Chapter Six

It was around 3 in the morning when Steve had woken up. He felt weird and his neck was hurting him from the position he was sleeping in. Relaxing and stretching for a couple of minutes, he stood up and got closer to Danny. He started observing his partner, still trying to take in what happened to him. Danny was still pale, and looked so small because of all the equipment surrounding him. The ventilator was assisting his breathing, and the heart monitor was the only noise in the room. Every time Steve looks at his partner, he remembers the crash and how Danny looked like before being admitted to the hospital. It was horrific. On top of that, he couldn't help but think of the wreckage and destruction the Camaro had endured. Still in disbelief of the news he got a couple of hours ago, he was going to make sure that Stan will pay for what he did to Danny. Taking one final look at his friend, Steve gently squeezed Danny's shoulder and left the room for a breath of fresh air.

The hospital had a cute little garden for patients and visitors in case they needed to get out, so Steve made his way there and sat on one of the benches for well over an hour, thinking about Danny. He truly means a lot to him and he was willing to risk everything just to make sure that Danny recovers from his injuries. There's no way that he was going to leave his partner alone. He started looking at the sky and admiring it. That went on for quite some time. At around 4:10 AM, Steve made his way back to Danny's room. Nothing has changed, so he sat back down on the chair and drifted back to sleep.

A couple of hours later, Steve woke up after hearing a sound in the room. He opened his eyes and saw a nurse standing by Danny's side checking on him. He instantly got up, thinking something was wrong. "Is something wrong with him?" asked Steve worriedly.

The nurse jumped at Steve's voice, it was very firm and sharp, but worried at the same time. He looked at her and raised his hands in a way of apologizing to her. "It's fine, don't worry. Your partner is okay for now, I'm just doing the usual check-ups. The doctor might come in some time during the day to take a quick look and maybe take him in for a PET scan. But for now he's doing okay" responded the nurse, with a soft smile on her face. Steve nodded and sat back down. She continued "Oh by the way, your friends are waiting outside. They arrived 15 minutes ago".

"Oh okay, thanks" answered Steve while he softly smiled at her. He made his way out of the room and saw Chin and Kono. He hugged Kono and greeted Chin with a brotherly hug.

"How is he? Any changes?" asked Kono. The worry in her voice was evident.

"No, nothing yet. But the nurses and the doc seem to be pretty optimistic about it, I hope they're right" replied Steve with a sigh.

Kono looked down to the floor and sighed as well, hoping Danny would soon wake up and have a speedy recovery. Chin then handed Steve a small bag, "I figured you might need those. I passed by your place this morning. I got your toothbrush and a new pair of clothes."

"Thanks, Chin" said Steve. He then made his way to the bathroom, brushed his teeth and changed his clothes. After that, he stood and looked at the mirror. He hoped that Danny would soon wake up, he needs to see him awake, he never thought that he'd miss Danny's voice and his rants, he needed one right now. He grinned at the mention of the rants. He then thought of Stan, his jaw clenching. He still couldn't believe that Stan actually had the urge to hurt Danny the way he did. He wanted to catch him in his bare hands and take him himself to jail. He wanted him to feel the pain he put his team through in just a matter of hours. He sighed and left the bathroom. He then went to the two cousins, prompting a question.

"Did you guys find anything new on Stan?"

Chin sighed and looked at Steve with compassionate eyes, "About that, we have reason to believe that he isn't at his house anymore. We tried pinning his cell this morning and got nothing. It could be off but I don't think Stan is that dumb to stay put in his house. If Rachel got the news, that means that he knows that we know Steve. But, we put an APB out an hour and a half ago and we got every cop on the island looking for him"

Steve licked his lips and looked at Chin, anger and determination very clear not only in his eyes but his voice too, "We are going to find him, Chin. If HPD won't, I will. I don't care if I'll have to do it alone, but I won't let him get away with what he did, alright?"

"I know, Steve. We want to find him too" said Chin. He hoped that they'd find Stan and fast.

Kono then approached Steve and embraced him into a tight hug, "I know how you're feeling, boss. We're all feeling it. But it's all okay, we're going to find him, one way or another." She then let him go and Steve nodded at her.

Just as they drifted apart, Chin's cell phone rang.

