A/N: And here's the epilogue :). It's taken a long time but we finally made it to the end! Thank you so much to everyone who stuck this out, went back and reread chapters to keep on track, helped me better myself. This one is for you guys!
I can't say that I'm surprised when I come downstairs and look at the cake that I had literally just frosted about five minutes ago. There's a giant chunk missing. And not a slice, like someone had cut themselves a piece, oh no, that would be too easy. Someone had literally grabbed a handful of my cake. I stomp into the living room where Paul is sitting with P.J, staring uncharacteristically at the TV. "Is there something you would like to tell me, Paul?" I ask, arms folded across my chest.
P.J looks up at me. "Hi mommy!" He says. "Uncle Paul ate your cake."
Paul looks down at him. "Hey! I gave you five dollars not to tell." He says indignantly. "She never would have found out."
I roll my eye. "Paul, you have frosting on your cheek." I say, slapping the back of his head. "That was for Levi's birthday! I promised Emily that I would have it ready for tomorrow and now I have to make another one."
"Oops, P.J, I think I made your mom mad." He stage whispers and P.J giggles. "I think we should go see Aunt Rachel before she gets the spoon out and starts whacking me with it. What do you say? Want to have a sleepover?"
He looks up at me with big eyes. "Can I stay at Uncle Paul and Aunt Rachel's? Please? Please?"
I fight a smile. "Fine, go ahead. Go get Uncle Paul to help you pack your stuff. And Paul, make sure he's in bed by nine please. And please remember to be at Emily's tomorrow for noon for Levi's party!" I call after their retreating figures.
"Yeah, okay!" The ghost of his voice floats down the hall. I can hear the two of them giggling and I smile and shake my head, heading into the kitchen to start on another cake.
Warm hands are suddenly on my shoulder, pulling my hair out of the way and lips are kissing the back of my neck. I shudder as he whispers in my ear. "I see Paul got into the cake. I told you not to leave baked goods unattended around him."
I turn to face Jared. "I went to the bathroom for less than five minutes and there was a giant handful missing like he's some kind of caveman!" I sigh and gesture my head towards it. "It's up for grabs if you want a slice though. I have to make a new one for tomorrow. Oh and P.J is staying at Paul and Rachel's tonight."
He leans forward to kiss me and smiles into it. "Good. I haven't had you to myself in a long time." His body is pressed against mine, and my arms wind around his neck unconsciously.
"Oh no! My eyes! P.J, don't look, save yourself!" Paul exclaims from behind us, lifting P.J into his arms and shielding his eyes.
P.J laughs and waves from his spot on top of Paul's shoulders. "Hi daddy! I'm going for a sleepover!"
Jared laughs and steps forward to kiss P.J's cheek. "I see that buddy. I'll see you tomorrow at Levi's party and be good for Uncle Paul."
Paul puckers his lips. "Aren't you going to give me a kiss too?" He purrs, waggling his brows.
Jared rolls his eyes. "One of these days I'm actually going to kiss you and you are going to regret all the times you've brought it up."
"Touché." He waves to me. "Bye Kim. Sorry about the cake."
Yeah I really doubt that. The door shuts behind them and I sigh, slumping into Jared's arms. "Help me finish this cake please. Or else we won't have any time together tonight because I'll be too tired and frustrated and mad at Paul." I pause and then laugh. "Well I'm always mad at Paul but you know."
"Of course I'll help you with the cake. But first…" He trails off, grabbing a fork and digging into the mangled cake. I laugh and go back to stirring the batter.
"Emily?" I call, holding the cake steady so that it doesn't fall and pushing the door open.
"In the kitchen!" She calls. I go to take a step and a three-year-old speeding by me and running under my legs almost takes me out. I gasp and hold back my swear as Emily's voice floats out again. "Levi! Stop running around before you take someone out!"
With my eyes glued to my surroundings, I make it into the kitchen and triumphantly place the cake on the counter. Emily smiles at me, and I gesture to the cake. "Cake number two because the first one had a handful taken by Paul. Literally just grabbed it with his hand."
She shakes her head. "See, I'm surprised but I'm also not." The door opens and she perks. "Oh that should be Embry! He's supposed to be bringing the Piñata." Sure enough, he walks into the kitchen carrying a giant Piñata. "Thanks Embry. Did you manage to fill it?"
"You're lucky I went with him. The idiot actually thought it came pre filled." The voice behind him says and then breaks into a laugh when Embry's dark skin turns darker. Ellie wraps her arms around him and kisses him under the jaw. "I promised I wouldn't tell the guys, I never said anything about Emily and Kim."
She skips to my side and eyes the cake. "Wow, that cake looks amazing. It smells amazing too. Is Levi here? Can he blow out the candles so I can have a piece?"
I start to laugh and then I stop at look at her, the way she's staring at the cake, the way her hand is placed slightly on her stomach. "Oh my god, you're pregnant!" I blurt out before I can stop myself.
