Chapter 34

No One's POV

Kuso Residence

"Dan isn't ready for school yet?" asked Dan's father, Shinjiro Kuso, as he ate his breakfast.

"That boy! I called him down thirty minutes ago! He'll be late!" exclaimed Dan's mother, Miyako, pouring some tea and juice in glasses for the two as she called out "Daaan! Come-…!"

"You guys are so noisy in the morning… Good morning anyway" Dan entered the kitchen and sighed. "Dad, I need a ride to school today" he added as he took his seat.

"Sure. And good morning, son" his father greeted with a smile. "I heard you had a fight again" he added, looking at Dan with a straight face and Dan gulped.

"N-No! I didn't! It was… just…uh… an argument!"

"Dan, an argument doesn't give you such bruise" his mother added. "Next time I see a bruise on your face, you will be grounded for a month, no games or hanging out" she glared.

"But it's not my fault! It was Runo-!" Dan stopped and groaned when he slipped the truth out. His parents sighed.

"Anyway… Are you alright? You look tired too" Shinjiro said as Dan looked exhausted.

"Because I didn't sleep" Dan replied while rubbing his eyes and his parents raised their eyebrows. "All because of her!" he gritted out, glaring in space.

"Ohh…" his parents glanced at each other and smirked while Dan yawned.

"Because of her…? So it has come to this, huh" Shinjiro said.

"He must have spent the night thinking about her" Miyako commented.

"Yea-… Eh? …thinking… what? Who?" Dan blinked.

"You're talking about Runo-chan, right?" Miyako enquired.

"Runo?! Why should I? She's so immature! Hmph!" Dan huffed.

"Then why did you stayed up all night…?" Shinjiro asked.

"Because of Mira! She told me to complete all my pending assignments by today or something worse will be waiting for me!" he told them. "Girls are so stubborn, man!" he grumbled as he ate his breakfast.

His parents could only face palm…

"So what is troubling you, my son?" asked Shinjiro as he drove his car while Dan sat on the passenger seat.

"You can always tell, Dad" Dan chuckled.

"Well, I'm your father" Shinjiro smiled and added "And it's something to do with Runo-chan, right?"

Dan sighed before saying "Yeah. I had a fight with Runo… but it's different this time. There's something-… I said things I shouldn't have and she's hurt. I don't like this"

"Hmm… I know you'd never hurt her or anyone else intentionally"

"Right? I apologized many times! I don't know what else I should do"

"You should make it up to her if this affects you so much. That's what I do when your mom and I fight"

"Ha? You mean… giving a present or flowers, something like that?" Dan pointed out and his father shrugged. "But you two are married and love each other! Runo and I-I…! Never mind! She won't move with such things" he said, thoughtfully while his father was smiling.

"Then you have to figure it out yourself, son"

Bakugan High

"Good morning, Mira! Keith-senpai!" greeted Alice with a smile.

"Good-… You look happy. Did something good happen, Alice?" Mira enquired in surprise.

"Good morning, Alice! Mira is happy too since she got back her video game" Keith said. "I'm happy to see you two are happy" he added with a relieved smile.

"Aa… Well, I realized something… that I had overlooked before" Alice replied, smiling sheepishly.

"Finally! Is it about Kaichou?" Keith asked with a smirk.

"H-How did you know…?" Alice blinked in surprise while Mira raised her eyebrows.

"Well, I took mind reading classes-…"

"Shut it, Brother. There is no such class" Mira cut in.

"You're no fun" Keith sighed while Mira and Alice sweatdropped. "Anyway, what's all the commotion outside?" he asked as he glanced at the students through the exit, pointing at the crowd outside.

"Morning, guys!" Baron greeted, cheerfully. "You didn't know? There's new student joining us. He must have arrived" he informed and the others 'Hmm'-ed.

"He? Must be a son of some big shot considering the crowd" Keith said, uninterested.

"Isn't it too late to join…?" Mira enquired while the others shrugged since they didn't knew anything about the new guy.

"Hey, I heard the new amusement park is opening this week and my favorite band will be performing there! Aint' that great?" Baron grinned.

