sometimes it really hurts and the bruises last for a long time. Our parents died not too long ago and he blames me for it. Sometimes he says I'm the reason he lost everything and I'm why he has to work at a stable. And it makes me feel really bad."

I thought about Dick. He'd never actually hit me or yelled at me. Well, he does yell at me if I did something stupid or if we fight or if I scared him and he was afraid I was dying or something. But, normally he feels really bad about it and hugs me and stuff afterwards. And he's never blamed me for anything. He wouldn't ever hurt me.

"How did you get here?" I asked.

"The same way you did. I fell… well, Parker accidently pushed me."

"He... accidently pushed you?" I asked confused.

"Yeah, we went for a walk and he said he accidentally tripped and he knocked into me, while we were walking by and I accidently fell down here. I broke my leg. He said he was going to get help and that he would be right back."

I opened my eyes in shock. What? "Um, Toby… how long did you say you've been here?"

"Since February, 23 1993. I can't really remember what happened after the 25th."

Oh my God. He didn't fall. His brother pushed him and left him for dead. His brother left him to die alone and believing he was going to come back. His brother murdered him. His own blood brother. Dick wasn't even related to me and had never hurt me. He loves me.

"Do you have a brother?" he piped up.

"Yeah. Dick's my brother. My older brother."

"What's he like?"

"Well, he finally hit a growth spurt last year. He's sixteen. He's got black hair and light blue eyes. He's good with people, especially older women-"

"Has he ever hit you?" Toby asked quietly.

"No! He wouldn't ever do anything like that! Ever! He… he loves me. He's my best friend. He'd do anything for me. He always does things with me and he helps check over my homework… and he holds me... He's the best brother. He's looking for me now." I replied confidently.

"Well, I hope he hurries. You don't look so good, Jason… maybe our brothers will find us together."

I looked down as the snow started falling faster. My legs were already covered. I couldn't feel my body. Cold. Why is it so hard to breathe? Burning. My skin feels like it's on fire. My breathing started to slow. I blinked, trying to force my eyes to stay open. Rapidly, I started sinking into the darkness. Dickie, help me.

"It's okay, Little Wing. I'm here. You're going to be okay… Come on Jason, you have to wake up… Please, little brother, I love you, I need you. I… can't lose you." was the last thing I heard before slipping into darkness.

Dick's POV

"Jason!" I screamed as my eyes landed on his crumpled form lying unmoving in the snow. Practically, jumping off of the horse I moved over to the side of the cliff about to climb down.

"Mr. Wayne! Wait, it's too dangerous! Please let one of us go down there. We'll get his body." the stable manager stressed, obviously not wanting to lose his biggest patron.

"He. Is. Not. Dead." I growled before sliding down the bluff.

Wrapping my coat around him, while ignoring the stinging wind cutting into my sweater, I cradled him into my chest. Oh God! He was so cold and his skin held a blue tint. "It's okay, Little Wing. I'm here. You're going to be okay… Come on Jason, you have to wake up… Please, little brother, I love you, I need you. I… can't lose you." I whispered.

Jason's POV

"Jason, you should wake up now."

I opened my eyes to find Toby and I still sitting in the snow, looking up at the cliff.

"You should wake up. Your brother is waiting on you. He needs you… mine's not coming for me is he?" he asked sadly, tears dripping from his eyes.

"No. I'm sorry... I wish I could do something for you… You deserved better. I-"

"It's okay, Jason. I know." He replied while giving me a soft smile. "You should be thankful that he loves you so much. Your brother is waiting on you. You should go." he replied, while waving to me as the darkness claimed me again.

Dick's POV

"Has he woken up yet?" Bruce's voice stressed coming over the phone.

"No." I replied staring at the boy on the hospital bed in front of me. "Dad, when are you coming back?" I asked, dropping my head into my hands.

"Dickie, I'd be there if I could. The damn roads closed and I'm still at the damn airport. I picked the worst time to go on a business trip, didn't I?" he asked quietly.

"It's not your fault… it's my fault." I stated, ready to kill myself if Jay didn't make it.

"Listen to me, Richard! This is not your fault! I'll be there as soon as I can."

