Chapter four

The three team members braced themselves for the news. They're about to find out if Danny is gonna be okay or not. Just how ready are they to hear the news that's about to be given to them?

The doctor looked at them and saw the worry and concern in their eyes and their faces. He could tell that they all deeply care about Danny. He had to give them the news one way or another. It's part of his job in all cases.

"I'm afraid Detective Williams is in critical condition. He suffered numerous injuries. He had a broken left arm but we managed to fix that while operating him. It shouldn't be very worrying, he's currently wearing a cast to prevent any arm movement and it should heal in two weeks. But his other injuries are quite scary and dangerous. When we got him to the OR, we noticed that a big piece of glass had entered his left thigh. It was pretty challenging to get it out but it worked. Thankfully, it didn't affect his ligaments and his muscles. We tried our best to clean and disinfect the wound but that doesn't mean that he won't be facing an infection. But we put him on antibiotics to try and prevent the infection from occurring. It all depends on how his body responds to them. Detective Williams also lost a big amount of blood so we had to start a blood transfusion. He needed two units. On top of that, he suffered a brain concussion. This could have many consequences on your friend such as confusion, a temporary loss of consciousness, fatigue, dizziness and maybe even nausea." The doctor delivered the news and just hoped for the best. He instantly noticed the look of worry on the faces of the three team members.

Steve was overwhelmed with everything the doctor just told them. It wasn't much of a difference for Kono and Chin. He felt so helpless. He ran his hand through his hair. However, he noticed the look on the doctor's face and felt like he was hiding something from them. "Doc, what aren't you telling us? What's wrong with Danny?" demanded Steve. His voice was rough and threatening. He needed to know what the doctor was hiding from them. Chin and Kono approached him just in case he needed some support.

The doctor had no choice, he had to tell them. He sighed and decided to tell them everything. "While we were operating Detective Williams, we lost him. It took us approximately 3 minutes to revive him" he wanted to continue but noticed the reaction of his patient's friends. "I could give you some space and come back in a few minutes if you want. I understand that it's a lot to take in at the moment" said the doctor, his voice full of compassion and understanding.

"No, it's fine, go on" responded Steve. It's okay, be strong for Danny

He sighed hoping the news wouldn't be too hard on them "Detective Williams has unfortunately what we call a cervical degenerative disc disease. This disc causes pain around the neck and radiates through the arms. I believe this was caused by the strong impact of the car when it hit your friend's. Unfortunately, this is a chronic disease that will accompany Detective Williams for life. But, that doesn't mean that it can't be treated. With medication and physical therapy, your friend's condition can get better. The pain could decrease. It's very possible and I have hope that he's going to overcome this. Hopefully he responds to it well and I think we can make it work. I'm extremely sorry".

Chin and Kono were taken aback by everything the doctor just told them. They couldn't believe it, Danny was seriously diagnosed with a chronic neck disc. Kono tried to fight the tears back but she gave in. Chin enveloped her in a tight affectionate hug.

Steve on the other hand felt like he'd been stabbed in the heart, like someone had sucked all the air from his lungs. He was in shock and in utter disbelief. His partner, his best friend, is now suffering from many injuries including a neck disc. He managed to keep his composure, for now. If he wanted to break down, he would do it alone in a bathroom, not here in front of the doctor or Chin and Kono. "Can we see him?" asked Steve, his voice shaky and quivery.

"We're taking him to the ICU. Once placed there, I'll send a nurse to take you to him. But I can only allow one visitor at a time. " declared the doctor. He felt terrible for delivering such news to the team, they were devastated.

"Okay doc, just one more question, is it possible that Danny could face mental or emotional consequences?" asked Steve. He needs to be prepared, he wants to be there for Danny no matter what, he just needs to know what he could be dealing with.

"Yes, unfortunately he could. It is possible that Detective Williams could wind up having PTSD or any traumatic disorder upon entering a vehicle for instance. But we shouldn't worry about that now, it's too early to know, and in case it happens, he can get through it if he receives all the support from you and his friends. This is a very important factor Commander" answered the doctor.

