Chapter 93: Chance

Damian's POV

I pulled my hood closer to my face. I then felt Grayson draw me closer to his side. I sighed contently at the warmth, before returning my attention back to my mare, Nightmare.

Nightmare was going to have her first foal. I couldn't believe it. My own foal. We watched as she lay on her side breathing heavily. We watched as she let out a scream and started moving her legs slightly. Oh my God! Its time!

A few minutes later I threw up and turned away from the stall. That is disgusting. I refuse to allow my future wife to have children. Mia and I shall adopt.

"Dami, come here. Look at the baby. Isn't he cute?" Grayson said while gesturing for me to look at the foal.

I peered through the window in the stall. I could see my solid black mare standing up and slowly approaching the foal lying on the ground. I watched as she sniffed her baby. Suddenly, her ears were pinned against her head as she reared and brought her hooves down against the foal.

"No! Stop!" I screamed, throwing the stall door open.

Dick's POV

"Damian!" I yelled running after him into the stall.

I grabbed Nightmare's halter and pushed her away from the foal and Damian. Soon, the vet, Dr. Cyphers, came rushing in along with a stable hand. Handing the mare over to the stable hand, I turned to see Damian on his knees crying into the foal's neck.

"What happened?" Dr. Cyphers asked.

"The mare rejected the foal. She attacked him." I replied, looking down at the foal struggling for breath.

"Son, I think it'd be better to put it down." My vet replied sadly.

"No! You can't! I won't allow it!" Damian screamed, still attached to the dying baby.

"Dami, let go." I whispered coming over to him.

"No, I won't leave him! I can't!"

"Dami-"

"No! We're the same! My mother didn't want me either!" he yelled at me through watery eyes.

"Do what you can, but make sure he lives." I ordered to the vet before dragging Damian away from the stall.

"Damian, shhh. Calm down. It's okay. It's okay." I whispered, rubbing his back as he cried into my chest.

"Hhhoww ccouulld she do it?" he sniffled.

"I don't know Dami. Sometimes mothers reject their-"

"Why! Don't they know how much it hurts us! Why don't they care!" he screamed, allowing his feelings about his mother to come out.

"Oh Damian, I don't know. I'm so sorry... Sometimes, something goes wrong with the baby and the mother simply tries to put it out of its misery. I know it sounds harsh, but-"

"Then what's wrong with me?" he whispered as he looked up at me with watery eyes.

"Nothing. There is nothing wrong with you." I firmly stated, wiping away tears from his eyes.

"Mr. Wayne." The vet called as Damian and I looked up at the same time. "The foal is blind in one eye and it was born premature. He's alive, but barely. I don't know if he'll make it through the night." Dr. Cyphers stated gravely.

I watched as Damian entered the stall and lay down beside the animal.

"I'm not leaving Chance." He firmly stated as I sat down beside him.

This is going to be a long night.

Damian's POV

Grayson and I were sleeping in shifts. It was currently my turn. I reached out and stroked the foal's silky muzzle. He looks just like Nightmare.

"Do not worry, Chance. I shall protect you. I won't abandon you." I whispered into the animal's ear. "I promise… We're the same."

Dick's POV

"You need to get better, Chance. Please. I've dealt with animals dying before and it kills me. But, Damian hasn't dealt with that yet… I hate seeing any of my little brothers hurting. He's only nine. Just keep trying, Chance. Please." I whispered before the vet returned to do more tests.

"Mr. Wayne, I think the foal's chances have slightly increased."

"Thank God." I breathed.

Miraculously, the foal lived through the night. Actually, Chance is now two months old and Damian is the baby's "mother."

"Grayson! Hurry up!" Damian screamed, running towards the barn.

"Slow down, Damian!" I ordered as I ran after him.

He slid open Chance's stall door and disappeared inside. Smiling, I watched as the two month old foal limped over to Damian as Damian held out a bottle to the foal. Damian smiled as the foal began drinking from the baby bottle.

"Slower, Damian. Don't let him drink so fast. Remember, he is still a baby." I added as Damian rolled his eyes at me.

"I know what I'm doing, Grayson!" he hissed.

I laughed as the foal sneezed milk formula all over Damian.

"Not one word, Grayson. Not one word."

Damian's POV

"Aww! He's so cute!" Mia squealed as she, Colin, Freddy, and AJ petted Chance.

"Yeah, but Swimmy's cuter." AJ grumbled as we stared at him.

"Um… I'm pretty sure a baby horse is cuter than your shark." Freddy stated as AJ rolled his eyes.

"Nah uh!" he yelled.

I froze as I entered Chance's stall. Empty. My eyes grew wide as I frantically called his name. I panicked as tears fell from my eyes.

"Damian, what's wrong?" Grayson asked.

"I… he… gone." I whispered.

"Damian, he's in the pasture." He softly replied as I released a sigh of relief.

"Oh."

He held out his hand and said, "Come on."

I took his hand as he led me over to the pasture. I nearly had a heart attack as I saw my horse neighing at Grayson's horse.

The much larger and older horse eyed Chance carefully before sniffing him and neighing back. Chance took off running as Tornado chased after him. What?

"Dami, look. Tornado and Chance are playing together." Grayson whispered as we watched the two chase each other across the large pasture.

They ran past Todd's horse, which looked up at them briefly before returning its attention to the grass. That's when Nightmare charged Chance.

I nearly cried out, when Father's horse blocked her path. Where did he come from? He's supposed to be in the stall. Knight barred his teeth and reared at my mare as Chance trembled behind Tornado. Jason's horse quickly trotted over and neighed angrily as my mare quickly retreated.

Slowly, the foal approached Father's enormous horse. The younger neighed happily at the elder as Knight extended his muzzle until it touched Chance's muzzle. They rubbed against each other for a moment then, Chance trotted over to Tornado and Baby as they played with him. Knight quickly retreated to the shadows as he kept watch over the three of them.

"Dami, are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

"My mare's a bitch?"

He rolled his eyes before replying, "No. I think Tim and Alfred need to get horses of their own."

"Why?"

"Because their family is missing two very important family members."

I nodded in agreement. Chance and I are the same. We were rejected by our mothers, but accepted by our families. And my family would not be complete without Drake and Pennyworth.
