Christmas Eve miracle.

After his colleagues leave for the holidays, Oliver O'Toole returns by taxi to the DLO. This short fanfiction is based on the end of the film "For Christmas". The characters belong to the talented Martha Williamson.

Shane, Rita and Norman greeted Oliver one last time with their hands before getting in the car. After they left, Oliver walked the streets for a long time looking for a taxi. It was dark and thin snowflakes were starting to fall. Two cars had driven past him without stopping.

Oliver stopped then, in front of a house, and he heard a family singing Silent Night.

Memories came to his mind. Every December, he was waiting for the arrival of the tree, and over all, to decorate the Christmas tree .

His eyes fogged up and he thought of all those warm Christmases he missed so much, and now he was still spending Christmas alone again. Oliver went on his way throught the silent night.

He continued walking a little longer, but he stopped when he saw two headlights coming towards him in the distance. The taxi stopped and Oliver got in.

"Good evening, sir. You're very lucky, I found you in this freezing cold. Where shall I drop you?" The taxi driver, asked, as he started the car.

"Good evening, thank you. I'd like to go to the Denver post office," Oliver answered

"What?! The post office?! Funny place to spend Christmas Eve." The cab driver, exclaimed, almost choking a laugh.

"Yes, it's right... I'm employed at the post office and I wanted to make sure there were no letters or parcels left to delivery before tomorrow," Oliver said

"I see. I'm Chad. So Santa has assistants who work at the post office," The driver declared, smiling through his rearview mirror.

They had left the small suburban areas and arrived downtown. Then, a street lamp was shining the pearl of something, who was hanging on the rear-view mirror and the postal detective noticed it.

"Wait a moment... Excuse me ...that necklace hanging on your rear-view mirror, where did you find it?" Oliver asked.

"That was sold to me in exchange for a piece of sheepskin I had in my car. It was a blonde woman dressed as an angel. She wanted to buy it from me and since she had no money, she gave me this necklace. I was thinking of selling it to a jeweler afterwards," The driver told.

"Let me buy it from you, no matter what your price is, please," Oliver asked.

"It sounds like it's very important to you," Chad, said surprised.

"Indeed, much more than you think. It's a priceless present" Oliver added

Arriving at the post office, Oliver paid and got out of the cab.

"Wait a moment, Mr. Postman. What you just did is a Christmas miracle," Chad said before he left.

Oliver O'Toole smiled and walked into the post office. Arriving at the DLO, he found a tree decorated with a starfish and shells and decorations like he was child. The postal detective started decorating the tree. He was convinced that this Christmas would no longer be like the others he had spent alone. When Oliver was finished, he turned around and found Shane, Rita and Norman.

"So, did you miss your plane?" Oliver asked.

"No, we missed you... Where did all this come from?" Shane asked.

Oliver O'Toole turned on the record player.

"One thing at a time, Miss McInerney...Rita, would please, dance with me."

"Uh... all right," said Rita.

" Norman, you don't have a choice, either. I'll teach you," Shane ordered.

"I don't know how to dance," Norman replied

"Just give me your hand and everything will be okay. All right, well... 1...2...3, that's good. Don't look down and just listen to the music," Shane to encourage him.

"Okay." said Norman.

"All right, Rita, great posture. And 1...2...3," Oliver declared.

He spun Rita around to throw her into Norman's arms and picked up Shane on the way.

"Hi, I think I understand the dance steps," Norman exclaimed

"I, too, never thought we'd learn to dance this fast. It's a miracle," Rita exclaims with a smile.

"I have to say I'm very surprised. I never expected Christmas Eve like this," Oliver said

"It's the Christmas miracle you talk so much about, Oliver," Shane declared.

"Really? You still don't believe it, though, Miss McInerney," Oliver said with a laugh.

"Yes, I don't believe. Maybe someday I'll"... Shane said, stopping.

She approached the tree and found her necklace hanging.

"But... How did you?" Shane asked, moved.

"I came home in a taxi," replied Oliver, who reached out his hand again to ask her to dance.

They kept dancing until the music stopped.

"Well, I never dance so long. It's refreshing to have a drink," Rita said after dance.

"Yes, it's original to drink Yoo-hoo on Christmas Eve!" Shane exclaimed.

"To our lovely family of POstables," Oliver, said, raising his glass.

"To the POstables," Rita, Norman and Shane said in the same time.

After drinking.

"Thank you very much, Oliver, we had a wonderful time tonight. See you next week," Rita said before she left.

"Good evening, Oliver. Well, I'll have a lot to tell my cousins tomorrow. See you next week," Norman added as he left.

"Well, they both finally danced together. They all did very well," . Shane remarked

"I thought so, too. So, you're not going on vacation anymore. I have a question. Do you go on vacation every Christmas? " Oliver asked.

"Well, actually, I prefere avoid this period. I could go to my mother's, but it brings back such painful memories of my father's departure". "Shane replied.

"I have to admit it's not the hottest time of the year, but it's a time that warms hearts, Miss McInerney," said Oliver.

"But when you mentioned our family of POstables, it really touched me and..." Shane began.

Oliver removed the necklace from the tree for hung it around Shane's neck.

"And you noticed it was a Christmas Eve miracle," Oliver said as he tied the necklace.

"Thank you, Oliver…If you mean, finding my necklace in a cab, you could say it was a Christmas miracle," Shane said with a smile and a laugh.

"I wasn't talking about that. I was talking about you," said Oliver whispering in her ear.

Shane turned her face toward Oliver, and her smile faded away.

"Oliver, what are you talking about? Me? What Christmas miracle?" Shane asked.

"Miss McInerney, you gave what you cared about most in the whole world, to please Hannah, to make a little girl happy. That's a miracle. I don't know if you realize how much you do good for every person you meet. And know, Miss McInerney, in your heart, there is a beautiful star that shines" Oliver says.

Shane had a tear in her eye.

"Thank you so much. I think I'll spend next Christmas Eve at home. And you, Oliver, what's your wish for next Christmas Eve?" asked Shane.

"My wish has already been fulfilled tonight, not spending Christmas Eve alone again. But if there's one thing I still believe in, it's finding someone to share a common future with." Oliver replied smiling.

The end.