"Lieutenant Kelly" answered Chin. "What?! Where?! Alright, we're on our way." Chin hung up and looked at Kono and Steve. "That was an HPD officer. Stan was just spotted near Hawaii National Bank. It looks like he's on the run"

"Alright, you know what, Chin, You and Kono go, I have to stay here with Danny. When you get him call me, and Stan and I will have a talk at HQ." responded Steve. As much as he wanted to get his hands on Stan, he couldn't stand the idea of leaving Danny alone in the hospital. He didn't like the change of plans but he got worried and got scared that something would happen to Danny while he was gone. He wasn't going to risk it. He would have a talk with Stan later, alone, just the two of them, in HQ. Chin nodded as he and Kono left the hospital running, in hopes of catching Stan before he runs away, and for good.

Chin and Kono left the hospital in a rush, hoping they wouldn't be late and that Stan would have already escaped. They entered Chin's car and sped to the bank. Thankfully, it wasn't very far from the hospital. On their way, Kono called HPD and informed them to secure the perimeter and keep an eye on Stan, and also surround the whole area to lower his chances of escaping and running away.

In about 7 minutes, to be exact, Chin and Kono arrived, and spotted Stan entering a vehicle. The rest was chaos.

The cousins got out of the car and started chasing Stan, as he had ran away as soon as he spotted them. Chin was running full speed, with Kono hot on his heels. Stan was pretty fast, to Chin and Kono's surprise.

The cousins were chasing him for over 3 minutes now, and Stan was starting to get away. Just as Stan turned directions he was immediately stopped by Duke, standing in front of him, pointing a gun to his head. Chin and Kono stopped, and then Chin spoke.

"Stan Edwards! Put your case down and place your hands behind your back!"

"Now!" added Kono.

Stan eventually gave up and put the case holding all his money on the floor and placed his hands behind his back as the two Five-0 members had asked. Kono approached him and cuffed him. As they were walking, Kono spoke with anger in her low voice, "Stan Edwards, you're under arrest for a hit and run. That means you're getting at least 10 years of prison. That is, of course, without the charges against you of injuring a man in law enforcement." The more she spoke, the harder her grip got on Stan's arms. She hadn't realized how hard it got until he spoke.

"Hey, be careful there, you're hurting my wrist" expressed Stan.

Chin then spoke, cutting his cousin off. He approached the guy, stopped Kono and looked him straight in the eyes. "Considering what you did to Danny, this is nothing. You're out here complaining about your wrist hurting you while Danny is in the ICU fighting for his life with a chronic neck disc. I suggest you keep your mouth shut before things get ugly". As he got to the end of his sentence, his voice rose. Kono looked at her cousin with affection.

Chin and Kono then took Stan to the Five-0 headquarters. The ride was pretty silent. None of them spoke. Despite wanting to know why Stan did what he did, the two cousins fought the urge of even communicating with him. They figured Steve would want to that part. The only thing that worried them was how far could Steve go with Stan. They both know how deep Steve and Danny's relationship is, and considering what Danny had suffered, and how Steve's been feeling about it, they were worried that Steve could actually hurt Stan pretty bad.

As soon as they arrived, they took him to the interrogation room, or the 'blue room' and left him there, without saying a word. With that, they made their way back to the hospital.

Steve was sitting on the chair by Danny's bed, anxiously waiting for any news on Stan and his whereabouts. He hoped that they would find him, because he couldn't wait to get his hands on him. He swore that if he got away, he'd go on a personal mission just to find him. He was sitting down with both his elbows on his knees, his head buried in the palms of his hands. As he raised his head, he saw both Chin and Kono waiting outside. He got up and went to them. He couldn't resist anymore, and as he was walking to them, he spoke.

"Please tell me you found him"

Chin sighed with a small smile on his face, "Yeah, we got him, Steve. It's over, now we can focus on Danny".

Steve then replied to Chin, with a low and gruff voice, "No Chin, it's not over yet. I need to have a word with him. This isn't over." With that, Steve pushed Chin aside and started walking, determined to make sure Stan pays for what he did.

Before getting far way, Chin grabbed Steve's left arm and spun him around, and looked at him. He didn't want Steve to lose control of himself, he had to warn him. "Steve, be careful. Don't go there and lose your mind."

"He'll get what he deserves. Thanks for caring though. Just look out for Danno. Now I need to go, I have something to take care of" responded Steve, looking at his arm, signaling Chin to let go of it. Chin did exactly that and let him go. As Steve disappeared from his sight, Chin sighed, hoping Steve wouldn't go too hard on Stan. He knows Steve, and sometimes he can get pretty mad and angry and lose self-control. He then returned to Kono, sitting next to her, deciding that each one would go take turns to go sit with Danny, so that he won't be left alone.