"Cool! Let all go on Sunday!" Mira said and the others agreed. "By the way, has anyone seen Dan?" she asked.

"Yeah. He's sleeping in class right now-…" Baron informed but was interrupted by the bell and they all dashed off to their classrooms. The crowd outside followed their suit.

"See ya later guys!"

Some Time later…

"Cruel…" Dan mumbled in his sleep.

"Danma-kun, wake up!"

"THE HELL!" Dan woke up, startled and glanced around only to realize he was in his class room.

"I believe this is a classroom and not the hell, Danma-kun" his English teacher, Arakawa-sensei, told him and the class erupted in laughter.

"S-Sorry, Sensei!" Dan apologized, smiling sheepishly.

"I'll let it slide this once if you have done your assignments, Danma-kun… Pending work included" Arakawa-sensei stated with a forced smile.

"I have it!" Dan said, surprising the others expect Baron who was smiling.

"Eeehhhh?!" the class exclaimed.

"R-really…? I'm g-glad you're finally taking it seriously" the teacher chocked in happiness and the class sweatdropped.

Dan recalled how Mira put him to complete his assignments yesterday as his repentance for stealing her game. She had said she would spare him her wrath if he would stay up and complete all his assignments since he already had a bruised face, she couldn't beat him. He had no choice but to accept and he had stayed up all night to complete all of them without any help.

"A-ahh! That was a piece of cake, Sensei…" Dan forced a grin while Baron snickered.

Principal Office

"Welcome to Bakugan High" Shiori smiled at the new student.

"Thank you. It's an honor, Kazami-sama" the new student, Anubias, bowed and stood straight while Shiori did a quick inspection of the student before her then looked in the file in her hands and at the forms he filled.

Anubias glanced around the office, taking note of awards and trophies of the school achievements of the past years. He had untamed silver hair and light brown eyes. He was in school uniform and Shiori could tell that he had been trying to tame his hair with his hand from time to time. His academic record in past school was good and it was expected since he was the son of an industrialist and his father was strict on the matter of education.

"Well… I have talked to your father and everything is taken care of! So you just have to focus on your academics. Any questions?" she asked and he shook his head 'no'.

"Well… If you have any more queries than you can talk to Student council or to the office staff" she said before looking at the door. "Come in, Shun" she called and her son entered with his cool aura.

"Shun, he is our new student, Jelani Anubias and he's Kazami Shun, the Student Council president. He'll take care of you for now" Shiori introduced the boys who looked at each other and frowned.

"You're…! You're that arrogant freak!" Anubias snapped with a glare at Shun whose eyebrow twitched.

"Hn. The spoiled brat from Okinawa, aren't you? Just great" Shun's sarcasm was evident.

"Tch"

"Great! You two know each other. But whatever it is, don't fight or you'll get detention, my dear students. It'd look VERY bad on your first day, Anubias and on Student Council record, Shun" Shiori warned with a crude smile which caused the two to go quiet. "Shun, he's the new student so…" she sent a knowing look at Shun.

"Welcome to Bakugan High" Shun said, monotonously as he glanced at Anubias who rolled his eyes.

"Shun, update on the fundraiser event" Shiori told her son.

"It'll all be decided in today's meeting. We've a report but we need to make a few adjustments. I'll bring the report after the meeting, Mom" Shun informed.

"Okay. If there's nothing else, you two are dismissed" she said, dismissing the two since she was busy. "Oh and Shun, can you show him his class and tour him around later? Thank you" she wasn't asking, Shun knew.

"Thank you, Kazami-sama" Anubias said while Shun muttered a "Yes, Kazami-sama" before they exited.

Lunch break…

Shun walked through the hallways, looking for Alice. He had sent a text message to her but she hadn't replied back. Of course, she was still angry, he thought. He had been thinking what he will tell her and opted on telling her the truth that Lync was getting on his nerves, spouting nonsense and he just lost it. He was still trying to adjust with the discovery of his new found feelings and it would be too sudden if he just went blurting his feelings out. He was sure it'll make an absolute breaking news of the school if anyone finds out. Kazami Shun falling in love is next to impossible is what everyone thought and he had believed it too. Besides, he didn't want her to be the target of rumors again nor he want her to suffer anymore because of him. Right now, he just wanted everything between them to be normal, like it was before.

