"So you were 21?" he asked as they waited at the café for their drinks

"I was doing my 3rd year at ADFA…" she smiled slightly

"I'd seen him around the first 2 years you know he wasn't hard to miss I mean he'd had brown hair back the then" she grinned

"What I don't understand is how he could not notice you I mean, you're someone that wouldn't be easily forgotten" Charge laughed

"I wasn't in any of the classes he was teaching until my 3rd year when I decided to advance my knowledge" she shrugged as the waiter placed there coffee's down on the table.

"Okay… Correct me if I'm wrong" he answered as they began putting sugar in their coffee's

"I can try" she smirked

"So the you met at ADFA, the Boss was your instructor at the time and he's 10 years older than you what was the attraction?" he said confused as Kate broke into a smile

"He was gentle, kind, compassionate, I was running late to class one morning I suppose he was too anyway I'd tripped and all my paperwork went everywhere he stopped and took the time to help me clean it up I asked if there was any way I could make it up to him for making him late he replied with asking me out for dinner, and I mean that signature Flynn smile he'd flash at me I'd go weak at the knee's not to mention the way he'd touch…"

"Okay a little too much information there Kate" Charge quickly stopped her

"You don't even know what I was going to say" she laughed

"I have a fair idea and really I don't need that imagine of my 2 superior officers" he shook his head as Kate took a mouthful out of her drink trying to hide the smile

"So what happened?" he finally asked

"Sorry?" she said placing her mug back down

"Well I mean he was at Hammersley and from the way he reacted when you first showed up…" he replied, sighing softly she knew this question was coming and part of her didn't know how to respond

"The same thing that always happens, he was posted to a boat I still had another 2 years to go at ADFA and he didn't want to do long distance"

"So that's it? You guys just broke up" he shrugged

"Pretty much…" she smiled sadly.

After 2 more hours of talking things over they were now on their third cup of coffee

"Wow… I hadn't realised you and the Boss had so much…"

"Drama filled history" Kate finished as she reached for her coffee

"Is that… I mean is that why you gave him the cold shoulder when you first came aboard?" he asked reaching for his own

"I'm telling you this in confidence Andy, I mean after the whole Samaru experience I feel we've become closer" she said taking a sip of her drink

"Of course Kate, anything you tell me it's not going to get repeated" he assured her as he placed his mug back down

"I haven't exactly been entirely honest with you the first time Mike and I were involved…" she swallowed nervously

"He didn't exactly end things in the normal way people would"

"Okay…" he said confused

"He just left" she shrugged placing her coffee back down

"What do you mean he just left?"

"I mean I woke up to an empty bed, an empty wardrobe and a note in his place with the only word being 'Sorry'"

"That doesn't sound like Mike" he answered shocked

"He's not the same man I remember Charge, the only thing that hasn't changed is his love for his bloody boat" she rolled her eyes

"And what about his signature Flynn smile?" he smirked

"It still makes me go weak at the knee's" she laughed.

Making their way back to the car Charge and Kate were in a deep conversation laughing and nudging each other Charge had an arm wrapped over Kate's shoulder when a voice in front stopped them

"Charge, Kate…" Mike said surprised as he stopped in front of them with Maxine

"Sir, Ma'am…" Charge said awkwardly as he moved his arm off Kates shoulder

"Ah we were just heading off to get some lunch, would you like to join us?" Maxine asked sensing the awkwardness between Mike and Kate

"I've actually got plans" Charge replied clearing his throat as he noticed Kate avoiding Mike's sad looking gaze

"McGregor?" Maxine answered looking at Kate

"Hmm?"

"Lunch, with Commander Flynn and I?"

"I can't sorry, I have some things I need to do" she said softly

"Sure another time maybe" Mike finally spoke

"Do you still need that lift?" Charge asked softly

"Yeah thanks" she nodded

"I guess we'll see each other soon then" Maxine smiled

"Sure" Kate cleared her throat as she moved aside with Charge

"Have fun at lunch" Charge answered as they began walking off he noticed the looks that Kate and Mike shared as they went their separate ways.

4 Weeks later:

"Charge have you got a minute?" Kate asked softly as she stood on the top step of the bridge

"Everything alright?" he replied moving from the electronics

"I got those results for those test" she nodded as Mike listened on from his place in the Captain's chair

"Right, um wardroom?" he said stopping in front of her as she passed him an envelope

"Yep" she replied before exiting the bridge with him following behind.

They'd been out of a routine patrol now for 3 days, Mike wasn't talking to Kate unless it was to do with the boat and she wasn't talking to him so she really spent most of her time at home with a good book and a bottle of raspberry cordial for some reason her new favourite thing;

her test results had come back clear however they needed further blood taken with some abnormalities showing up being out at sea she had to rush and get the bloods taken before they sailed now 3 days later she nervously went to collect Charge to look over the results.

"Have you looked at it?" he asked as they entered the wardroom

"No… I couldn't get up the courage to" she sighed closing the door behind them

"It can't be too bad right"

"All the tests came back clear except one and that was the bloods"

"Well…"

"So what is it blood cancer, leukaemia some weird blood disease?"

"Okay calm down!" he said assuring her

"I can't!" she yelled back as she paced back and forth

"Alright I'm opening it" he nodded pulling at the envelope

"Oh god…" she sighed running her hands through her hair as he looked over the paperwork

"Oh… Oh my god…" he answered surprised

"What? What is it, is it blood cancer?" she asked nervously

"No it's…"

"What?"

"I… So when was the last…" he cleared his throat

"Charge you're scaring me!"

"Take a look for yourself" he smirked holding out the paper as she moved towards him

"Is that?" she answered placing a hand across her mouth

"Yep" he nodded with a smile

"That can't be right!" she said staring at the bold writing that read '6 weeks Pregnant'

"Blood tests don't lie Kate" he grinned moving towards her

"But I… I mean how?"

"Well when a man and a woman…" he laughed as she hit his chest

"I know how; I just mean I don't have any symptoms…"

"Little Kate McGregor is going to be a Mother" he nudged her arm

"I'm going to be a Mum?" she said softly as a hand instinctively moved to rest on her abdomen

"Congratulations Kate!" Charge laughed as he pulled her into a hug and spun her around the wardroom door swung open

"Sorry…" Swain said awkwardly as Charge put her down she straightened up her uniform

"It's fine we were just…" Charge began to say as Kate nudged his side to stop him

"What?" Swain asked confused

"Nothing" Kate nodded as she made a quick exit not realising she'd dropped her test results that lodged itself under the table

"I should…" Charge answered pointing to the exit as Swain stood there confused.
