Chapter 32

No One's POV

"I was just asking her out" said Shadow. He paused at that to gauge some reaction from the two.

Alice looked at Shadow in surprise while Shun's glare intensified at Shadow's words. His body turned rigid, shoulders tensed and his fists clenched unconsciously at his sides which didn't go unnoticed by Shadow who couldn't help but smirk at Shun. It was obvious that Shadow was just making Shun all riled up and he mentally cheered that he was doing a good job at it. After all, it was his favorite pastime for his foes and he knew Shun doesn't like it when he talks like that. Shadow shrugged his shoulders as he continued talking after a moment of silence.

"- …if I could walk her to her house but she turned down my offer" Shadow continued, holding back his smirk at Shun. "Well… I would love to chat with you more Alice-chan but it's getting late and I have to be somewhere" he added.

"Ah, yes… Thanks for staying and chatting with me!" Alice said and smiled as she picked up her bag from the bench.

"Be careful on your way. See ya around, Alice-chan, Kazami" said Shadow as he left the two. Since Shun was there, he knew he can leave now that she won't be alone even if she stayed longer. Kazami is a responsible person… more than him, he thought.

Alice waved a "Bye" to Shadow. When he left, she turned away from Shun to leave. Not really knowing what to say, she resorted on…

"Bye…" she muttered hurriedly and left.

Shun watched as she walked away. He knew she was angry at him as well as frustrated so he didn't say anything. He knew how awkward it must be for her to be standing with him after all that has happened so he let her be. Her reaction just now gave him a pretty good idea that she doesn't want to talk to him and he respects that. Besides, he wasn't there to explain things, he was there because he saw Shadow with her who mostly bullies their students. But he was rather surprised today… Shadow Prove had behaved different, contrary to what he used to do. At least, Vestal students are keeping their promise of not messing with their students. Shadow meant no harm to their student but still it irked Shun when he saw him with Alice. He shook his head and left with his bike in annoyance.

He doesn't like the fact that Alice preferred to talk to Shadow who used to bully their student instead of him…

A Few Days later…

After School…

Service Club room

"Hello, Keith-senpai!" came chorus of greetings from the fellow club members when their blonde senpai stepped in.

"Hello, guys…" Keith's voice trailed at the end when he saw their unenthusiastic faces.

Keith blinked in surprise. The reason... Dan was sitting in far corner of the room and writing something in a book. Dan with books when there were no exams was really odd. Keith glanced around the Service club room. His dear sister Mira looked like she was writing something in a book too. Probably doing some Calculus assignment, he concluded. Baron sat across from her and was reading some Shounen manga. Alice wasn't in the room since she had 'punishment'. Keith sighed. The club room looked the same yet it somehow had different vibe these past few days… Alice had not been her usual self and Dan had told them he had seen her crying but she hasn't told them the reason yet and they were fine with it as she will tell them when she wants to. She looked fine but she wasn't, he knew. She had been avoiding the school president and he almost chuckled at the thought. Well… he wasn't sure if the others noticed and he wondered if she'll keep avoiding the hotshot. Of course, the said hotshot knows that too since he seems to be out of it although he tries to hide it and student council members keep avoiding the subject, he had noticed. He also wanted to know the reason but whenever Dan asked Alice, the atmosphere turns… gloomy. On the other hand, Runo had been ignoring Dan and his… well… everything. The troublemaker brunette hasn't gotten in any argument or trouble this week at all which was surprising and very odd to all the students and teachers. His sister Mira was still perturbed about losing her video game for which she had accused Ace of stealing. But since Ace denied it and agreed to help her find it, she has no one to blame so she's always… moody. He knows because he has been eating instant noodles for dinner for past two days… Unlike his calm, cool and reserved self, Keith himself was feeling quite frustrated and a little concerned too. At least, Baron was normal…

'How many days do I have to watch them like this?' Keith wondered.

"What are you doing, Dan…?" asked Keith. He couldn't help asking when he saw Dan was thinking deeply…

"Ha? Oh… this? I was making a list of guys who I have to interrogate. I'm sure one of them made Alice cry" Dan explained, flipping the list and showing it in Keith's direction.

"What?!" the others exclaimed in surprise.

"And I finally thought he's taking his studies seriously" Mira shook her head.

"Alice-san will be upset if she knows this…" Baron commented to which Dan sighed.