Because of the principal's orders, he had been busy touring the new student, Anubias, who was supposed to arrive next week but due to some circumstances he joined a week early. They didn't talk much and Shun, being the Student council president, had to welcome him. The two were secretly glad they were in different grades although in the same year. They had met in Okinawa when Shun had went to meet his grandfather and they didn't get along. Since Shun was being Shun and Anubias always takes his rivalries very seriously, Anubias didn't like the fact that Shun won the Island's Martial Arts Tournament by beating him. Anubias's father don't take such things lightly so he had to face consequences which Shun didn't knew. Shun had merely participated because of his grandfather's insistence. Well… all in all… that was a bad start and didn't end well.

He sighed. Later, Ace and Julie also introduced themselves to the new student along the way. The new student was a bit eccentric as Ace had commented since he stated one of his reason to come there was to see a girl when Julie asked his reason for joining their school instead of Vestal Academy considering his grades and status. Shun stepped in because of Julie's over friendliness. He doesn't care if the guy was an heir to JG Industries or their past as long as the new student behaves. Sudden transfer of students always makes his day busier than usual. Good thing Marucho offered to tour the guy around the rest of the place later since it was clearly shown on Shun and Anubias's face they didn't like each other. The new guy was already the talk of the school and popular among girls just in half day.

All his thoughts dissolved when he finally found the ginger haired beauty sitting under the tree, her regular spot. He had a hunch he would find her there. He was determined to talk to her today and he'll justify himself. She was sitting with Mira, Baron and Keith. He was sure Keith glanced his way since everyone except Alice went somewhere leaving her. He walked towards her while she looked immersed in her book. On the other hand, Alice glanced up when she saw someone's shadow over her and stood up with a smile.

"I thought you'd be busy" Alice said to him and Shun blinked in surprise that she was smiling at him.

"I… sent you a text" Shun said, suddenly feeling hard to converse with her.

"Oh. My cellphone ran out of battery" she told him. "Well that aside, I wanted to talk to you about the other day" she said and he gave her a curt nod.

At the Same Time…

Anubias had been looking for the President of the Service club. He was surprised when he had heard her name from one of his classmates who had advised him to go to the Service club if he needs help with something. And since then, he was eager to see if she was really the same girl from his childhood who had helped him back then. He had searched the whole school building but didn't see her. He decided to ask someone but then he saw her… She was sitting alone, under a tree a few meters away. She was cute as a child but now she's grown to be a beautiful young lady. He took a step forward but paused. He frowned when he saw the Student council president reaching her. And… she looked happy to see him.

'Are they dating…?' was his first thought but decided to observe. After all, he was very perceptive. 'Kazami, huh?' he frowned since the Kazami looked slightly nervous, judging by his body language. He knew by now, Kazami Shun was quite popular around. He couldn't hear their conversation but it was time he interfered. And it was a thing with his ego… he can't stand guys like him. Besides, he had a score to settle with him. He smirked as he dashed in their direction.

"I wanted to talk about that too. I didn't mean to-…" he was being tense and she noticed.

"I know" she said. "I know you didn't mean to" she added and he raised his eyebrows.

"Hn…?"

"I'm sorry… for my behavior" she apologized, looking slightly embarrassed and he was surprised at that.

He shook his head once and spoke "Don't apologize. It's my fault so… I'm sorry, Alice. I wanted to tell you that I didn't mean to hurt you or offend you"

"It's okay…" she said. "All those rumors must have affected you too and I just disregarded that fact. So I can understand why you said all those things. I mistook your actions, Kaichou" she told him. He raised his eyebrows in question at her last statement so she continued.

"You said all that so that the rumors will die out, right? If you had defended me then the rumors would only worsen. Besides, I know you don't think of me as a friend-…"

'She knows?' Shun blinked in surprise and his heart sped up in anticipation as she continued.

"-but a rival. You had said it too"

'The hell?' Shun's hope filled face turned blank and he stood still as he stared at her without blinking.