"Don't worry, we're gonna be there for him. Also, thank you doc" stated Steve as he shook hands with him.

"You're welcome. Just doing my job Commander" replied the doctor with a small smile. Steve nodded and the doctor made his way out of the room. Steve then went to Chin and Kono. After they shared that embrace, Kono felt better and they sat down. They were holding each other's hands to show support to the other.

"Steve, it's gonna be okay, Danny's a fighter, he'll pull through" enounced Chin. If they didn't convince each other that Danny would pull through, they would all wind up being depressed and having no hope whatsoever. They needed to stay positive, regardless of the current situation.

"Is it gonna be okay Chin? Cos the way I see it, it's not!" exclaimed Steve. Before Chin could even say something, he held his finger up and continued "Danny is in there fighting for his life Chin. He's got a chronic neck disc and suffered many injuries, including a brain concussion that resulted to many consequences. I mean, how is that okay, huh? How is that even remotely okay? I don't know about you guys, but to me this is far from being okay. I don't even know if we can still be partners. Hell, I don't know if Danny can still be a cop!" Steve was screaming and wasn't even aware of it. He had let all his anger out on Chin. "Oh and I almost forgot, they lost Danny inside that OR and it took them almost 3 minutes to get him back" growled Steve. There was a hint of sarcasm. His voice was trembling, he was on the verge of breaking down.

Kono realized what had happened now. She stood up and gave her boss a heartfelt hug. He returned it and had stayed like that for well over 30 seconds. They broke the hug and Steve became conscious on what he had done. "God Chin, I'm so sorry, I just.. I had to let it out" declared Steve.

Chin got up and put his hand on Steve's left shoulder "Don't worry, brah. It's fine, I understand." His response was full of empathy and affection. He knew how close these 2 men were and that lash out was bound to happen sooner or later, and it just happened to be sooner rather than later.

Just then, the nice nurse from the station made her way to the waiting room, "Commander McGarrett?" she asked gently.

Steve turned to her and recognized her. Again, her presence soothed him and made him feel better. She went on "Detective Williams has just been transferred to the ICU, I'm here to take you to him"

"Okay, yeah. I just want you to meet my friends, Lieutenant Chin Ho Kelly and Officer Kono Kalakaua. They work with Danny and I" answered Steve. She looked and them and smiled, and they returned the smile back.

"All of you can come with me but we only allow one visitor at a time in the ICU" she continued

With that, they all nodded and made their way to the ICU. They were scared of what they were about to see but they wanted to check on Danny. As soon as they arrived, the nice nurse told them that each visitor could stay for 5 minutes. They still needed to check Danny's vitals and perform a full check-up. She left them alone so that they could go each inside and check on their beloved friend. Steve sent Kono first. She entered and was shocked at the scene in front of her. She never saw Danny in such a state. She sat down on the chair by the bed and put her hand on Danny's. "I love you Danny. We all need you to fight this. You can do it". She couldn't bear watching him like that so after 3 minutes she got out. Chin then followed. He sighed as soon as he got in. He placed his hand on Danny's left shoulder, "You're strong brah, you can fight this thing. We're all here for you. Grace needs you. We all need you. Love you." He then made his way out and let Steve go in.

He didn't expect to see Danny like that. Everything was just out of place. He looked so pale and so small with all the equipment surrounding him. He's placed on a ventilator to assist his breathing. The heart monitor was the only sound in the room. The IV pole was also filled with fluids entering Danny's body. He was also wearing an oxygen mask. It was all so weird for Steve. He then sat down on the chair by Danny's bed and held his hand. The tears were already welling up. Damn it, keep it together Steve, you're a Navy SEAL. He was sitting there with sadness written all over his face. He had to say something, "Danny, listen pal, we're getting through this no matter what, you hear me? We're all here for you, we're not going anywhere alright? Grace needs you, buddy. We all do. I do, I need you. I love you, brother." With that Steve made his way out knowing that the nurse would come and ask him to leave as they wanted to check Danny. Before leaving the room, he stood by the door taking one last look at his partner, sighing, and hoping that it would all be okay.