"And you're usually following Runo around this time… At least, this is your schedule for few days" Keith stated causing Dan to glare at him.

"Give me a break, Keith-senpai" Dan slumped his shoulders. "I'm more concerned for Alice… She's cried because of some guy and… She won't tell us who he is! I know you guys know she isn't herself these past few days. I'm worried because she stays alone in that small apartment and she only has us to rely on… I'll find that guy and make him apologize to her! That's the least I can do to bring her back to her normal self" he continued, leaning back on the wall and closing his eyes.

"What happened, Dan…? You know something we don't…" Keith stated, frowning and Dan nodded, now looking at them. Mira and Baron listened attentively.

"Yesterday… I bumped into Shadow from Vestal Academy" Dan said, making the other three frown more. "He told me that I wasn't that good of a friend as he thought I was… since I couldn't even look after my friend. He told me he met Alice a few days ago and she was sitting in an empty park in the dark. He told me he had to keep her company since there were some funky guys around. I think we owe him… I'm just… upset that I didn't even notice she's that upset" he explained. He stood up from the floor with his book and dusted his pants before saying, "Well, I'm off to investigate since we don't have any requests. Call me if anything comes up. See ya!"

By now Keith, Mira and Baron were surprised at the story. They watched as Dan left the room and closed the door after him. Dan didn't sound his cheerful self at all nowadays even when he greets them. They glanced at each other, unable to react. It felt odd to hear that the student from the rival school who was always in search of a chance of bullying their students had helped their friend. It was a good thing though, they thought simultaneously.

Meanwhile…

"So Alice-chan, did you ask Kazami-kun to come to Noriko-chan's party yet?" asked Celia.

"I… asked. But he refused…" replied Alice, slightly upset that she couldn't help Celia. 'She had wanted to surprise Noriko-san…' she thought when she saw Celia looking sad.

"Oh…" Celia sounded upset. "It's okay… You tried. Anyway, you're coming right? You have to!" she insisted.

"I…" Alice looked uncomfortable.

"Please? You see… We also asked Keith-senpai but he said he can't since he has something to do that day. And Noriko-chan's friends from other schools will be there who wanted to meet you guys after that spectacular performance! It would look bad if none of the star cast show up…" Celia explained.

Alice sighed as she knew Keith had refused since he was busy that day and she didn't want to attend the party alone. She wanted to refuse but looking at Celia's hope filled expression, she was debating. 'Few minutes won't hurt anyway' she thought and shrugged off her thoughts.

"Alright… I'll be there for some time, Celia-san" Alice said.

"It's okay! We won't keep you long! See you at the party!" with that Celia left.

Alice smiled a little when she saw Celia's face lit up when she agreed. She resumed walking. She felt exhausted with all the thoughts in her mind. She had decided that she will keep her distance from the 'Kaichou' like she used to do but it was difficult since she could practically see him everywhere and also, he was always a 'common hot topic' among the girls. The worse was, the one whose thoughts occupied her mind sits right behind her and they're also partners for science which was difficult for her to ignore… Not to forget that she also has to follow through her punishment of assisting Student Council where she was heading to now. So… to sum it up… it was inevitable. She passed by the students, some greeted her and she greeted them back. She passed the Drama clubroom when someone called her.

"Alice!" Fabia called the ginger head causing her to halt in her steps.

"Hello, Fabia!" Alice greeted with a smile.

"I wanted to talk about Dan" Fabia said and Alice raised her eyebrows. "He is walking around and interrogating students… specifically boys. Ren told me that he's looking for some guy. I was just about to come to your clubroom to tell you" she continued.

"What!" Alice exclaimed with wide eyes. "I have to find him! Do you know his whereabouts?" she asked Fabia who pulled out her cell phone and dialed 'Danma Kuso'.

"He isn't picking up" Fabia informed.

"Thanks! I'll find him!" Alice waved as she took off. She was moving with hurried steps and pausing every now and then to ask about Dan.

Some Time Later…

School Gym…

"After everything we went through together, you still made her cry?" Dan asked, furious when Lync stared at him questioningly. "Don't even try to deny because I know it's you!" he exclaimed, pointing his index finger at Lync.