"I'll let you know if anything changes… I love you, Dad." I said while hanging the phone up, not even bothering to hear his response. He'd call me back in another half hour. He'd been doing that for the past two days.

Scooting closer to the bed, I took Jason's limp hand into mine. "God, please don't take him from me. Please just let him wake up." I prayed.

Jason's POV

I cracked the corner of my open as I felt pressure on my hand. Dick.

"God, please don't take him from me. Please just let him wake up… I need him. I don't know what I'd do if I lost him. I love him so much. I never even told him how much he means to me or…" Dick stopped as he lowered his head onto the side of my bed, never letting go of my hand.

"You have my permission to continue."

His head shot up and he smiled at me. "Jason."

"Dick." I replied opening my eyes only to have them widen in horror as I saw a needle and a tube in my arm.

Both of my wrists were encased in his hands. "Leave the needle alone." He ordered.

"Get it out... I wanna go home." I whimpered. The last thing I wanted to think about was my mom and the way she…

"Shh. Don't cry. It's okay. I'm here, Little Wing. Just look at me."

My eyes left the needle sticking out of my arm and traveled up to his face. "Where's Toby? Did you save him too?" I asked.

"Jason what are you talking about?"

"He was there with me. He… he was beside me. His brother left him there to die… Bbut, you you didn't llleave mme. Yyou came bback." I choked out as tears fled from my eyes.

"Shhh, Jay. Don't cry. It's okay." he cooed, while letting go of one of my wrists and combing my hair back.

"I don't understand." I whimpered.

"Jason, you fell. You broke your leg. You were blue when I found you. You had hypothermia. I… I thought I lost you. You were lying in the snow alone and unconscious. You weren't breathing."

"But… I saw him. I talked to him. He said… his bbrother was coming bback. Hhe said you… you wwere waiting on mme."

"You probably hallucinated everything." He gently replied, while standing up.

"Wwhere are you ggoing?" I fearfully asked.

"I'm not going anywhere... Alfred's here. He went to get a cup of tea. But, he brought something for you." He replied, while reaching into a bag and pulling out my teddy bear and handing me a tissue before wiping the tears from my face.

I was about to make some snarky comment, but I graciously accepted the bear. "Dick… I love you. I could have had any brother." I thought about how Toby's brother had been willing to murder him. "And I got stuck with you. And I'm glad I did. You're the best brother ever. You've always been there for me."

"You hit your head harder than I thought." He teased. "I love you too Jay. And I'm sorry about what I said about you and the party and sleeping with me and the bear. I didn't mean it, Jay. You can always come to me with anything."

I glanced up as the door was opened. Donna? She walked into the room and handed Dick a cup of coffee. Her skin tight jeans, boots, and crimson top revealing cleavage came to stand beside Dick.

"Oh thank the gods, he's awake." She said. "Dick, have you had any sleep in the past two days?" she asked while bending over to ruffle my hair as I blushed.

"No." he replied.

"I bet you haven't even left this room. Why don't you get something to eat, I'll stay with Jason until you get back."

"She's right, Dick. It will be good for you. I'll be okay with Donna for a little while." I weakly replied.

Donna then pushed Dick out of the room and closed the door. "Will… will you sit with me. I don't want to be alone." I called over to her.

"Of course, how about I read to you for a little while?" she asked, while sitting beside me on the bed.

"Um, could I have some water first?" I meekly asked.

She reached across me and pulled the glass of water from the table, giving me the perfect shot of her boobs.

"Better?" she asked after I had taken a sip.

"Much better." I replied. Oh yeah. I have the best brother who has the best girlfriends.

"Jason."

I looked up to see Bruce standing in the doorway. Donna quickly stood up.

"Donna, Dick is with Alfred in the cafeteria if you want to join them."

"Thank you, Mr. Wayne. I think I will. Bye Jason, feel better." She said before leaving.

No Donna! Come back!

"Hey Bluejay. How are you feeling?" Bruce asked, taking a seat beside me.

"Fine… Dad, I love you, but you're killing me here."

"Jason, it might be time we had the talk."

"Dick! Dick! Help me!" I screamed.