"I should've known you wouldn't like to be friends just like that. I mean, you've known Dan since childhood yet-…"

"Rival…?" he stated plainly, looking away from her. He was frowning and Alice paused, confused.

A few beats passed as Shun contemplated what he did wrong that she reached such conclusion. Weren't his actions towards her till now enough? He even told her she was special! Although, surprisingly he wasn't really feeling angry or disappointed at her at all. He decided he'll ponder over this later since he was here to justify himself which he wasn't really good at, he just need to be straightforward. He exhaled and ran his hand through his hair before speaking.

"Listen, Alice… Rivalry being aside, I want you to know-…"

"I finally found you, Alice-san!" a shockingly happy voice interrupted the atmosphere around the two who looked at the source in surprise as he continued "Pease excuse my interruption. But I'm really just happy to see you again so I couldn't stop myself"

Shun frowned at the new student. How dare he interrupt him at such a crucial moment! On the other hand, Anubias had approached them and held Alice's hands in his as he really looked very happy. Shun glared at him as the new guy was being too familiar with Alice while Alice knitted her eyebrows in thinking.

"I… umm… excuse me, but I… Do I know you…?" Alice asked with a smile although she was uncomfortable with the sudden intrusion.

"Of course, you wouldn't remember… It's been so long" Anubias said as he smiled at Alice and let go of her hands. "I'm Anubias. We were classmates back in elementary school" he told her and he could feel gears turning in Alice's head. The name did ring bell in her mind.

"Oh, yes! I'm sorry I didn't recognize you. You look so different now. Your hair…" Alice smiled and paused.

"Yeah, my hair was wild, I know" Anubias completed and they both laughed while Shun had an urge to strangle the silver haired boy. "Hello, Kaichou-san. I hope I'm not interfering in something important" he stared at Shun, his look challenging.

"Actually, you are" Shun deadpanned. "We were talking something important" he added, frown never leaving his face while Alice nodded.

"Sorry, my bad" Anubias said but he didn't look a bit sorry. In fact, he shot a taunting smirk at Shun before turning to Alice "We have so much to catch on. I'll wait there for you" he pointed at a distance and left before anyone could say anything. And true enough, he waited for her.

"He's changed… I almost didn't recognize him" Alice chuckled while Shun glared at Anubias's back. She turned to Shun with a smile "Anyway, what were you saying?"

"Nothing… Your childhood classmate is waiting" Shun told her and turned to leave. His lips twitched upwards in smile when she held his sleeve to halt him.

"Shun..." he felt she had called his name after so long and turned his head to face her. She had a tender look as she gazed in his eyes and she spoke "what I wanted to say is… I want to be your friend. I'll earn your friendship. It seems challenging but I will"

He stared at her face for moment before saying "You seem too confident. Then I guess I have no choice but to show you it's not that simple as you think it is" he told her, his usual style.

"What do you mean…? Are you challenging me?" she asked and he just shrugged. "Well, I accept" she declared and he smirked.

Now, he had her attention…

Meanwhile

"What… is this…?" Ace blinked.

"It's… juice, of course" Mira replied, extending the can to his face.

"I know that. For…?" Ace enquired, skeptically as he moved away from it.

"Just take it. It's for… you!" she exclaimed and he was surprised. "As an apology for suspecting you of stealing…" she told him, looking away from him.

"I would say you totally thought the perpetrator was me" he told her.

"A-ah… Well… I'm sorry"

"You found out the real culprit finally?" he asked.

"Yes, accidently… Actually, it wasn't the case of stealing… It was-…"

"-Dan" he completed, looking straight ahead and she was surprised.

"You knew…? How?"

"Hn. He can't keep quiet once he starts babbling" Ace shrugged in amusement while Mira chuckled.

"Aa… He told me he was testing my 'detective' sense and he concluded I was so slow!" she huffed.

'I agree' he thought.

"Like saying that in his defense will save him from penance" she muttered to herself. "Well, he actually brought it yesterday to return it back but I got it first. But why didn't you tell me it was him if you knew?" she asked.

"Because it wasn't the case of stealing? Besides, you wouldn't have believed me" he told her and she knew he was right.