Dan had been asking questions to the 'suspects' when he came across Joe who had given him some valuable information with his case that led Dan to the culprit. Apparently, Joe had been a witness to the incident few days ago. Joe had seen Lync and Alice in the hallway, talking and was about to go on his way but he noticed Alice looking upset and hurt. Lync had said something but then Alice had ran off, crying. Joe had also seen her bumping into Dan but since Dan had followed her, Joe went on his way. After getting the information, Dan set off to find Lync who was in the middle of volleyball practice. Dan had dragged Lync by his forearm and led him to the side, away from others.

"What? I didn't-… Oh… that…" Lync said, finally understanding what Dan was talking about. He sighed, "Dan… Look… I'm sorry. I'm already feeling-…"

"What did you do? You do know I can't stand my friends getting hurt!" said Dan, emphasizing each word clearly. Lync looked down at the floor, guiltily.

"I know… It's just… I didn't mean to hurt her. I mean, it wasn't my intention and I didn't know she was listening-…"

"So you accept it's your fault. Good! Then I don't need any more reason 'coz you deserve a punch!" stated Dan and was about punch Lync but someone had grabbed his wrist mid-air, halting him on the spot.

"Stop, Dan"

Dan glared at Shun who had gripped his wrist while Lync was surprised to see the student council president there. Lync was yet again saved from a punch but this time stood firm as if accepting the punishment. He thought that maybe Dan's punch will bring down his guilt to some extent. He felt so responsible and at fault that he didn't even visit the Service club room when Alice had asked him few times if he could come for English tutoring lessons; he had made lame excuses. On the other hand, some other sports club members as well as the Volleyball club members including the club president Chan Lee were shocked at the scene. They had never seen Dan like this and were glad that Shun interfered in the nick of time. They paused in their practice and watched the trio from distance.

"Shun, this guy deserves it! No one hurts my friends and get away with it" Dan stated, firmly.

"It's not his fault. It's mine" Shun's statement made Dan speechless while Lync was shocked. "He has done nothing" he added as he let go of Dan's wrist.

"W-wha-…?" Dan sputtered out, disbelievingly but he knew Shun wouldn't lie about something like this. Lync stood in silence.

"He was merely asking questions and I answered with the wrong choice of words… involving her" replied Shun and sighed. "Let's talk in the office. Don't make a scene here" he added, making Dan angrier than he already was.

"What do you expect? You made her cry, Shun. One of my friend hurts my other friend and you're telling me I'm making a scene? What the hell did you say anyway?" Dan snapped but he tried to keep his voice in check and Shun looked at him wearily.

Dan was in a rare predicament. If it was any other guy, he would have definitely thrown a few punches by now but… It turned out to be his best friend (Yes, he had accepted the fact) and rival. And knowing his best friend, there must be a VERY big reason behind the incident. He knew he was making a scene but he doesn't care at the moment. He turned his head to look away from Shun. On the other hand, Shun knew Dan was disappointed in him. Dan had declared him rival since the first time they had met as kids and he had always tried to outdo Shun in everything… except studies, of course… Dan had even joined Service club just because Shun was opposed to it in the beginning to tick him off. But aside from all their rivalry… they held respect for each other which led to their friendship. Shun knew Dan respect him as much as he did to the brunette but at the very moment… Dan couldn't look at Shun and Shun had never felt an urge to avoid looking at someone in the eyes.

"I'll tell you if you agree to come to the Student Council room" Shun broke the ice.

"You shouldn't be demanding since YOU are at fault here" said Dan, walking past Shun.

Shun sighed. "Volan, don't blame yourself. You had just acted on impulse, I understand" he said, passing Lync.

"I… apologize, President" Lync said causing Shun to pause. "I provoked you… which I shouldn't have. I didn't knew you-…uh… never mind" he paused and sighed, looking away.

"Hn… Just don't jump to conclusions again" with that said, Shun followed his brunette friend.

Meanwhile…

Service Club room

"Ugh! Dan is so messy!" Mira complained as she picked up books and papers scattered around Dan's bag in the corner.

"Leave his stuff, Mira-chan. He'll be back soon" said Baron, causing Mira to throw a glare at him. He sweated and put his hands up in defense.

"Seriously… you boys…" Mira sighed as she took out some chips packets and chocolates from Dan's bag before putting the books in the bag. "I'm just cleaning up-…" she paused as she pulled out the thing that was occupying the space to make room for other books. She gasped when she saw it.

"T-That's…" Baron stuttered with wide eyes and gulped.

"Dan is so gonna be dead"
