Ulrich has black hair and my eyes. He's a bit shorter than my new dad.
Yes, in case you haven't figured it out yet, he's shifted back into a man.
I shift back too and look at him. Yeah, I should definitely say wolf man.
His hair may be almost as long as mine and matted with twigs and grass like mine used to be but I can see that his ears are like mine.
He smiles. "My wolf girl. You knew me, you broke the spell. I can now live as a wolf man."
Oh.
"What does that mean for me? I have a new Dad now, I promised that I'd come back to him."
He laughs. "And so you will. I'd like to see him as well. May I talk with you first?"
I take in his ratty clothing, noticing that his black T-shirt and pants match my own, though he's not wearing shoes, socks or a hoodie and nod. "To answer your questions, Night Wind, I don't know where Mom is. We were separated in a house fire on the day that I found you. I don't know how it started. Are you more wolf than me?"
He nods then shows me that he has a wolf's tail. "You were a surprise. There has only been on wolf girl in the family besides you. Your great grandmother had raven's wings and your great grandfather always had wolf fur, tail and all. Together they had the last name we carry to this day."
So I do have bird. "I know Bird from her then?"
His smile widens. "Yes, wolf cub. I'd say you're 3 percent wolf and two percent bird. I am 7 percent wolf and 3 percent bird. I am so proud to see what you've become."
He hugs me. "Ember, you have the heart of a wolf. I believe that it led you to me."
I hug him back then he lets go and looks at me.
"I like your hoodie by the way."
He puts the hood up and laughs. "That suits a wolf girl very well!"
He grins, wide and toothy. "So has Little Gray Wolf Hood been to grandmother's house?"
I nod then we laugh together. I like the way it feels to laugh with him.
I stop at the sound of my new Dad. He's calling my name.
My name among the two legs...I mean humans. Not my wolf one.
I tell my...wolf Dad.
He nods and points to his right ear. "I know, Starlight, I heard him. We will go together, as we are, to see him."
I nod, not feeling sure what to say but hoping that this meeting will turn out all right.
Clark's P.O.V.
I hear two sets of feet coming my way. Wait, why are there two sets?
Oh.
Ember's wolf Dad and birth father are the same. They have the same eyes.
I catch a glimpse of a wolf's tail before he hides it and looks at me, not quite making eye contact, like how Ember would do.
"I am Ulrich Wolfram. I am Ember's...wolf father."
Ember looks slightly nervous. I guess she doesn't feel sure how this meeting will go.
Well, neither do I, really.
"I am Clark Kent. I am Ember's new father."
He nods. "Do you, by chance, know how to speak Wolf?"
I push my glasses up the bridge of my nose. "Would this be the same "chance" that makes it so you speak English?"
He laughs. "Touché!"
I'm filled in.
"So, you see, only one of my own blood could break the spell."
I, on the other hand, am vulnerable to magic but I don't say that. "So, Ulrich, I take it you must be Scandinavian?"
He nods. "I was born in Roskilde, Denmark and I came to America when I was 12."
He rubs the back of his neck. "I tend to speak Danish when I'm angry."
Like how Ember growls.
He looks at her. "Do you know Danish, min skat*?"
She shakes her head. "Mom taught me a bit of Scottish Gaelic though. I remember she looked like Merida from Brave."
He raises one eyebrow.
I pull up a picture for him on my phone then show it to him.
He laughs then, after howling like Ember would, grins wide and toothy. "She looks like my spark, all right. I've certainly seen that riot of hair on her."
Ember raises one eyebrow.
He looks at her then nods. "Yes, I called your mother my spark. It's why you have the name Ember. Starlight is after my twin sister, the only wolf girl, besides you, to be born in the family. All others have been bird girls. I do not know where she is but she would have loved to have met you."
He sighs. "My poor little sister. She felt so alone, being the only wolf girl. Human girls were always so mean to her. I never got the chance to tell her you were born because she made the choice to leave the world on the same day that you came into it."
He places one hand on her head. "That's why I gave you her wolf name as a middle one. I like to think she would have liked that."
He removes his hand from her head. "Shortly after you were named, I was saying goodbye to her as a wolf. That's when the spell was cast on me. As the years went by, it became harder and harder to think as a man."
He smiles. "When you said my name, I felt as if it unlocked something hidden deep inside me. You restored my memories and broke the spell."
She nods. "What about the person who put it on you? How do I know she won't do it again? What about..."
She looks pointedly at him then me. "And what about my Mom?"
Her voice softens. " I miss her."
He nods. "I do too, but you don't need to worry about the woman who put the spell on me. She died after doing it of a cause unknown to me, saying that she was the one who split up our family. I know now that you'll never see your mother again. You know what happens when she stays in her smoke form too long."
She wipes her eyes and nods. "She's unable to pull herself back together. She's dead now. She would have found me otherwise."
She breathes out slowly then smiles. "I guess I have two dads now. Tell you what, it's spring now. How about you guys split up the seasons that you have me?"
I nod. "Sounds fair to me."
He nods then we reach an agreement.
*means my darling, literally my treasure.