Steve entered his truck. He was pretty shaken up. He's about to confront the man who had hurt Danny, the man who takes care of Grace when Danny isn't there, the man who got married to Danny's ex-wife. Tears started welling up in his eyes as he thought of his helpless friend lying on a hospital bed, clinging to life, betrayed by someone he thought of as family, well, almost. Steve instantly composed himself, turned his truck on and made his way to HQ.

Fifteen minutes later, he had arrived. He got out of the truck, walking in a fast pace to headquarters. He could imagine Danny bickering and screaming at him for walking too fast. Danny, compared to Steve, was not that big in terms of height, and every time Steve would walk fast, Danny always had to walk even faster to catch up. He grinned softly at that thought.

Steve entered HQ and made his way directly to the interrogation rooms. The closer he was getting, the more anger was building up inside of him. He remembered the words of Chin, Be careful, don't lose control of yourself. He arrived, and was standing right behind the door. On the other side of that door, was Stan, sitting on a chair. He sighed as he gently pulled the door handle down, entering the room.

Steve entered the room, and slammed the door behind him as he saw Stan. His eyes were full of anger. He approached Stan and looked at him straight in the eyes. Steve's gaze was quite scary. He was furious and angry. His eyes were also watery. He then spoke, his voice deep serious, "You got 10 seconds, 10 seconds to explain to me right now why you did this to Danny." He might have not screamed, but his voice was very serious which scared Stan a little bit.

Stan just looked at Steve for a bit, and all of a sudden chuckled.

Steve hated it, and he started losing his temper. Stan was trying to get to him and push his buttons. Steve couldn't hold the anger inside of him anymore and punched Stan in his face. It was a very strong punch and Stan started bleeding.

Steve's anger increased and he started growling, "You hurt Danny, and you think I'm gonna let it pass? Huh?! I swear to god, if something happens to him, I'm gonna make sure I put you right where you belong. If Danny dies, I'm gonna kill you myself, you understand?!" Despite the anger, his voice was also shaky and quivery. He continued, "Why did you do this to him? What did he do to you? He doesn't deserve any of this. I swear to god if I could kill you right this second I wouldn't even hesitate of doing it, but I want to know why you did this to Danny. You got five seconds to start talking or I'm throwing one of these punches again, even harder and stronger this time"

Stan just looked at him. This time Steve scared him, his voice scared him, his gaze scared him. He had no choice but to talk. He sighed, licked his lips and started talking.

"That's the thing, no one understands why. But, I think you all deserve to know anyway. See, ever since Danny won that custody battle a month ago and deprived Grace and Rachel from moving to Vegas, all I could think of was how Danny ruined every chance I had of raising my own family. If we could've gone to Vegas, my family would've been raised in a much better environment and place. I can't stay here forever. And I sure as hell can't raise Grace and Charlie here, with Danny being a cop, putting his life and sometimes our lives at risk, exhibit A, Grace got kidnapped last year. I can't let that happen to her again. And now, when Danny won this custody thing and the judge ruled in his favor, I just couldn't raise my family the way I want to. I hated him so much. He deserved what he got" said Stan. He let it out.

That last sentence hurt Steve so much. "Say that again?" said Steve, with a threatening tone.

"I said he deserved everything that happened to him" answered Stan, with arrogance.

Steve wanted to shoot him in the head, but he couldn't do that. Instead, he punched him again. Only this time, it was way stronger and harder than the first time. He then started screaming again. "Danny doesn't deserve any of this. And just so you know, Danny did the right thing by filing a law suit against Rachel. And you know what? Not only is he happy that he won, but I am. Grace is Danny's daughter, not yours. He has every single right to fight for her and keep her close to him. If she had gone to the mainland, I don't think Danny would still be alive by now. And now, with Grace still here, he still might die, but this time because of you. I said it before and I'll say it again" as he said that sentence, Steve approached Stan and yanked him by the hair and looked at him straight in the eye. His eyes were full of emotion, anger, sadness and fury. He went on, "if Danny dies in there, I swear to god, I'll kill you myself with my bare hands. I won't even think about it. He dies, you die, and I'll do it." With that, he let go of Stan and turned around making his way out of the room, anger still inside of him. He left the interrogation room, closed the door behind him. All of a sudden, the tears started rolling down his cheeks. He couldn't hold them in anymore. He let them all out. He laid his back on the door, slid down to the floor, pulled his knees up and buried his face down, as he started crying for his best friend, his partner and his brother, hoping that he would make it.