Both her and Embry freeze and she stares at me with wide eyes. "Uh- I- Ah shit. Embry was doing so well keeping it from the guys and I can't even hide it from one person!" She exclaims, pouting.
Emily has one hand over her smiling mouth and puts a hand on Embry's arm. "That's so great, congratulations to you both. Don't worry, Kim and I can keep a secret."
I smile at her. "Yeah, I won't tell… If you won't tell." I place my own hand on my stomach and wink at her.
Her mouth falls open. "You- and- I-" And then she starts bawling her eyes out and wraps me into a hug. Oh yeah, she's definitely pregnant. It took me a long time to figure out that Embry had imprinted on Ellie after Paul and Rachel's wedding. In fact, I can't believe how it had just gone right over my head. I thought that she just thought he was cute or something. And no one had said anything to me because they thought I knew. I remember my conversation with her at the end of the week…
I couldn't help but cry while hugging Ellie. Over the past year, even though we had made our best efforts to visit each other, it was still hard. She had been a huge part of my recovery during my darker years and having her so far from me was a struggle. "Saying goodbye is always hard." I mutter, wiping my eyes.
She doesn't seem sad, though. Or at least, not as sad as she usually is when we say goodbye. She has a shimmer of happiness in her eyes. "I know, but just look at it this way, now that Embry and I are together, I'll be seeing a lot more of you. And of course, it won't be long until I move down here. Oh maybe Embry and I can build a house right by you and Jared and we can be neighbours again!" She exclaims, hands on my shoulders.
I freeze. "Wait what? You and Embry are…together? I thought you guys were just flirting. And moving here? What are you talking about?"
Her eyes furrowed. "What are you talking about Kim? I mean, I guess I am making assumptions but now that Embry imprinted on me I don't think he'll want me living too far for long, and I don't want to be away from him either."
"He what!?"
She looked at me funny. "Kim, we thought you all knew. That's why no one said anything. Everyone knows, including Jared." She pauses and then she laughs again. "Of course you don't know. That's typical Kim. So smart in the books but so oblivious in the outside world."
I couldn't help but laugh with her as I processed the emotions running through me. "I can't believe it. You're part of the pack now."
She smiled proudly. "I'm part of the pack."
The present time Ellie nudges me. "Earth to Kim? Where did you go?"
I blush a little. "Honestly, I was just remembering when I didn't realize that Embry had imprinted on you."
Everyone bursts into laughter including people I hadn't realized had showed up, including Sam, Jared, Paul, Rachel and P.J, who is running up to give me a hug. I swoop him up and kiss his cheek. "Hi mommy! I'm going to go play with Levi." He declares and wiggles out of my grasp and takes off.
Emily calls after the boys. "Don't go too far boys! Once everyone is here we're doing cake!" Today was Levi's actual third birthday, so we were celebrating with the pack and then Emily was having her family down next weekend.
I step out of the kitchen to put my present down in the pile that had formed in the living room when the front door opens and Jacob and Leah pop through and wave. I rush over to hug both of them. "Hey! I didn't expect you guys to be here this weekend!" I exclaim happily. "I haven't seen you guys since Christmas. How are you guys? And how's Nessie and everyone?"
Jacob grins at me as Leah excuses herself into the kitchen to say hi to everyone. "Nessie is great. She started school and she's doing really well. She's been fitting in much better than her freaky family, which is probably because she doesn't sparkle and you know, actually eats food at school instead of daydreaming about sucking the blood of her lab partner." He laughs teasingly. It was Leah who had convinced Jacob to move with the Cullens when they decided it was time for them to relocate. He was unsure about leaving, but with the packs on good terms and Leah agreeing to go with him, it was definitely the easier choice. I still couldn't believe that their relationship had survived, but from what Quil and Embry told me about Jacob's head, he really doesn't see Nessie as anything but a sister and someone he needs to protect. I was really proud of him and happy that he was happy. And of course, Leah was a lot nicer now that she was living her own happily ever after.
It didn't take long for Quil to show up along with Claire, who had set off to join her cousin and P.J in running around the house, and soon after Seth, Collin and Brady all slid in and the house was full, as it normally was. In fact, standing in the kitchen with Emily, Ellie and Embry felt very weird considering how empty and quiet it was.
Emily ushered everyone into the kitchen and helped Levi onto the chair, with P.J standing right next to him clapping as we all sung happy birthday. My body floated unconsciously towards Jared, and he wrapped me up in his arms, one hand resting gently on my stomach as he kissed my hair.
It had been a long road. With everything that had happened with Jared and I, I couldn't believe that I was standing here, wrapped up in his arms, married with a four year old and a baby on the way. We took the long, hard way to get to this moment and as I stared out at everyone I loved…
P.J, Paul, Rachel, Ellie, Embry, Emily, Sam, Levi, Jacob, Leah, Quil, Claire, Seth, Collin, Brady, Jared… The faces of my family.
I wouldn't change a single thing.