"…It's… uh… well… I'd like to make amends for that so I'll let you have it this whole week"

"Fine. I forgive you" he said, taking the can of juice from her. "And I would like it if you would stop suspecting me every time and believe me sometimes. You aren't always right about everything" he told her, peeling off the cap and taking a sip of the drink.

"You're still angry, huh? Well… how about another juice?" she asked, extending her strawberry juice to him. "I have some chocolates too" she pulled out some chocolates from her pocket and extended close to his face.

"I don't want it! I said you're forgiven already!"

"Okay… So no hard feelings?"

"Yeah. And thanks for the juice"

"Hmm. Come to Service club after school for that game" she said as she turned to leave. "You aren't that bad" she smiled and left.

"Took you long enough" he muttered to himself and smiled as he watched her walk away.

Some Time later

Alice made her way to the roof. She was feeling happy after she talked with Shun and not to forget her meeting her classmate from childhood. She noticed how the boy had changed. He was a… bully back then but he had changed for the better and she was glad. They weren't that acquainted and she's surprised that he still remembers her.

"Hey, Keith-senpai! You're here alone?" she asked, glancing around before settling her eyes on the blonde senpai. The wind ruffled their hair.

"Aa. Just enjoying some peace and quiet" Keith replied and smiled at her in greeting. "Besides, Mira went to talk to Ace" he told her and sighed.

"I'm surprised you let her" she laughed a little and he shrugged.

"She was wrong so she should apologize. Well, she's repenting on her mistake so its fine" he told her.

"That's nice to hear. You're letting her on her own more this year" she commented.

"Yeah. I realized she'll be fine on her own now" he smiled then his smile faltered. "Are you saying that I was being an overprotective brother?" he narrowed his eyes at her.

"You weren't?" she said and they both starting laughing.

"You're in good spirits. You talked to Kaichou, I guess" he said after a pause.

"Yes, we did. And I was right… It was just a misunderstanding" she smiled then her smile faltered as she spoke "I misjudge him… Now I understand why he's so reserved and only have few friends. Friendship is all about trust… And I failed, in his case. No wonder he doesn't consider me as a friend yet"

"Well, it's all good as long as you learned something from this" Keith smiled. 'So he didn't tell her… I wonder why. And here I thought he's smart' he had an urge to slap his forehead. He frowned, thinking there must be some reason…

"Hmm. I did! But I… feel bad that I behaved so rudely to him…" she looked sad, he noticed.

"Don't look so sad. I'm sure he understands" he assured, patting her shoulder. "By the way, if you don't mind me asking, what did he say?" he enquired. He wasn't the one who would pry but he couldn't help when it comes to Mira and Alice.

"Well, when I told him I want to be his friend and I'll earn his friendship… he told me it's not that simple I think it is" she repeated Shun's words. "I mean, what's so hard? I understand he's very reserved and all…" she sighed and paused in thinking.

"You don't understand him" he told her after a pause and chuckled when she said "Well, I'm trying"

"Anyway, I heard you turned down yet another guy" he said and she smiled sheepishly at him.

"Oh. Well… Tomoya-san is a nice guy but… I'm not interested" she told him.

"You always say that. What if there's a guy who's really serious about you?" he asked which surprised her.

"I don't know… I've always avoided the subject but it worries me sometimes…" she replied, thinking as she gazed up at the sky. She sighed before looking at him "I mean… I'm an only child so I have lots of responsibilities. I want to help my grandpa. I need to focus on my studies and school and nothing else. I just don't want any distractions and I want to focus on my goals, that's all… I can't help but think like this"

"That doesn't mean you can't fall in love"

"You're right… But loving someone needs dedication and there are lot of other things too. It's not that easy"

"I understand..."

"And I feel like I won't be able to accomplish my ambition. I know it's silly but…" she said and paused.

"Aa… Everyone have their own reasons" he shrugged. "Well, lunch break is almost over so we should head back" he said.

"Oh! I'll go ahead. See ya later!" with that Alice dashed off.

Once Alice left, Keith leaned on the railing and smiled in amusement.

'So I underestimated you, Kaichou… You're a lot more observant and smart than I thought'