Steve, Chin and Kono were sitting, while the nurses were checking on their friend, each one of them in their own thoughts. Suddenly, Chin's phone rings to break the silence. "Lieutenant Kelly" answered Chin as he took the call.

"Chin, it's Duke. We got something regarding the driver that fled the scene of the crash. I figured you would want to see this for yourself" replied Duke.

"Uh, okay Duke, I'm on my way" voiced Chin. He hung up and looked at his friends "That was Duke, he said they found something regarding the driver that fled the scene of the crash"

Steve was determined to find who did this to his friend, "Okay, you and Kono go, I'll stay here with Danny" he said. Kono looked at him, she wanted to stay here. "Kono, I know how bad you want to stay here. Even you Chin. But the faster we catch the person behind this, the better. You two helping would mean a lot to Danny. It's okay, I'll stay here and update you in case anything happens" stated Steve. With that, both Chin and Kono left the hospital and made their way to HPD, hoping that they would find the person behind the accident and fast.

Time was passing and the nurses were still checking on Danny. He then remembered that he had to inform Rachel about everything that had happened. How can I tell her everything, dammit. He had no choice, he couldn't hide something this big from her. He took his phone out of his pocket and dialed her number.

"Hello" answered Rachel with her sharp British accent.

"Rachel, it's me Steve. Listen, I'm calling you about Danny" replied Steve. He then told her everything and yet again, hated himself for doing that. Rachel was heartbroken. She was crying through the phone. "Rachel, it's fine, Danny's strong. You need to be strong for him and Grace. She can't see you like this, she'll become worried and start asking questions. How did she take it, by the way?" he continued.

Rachel composed herself and responded "She was pretty upset at first, but I explained that he was really tired and needed to rest for a couple of days. She seemed convinced. Hopefully it'll hold her back for now. But it's only a matter of time before she starts asking about him again."

"I know, and let me handle it. I can take care of it" he replied.

"Commander, thank you so much for taking care of this whole situation. I don't know what to say" she declared.

"It's the least I could do. Now take care of yourselves, I'll call you if I get any updates" said Steve. He then hung up and went back to waiting, hoping that the nurses would let him back in so that he could be close to Danny.

Chin and Kono arrived at HPD. They wondered who that person could be. Was it someone Danny knew? In that case, it would be personal. Was it just a random person who took off because they panicked and didn't know what to do? Whoever it was, they had enough motive to put them in jail. As they entered HPD, they noticed Duke and made their way to him.

"Hey Duke, so what do you got?" asked Kono

"Hey guys, how's Danny?" he asked before telling them what they had found. Danny was one of his friends, he wanted to know if he was okay or not.

"Not that great. He's a fighter though, he'll pull through" answered Chin. "So what did you guys find?" he asked.

"Okay, so we managed to pull camera footage from the street where the accident occurred, and not only did we get a license plate, but we got a shot of the driver riding the vehicle." He then took out the paper that contained the shot of the driver and showed it to them.

Both Chin and Kono gasped at what they had just seen. They couldn't believe it.

"Stan Edwards?!" exclaimed Kono, in complete disbelief.

"How do you know?" asked Duke. He was about to reveal the man's identity but Kono already has.

"He's Rachel's husband and Grace's step-father. I can't believe it" said Chin. He never thought that Stan had it in him to pull off something like that.

"Chin we need to tell Steve" added Kono.

Chin agreed. He took his phone out to call him.

"Chin, what do you got?" answered Steve

"Steve, you won't believe who's behind this accident" responded Chin. He had no idea how Steve would react to a news like that, but knowing him, he already knows that Steve won't take it well.

"Who is it, Chin?" asked Steve. His voice was angry. Chin's response worried him and made him feel unsettled and uncomfortable.

Chin then replied, "Steve, it's Stan."

A/N So? What do you guys think? Was it good? I tried my best to make the whole medical thing accurate enough. Also, what do you think about Stan being the person behind this? Tell me! As always, thank you for reading!
